An absolute gem!
A feminist anti-capitalist novella written by a middle aged Austrian in 1978.
Wow!
I am not sure if Kappacher was ever translated into English.
He should be!
The story about a young secretary from the countryside whose career in the city enables her to quickly rise to what today is basically a PMC level position at a Ford dealership is as educational as "Das Kapital" yet HAS A LOT LESS PAGES and no offense to Marx: style and structure is precise and gut wrenchingly beautiful/sad.
OMG did I diss my buddy Karl? Noooo just saying fellow Marxists should read more literature alongside theory!!!
Anyways: the story here is a reminder for all of us wage earners that in capitalism work will never love you back, we are all totally replaceable at any time no matter what level we inhabit in the hierarchy, the exploitation over a lifetime of labor will take its toll physically, emotionally, conflict is omnipresent/baked into the cake, solidarity with fellow workers is rare, the culture industry exists solely to distract from a harsh reality of drab routine, etc, etc, etc ....
A wonderful short precise gem this book is.
Thank you Walter!
Karl: still love you!
