When not re-reading Jane Austen, sipping tea or mucking about her garden, Elizabeth Essex can be found at her computer, making up wonderful stories about people who live far more interesting lives than she.
Elizabeth Essex

It wasn’t always so. Elizabeth graduated from Hollins College with a BA in Classical Studies and Art History, and then earned her MA from Texas A&M University in Nautical Archaeology, also known as the archaeology of shipwrecks. While Elizabeth loved the life of a working archaeologist, after writing and reading all those dry, dusty reports on ship construction, she would daydream about how lovely it would have been if only someone had fallen in love on just one of those ships. And so now she writes stories about just that.

Elizabeth lives in Texas with her family, in a house filled to the brim with books.

Lieutenant Ian Worth needs a wife by Christmas, so when a former colleague offers him the chance to marry his eldest, Anne Lesley, Ian agrees. Except then Anne turns out to be plain until his burning loins convince him otherwise. Anne, meanwhile, is shy until her burning loins convince her otherwise. Add in an abundance of in-laws, lots of rum, and CHRISTMAS and you've got this.

1. The blurb misled me: I had assumed they were married and content to go their separate ways before the snow ~strands them but it's kind of the opposite: they intend to get married before the snow strands them with Ian's rage-y father with no way of officializing the relationship. A bit disappointing.

2. Also disappointing: the handling of Anne. Her characterization in the first 6-7 chapters was goddamned heart-wrenchingly stunning. Shy and uncertain and convinced of her own lack of worth: UGH. But then she gets kissed, looks at some porn, and is suddenly a talkative bombshell that has no problem putting herself out there. Apparently the Magic Penis Cure © extends to rum-soaked gropings in greenhouses—GOOD TO KNOW.

3. Ian was an easy shell of a hero. Kind of dickish but willing to apologize and change his mind. Overall, passable but nothing outstanding.

4. Parts of this felt like a slightly longer framework would have worked better: see Ian's feelings toward his career and his family; Anne's entire character-development arc; their relationship. Instead of feeling natural, it felt harried and semi-ridiculous.

OH RIGHT I REMEMBER 5. NOW: Holy bananas did this need a solid editing to fix the MULTITUDES of consistency errors. Like, characters getting naked in between paragraphs, apparently! And boots disappearing into the ether! And cyclical feeling-plosions! Very messy.

Wonderfully romantic novella! Just loved Anne! (and Pinky)

'Twas three weeks before Christmas,
And all through the house,
Nothing was stirring, not even a mouse.
The fire it crackled, a comforting sound
I grabbed a hot chocolate, and a novella I'd found.
Excitingly romantic, a handsome young hound,
Ordered to marry, he circled around,
A navel lieutenant, a younger son,
Suddenly found he was the one.
Viscount in waiting he was to be,
He stood his ground, wanting to flee.
He plotted a near treacherous course,
Down a path he was protestingly forced.
The answer he puzzled and wrestled and fought,
To do not what he wanted but just what he aught.
By magic and chance he found his true start
A wren by perception, an eagle at heart
All browns and greys, a shy little dove,
Hidden from light, a dark little glove
Transformed to splendour, when gifted by love
His spinster bride, Anne Lesley by name
Ian Worth's lady, really anything but tame.
Assisted by Pinky, valet and friend
Sailed into safe harbour right at the end.
A wondrous read, a sunshine, a ray,
Of romance and pleasure that lightened my day.
(apologies to Clement Clarke Moore, 'The Night Before Christmas.' 1822.
Ok, the original was going around in my head and I couldn't help myself)

Instant love -- they are together only three days -- and this is one of those "shy/quiet woman who becomes bold and passionate because she finds kisses and sex" kind of novella. One thing that made this one enjoyable was Pinky, Ian's butler/valet/cook ^^

This was a nice little surprise by a new to me author Elizabeth Essex.

