Like all his friends Larry was secretly scared of the war that was coming. He had seen the chocolate and gas masks in the classroom cupboard, the air raid shelter at the end of the playground. And he was scared of the bombs that would come. Then, one Saturday night his brother took him to an old fortune teller because he wanted to know if he had chosen the right girlfriend. Larry's brother paid for Larry to have his fortune told too. But when the old woman saw fire and bombs and death in the silver fortune bowl she would not go on. Larry knew he had to escape to a safe place. But Fate and Fortune followed him. What the old woman had seen was true.
