Lloyd joined the United States Marines and served in Vietnam in 1966 as a field radio operator. Soon after graduating with a BA in journalism from Fresno State University, California, Lloyd started teaching English, literature, reading and journalism in the public schools from 1975 to 2005. Along the way, he enjoyed working as a maitre d' in a multi-million dollar nightclub and taught himself to count cards where he made some money in Las Vegas. If Lloyd stuck to what he learned about counting cards, he always left Vegas with more money than he arrived with.
A masterful novel of suspense and intrigue from a great thriller writer, 'Never For Glory,' was just the type of wild ride that I was expecting from author Lloyd Lofthouse! This is Lofthouse's second outing with the Josh Kavanagh character, the first being 2021's, 'The Patriot Oath,' which I also read and reviewed. That novel was excellent, but 'Never For Glory' was even better! Picking up in the jungle of Southern Venezuela, we learn pretty quickly what has happened with Josh's character since we last saw him at the end of the first book. Dealing with the ramifications of the attack on his wife that led to her current comatose state, Josh determines that the only thing that he can do for her at the moment is to go after the man responsible for her attack: Damien Bran. Bran is not just responsible for Rachel's attack, of course, but for the kidnapping and murder of countless others, including the many children that he has sex trafficked all over the world. Luckily, with Josh hot on his tail, we can assume that Bran is not going to remain at large for long. However, there are complications along the way that create a tension in the story that persists till the very last page. Like I said, I read the first book in this series, but I think that even if you haven’t, you'll still love 'Never For Glory.' It's just a great action novel, with a compelling and emotionally complex protagonist. Lofthouse does a great job of introducing new characters and adding in a lot of research without making it obtrusive. The plot of this one is great, and the pacing is solid. If you're looking for a thriller to start off your year, you can't do better than 'Never For Glory.'
What an adrenaline rush start to a novel! Josh Kavanagh, former Marine Corps sniper, and his partner, Cheete, HALO jump over 30,000 feet from a plane deep into the remote Venezuelan jungle to find the former agent responsible for shooting his wife Rachel and leaving her in a coma. I can't imagine the courage one needs to face such a jump! Thus, begins the deadly, tense cat and mouse adventure dealing with a most troubling issue of our times, child trafficking. Mia, a famous singer and Josh's former lover, is also in Venezuela for an undercover mission to rescue children hidden in a fortified jungle compound by this same rogue agent. It's a trap that has been set for both. A Russian pedophile has place a million dollar bounty on the head of Mia to stop her interference in this enterprise.
One of the most interesting characters in the book is the chameleon-like character of one of the victims, Adrienne. In spite of the wounds and scars of obvious torture, Adrienne helps Josh dismantle bombs to free herself and others. Instead of flying to safety with the others rescued and injured, Adrienne stows away to help Josh continue his search for those responsible. Thus begins the hunt fraught with danger and numerous, potentially fatal setbacks. Adrienne is a stoic, calm, intelligent person, who shows how much resilience a person can have in the face of danger.
If you enjoy tense thrillers with non-stop action, this is the book for you. I have to warn that there may be some scenes inside the compound that some may find painful to read. However, think of how much worse, what victims of child trafficking go through. The war on all human trafficking is one that must be won. Hopefully, this book will help bring it to the attention of more people.
For an avid military fiction reader only, a few times do you get a read with a classic exploration of morality, love and vengeance similar to this exemplar piece put together by Lloyd Lofthouse. 'Never for Glory: A Josh Kavanagh Thriller' is a sequel to the 2021, 'The Patriot Oath: A Josh Kavanagh Thriller' however this time round it is more personal as our main character is intent on seeking revenge for his wife's coma and is hell-bent on getting the rogue agent responsible for this. His mission revolves around moving to the war-ravaged and lawless area of Southern Venezuela as a lone paratrooper. While at it he discovers he might have fallen into Damian Bran's trap who is a former CIA now working with the enemy and Josh's fiercest rival. He also finds out about a Russian mob boss, who rather than collect art, fast cars or even yachts his specialty revolves around collecting beautiful women as sex trophies and toys. Despite his desire for revenge and mission to save these victims will this quest be realized or will Josh be eliminated? One thing I love about the book is how Lloyd's writing is enriched with fully developed characters maybe, thanks to his stint as a marine and also serving in the Vietnam war. This experience brings out an intricately layered epic read which is immensely gripping and full of twists and turns laced with some thrilling adventure. For any military fiction fan, this read will make you dance with delight!
