I posted the rating for this book about two weeks ago and I wanted to let some time pass before witing a review for this story in order to make up my mind. Two weeks later, I'm still feeling totally at a loss about what to say. This has ben so strange: The plot has been strange, the characters have been strange, the dialoges have been strange. I definitly can't come up with another word to describe my feeling about Wanted. But the strangest thing might be that I wasn't able to leave the book unfinished - I needed to go on and find out the ending.
While the mystery wasn't especially solid, the relationship and character development was even weaker. Not one single action of Mingo felt credible, yet strangely, I liked him and I wanted him to be happy. I just might have to give the second installment of this series a chance in order to develop a better understanding for Mingo, his job and his feelings. Let's see what's going to happen!
Woof! This is the sort of story that starts slow and finishes with a Bang!
There's a lot of character introductions in this first of the series. For the most part it is smooth, there were a few places where a couple of turns of phrase had me scratching my head, but I soldiered on and it was soo worth it.
Mingo, aka Michael McCloud, is lovable and clever. Near perfect since he seems to be oblivious to his sweetness, alas it means he also attracts dickheads. Fresh out of a bad relationship he's licking his wounds on the North Shore of Oahu--yeah, I feel a little bad, but not that bad.
He works as a contract forensic accountant. For those who didn't grow up with one of those--someone who follows the money...really, really well. He's on a case, which is really just a vehicle to meet the chaos in his life as he cycles through his days. There are some very entertaining characters, a couple of love interests, and a bit of intrigue. Not divulging the plot, but when Mingo gets lucky--he gets very lucky! Lickey-stickey good lucky. The publisher's rating seems on the conservative side for this one so enjoy a fun tumble or two or three...you get the point. Mingo's an Energize fu@k bunny when he gets the proper charging.
Needless to say. The bang at the end leaves me needing to read WANTED, Part Two of Mingo's madness.
Recommended to readers that wish Hawaii Five-O pandered to their need for some hot manlove.
Favorite quote: "He never gave off a gay vibe. He gave off a cannibal vibe that unfortunately kept me hard whenever I was in his presence."

I quickly found my way into the story and immediately liked the main character Mingo. With a broken heart he tries to start over again and throws himself into work. The setting is adorable; it was very easy to imagine Hawaii. Mingo's job is quite exciting; a few more scenes with his investigative work would have been great. Within a few lines A.J. Llewellyn creates sympathy and antipathy for the secondary characters and I could understand the friendships and individual relationships very well. The author gets to the heart of Mingo's feelings. He was consistently easy to empathize with and I could feel his heartache and self-doubt. The novel is embellished with some erotic scenes and a lot of crackling tension.
The development of the story wasn't nearly as expected and the ending surprised me.
The audio book is narrated by Michael Dean. He is excellent at portraying the characters individually and increasing the tension.
At the moment there are six books with Mingo McCloud published. Hopefully the second audio book will be released soon.
I will totally admit that I wanted to read this book, because I wanted to meet a character named Mingo. In all my years of reading, in all the various genres, this was the first Mingo I had ever met. Needless to say, I was hoping the character was as quirky as the name. Of course, for all I know, Mingo could be a very common name in Hawaii, and I'm just making myself out to be an idiot. Wouldn't be the first time! *snort* 'Wanted' is the first book in a new series by A.J. Llewellyn and I was very excited to jump into it. Any description that references the word forensic always captures my attention. And forensic accounting? Sue me, I think it's terribly exciting.
Mingo's having a rough life. His mom up and sold the family home and moved to the mainland while, all the while, sending Mingo daily emails bemoaning her decision. His last relationship ended when he found his boyfriend cheating on him, again. Poor Mingo had a history with that boyfriend where the guy used Mingo's skills and then when he got what he needed, he ran around on him. So, Mingo changed his whole life and moved to the North Shore of Oahu hoping to start over. As a forensic accountant, Mingo works mainly on criminal cases, so being an hour away from Honolulu is no longer a problem, as if he's needed, he can get to court to testify. This way, though, it keeps him from running into his ex.
As a distraction, Mingo met Jason outside of the bakery and, well, let's just say Mingo's mornings are being filled with more than donuts. What can he say? He's horny. But, as far as his history goes, Mingo has horrible luck with men. When Benny, a criminal defense attorney and a friend, calls with a possible murder investigation, Mingo jumps right on that to keep busy. Strangely enough, Mingo catches Jason spying on him and he has no clue what is going on. I felt really bad for Mingo. He gets emotionally involved really quickly, but he tends to be attracted to users, and he just gets his heart broken.