Lieutenant Ian Worth has a tyrant of a father who has sudden need for his second son. Ian's brother Ross has fallen from a horse and is presumably crippled putting the Viscountcy line in jeopardy. He demands that Ian find a wife and start creating new heirs.
Ian, who loves his brother and deservedly hates his dad lies and tells him that he's already married.
He happens to run into a former shipmate and explains he needs a homebody, quiet, unassuming wife who would be happy to keep house in the country while Ian is busy in the Navy. Coincidentally this former shipmate happens to have a daughter who perfectly fits the bill. Ian arranges a pseudo engagement sight unseen and invites him and his daughter to his home to see if they might fit.
Ian asks for a quiet unassuming country mouse and that's exactly what he gets in Anne. She's so quiet and shy that he literally doesn't even see her when her family arrives. They have an auspicious start when Anne overhears Ian contemplating if he can marry someone so very dull and plain.
Ian and Anne have to figure out if they can spend the rest of their lives together after getting to know each other for a few short days.

This was different from many historicals I've been reading lately. Ian and Anne's romance is very reserved and soft. The passion and drama in this novella is toned down to almost non-existent. There is one short sex scene but nothing to write home about. Instead you see a very slow unraveling of Anne's personality and Ian's emerging attraction to her. If you're a fan of Mary Balogh's early works then this book may be just what you like.

A very sweet holiday read, The Scandal Before Christmas was a wonderful historical romance novella. I really enjoyed reading this sweet book. Loved it!

Anne was shy, plain, and has been painfully aware of her flaws for her entire life. That has made her very self conscious. Add to that, living with an overbearing mother and far too many siblings, and Anne never had a chance to be herself. So, she starts off the book as very timid. But, over the course of the story, she gained confidence and proved that she had her own quiet brand of strength. By the end, I really liked her. I thought she proved herself as a heroine.

Ian was also wonderful. He came off as a bit callous and shallow at first. But, then we see that he was really sweet and very devoted to those he cared about, be it his brother or his maybe-fiance. I really liked him, as well.

The romance was super sweet. Anne and Ian were so adorable together. The romance between them was just absolutely lovely. There was a sprinkle of spice, but this was a mostly sweet read. I thought these two were a perfect couple.

The plot was well paced. I was hooked the entire way through. I really enjoyed this sweet story and the ending was just lovely.

The Scandal Before Christmas was a wonderful historical romance. I absolutely loved this holiday novella. It was fantastic. Lovers of romance, this is a novella you don't want to miss.

Whole bunch of sweetness. Ian and Anne were both perfect for each other. His dad needs to take a long walk off a very short pier.

4.5 stars!

You can never ever go wrong with a book (or novella!) by Elizabeth Essex. There is substance to her writing. It’s seductive and oooh-so-satisfying.

I adored this novella! It’s fast paced, well written and fun. I love novellas like this. Ms. Essex writes exquisitely and I found myself lusting after Lieutenant Ian Worth. He grabbed ahold of my heart and wouldn’t let go. Who doesn’t love a hard, rough & tough navy guy? Seriously.

 photo scandalxmas2_zps94fa0440.jpg

The characters are compelling and the storyline is engaging. The passion between Ian and Anne is slap-your-panties-to-the-wall-and-let-them-stick hotness! It was a while before I could cool down. *whew*

I love when characters in a book realize looks aren’t always everything. Love is good. Trust is even better.... and when you find someone who makes you be honest with yourself, every bit of yourself, that’s a keeper. That’s why I loved this novella.

I read several reviews from readers who didn’t like it. I think they had given up quicker than a fat cop chasing a teenager. Read it all the way through, ladies. You’ll be so glad you did.

Find a perfect excuse to immense yourself in this story. It won’t take you long. It’s escapism at it’s finest. Do you really need another reason?

So, huzzah for Anne and Ian! It’s been one heck of an enjoyable read.

[Original 2014 Review] Love love love. Elizabeth Essex is one of my favorite HR authors. Her characters are always competent, layered and believable and her settings are so well-described. You can tell she has a ton of knowledge about the era and a passion for ships of the time.

