Derek Landy is an Irish writer and screenwriter. In addition to the bestselling children's/YA series of Skulduggery Pleasant books, a supernatural mystery series starring Skulduggery Pleasant, a skeleton detective, and Valkyrie Cain, a young female magician, he has written two screenplays that have been made into films: the IFTA award winning "Dead Bodies" and the IFTA nominated "Boy Eats Girl". Landy himself was nominated for an IFTA for Best Script.

He doesn’t like to brag about all the awards he’s won, such as the Irish Book of the Decade, or the Red House in the UK, or all the other awards that he humbly displays on his mantelpiece. He is also far too modest to mention things like the first book being a Publisher’s Weekly Best Book of the Year, but would like to extend an invitation to Oprah to pop around one day for tea, in thanks for selecting his book for the Oprah’s Book Club Kids Reading List.

Derek plays too many video games, reads too many comics, and watches too many movies. He lives in Ireland with too many cats. Occasionally he talks to real people, but only when he absolutely has to.

Thoroughly enjoyable. I found the book to be a light and refreshing read. The characters are highly likable and the dialogue is rich in humour. Although the plot is straightforward at times, skullduggery’s mastery of unwavering indifference in times of crisis makes the story just that much more amusing. Definitely recommended.

This was read by my mother when she ran a book stall. She recommended it to my oldest son a few years ago and he whipped through the entire series. My oldest then recommended it to my youngest son who is now on book 4 and loving every minute so as an easy late night read I thought I would give it a go.

This book is a large volume and contains the first 2 books in the series.

These are great, fun, YA books. I liked the fact that the central protagonist is a young girl for a change who kicks arse where she has to. I liked the premise of the book and the pace.

The book never lets up as you read it. The action and intrigue is constant, there is clearly a back story here that is slowly going to be revealed and it appears that the reader of the series is in for a good time.

Highlights include:-

- A strong set of secondary characters
- Moral grey areas so no one is entirely good or entirely evil.
- Intrigue
- Well described action
- Genuinely funny banter at times. Not always, but enough.
- Skulduggery himself is a well conceived character
- A fluid written style.

I'm glad I read this. I can see why the boys enjoyed it as much as they did. I will happily recommend it to friends.

As an aside, I like the design of the covers as well. Its always good to see some proper illustration and art. As a package it is a wonderful thing for its target audience.

a great book, no i mean its awesome. A dead detective comes back to life as a skeleton in a suit and tie alongside his trusty sidekick, a teenage girl who can throw fire balls. Skullduggery is a good ghost rider. This book is exciting and fun and is perfect for teenagers. I recommend this book to everyone. Heck, i recommended them to a friend and now he is hooked. I'm still waiting for a movie to come out though. Please don't cast Nicholas Cage

I personally have not read it but I have been buying the whole series over the last 4 years (on the recommendation of a young lad I found perusing the bookshelves in our local store) as a Xmas present for my teenage grandson (He was 11 the 1st year). Every year I ask him what he would like for Xmas and he always says the next books in this series. Definitely a hit.
This year it will be Books 13 and 14. Then unless there are more releases, he (or I) will have to find something new.

I personally found the second book better than the first the plot was better it was more of a page turner and Valkyrie actually fought someone before she just sat back and watched people fight without actually helping at all.
I’ve actually read the first and second books separately.
Valkyrie was the strongest character in this book.
Three mad typical everyday bad guys well murders are on the loose all planning to se free a horrible creature that could destroy the world.

Valkyrie must try and track down this horrible terrifying in my case poor creature along with her fellow detective a skeleton skulduggery Pleasent.

Will they defeate it and stop the faceless ones from returning to EARTH?
Sorry that I described the second before the first sorry.
In the first one Valkyrie name is actually Stephanie and she has to defeate a evil vampire I think that’s what it is and take back the scepter before its to late then she finds out the name she takes...

I really really recommend this book to people who like mystery and adventures because it is an extremely exciting book and grabs your attention. This is a first person book. Basically it is about this average teenager called Stephanie Edgely meeting this person called Skulduggery Pleasant and becomes interested in him about new magic and things, and they go together and solve crimes in different adventures.

I adored the first book in the series. I rather enjoyed the second book in the series. Unfortunately I’d grown out of them by the time I got to the third book.

It’s a wonderful idea for a series, and it’s thoroughly engaging. Alas, I grew up too quickly for my enjoyment to be sustained – something that really disappointed me as I would have liked to know where things went.

Nevertheless, at the time it was a fun read.

Only read the first of the two in this book but having read the first one at the age of 11, I picked it up again a few months ago and enjoyed it twice as much. Fantastic book, can't wait to read the rest of the series.
