Nora Roberts is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of more than 200 novels, including Hideaway, Under Currents, Come Sundown, The Awakening, Legacy, and coming in November 2021 -- The Becoming -- the second book in The Dragon Heart Legacy. She is also the author of the futuristic suspense In Death series written under the pen name J.D. Robb. There are more than 500 million copies of her books in print.
Early Roberts, and nowhere near what I expect from her now. I've come to expect a rich experience when I read her. Her books are almost like an immersive movie, making the scenery and people so alive that I sometimes forget I'm just reading.
These two fall short there. Part of that is the length. The two together are less than a single volume of one of her usual trilogies. Is that because of the market they were written for? Or did she hit that market because she hadn't yet developed her prose?
This pair was worth reading because I like Nora Roberts' style, and having discovered her well after she got really good, it was interesting to see almost a draft. Kind of like Christie's first Miss Marple, a bit fuzzy around the edges.
If you like NR, these two have some charm. If you're not familiar with her, go ahead and read these, but go on to some of her later, longer books. These 2 are like eating the menu in comparison.
As the Queen of Romance, Nora Roberts’ stories are like good wines. They withstand the test of time. “Dangerous Embrace” is a 2-in-one collection of two vintage Roberts books: “Treasures Lost, Treasures Found” and “Risky Business”. Both originally published in 1986, they’ve held up well for 35 years and the only clue that they’re not current is the absence of electronic gadgets, including the ubiquitous cell phone. Oh, and cigarettes too. People were smoking like steam engines in that era but you’ll not hear me waxing nostalgic for a comeback of the nicotine habit.
In “Treasures Lost, Treasures Found” Kate Hardesty hires Ky Silver to help her find an eighteenth century English merchant ship that went down in the Outer Banks area near Ocracoke Island. Even though Kate swore she’d never trust Ky again, he was the only person for the job. Until her father’s death Kate hadn’t known of his interest in finding this shipwreck and its cargo of gold. In his desk she found a cache of detailed maps, navigational charts, tide tables, etc. pinpointing what should be the location, but there were no guarantees and deep sea diving is risky business. Can they bury the hatchet and work together to search for gold?
“Risky Business” is set in Cozumel. Ex-pat Liz Palmer migrated to the Caribbean island ten years ago. With an abundance of hard work and a single-minded concentration she had made a life for herself and her daughter. Her dive shop and glass bottom tour boat businesses were successful because of her focus on details and satisfying the customer. But her orderly life takes a 180 U-turn when one of her employees is murdered and his twin brother Jason comes to Cozumel determined to avenge Jerry’s death. Working together they discover Jerry had been involved in drug smuggling and it had cost him his life. To further.complicate matters, there is an undeniable attraction between Liz and Jason. Even though Liz is averse to a romantic involvement, the chemistry between them is not to be denied. Can Jason convince her to “let go” and just “feel”?
Several years ago I thought I had read every book written by Nora Roberts but I was mistaken. These two romantic adventures had eluded my notice and I have to say I’m glad I discovered them. Four stars.
These 2 books were pretty good, only because I have come to expect more from Nora Roberts, her trilogies are exceptional and these are fairly early work for her. If you love Nora, they are definitely still worth a rea d but if you're new to get books, don't start here.
Mijn persoonlijke mening; Het verhaal las heel vlot.
I was disappointed in this book. I expected a bit more plot between the episodes of graphically-described sex. It seemed to me to a very shallow story where I could figure out what was going to happen before the story got developed. There was very little character development and there was not that much true connection between the two main characters. Perhaps it is that I do not read this genre much and my taste is different from mainstream readers but I would rather read a good mystery any day.
Ugh. Okay, so I like the first one. I’ve read it a few times and it always makes me want to watch the movie Fool’s Gold. 😂 The second one was awful. I hated that he smoked, but I was trying to be forgiving since I knew this was written in the 80s, even though people knew it was bad for you then. But he was so controlling and their first time had dubious consent. That was when I started skim reading. I really actually wish I’d just flat out stopped reading because the way he behaved with her daughter was so horrifying and creepy.
Samengevat. Een echt tussendoortje. Zou ik het herlezen. Nee.
The first book was just meh. A second chance romance where they don't really have the same values or goals but the sex was just too good so they fell in love I guess?
The second book was all sorts of gross where man pushes boundaries when she is vurnurable and we are supposed to be ok with that because it's for her own good. Doesn't ask just does stuff and she eventually capitulates. It is major ick! Stopped at end of chapter 3.
Book 1 - Treasures Lost, Treasures Found 3☆ I did not feel the connection between Ky and Kate and their lack of communication was too frustrating. Book 2 - Risky Business 4.5☆ I felt a genuine connection growing between Jonas and Liz and their characters were interesting and likeable. The storyline moved at a good pace and kept my attention throughout.
I love this book. The scenery is great, the people are realistic, and charming. The ending was great as always. I've never read one of your books that I didn't like, some more than others, but all great. I have and have read most of your books, under both names, and will continue to buy every one I can.
Two books from a very good writer. The second one caught my fancy and was the one that I liked the best. I had a rough time getting through the first one. Both are very good....
I am not a big fan of short stories but I did enjoy these two stories. The plots were simple and both stories held my interest. Nora Roberts’ stories have adventure, romance and danger which keep you reading.
Deceit, crime, murders, love wrapped up in two wonderful books. Fast moving and very original. Surprised around every corner. So thrilled to have the chance to read them. Thank you.
Nora Roberts never disappoints. I've read her books for years. Her words bring color and settings to such life you feel you are right there. She's a kindred spirit who will never forget what its like to be young.
What more is there to say; it's Nora Roberts!! She is an amazing story teller and I am never disappointed. The two books are completely separate, but each are equally engaging. I highly recommend this 2-in-1 collection as well as anything else written by the incomparable Nora Roberts.
I've read Nora Roberts books off and on for years. I've been disappointed with the current books but this was 2 older books in one and both were interesting and had great stories with good endings. It was also a great price. I highly recommend this book!
This set of two books are some classic Nora Roberts. Seems like forever since I have read any of her stories and I read two here about treasures and mysteries.
This is why Nora is my favorite authors. Her characters are real, exciting, intriguing and her stories keep you guessing. And the romance, aah, the romance.!