The hero, Ian Worth, was one of the plucky midshipmen from Almost a Scandal (I'm glad we're getting all their stories!). He's now a Lieutenant in the navy and (through spoilerish circumstances) needs to find himself a bride and marry quickly. Anne is the daughter of a colleague and advertised to be just what he envisions he wants in a bride - quiet, well-mannered and biddable. Little does Ian know that she has a wealth of passion and talent that is hidden behind a shy facade and an overbearing mother!

Seeing Anne come out of her shell was one of the best parts. Ian, instead of being taken aback at the spark he sees, encourages her and defends her when she does decide to speak out. He is delighted to think that he may have found a real partner and someone to love instead of the meek little wife he was looking for. Anne finally finds someone who believes in her and that gives her courage to open up and voice her thoughts, rather than hiding behind down turned eyes.

The story takes place over a very short time frame which makes the love connection slightly harder to believe, but Anne and Ian do spend almost all of that time in one another's company, united against opposing forces, so I'm willing to forgive the near insta-love.

Bonus: the excerpt at the back of the book for After the Scandal has me very excited to get to that, and not just because I share a name with the heroine!

I'm pretty sure I read this last year but must have forgotten to review it. I was happy to read it again. Very few authors can write novellas that are full meals like this one. The pacing was quick as is necessary but the premise that Ian needs to marry quickly, before Christmas, makes it work from the beginning.

Ian at first thinks Anne is a plain wren, he is even overheard by her lamenting such to his butler/sea mate. He finds out fairly quickly that she is shy but also completely overrun by her mother who talks nonstop about nothing.

His nemesis is his father who is an overbearing Viscount with no manners whatsoever. Ian's older brother, Ross, has had a fall from a horse and is currently unable to move. The father, who is more interested in his lineage continuing than his son's health, is trying to goad Ian into marrying his brother's betrothed assuming Ross will never walk again let alone father the desired heir.

Ian slowly caresses Anne out of her shyness with him and it is a delicious seduction. Better done than many seductions in full novels.

Obviously, I find this worth a re-read.

February 2022: I often think of this story. I can never remember the title but accidentally come across it and am jazzed. She is painfully shy and an introvert. Not ugly but not beautiful. I can relate.

Great addition to the series

I have read all the books in this series and loved them all. While sorting through my to read books on Goodreads - I noticed this title - I have no idea how I missed this little gem.

I really enjoyed this story. It is a novella, but it reads like a full length novel.

Ian needs a wife - like yesterday. While in the pub drowning his sorrows, he sees an old friend. He finds out his friend has a daughter that fills all Ian's requirements for a wife and invites them to his home.

Anne is shy, quiet and plain. Initially, Ian is very disappointed and Anne is none too thrilled herself.

These two seem like polar opposites - yet they are exactly what the other needs to be whole.

I loved watching Ian discover the real Anne and making an about face of his first impression of her. I was really very sweet.

Throw in a matchmaking batman, an overly chatty mother, a domineering father, a snowstorm and some very steamy kisses and you have a great novella.

I would definitely recommend this book - it is very loosely connected to the other books in the series, so it could easily be read as a stand alone.

Yikes, where do I begin?

I have read many, many historical romance books and this was one of my least favorite ones. The characters were boring, especially Anne. I felt like she was almost bipolar. It wasn't a very good transition from shy to all over a sudden shes demanding things from her parents. Stuff like that doesn't happen overnight. In most books it's more gradual. I also didn't like how Ian was so cruel about Anne's looks in the beginning. In most historical romances, there is SOMETHING the man finds attractive at first glance but with this one, there was none.

The ending was also poorly written. Was the Viscount upset when they got back and claimed they were officially married? How did Anne's parents react? Did the Viscount demand an annulment because how could they have consummated so quickly (even though we all know the truth) and did he demand proof if there was any consummation beforehand? It just kind of left you hanging.

