Loved, loved this 📚 from the beginning to the end. I loved Trudy a lot, great character! Sometimes I wanted to shake Seth but other times I wanted to hug him. Although he almost waited too late, in the end, he managed to recognize what he needed to do to make it right. My heart pounded and mentally I was shouting “ride, ride” at the climax. Happy reading/listening!

Trudy (Mail-Order Brides of he West) by Debra Holland

A touching historical romance that starts the Mail-Order bride series by Debra Holland and Caroline Fyffe.
The women all have their own reason to become a mail-order bride as do the men.
This story shows the strength and courage each must face discovering the West and finding love in their new husbands. Well written and encouraging.
A little bit of glosssing over the hardships like no indoor plumbing but to tell the truth, we don't need to know the gritty details to know these women had courage.

Having read most of the Sweetwater Springs books but not these mail-order brides, it was fun to visit the town before the addition of the bank, the hotel and meet a young Nick.

Sweet, lovely and a satisfying romance.

First let me say, I read / listened to this book in audio format via audible.com. I always choose audio books when possible as audio breathes life into the books. With multiple voices and accents and excitement in all the right places, not to mention audio books leave us hands free to do other things while reading & make great companions on long road trips!

This book is about an mail order bride company set back in the late 1800s. Back then that's how many people got married. A young woman named Trudy Bauer has decided she wants a husband and heads to the Mail Order Brides Company. It is there that Trudy makes friends with the woman running the operations there and she gets a man right away to marry. Trudy gets on a train (along with half of her fathers house) and heads for Sweetwater, Montana. Trudy's husband to be is Seth Flannigan, who just had his heart broken by a barmaid whom decided to marry some other man.

Trudy finds Seth kind and attractive. As soon as she arrives in Sweetwater, Trudy is swept away by townsfolk to get her ready for her wedding. Seth had made the plans before she arrived, sight unseen. Trudy is pleased with her choices so far tho the house could be better & bigger or at least have running water in it, but she sets out to make the best of her new adventure. Right away the two hit it off and we ride along thru the discoveries of new love. We see adventure, danger & love blossoming right before us.

The plot in this book is excellent. The Author, Debra Holland did a superb job writing this book supplying us with a sweet western romance. This story not only held my interest, but I finished it my 1st day! I enjoyed this book way more than I thought I would and can't wait to start the next book in this series! The narrator, Lara Asmudson was very entertaining too.I can only imagine how life was way back then. Outhouses, no electricity, no furnaces, no cars!

This is the first book I've read by Debra Holland and won't be the last. This was one of the better sweet mail order bride western romances I've read. It was historical accurate and the author paid attention to the details. I appreciate that. Actually, I really liked her writing style! Even with it being a clean romance sparks flew between the hero and heroine. That isn't always the case in sweet reads.

Trudy becomes a mail order bride to avoid marrying her boring neighbor and goes to Montana to marry a farmer. Seth sends for a mail order bride after he finds out the woman he's cared for has run off with another man. I liked both Trudy and Seth they were likeable but human.

I was a little disappointed with the lack of outside plot. There was bad blood between Seth and a rancher in town but it never materialized into anything. Also, I thought the book was a bit long. Some of it could have been cut without harming the story or the romance.

Because I have read others in the Montana Sky series, I was especially interested to see the town in an earlier decade. Mail-order brides is one of my favorite romance tropes and I wasn't disappointed. Trudy has such high ideals and her patience and love is tested when her new reality in her life with Seth doesn't meet with her expectations. A gentle romance blossoms and watches the changes brought out by love is affirming.

These books are a little like my Hallmark channel of books. This is the first in the mail order bride series which is a theme that intrigues me. This one is a simple story about Trudy and Seth getting to know each other and finding love. A nice story and one I'd recommend to anyone looking for a light read.

I am loving the books about Sweetwater Springs. This is the third book that I've read. I feel like I'm a part of the town. Debra brings the characters to life. It's nice to get some updates on the other characters from previous stories. I can't wait to read the next story.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Debra Holland. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.
My Rating: 4 Stars.

I haven’t read or listened to a historical romance in such a long time. I was incredibly eager to sign up for this review opportunity – and I was not disappointed.

Trudy is this incredibly sweet tale of a young woman taking the steps to gain a bit more independence – and venture into the big unknown world in the only way woman could do in those days without being labeled easy or quite simply a whore. Signing up to marry a complete stranger things start off quite interestingly.

Trudy – as a character is incredibly brave to leave everything she knows behind for, not only an unknown husband, but also a town she has never heard of or been. Add in that she might not be a brat – she has led a very charmed life as the daughter of an influential lawyer. Now she is suddenly thrust into a lifestyle that she isn’t quite used to with a lot fewer luxuries than she has grown accostumed to.

Fear not – how spunky Trudy rolls up her shirt sleeves and gets right to work. After some innitial fretting she settles in quite nicely. And her budding relationship with her husband is incredibly sweet. The way they start off with little affections and grow closer the further along in the story we get.

My only regret is that there wasn’t just a little more substance to the book. I would have love to have just a bit more oomph. Maybe just a bit of action. That does not mean this was not a well written book – I think more just a reflection on where my reading / listening tastes are at, at the moment.

If you are in the mood for a very happy and cotton candy sweet story – this is the one for you.

Narration was absolutely on par. The accents, inflections and characterization was exactly what I would imagine from the era. The characters were authentic and very believable.

