Emma Darcy

Emma Darcy is the pseudonym created by the married writing team of Wendy (1940-2020) and Frank Brennan (1936-1995). Their life journey has taken as many twists and turns as the characters in their stories, whose international popularity has resulted in over sixty-million book sales. With more than a hundred titles, Emma Darcy appeared regularly on the Waldenbooks bestseller lists in the U.S.A. and in the Nielson BookScan Top 100 chart in the U.K.

Wendy was born 28 November 1940 in Australia. Her sister was the novelist Maureen Mary (Miranda Lee). Her father was a country school teacher and brilliant sportsman. Her mother was a talented dressmaker. She obtained an Honours degree in Latin and initially worked as a high school English/French teacher. She married Frank Brennan, an Australian businessman born in 1936. She changed careers to computer programming before marriage and motherhood settled her into a community life. She was reputedly the first woman computer programmer in the southern hemisphere.

As voracious readers, the step to writing their own books seemed a natural progression and the challenge of creating exciting stories was soon highly addictive. They were published since 1983. In 1993, for the Emma Darcy pseudonym's 10th anniversary, they created the "Emma Darcy Award Contest" to encourage authors to finish their manuscripts. After the death of Frank Brennan in 1995, Wendy wrotes books on her own. She lived in a beachside property on the central coast of New South Wales, and liked to travel extensively to research settings and increase her experience of places and people.

Wendy Brennan passed away on December 21, 2020. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and sister, writer Miranda Lee.

Emma Darcy is one of my favourite HP/M&B authors. I read her other outback series, Kings of the Outback, that is related to this one (Kings of Australia).

We have here a dashing hero and a damsel in distress. Darcy usually doesn't write alphaholes -- her heroes are take-charge but also treat the heroines well. Tony is no different. In the beginning, he's extremely attracted to Hannah, but he also does not want to start something with an employee, as the situation might get messy. There's allusion made to a previous liaison where the woman had taken advantage of being the boss's girlfriend and lorded it over the other co-workers as well as using it as an excuse to not put in 100% at the job. But this concern that Hannah might do the same inexplicably disappears into thin air within two days of hiring her, and I wish Darcy had spent a bit more time on his inner conflict, to show why he felt he could trust Hannah (apart from the fact that she didn't call him for two days after they almost kissed!).

As for Hannah, she's also Darcy's typical heroine who has her own sense of purpose and is kind but not a doormat. Hannah has experienced heartbreak in her past and for two years, she has been travelling all over Australia, taking on various temporary jobs, to put the past behind her. By all accounts she has succeeded, but we soon realise that she had only succeeded in running away from the pain but had not dealt with it nor resolved it.

When she comes face-to-face with the people who did her wrong and is forced to deal with the pain, Tony steps in protectively and helps her through the confrontations. He's very decisive here and takes a lot of unilateral actions & decisions. Normally I don't like this... it's a bit paternalistic in an "I know what's good for you" kind of way. He didn't discuss it with her beforehand or explain what he was going to do. But he did go over it with her immediately afterwards and explain his reasons & motives, so... I don't really like it, but I'll accept it.

Hannah had been so badly hurt that she found it hard to believe that their feelings would last. She had to cancel her wedding to her ex-fiancé after she found the guy cheating on her. So now she is afraid to plan another wedding and allow herself the anticipation of it, in case things don't work out again.

She's also concerned that a month is not enough for them to be sure of their feelings for each other. Tony asks if six months would be sufficient for her to feel more secure, and she says yes -- which I don't quite understand cos she was with her ex for ten months. I felt she would have wanted at least a year to ensure that Tony would stay the distance -- a longer period of time than what she had had with her ex -- and maybe later on as their relationship progressed she might change her mind and give in earlier.

Tony then offers to plan the wedding if she will agree to get married in five months, if she still feels good about him and their relationship at that time. She agrees.

Tony really does it, right down to choosing her dress. What I don't like is that on their wedding day, he still isn't sure whether she's going to show up at the church, although she had promised him not to run. That means, prior to their wedding day Hannah had not communicated her feelings to him and he did not know if she felt secure enough with him to want to marry him. I feel that was unkind of Hannah and doesn't make for a healthy relationship. She should at least have said something the night before or the day before. Yes, she's beaming at him as she walks down the aisle, but she left him wondering and worrying and that I just don't like. I also don't believe that he wouldn't have asked her how she felt and confirmed that she wanted the marriage.

The worst thing is that we don't get an epilogue or a glimpse of the two of them together during or after the ceremony. Chapter 16 ends with Hannah taking Tony's hand as she reaches the altar after walking down the aisle on her father's arm. The next chapter -- the last chapter -- is from his grandmother's POV. She wanted Tony to get married, and when she hired Hannah to work as a chef on Tony's catamaran, she had hoped that they would end up together. She basically says she's very pleased that it all worked out, and then sets up the next book by saying she wants to hire someone to put together the family history and that she needs to find the right woman for her last grandson.

I felt we were cheated of "the money shot" -- the moment when the couple confesses their love to each other. Tony certainly confesses to Hannah, but we never see her reciprocating. So we never get to see them really together with the mutual understanding of their love and care for one another. I felt the caring was very one way, all flowing from Tony to Hannah but where was the evidence of Hannah caring for Tony? She didn't even care enough to tell him the night before, "I'm looking forward to tomorrow and I can't wait to be your wife"??

And we don't get to see her thanking him for all the detailed planning and little touches he put into their wedding. We don't get to see her appreciation of his gift of love, as Darcy puts it. I would have loved to see her thanking him for the beautiful headdress holding her veil -- he had specially commissioned it and it had deep symbolic meaning to him. I would have loved to see her exclaiming over how beautiful her dress was and how it was exactly her style and let him know that he "got it right", that he "got her" and that she felt special in his eyes, felt seen.

Urgh I felt so dissatisfied with the ending. I feel also that Tony got a bum deal. He worked so hard for her and didn't get the payoff! It's not enough that she turned up at the wedding, ready to get married. He didn't get the appreciation and caring and respect that he deserved. Ms Darcy, why you gotta do this to me?!?!

This book was adorable. I loved the heroine from the first moment the book started. She was cheerful and fun, though suffering from some unresolved baggage. The hero took me a little longer to like, though not much. Once he had to step up to back the heroine, he did so, with gusto. This book was one of the cuter family matchmaking plots I've ever seen. It was one I couldn't put down from the moment I started it. I would highly recommend it.

Clever man. But maybe he was dicing with danger when he gave her the time to change her mind by her having the opportunity to be a "no-show" at the wedding but also what if she only turned up at the wedding because she did not want to be embarrassed again. LOVE the Grandmother. I have already read the Alex and Matt stories.

I have read this book before and now I have enjoyed reading it the 2nd time. It's a fun book as it shows a little bit more from the guy's standpoint, where he has decided this is the girl for him, but now he has to convince her.

This is an insta-love romance. As the couple journeys to their happily ever after, they learn to put past hurts away and embrace the future, learning to love and trust again.

The main characters were both lovely.

I started the book and did not put it down until it was finished.

Real characters, with a history (that comes back to bite), and baggage. I love the fierce protective streak all of the Kings seem to have.

Very bland and uninspiring. The beggining even sounded amateurish from the pen of such an experienced writer.

I enjoyed this story very much, but the heroine's insecurities were not overcome just avoided. She didn't want to plan for the wedding because of a prior relationship gone bad, so the groom did all the planning instead. I would have preferred that she take the time necessary to trust in her future husband before getting married.
