Not a single thing here I would want to make. Some stuff I would want to try, but only if someone else made it for me. So much frying and steps, to make a fancier version of whatever weird thing Taco Bell is making that quarter! Many recipes are two pages, and seem like so much effort! I’m sure if you had Chef Josh make them they’d be fun to try, but not sure how easy/fun these would be to replicate as a home chef in an apartment kitchen. Some of the humor is fun, but I think I enjoy Chef Josh’s zany podcast/YouTube ranting more than his writing. The pictures seem kind of random and don’t always match up with the recipe they’re near. They’re kind of fun and whimsical but also a bit overwhelming
As a longtime watcher I knew I had to have this cookbook. Boy am I glad it exists! Great read and filled with so many amazing recipes. I’ve already made the Animal Style Mac ‘n Cheese (even better than I imagined) and Gatorade muffins (a learning moment). Can’t wait to try many more!!
If you’ve never sat down and read a cookbook cover to cover like a novel, might I suggest starting here? Josh Scherer is as talented with the pen as he is with the spatula, making this a highly entertaining, informative, inspiring read. Can’t wait to try some of the recipes out myself.
My husband has watched GMM for many years on YouTube and got me this book for my enjoyment of reading and making food. I’m excited to try several of these recipes! Unfortunately a lot require a fryer which I don’t own and hard to source ingredients in the (scary) chapter of the book. Overall I think it’s incredibly refreshing and whimsical. We often think of food as needing to have required nutrients or support a specific diet in being delicious but making things just because they are pure joy is also a necessary and noble pursuit in life.
Lots of great original recipes with bright engaging colors and it is actually FUNNY! It was one of the few times I legitimately READ a cookbook and not just for the recipes.
I don’t normally write reviews but this book went over the top with imagination. The imagination these guys put together grossed me out. I would recommend reading this if you want to be thoroughly grossed out with off the wall recipes. Spoiler Alert**…habanero watermelon party wings…nacho donut holes…Cheetos apple pie….stovetop Kit Kat mac n cheese. I can’t.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Really creative photography and food styling!! Of course some of the recipes are for the lols but they are all 100% mythical! The whole crew behind this should be really proud!
As much as I like Rhett and Link on « Good Mythical Morning », I am not a fan of this cookbook. One of my pet peeves in cookbooks is too much text introducing a recipe, and recipes where you have to turn the page to finish cooking, this cookbook really needed more editing, in my opinion. It will not be on my cookbook shelf.
I only rated it low because I won’t be using most of the recipes. I do like the YouTubers that are associated with the book though they are funny a lot of the time.
SUCH AN ENJOYABLE READ! It's a funny but also real cookbook... humor throughout (and some truly wacky recipes) but also, every recipe seems set up for success. I plan to try several (as I do) and I fully expect them to turn out. I have since learned that the authors have a YouTube show that I could be enjoying, where they make many of these recipes. They seem like fun guys to hang out with. I have not yet watched an episode, so I can't speak for content or language. ;)
A majority of cookbooks are set up Breakfast, Lunch, Apps, Desserts, etc. Or possibly by type of meat or type of vegetable. This one is set up according to the authors' rules for cooking deliciously, eating happily, and living mythically. I love it! With chapter titles like "If a Hot Dog is a Sandwich, You Can be a Chef" or "Set Fire to Your Mouth, Not Your Kitchen" or "If You Can Dream It, You Can Deep-Fry It" who wouldn't dive right in?
I was obsessed with just about every stinking recipe in this cookbook. If I did not have a family depending on me for actual sustenance I would take the next three months and cook my way through nearly the whole cookbook. Skipping only a few recipes that left me feeling neutral, I broke up the rest into Recipes I'm Trying, Recipes I REALLY Want to Eat (but lack the equipment and/or my family would disown me), and Recipes Too Weird Even for Me.
