Ephraim Kishon

Ephraim Kishon (Hebrew: אפרים קישון‎) was an Israeli writer, satirist, dramatist, screenwriter, and film director.

Born into a middle-class Jewish family in Budapest, Hungary, as Ferenc Hoffmann (Hungarian Hoffmann Ferenc), Kishon studied sculpture and painting, and then began publishing humorous essays and writing for the stage.

During World War II the Nazis imprisoned him in several concentration camps. At one camp his chess talent helped him survive as the camp commandant was looking for an opponent. In another camp the Germans lined up the inmates shooting every tenth person, passing him by. He later wrote in his book The Scapegoat, "They made a mistake—they left one satirist alive." He managed to escape while being transported to the Sobibor death camp in Poland, and hid the remainder of the war disguised as "Stanko Andras", a Slovakian laborer.

After 1945 he changed his surname from Hoffmann to Kishont to disguise his Jewish heritage and returned to Hungary to study art and publish humorous plays. He immigrated to Israel in 1949 to escape the Communist regime, and an immigration officer gave him the name Ephraim Kishon.

His first marriage, in 1946 to Eva (Chawa) Klamer, ended in divorce. In 1959, he married his second wife Sara (née Lipovitz), who died in 2002. In 2003, he married the Austrian writer Lisa Witasek. He had three children: Raphael (b. 1957), Amir (b. 1963), and Renana (b. 1968).

Humorističan i satiričan putopis kroz Evropu i SAD.

I kao što bi rekao Rick u Casablanci ''I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship''.

Well, had a blast. the rest in Hebrew.

If there is something like characteristic Jewish humour and satire, it is embodied in Kishon's work. This book made of semi-accurate travelling prose is very witty, amusing and it really doesn't lack spirit. Only on last 20 or so pages the whole thing really begins to drag, but the rest of it is ideal for some satire-inducing silly chuckling on the sofa.

Osrednje.

Izvanredan putopis. Pisac na sebi svojstven duhovito ironičan način dočarava svoja iskustva u opisanim zemljama.

German version of the Hebrew original. In English: The Seasick Whale: An Israeli Abroad.
The account of an Israeli traveler in the 1960s who is followed by trouble wherever he goes. This was totally hilarious and laugh-out-loud funny. The stations of his trip are: Greece, where he has an episode with butterflies; Italy, where he encounters too much of a good thing, Spaghetti, and the need for equestrian statues; Switzerland, the land of cleanliness and not so precise precision, where foreigners had better live up to the rules and regulations, and where nobody gets his jokes; France, where he takes the long scenic route in a taxi, learns about the dangers of smoking, faces some food problems, and is confronted with loose morals; England, where he learns a lesson in good manners, traditions, and English humour; finally America, where he tries to buy a used car, visits his uncle, encounters ants, large musical instruments, and studies the American character. If you can find this book somewhere, get it and enjoy.

Full-on Ü50-Humor voller Klischees aber technisch sehr versiert.