Mingo and his best pal, Leilani, who also does work for him as a CPA and a Criminal Fraud Expert, jump into this latest mystery to find out who Jason was and what was going on. Leilani brings in Francois, ex Special Forces, to help go over Mingo's condo for surveillance equipment. I liked Francois immediately. Mingo has worked with him before, and had lots of fantasies about Francois, but Mingo is pretty sure he's straight. Plus, he's kind of scary, in that I'm-not-so-sure-he-won't-tear-my-head-off way. "I'd worked with Francois twice now, and had huge sexual fantasies about him. He never gave off a gay vibe. He gave off a cannibal vibe that unfortunately kept me hard whenever I was in his presence." But, oh WOW, are Mingo and Francois incredibly hot together. Francois kind of hit all my buttons!
I loved this book! Everything about it was wonderful. I can't wait to read more about Mingo, Francois, and Leilani. I'm also pretty darn sure that Mingo is going to keep tripping into trouble that his lover and his friend will need to help him with.
Turns out Mingo is a childhood nickname and his real name is Michael. *sigh*
NOTE: This book was provided by the publisher for the purpose of a review on Rainbow Book Reviews.
I will start off by saying that this story was strange. It was a great story, but some of the situations were really, really strange. So, let me start at the deep end of the pool with this. Okay, picture it: Mingo, his best friend Leilani, Mingo’s love interest Jason and Leilani’s girlfriend (actual girlfriend and not her BFF) Lucy, all take a late night trip to the police station to give their statements on the case of the missing young housewife (he’s a forensic accountant, she a certified fraud investigator). Mingo and Leilani are in the police station doing their thing leaving Jason and Lucy in the car. Mingo finishes with the police first, walks out into the parking lot to find the windows steamy. Oh, no, he thinks. No, no, no, this can’t be happening. Not again. Now, Mingo’s just crawled out of a relationship and still nursing a broken heart (his ex-boyfriend, Kaolin is a piece of work, let me tell you). Mingo walks to the car and catches Lucy licking Jason’s ice cream cone in the backseat (yes, that’s code for oral sex). Now Jason, I can see because he’s not ‘organically gay’ (he was ‘turned out’ in prison apparently) but Lucy supposedly is. At this point, Leilani walks out; Mingo stops her, warning her not to look inside. At this point, Lucy is hysterically laughing and practically falling out of the car. It’s a practical joke! Between Jason’s bizarre hot and cold behavior and the relationship between Mingo and his employer, Benny (which is a BIG can of bizarre by itself), I was lost. I’m in the damn Twilight Zone; Rod Serling is in the background with a cigarette scratching his own head. I go back a few pages, thinking that I missed something. No, it went down just like that. I was so caught off guard with that situation. That was a joke? On what planet was that supposed to be funny? Mingo is hurt, I mean, devastated, but then Jason isn’t really who he says he is. He’s actually one of those mercenary types and a prison escapee who was hired by none other than Benny! And the reason Benny hires this guy? Okay get this: to spy on Mingo. Benny is concerned that Mingo is still in contact and sleeping with his ex-boyfriend Kaolin who happens to be Benny’s ex. Now, here is where it gets real messy: Kaolin was with Benny and he cheated on Benny with Mingo and cheated on Mingo with the cop who—oh, it’s just too deliciously messy to give away further details, you’d just have to read the story! The book calms down when Mingo becomes reacquainted with Francois, the big and beautiful French speaking Afro-Caribbean security specialist he hires to find out who this Jason character really is, who hired him, and why he was sent to spy on Mingo. The relationship development between these two men is awesome. This book was beautifully strange with enough twists and turns to keep you on your toes. Well played, AJ Llewellyn. Well played indeed. I would definitely recommend this book. I loved it.
Voto: 4.5 stelle.
* SPOILER ALERT after second paragraph * Wow, what a wild ride this one was. I loved it from the beginning to the end. There are few mystery-type books I like, but this is definitely one of them.
Mingo is a forensic accountant and still hung up on his ex-lover whom he caught sleeping with another man. He runs into a man called Jason at a bakery and they start a love affair, even though Jason claims to be straight and is reluctant at first. When Mingo catches him going through his stuff he calls in Francois, a PI he's known for years to help him solve what's going on with Jason.