Let's use the recipes to give you a taste of what you're in for with this delightful read. First, Recipes I'm Trying: •Fruity Pebble Pancakes •Gatorade Muffins •Garlic Bread McMuffins •Biscuit and Gravy Skillet Peetza •Pizza Crunchwrap Supreme •Bacon Cheeseburger Lasagna •Josh's Perfect Breakfast Burger •Bacon Stock Ramen, French Onion Ramen, and Grilled Cheese Ramen •Takis Grilled Cheese •Spice Krispies Treats •Cheetos Apple Pie
Next, Recipes I REALLY Want to Eat: •Popeyes Breakfast Burrito •Goldfish Pizza Rolls •Ramen Nachos •Baconator Soft Pretzels •Frozen Pizza Muffuletta •Peanut BJ Fried Chicken Sandwich •Tony's Ultimate Creole Shrimp Burger •The Reno Ransacker •Habausage Bites •Milk Chocolate-Dipped Bacon Ice Cream Sandwiches •Chicken-Fried Bacon BLT •Link's Mom's Country Fried Steak •Animal-Style Mac'n'Cheese •Cheez-It Ravioli •Josh's "Suck It, Gordon Ramsey" Grilled Cheese •Cheesesteak Mozzarella Logs •Kimchi Corn Queso Dip •Everything Bagel Fondue •Nashville Hot Chicken Meatballs •Habanero Watermelon Party Wings •EVERYTHING in the Deep-Fried Chapter! I need a fryer. (Chicken-Fried Cheeseburger, Nashville Sweet Chicken, Funnel Cake Grilled Cheese, Mini Crab Cake Corn Dogs, Rhett's Deep-Fried Refried Bean Balls, Nacho Donut Holes, Spaghetti Fries, Buffalo Chicken Chimichangas, Salt and Vinegar Potato Skins, Reuben Pierogi) •Oreo Biscuits and Gravy •Pop-Tart Lava Cakes •Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Burrito •Elvis Bread Pudding
And finally, Recipes Too Weird Even for Me: •Poutine Spaghetti and Meatballs •Doritos Locos Calzone •Wendy's French Fry Frosty Cheesecake •Stovetop Kit Kat Mac'n'Cheese •Movie Theater Ice Cream Sundae •EVERYTHING in the Curious Chapter! (Mustard Ice Cream, Pork Blood Tacos, Nashville Hot Lamb Brains, Fish Egg Quesadillas, Spaghetti and Cricket Meatballs, Pumpkin-Spiced Pigs' Feet, Pepperoni Squid Pockets, Liver and Onion Donuts, Coconut Durian Waffles, Beef Testicle Ragu)
Not only is the one of the only (if not THE only) cookbooks of which I would like to try every single recipe, but it is SUCH an entertaining read cover to cover. Josh writes in exactly the same way he speaks, which for those of you that don't watch GMM or Mythical Kitchen, is over-caffeinated, WAY too intelligent, and so full of humor you'll be laughing out loud simply reading some of the ingredient lists. I would even go so far as to say that even if you're not interested in all (or any) of the recipes, this is a great humor read if you need a little pick-me-up.
I would also LOVE to note that as someone who is two years in to healing a 15-year-long ED, this book was unexpectedly and remarkably healing. Right from the get-go in the book's introduction, Josh and company make it clear that the focus of their recipes is to making eating FUN and accessible. There are zero food judgements and no references to wellness culture or trends. Only guilt-free delicious food and experiments.
When I finished reading this cookbook (which feels like a weird thing to say about a genre I would normally just flip through, but that's exactly what I did; I read it), I was left with a sense of excitement and eagerness about food that I don't often feel. Thank you Mythical Chef Josh and the Kitcheneers!
This book is pure joy! But also has some pretty heavy and beneficial life advice (you may have seen some in my stories). And it’s full of creative photos and fun pajamas and most importantly- great recipes! I am so grateful to Harvest for sending it to me! It’s been a wonderful mythical week of reading, cooking, and eating over here. 🦄 Here’s what I made: 🍔 Cheeseburger Nuggets- this is basically all the ingredients of a delicious cheeseburger mashed together into a meatball then covered in breadcrumbs and air fried. Not pretty but tastes JUST LIKE a burger and fries. Total win. 🥞 Fruity Pebble Pancakes- very similar to funfetti cake. I thought I’d just use the sweetened condensed milk topping for the photo but I actually loved it. I did not expect to like these so much! 🌈 Skittle-Milk French Toast- this is a fun idea but really the only Skittle flavor is in the syrup and I prefer maple. We ate the rest with normal syrup and it tasted like regular French toast (and with 2 cups of milk and 6 eggs in the milk mixture, we were eating French toast for days). 🧅 French Onion Ramen- DELICIOUS! This has 2 whole onions in it for 2 servings which sounds crazy but it’s so good. The broth is super flavorful and it tastes like French onion soup but way better because it’s loaded with ramen noodles.
This is the first cookbook I ever read cover to cover and goodness I’m glad I did! (Also, yes Josh, reading the cookbook like a novel did get me very familiar with setting up a fry station, lol) The humor is incredible and it’s spread through all parts of the recipients from the descriptions to telling us how many people it will feed. I felt like I could hear Josh as I read- his style of joking translated perfectly into written word and I kept stopping to share jokes with the people around me. 10/10 cookbook and I can’t wait to try making some of these recipes!
P.s - The only reason it took me from March to August to read this is cause I had two major surgery’s in between and have difficulty reading in the hospital & during recovery. The time it took has nothing to do with how fantastic this book is.
