I’ve read books where the alpha male can be a jerk, overly protective, and even jealous, but the way Logan treats his wife, the woman he says he loves more than anything is borderline abusive. And I think “borderline” is going easy. It has nothing to do with him being physically rough either.
More than once, he talks to her like she’s a child and stupid, which is bad enough, but what cinched it for me was the fact that, at one point, Lauren actually thinks of how she knows she screws up a lot because he tells her that. Now, keep in mind that her “screw-up” was having contractors come to her house when she was there alone. Not going to a bad part of town in the middle of the night. Not picking up a hitchhiker. (None of which excuses Logan making her feel like a stupid child.) No, she simply didn’t wait for the man to be home to dare have a professional come in for work. And she consistently reminds herself that she “knew he was like this” and “just wanted to get [him being angry] over with.” That’s how people in abusive relationships sound, rationalizing, excusing, justifying.
This was the first thing I’ve read by this author and I won’t be reading anything else.
