Instead, starting from facts and artwork, we will try to approach Vincent Van Gogh, this 'painting madman' whose acts can be explained, first, if not even only, by logic and lucidity."

O viață zbuciumată, plină de tristețe dar și de dragostea față de artă, oameni și de Dumnezeu. Practic ultimele trei l-au ținut în viață cei 37 de ani ca în final sentimentul de dezamăgire să triumfe din păcate.

A iubit între-un mod aparte dar nu a primit la fel de mult; total nedrept. Mi-a provocat multă milă. Merita o iubire la fel de mare ca a sa. A venit din partea fratelui ce-i drept (care i-a fost ca un al doilea înger) însă nu a fost suficient. Nimeni nu a decis să se ofere lui așa cum s-ar fi oferit el altora.

Mi-ar plăcea să întîlnesc un om ca Vincent. Din scrisori se poate observa că era de o sensibilitate aparte, un om extrem de inteligent și empatic " îngrijește de bolnavi, se ocupă cu învățătura copiilor. Petrece jumătate din fiecare noapte citind și rugîndu-se. [...] O explozie la o mină se soldează cu un număr mare de răniți. Își dă ultima cămasă pentru a se face din ea bandaje pentru pansarea arsurilor."

"Toată viața îi va fi otrăvită de cărți. Îi citește pe Shakespeare, Victor Hugo, Eschil, Zola...etc. Este ceva din Corregio în Michelet, ceva din Delacroix în Victor Hugo și ceva din Rembrand în Biblie."

I have two different Vincent Van Gogh in my head now. The absolutely genius painter who changed the history of art and the lonely boy who struggled his entire life to make it through the day. And it's actually amazing the way Pierre presented this man, his fears, his dreams and hopes, his family and friends, his fights and journeys, but mostly, his relationship with the world and his art. He saw the world as something so full of hate and pain, and he wanted to give us the hope of something better. Vincent wanted to give us love and hope that the world can get better if we believe in ourselves as much as he believed in himself and in his power of doing what he was meant to do in this world.
I have an entire different point of view of him Vincent now and I totally admire Pierre Leprohon for his work which is incredible.

One of the most amazing books I’ve ever read. It made it to the top 3. The book is so well written, presenting Vincent’s letter to Theo and vice-versa. It’s well documented with all the periods the painter went through, from birth to death. All the paintings, all the sketches, all the feelings and emotions, when he painted, what he painted, how he did it etc. Not only his emotions were presented, but Theo’s as well, which made it more touching. And I think it’s really important to acknowledge Theo’s presence in Vincent’s life.
Everything anyone has ever wondered about Vincent is in this book.
Sometimes I got so lost into it that I felt I was reading some fiction.

I always liked Van Gogh as an artist since I was a kid, but I had never been enough interested in Art to search more about him. After a lot of years, I found this biography and I'm impressed, I identify a lot with him. I admire how a guy who doesn't know what to do in his life, without a special talent for painting, with everyone against him in each city, in each country, but still with all this, he never stopped trying and he became famous, unfortunately too late to him. And still they called him crazy, when he only never couldn't connect with the world. I admire this honest guy now much more that I know his story

Con qué cariño, respeto y minuciosidad Pierre Leprohon nos relata lo que fue la vida de Van Gogh. Nunca más pensaré de la misma manera en el artista. Es una lectura compleja, demora su tiempo, pero es exquita, la disfruté muchísimo, y la medité aún más, hay mucha enseñanza filosófica en las cartas, la obra y la interpretación de la vida de Van Gogh.

Una biografia completa, a veces te enfoca y te translada con los protagonistas pero al mismo tiempo te deja lejos de ellos. Muy formal, muy Insightfull, y muy melancolica por parte de las cartas. Autentico!