I made three dishes from this book that I can't remember the titles of: the Skittles milk french toast one, mac n' cheese ramen, and chicken and waffles pot pie. Let me tell you, this is a stoner's delight. Odd food combinations paired with easy-to-find ingredients made me feel adventurous without forcing me to shop at any niche food stores. The snarky descriptions are a delightful quick read. And that aesthetic! It's a mid-century millennial's dream. All that's missing in those photos is Amy Sedaris.
Side note: I got this at my library thinking it was an actual fantasy cookbook, like there was a recipe for Lembas Bread in there or something. I'm glad I tried it anyway.
I’ve read only a few cookbooks cover-to-cover, and I definitely enjoyed this one. I found myself laughing out loud a lot more than I expected at little jokes and delightful photography. I did not expected to actually get recipes I would make, but I’m surprised at how accessible they managed to make some — I’ve especially always been intimidating by deep frying, and they have presented it in a way that feels doable. I would definitely recommend to any fan of Mythical entertainment or someone looking for unique recipes for regular cooks!
Chicken and Waffles Potpie pgs. 136-138 3/27/245/5 stars This recipe is so freaking good. I decreased a little of the butter. It calls for six tablespoons, but I only ended up using four. Also, definitely use regular syrup for inside the recipe. I use sugar free maple syrup on top but inside the potpie, the sugary goodness of maple syrup is definitely elite. I had trouble keeping the milk/flour/butter mixture from getting lumpy but that's my fault, not the recipe's!
Baconana Split pgs. 118-119 3/28/243/5 stars Making this was purely on impulse. It was okay, but definitely underwhelming. It was cool making the caramel; I've never done that before! I think it needed a little salt sprinkled on top to cut through the sweetness. I might make this again, probably not for myself, but if a friend wanted to try it, I'd totally be down for that.
Yeah it’s a cook book. But not any cook book. If you are a fan of Good Mythical Morning and it’s spinoff Mythical Kitchen, it’s a must have. In that case, it’s a cookbook that you read from the first page to the back cover. It’s not only recipes done on the shows but a bunch of new one and awesome photographs of the crew. A great book and maybe it will spun the idea of doing one of their crazy but awesome looking recipes!
This was.... wtf I am not sure I can give this a rating because it is meant to highlight this weird challenge these guys have given themselves. Not just to try new things, but to try weird things? On the one hand, I respect the curiosity that has gone into this. On the other hand... wtf There were no recipes that I took from this book for later, so maybe that's a way to judge this book's usefulness, but if you are looking for quirky ways to eat food, then this is the one for you!
Fabulous book overall! Just read it even if you do not make one recipe. It is humorous and joyful even in the ingredients list. Don't miss a word or you will not get the full happiness you deserve! Also, I found several recipes I want to try (maybe not from that last section). Take your time and really become one with this book even if just for a laugh. Highly recommend!
This isn’t just a cookbook, it’s an explanation of how the strange recipes in the book came about. Written by Mythical chef Josh from Good Mythical Morning, the stories are funny and informative. Don’t know if I’m ever going to make the weird concoctions I read about but I don’t think that’s why I really bought the book. If you make the Pork Blood Tacos, let me know how they taste. 👅
Fun to read cookbook, especially if you've watched the show. The recipes are out there, but some look worth trying. Gatorade muffins intrigued me the most...
And then there's the section in the back with recipes for the curious: mustard ice cream (served with pretzels), spaghetti and cricket meatballs, coconut durian waffles...
After watching Good Mythical Morning a lot, it is fun to see some of the iconic recipes in a way that is easier for everyday life. I'm for sure going to be making some of these recipes in the future.
Josh's brand of comedy is evident in this book as well, making it much more than a simple cookbook. This is a celebration of the Mythical brand.
This is an entertaining read with some great photography but nobody’s ever going to need/make use of this cookbook, let’s be real. Unless you’re like a college frat boy, or eating like shit is your “thing”, I don’t think anything in this book appears even remotely edible to the average adult human. I am actually really annoyed that I payed for this lol
I enjoyed flipping through this cookbook during my shift at work as a bookseller. The recipe intros are silly and conversational and the pictures are stunning. I am looking forward to making a hotdog sandwich!
Not good for people who are lactose intolerant. Nearly all of the recipes revolve around dairy. Also not great if you aren’t a fan of spicy food. Very few pictures of the recipes. The recipes are written with humour, which is fun though.
All the points for creativity and grossness, but as an actual cookbook only 2 stars. Most of these recipes are not feasible or for that matter appetizing. Yet, I do want to make the pulled pork Twinkies and the French onion ramen.
Although I was not drawn to this book - I loved this playful and larger than life approach to the recipes - flaming cheetos in rice crispy treats, cheetos in apple pie. This book is a teenager's dream cooking.