I did adore Pinky though! And his adoration of Anne. That was my favorite part of the book :)

I can’t believe that I never read this author before! This is why I enjoy these short little novellas around Christmas time. I get to ‘sample’ so many ‘new to me’ authors and then decide if I’ll read them or not. In case of Elisabeth Essex, I’m sure to read her work in years to come.

I liked our timid, shy and plain heroine Anne, and I looked forward to this butterfly emerging out of a cocoon of her own making.

And then there’s our hero Ian who may seem shallow at first, but was actually a very devoted man and the more you discover about him, the more you realize that he’s much more than what he appears to be.

I really enjoyed Anne and Ian’s romance and hope you will too.

Due to an accident that paralyzes his brother, the heir, Captain Ian Worth must find a bride. He has already lied to his arrogant and domineering father that he is married and is therefore unable to marry his brother's betrothed. With only a few days before he returns to sea, he must turn his lie into fact very quickly.

He meets an ex shipmate, Colonel Oliver Lesley, in a bar and asks if he is aware of any eligible young ladies. Ian's experience courting eligible young women is sadly lacking. It seems Colonel Lesley has a daughter. They agree to meet at Ian's home, Gull Cottage, to see if they would suit.

Miss Anne Lesley, a plain, quiet spinster, is willing to try most anything to escape her domineering mother. She is especially willing to consider a man who will often be away at sea giving her the quiet and solitude she so desperately desires.

The early part of their acquaintance is a subtle and quiet seduction. Sensuous and romantic and very enjoyable. Recommended.

To thwart his father, Ian decides to marry quickly, potential bride unseen. He invites a colleague, his wife and his marriageable daughter to his cottage in order to see if they'll suit. He's not enthusiastic about the prospect of marrying, but he is even more disappointed when he gets a look at her and discovers she's quiet and reserved and very plain. But as they spend the holidays together they come to know one another and watching this discovery was what the story was all about and why it was so good! The heroine, Anne is very delightful and her character growth is very believable...This was also a very passionate little novella. One of my favorites ever! Just wish the epilogue had been a bit longer and contained a bit more family reaction...

I have really liked all the books in this series this far but this one left a sour taste in my mouth. I know it’s the way society works, but I really wished this hero would stop thinking so directly about his previous sexual experiences. It’s not the worst I’ve seen, but I would rather all that be alluded to. It’s a romance, please just gloss over it or it doesn’t feel like there’s something special with the main couple.

A lovely story that made me feel all mushy inside. It had all I wanted in a novella and there was no dramatic turn of events at the end where the protagonists end up fighting because of a secret or a misunderstanding. Just a lovely story about 2 people falling in love.

A very nice story, a historical romance that takes place in a very short timeline, a few days before Christmas.

Lieutenant Ian Worth needs a wife by Christmas, and he can't afford to be choosy. He has to find her, woo her, and wed her before he goes back to sea - all within a matter of days.
Anne Lesley is a shy spinster with no prospects, and nothing and no one to recommend her but her own self. She accepts the lieutenant’s hasty offer only for the comfort and security it will bring. But when a midwinter storm snows her and Ian in, they both find they got much more than they bargained for - daughter, light, and a Christmas filled with honest to goodness true love...

Everything begins because ofan ultimatum of Ian's father, a despot, interested only in getting his way for an heir for the succession and the poor Lieutenant despite everything wants to have only tale choise on the future bride. He doesn't have many requests: a simple girl, honest, loyal, willing to face long periods of solitude because of his military career . The only problem is that he told his father he had already married and then he must find the future Mrs. Worth within a few days. Luckily an old companion of sea's adventures has a daughter who seems to be the appropriate person.
Their first approach is not the best, the appearance of Anne and her shyness discourage a little Ian, but he has no choice, he must convince the girl to marry him.
Anne has many hidden talents, her character is what I preferred, a girl of few words, but to survive in the company of a mother so long-winded, hers is pure survival instinct. Shy but determined, with very clear ideas.
Ian is very charming, funny, sure of himself and these things together with his good looks are a deadly mix.
Simple plot, smooth and nice. A good read during this period close to Christmas.
This story is part of the series The Reckless Brides, # 3.5, but honestly you can consider the book as stand-alone.
Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for the book.