Even though Mingo is falling in love with Jason and starts having sex with Francois before the other affair has really ended (something I normally hate), in this case it all made sense. I guess the fact that Mingo's feelings are described so clearly and his confusion is made obvious helps. Also, the fact that Jason turns out to be a scumbag made me wish that Mingo would find someone else to fall in love with. So when he does, it feels like the happy ending Mingo deserves.
This is my first book by A. J. Llewellyn and it won't be my last. The author has a great writing style, so the book captivated me from the very beginning. And that didn’t stop right up to the last page. The story is told in a very entertaining way and I really like the setting in Hawaii. You have to like the main character, Mingo McCloud. Mingo may be successful in his career, but he has all the more bad luck with his private relationships. He has just broken up with his boyfriend when he meets and falls in love with Jason. But Jason has his own agenda. What's behind it and do they have a future? Mingo's current professional case is also intriguing. He has to find a missing housewife whose husband is suspected of murder. I also took the secondary characters, especially Mingo's lesbian friend and Francois to my heart. The book contains everything a good story needs: suspense, drama, hot sex scenes and emotional moments. Thank you for this great story and I hope the other books in the McCloud series will also come out as audio books. Michael Dean narrates the audio book and he did a brilliant job. He gave different voices to the different characters and brought them to life. It’s absolutely fun to listen to him. I had listened to the audiobook in one day. Aloha and highly recommend!
Mingo (Michael) McCloud is the first forensic accountant MC I've come across and I was pleasantly surprised by this start of a romantic mystery/suspense series. The sleuthing procedural aspects are quite 'tame' (read as non-life threatening) given the nature of Mingo's line of expertise but the author cleverly throws in co-incidental encounters and stalkers in disguise to spice things up a bit. For someone badly burnt twice by his cheating ex-boyfriend ... there was quite a bit of lively bedroom action for Mingo. It was also nice to find these pages populated by mixed/multi-racial characters who don't fall neatly into the straight/gay dichotomy. A series worth continuing (despite the cheesy beefcake book covers) methinks.

Wanted Mingo McCloud Honolulu Mysteries, Volume 1 By: A.J. Llewellyn Narrated by: Michael Dean
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it is a fast paced story and I found it captivating from start to end. This is my first book written by A.J. Llewellyn and it will not be my last. She fit an impressive amount of story is her novella sized story. I adored the lead character Mingo McCloud, a forensic accountant who gets hired to work cases, in this story he picks up a domestic case, husband is in prison and the wife is still missing. But that is not the only storyline, Mingo has his own drama, coming out of a relationship that went bad he gets involved with Jason, who is another mystery. He brings in his friend Leilani to help with the case he is working on and the Francois, a badass French-Caribbean ex special forces who is smoking hot. I loved how everything played out in this book, the story is cleverly plotted and contains drama, personal and work (crime), a touch of angst, some twists and turns, mystery, heartfelt and emotional moments and some hot romance. A.J. Llewellyn, thank you for this great story, loved Hula, the bonus story at the end too.
I listened to the Audible edition, Michael Dean is a talented narrator and versatile voice artist. He does an awesome job portraying the characters, bringing them to life and humanizing them with their emotions and personality. I love how he takes each role and makes it his one. He gives each character their own unique voice which makes it easy to follow the story and who is who. He is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another fantastic listen🎧📚🎧
I listened to this book in the audio of the boxed set of the first four books, performed by John Solo. So the following review is really for the set which I can't find on Goodreads.
I love audiobooks performed by John Solo but I’d never read a book by AJ Llewellyn, so when I was able to request a review copy of this audiobook, I jumped on it fast. 😊
This is a collection of 4 short novellas and I enjoyed all of them. Mingo McCloud is a forensic accountant and I’m pretty sure I’ve never read a book where the MC has that occupation. While I’m not sure I ever fully understood what he did as a forensic accountant, I fully enjoyed the mysteries he got involved in. However, I think what this series really is about is Mingo’s various relationships.
His ex keeps popping up and causing trouble; an attorney he works for off and on helps provide interesting cases to solve and Mingo’s forever love is a man of many talents and secrets. There is never a dull moment for Mingo and his associates.
I hope the rest of the series comes to audio because I’d love to listen to more of John Solo’s version of Mingo. I almost forgot to mention the hotness factor. While there are great stories in this collection there is also LOTS and LOTS of HOT sexy time and Mingo and Francois don’t mind the possibility of getting caught loving on each other. 😊
A complimentary copy of this audiobook was provided to me at my request but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author and/or narrator.