LOVE NEVER FAILS

The story of Trudy will read well as a stand-alone and even better if you have also read Caroline Fyffe's stories on other mail-order brides from the same Matrimonial agency, with brides by the names of Evie, Kathryn, and Heather. Several of the other mail-order brides may be mentioned in the story, but not reading about them prior will not hinder the understanding of the friendships developed. There are several more stories in this series by Debra Holland, including Lina, Darcy, Prudence, and Bertha. Mrs. Seymour seems to have a special talent for matching the right bride to the gentleman seeking a bride.

Trudy Bauer of St. Louis, Missouri will accept the offer for marriage from Seth Flanagan of Sweetwater Springs in the Montana Territory. She will travel by railroad to her new home along with a substantial amount of home goods given to her by her father.

The story will have Trudy and Seth basically liking each other from first sight but that doesn't mean they won't have their ups and downs. Starting with the shock from him of all the items she brought with her, and her shock at how small his home is. She will meet several of the townspeople and develop a friendship or two. I love the enthusiasm of Trudy, with her bubbly personality and gentle way about her that endears those she meets.

Seth likes his new wife but fears he will never love her but is smart enough not to reveal those feelings. She proves that she can cook, keep house, and be diplomatic with difficult people. Just when things seem to be going perfectly, trouble is to be stirred. Has Trudy made an error in marrying him? Will Seth lose her before things can be made right?

The story is a clean, sweet, historical based mail order bride story with Christian elements but not preachy. It has the good, the bad, and the trouble-makers that are ugly. The phrase, "kill them with kindness" is fitting for the way Trudy knows how to kindly deal with difficult people.

MAIL ORDER BRIDES OF THE WEST

I just finished the McCutcheon series, in which we read about Evie, Heather and Kathryn. They came from Mrs. Seymour's bridal agency in St. Louis. This book is actually the first in the MAIL ORDER BRIDES OF THE WEST series.
Here we have Trudy, who spent her life, since her mother died, helping her father raise her two younger sisters. They've both married and moved out now, so it's her turn. She craves adventure and has decided to become a mail order bride. She's matched up with Seth pretty much as soon as she arrives at the agency, which is unusual, but it seems like the perfect fit.
Seth had his heart set on a saloon girl, but she took off with another man. Seth's friends engage in some good-natured ribbing...or in one case maybe not so good-natured...and Seth finds himself telling his friends he's not interested in the girl like they think, but he's already got a wife coming. What the heck did he say that for? Now what was he supposed to do? But as often happens, just when you think there's no way out, you stumble across a mail order bride ad, and that's how Seth finds Trudy.
Things seem to be going so well at first. Seth seems a little sad sometimes, but she chalks it up to the loss of his mother and stepfather. They love each other and their love seems to be growing. But blasts from the past have a way of turning everything upside down. Will Seth be able to turn things right side up again?
This was a pretty good book. I enjoyed doing some back-tracking after reading the McCutcheon series, as Trudy makes an appearance in Evie's story, and I thought reading the other books not part of the McCutcheon series would be fun. They don't all take place in the same towns, as in Texas and Montana with the McCutcheons, but they do all start in St. Louis, at Mrs. Seymour's bridal agency. I look forward to reading more about the other girls and seeing how their stories turn out.

Trudy is the first book in the Mail Order Brides of the West Series by Debra Holland. If the rest of the series goes as well as this book did I cannot wait to listen to the rest. In parts there is a lot of description I could of done without. Like step by step through Trudy's first bath after she got to her new home, but other then that I really enjoyed the story.

In the book Trudy decides to sign up as a mail order bride. Her mother passed away leaving Trudy and her father to finish raising 3 young sisters. Now that the 3 are grown and the last one just got married she decides it is time for her to start her own life. Instead of doing it the conventional way of boy meets girl, she is going to be a Mail Order Bride. She doesn't want to stay in St Louis where she was born and raised she wants to experience some adventure along the way.
So off to Montana she goes to meet her prospected husband and prays for the best.

Trudy and Seths' story is an excellent start to the series. This was a slow-paced, easy western feel-good romance. Seth was infatuated with a saloon girl who ran off and married someone. He saved face with friends by saying he had been corresponding with his intended. Of course, he wasn't, enter Mail Order Brides of the West and adventure seeking Trudy. The author allows you to focus on the couple without the interference (as much I love these things) sex, drama, and action. There was the potential for all three to occur, but the Author kept things above board and Trudy's skirt down. Even with the McCurdy and/or Lucy Belle situations, the Author kept things light.
I think what I enjoyed most was the Epilogue. It was cute and the interaction between the newlyweds was endearing. I look forward to reading more about the brides..................even Prudence.

Sweet fun escape

I should have written this review ears ago when I first read this series. Rereading it is like visiting an old friend. The author does a wonderful job mixing romance with the realities of being a mail order bride and living in late 19th century west. I love how the H&h both grow in the book, how both have strong and weak points, and in the end trust in each other. It was wonderful to escape to 1880's Montana for awhile.

Surprised I finished this book. This book was so dry, there was nothing to it. There was no heat, warmth or highs or lows, it was dry. Will not continue with this author. If I was 10 I might find this ( I can't right interesting) readable.

Interesting read. There's a bunch of these in the series. This one is about a socialite who decides she wants to be a mail-order bride because she wants "adventure" in her life. Am going on to the 2nd one to see if they hold my interest.

Beautifully descriptive of characters and surroundings.

I just love the picturesque settings and vibrant narratives that carry each of Debra and Carolines stories from start to finish. Similar yet not the same. Charming and captivating.

I gave all the books in this series 4 stars. By the time I got closer to the end books a pattern had definitely emerged. While Holland's people are not perfect looking which is a nice change, they all have death trauma. Every book had death trauma to be worked through. Except Bertha, who had shyness and fat trauma. If you are not a fan of crying then you are warned. I'm not so I'm thinking of only giving one more a chance from another series.