Trama semplice, scorrevole e carina. Una buona lettura in questo periodo vicino al Natale.
Questo racconto fa parte della serie The Reckless Brides #3.5, ma sinceramente si può considerare un libro autoconclusivo.
Ringrazio Netgalley e la St. Martin's Press per il libro.

This is my first Elizabeth Essex book, and I’m quite unhappy about that. I really enjoyed these characters, how they meet, which would never have happened under normal circumstances, and the gentle but heartfelt way they learn about each other and to then look forward the future.

Ian is a second son and has made the military his life. Bad news has just been delivered – his brother has suffered an accident and it is now up to him to marry and produce an heir. Finding this true, Ian laments the situation to a friend and fellow officer, discovering the man has a daughter who sounds too good to be true but who fits the bill perfectly for Ian and his seafaring life. They make arrangements quickly, because Ian has until Christmas to be wed.

Hoping she is finally going to be married with a home of her own, Anne’s first meeting with her betrothed does not go well. Ian mistakes her for the maid. Her plainness and shyness are not working in her favor today. Then she overhears Ian talking about those very qualities and her hopes are dashed, forcing her to seek refuge on the shore below this house she’d love to call home.

Unintentionally causing Anne pain has settled on Ian, and he knows he must put things right. I love that first real conversation between them as they walk the shoreline, re-introducing themselves and then getting on with the business of getting to know one another. Ian is the first man to see past that plain and shy exterior of Anne’s, seeing the intelligent and proud woman beneath, who Anne truly is. I love these kinds of stories, where the handsome, confident hero is taken with the painfully shy, not-so-beautiful heroine. It’s his gentleness in luring her out of her protective shield that tugs at your heart, then his desire for her pushes through to give their growing relationship a rough, sharp edge, suddenly showing the heroine how she affects this man she never though she could have. This and so much more happens between Ian and Anne. And Ms. Essex doesn’t hold back, giving the reader every ounce of emotion possible when this couple realizes what they have and more.

I’m definitely going to be reading more of Elizabeth Essex. It’s a rare author who can convert me with just a novella, and she’s done a very fine job of that. I look forward to more stories just as wonderful as this one.

The holidays are upon, which means it's time for me to read a few holiday novellas. Historicals are my favorite when it comes to short stories and The Scandal Before Christmas looked to have all of the elements of a fun, holiday read.

Lt. Ian Worth is the second son of an overbearing father. Until now, he's been mostly left alone and is away at sea most of the time as an officer of the Royal Navy. However, when Ian's older brother suffers what could be a fatal accident, his father demands that he marry immediately and sire a child. To try and get his father off his back, Ian tells him that he's already married. Needing to find a wife quickly, Ian arranges to meet the spinster daughter of one of his naval friends. At first Ian thinks Anne is too plain and without spirit, but soon learns that underneath her plain exterior lies a passionate young woman that may just be his match.

As novellas go, The Scandal Before Christmas had more depth than most. Like most novellas, it did feel like there wasn't quite enough time to get a really well rounded story. The pacing of story was uneven and I felt like the ending was very rushed. I was also expecting a much more dramatic ending and the quick resolution and wrap-up left me feeling a little bit underwhelmed. However, I enjoyed watching Ian and Anne getting to know each other and like their frank conversations. Of the two, I was more drawn to Ian, who is charming and has a good heart. I liked Anne well enough though her ugly duckling status was a little overplayed. The two had a good rapport though and I enjoyed their unconventional courtship.

With a good balance of romance and drama, The Scandal Before Christmas delivers a romantic read that's great for the holidays. If you like ugly ducking tales, you may enjoy this one. This novella is part of a series but I haven't read any of the previous books and had no trouble following along. It's also piqued my interest in this series and I plan to read the first book in the Reckless Brides series soon.