The Hawaiian setting entices me, but the relationship scenes are hard to enjoy as they do not fit my expectations of what cisgender gay men do in similar scenarios. I must remind myself that I am studying the female imaginative world of BL. I'll read sporadically a few pages and hope they'll put me to sleep as I read fiction before bedtime. While still left unfinished, to be completed in the indefinite future, I went into one Mahu (gay detective) novel from many series and finished it. Similarly set in Hawaii, that Mahu novel has two gay characters and two lesbian characters. The relationship scenarios were described in ways that I can readily believe. I could go on to enjoy the investigation as I was not stopped by relationship scenes that I, as a cisgender gay reader, find unbelievable.
Llewellyn has a frustrating ability to create believable relationships between characters only to throw a wrench into the relationship forcing the reader to reassess said relationship. Sigh. The emotional torture is what keeps us reading.
This book had just been turned into an audiobook when I started reading it, and I enjoyed the narration. It was a nice addition to the story.
I read books 2 to 6 because l am one of those people that like to read series starting with the second book and then if l like the couple and their story l will go back and find the first book of how they started. I feel like the start of every romance is the same it is what happen after the initial attraction that makes a relationship. I love stories about established couples. But l digress. I loved all the follow up books but when l went back to find book 1 it was out of print or whatever but then the author said she will re-publish so l waited. It was worth the wait. Like the previous reviewer said there were some strange things in the book but they were such that they kept your interest from beginning to end. One of them was how Mingo and his eventual love interest met. It was so quick it made no sense but then l thought what the hell it's make believe so why focus on it. In all, very good book and the sex scenes were hot and l love Mingo and Francois. I hope there is a book 7. Great job AJ as usual.
There is something about Minog McCloud that I fell in love with. So much went on in such a short space of time. I was soooo disappointed with Jason and then Benny until the introduction of the mysterious and dangerous Francois.
Good God. Had it really come to this? That I was hiring the world's craziest former superspy to investigate a guy I was hoping to quit loving before it was too late?
Francois was freaking awesome. *sigh*
Needless to say, I couldn't wait to get to book two.
This was 3.5 stars but I'm rounding up because it held my interest. It was just a BIT too crazy though. And . I did think the missing person mystery and the "mystery" of Jason running hot and cold throughout the whole book were well told.
A story heavy on MM Romance with a mystery subplot.
But this is mostly about Mingo attempts at forgetting his previous lover while engaging in satisfying his needs. He was pretty much at a stall when it comes to relationships until he meets Jason. The problem, Jason isn't exactly who he say he is. Can Mingo handle the answers he will find.
Light, entertaining, steamy hot scenes. I think Mingo has found his one and truly.
However I have to admit that I felt a bit sorry for Jamie and his fate at the end.
The story was fun and 100% AJ Llewellyn at his best. I have a real soft spot for any of his Hawaiian stories because he mixes a perfect blend of mystery/mythology and setting. Reading any of AJL's books makes me want to hop on a plane and go to Hawaii.
I have quickly become a fan of A.J. Llewellyn's writing. I picked this one up after I read and loved his Honeybone series, and I was not the least bit disappointed in this first book about Mingo McCloud. I enjoy this author's characters, and I also enjoy the settings that he has chosen. My only complaint has to do with one of my pet peeves--unprotected sex. Mingo has unprotected sex with two different people in this book, and that distracted me from the story just a bit.
Mingo is an interesting guy and it's quite refreshing to see another kind of job. I never heard of forensics accountant. The pacing was pretty fast and it felt like too much sometimes. I didn't like Jason at all, he gave me the creeps. I love Francois, but his arrival was botched and I would have loved to read more and more about him. I will probably read the next book because I want to see of them. I hope I won't be disappointed.
I really thought that Mingo and Jason would have made a good couple but they didn't really inspire me. Still I kept on reading because the author is really good and once Francois entered the picture I just knew he was the one. Loved this book!
I think I'm going to need to read the rest of the series. And I think I really liked Jason, damn it (but then, I really, really liked Francois, too, so it's all good)...and I want to go to Hawaii.
Rereading this series to add on the last book. I had forgotten how much set up there is for the character and the series in this one, yet it felt like a complete story. On to the next!
