Although I have zero interest in basketball, Inoue Takehiko san has successfully captured my attention and ensured my everlasting loyalty to the manga he created, Slam Dunk, which is by far one of the best I've read in my entire life. Every single match was filled with action, anxiety, and stubborn hope.
Inoue san did a great job with the main characters' development, particularly Sakuragi. He might be special, in that he is an extremely quick learner, but he is not infallible, or immune to making silly, stupid, and sometimes infuriating mistakes. His growth was gradual, realistic, and inspiring. He is REAL. Strong, tenacious, and unexpectedly kind. He can kick your ass, but only if you try to bully him and his great group of friends. Seriously, they embody my "friendship goals" in life.
Not to mention the other four in the "Big Five", namely, Akagi and his unwavering resolve, Ryouta with his adorable banter with Sakuragi, Mitsui and his ridiculously amazing shots, and Rukawa, who is both unlikeable but also impressive, in his own quiet way. Not a favourite though (I've had it with the silent, brooding type).
I wish there were more chapters to this manga, but I admit the ending was incredibly satisfying. That final shot was everything. I haven't felt this proud of a fictional character in a very long time. And the high five!!
Also, Anzai sensei's faith in Sakuragi was spot-on. You gotta give it to the guy, he has a good eye.
It was so hard not to cry after seeing Shohoku win, with the winning shot made by the genius himself, Sakuragi.
This manga will be the last non-one shot manga I'll read this year, and I'm glad my spontaneity didn't fail me. Slam Dunk has proven to me that it is a classic and at the same time wonderful story not only of basketball, but of the very essence of sportsmanship taught to the youth.
The composition of Shohoku is as realistic as it could be. The captain, Akagi, is a strong leader and the foundation of the team. Mitsui, who once got lost because of his pride and love for basketball, displayed his skill and talent and made a salvation for himself. Miyagi, a dedicated point guard and everyone's supporter, showed to everyone that he's the best at what he does despite his height. Kogure, Akagi's friend and a mediator of the team, didn't once think in every game that his team's going to lose. Rukawa, the star rookie, has proven to himself that he could do better than to work alone, showing everyone that a King still needs a helping hand. Yasuda, at one point, was able to change the rhythm of the game through his relaxed technique. And finally, the self-proclaimed genius, Sakuragi, who only faked being an athlete to impress Haruko, has exhibited a great character development, which is the main theme of the manga.
Along with their individuality, all teams in the story have their main strengths. All these, of course, can be explored along its story, which I will not discuss further to avoid getting out of my point.
This manga is meant to inspire the youth, even those who are not into sports. The message of this manga is to tell the youth to not give up, to keep chasing their dreams, and to make the best out of their high school years. Slam Dunk is not only a story about sports; it's also a story of how a generation of youth can direct their own lives by identifying what they want to become and working through various obstacled to strengthen their determination.
This is without a doubt one of the best manga out there with a variety of inspirational characters, impressive storyline, and extraordinary art by master Inoue. 31 volumes are not enough and I was left with the feeling of wanting more; I doubt anybody would ever get enough of the thrilling games. What I personally found mesmerizing is the characters' growth; I loved witnessing how each one is maturing both in confidence and in abilities; their determination to achieve their goals. Sakuragi's development is nothing short of inspirational; he evolved from zero to a hero. All in all, we all need this dose of encouragement to get us motivated to go for our goals in life and Takehiko Inoue did us good.
I would love to rate this whole series more than 5 stars because it honestly deserves it. I picked up the manga as soon as I finished the anime and I. Couldn't. Stop. Reading! !
I have zero complaints. The characters, the relationships, the story itself and the humor, everything was perfect. I laughed until I couldn't breathe, I cheered until I felt like my heart was going to burst and I cried because ended.
This is not just a review of Vol. 31, but a review of the entire series.
As I was driving to work tonight knowing I would finish this series I didn't believe I would rate the series 5 stars. I was trying to compare this series with other 5 star reads, and considering I had a rocky start with this series, I felt that this wold end up being a 4 star series in all: Vol. 31 changed everything.
As I was reading Vol. 31 I felt the same way I felt reading those final volumes of Haikyu! I was rooting for Shohoku, but I thought I knew how the story would end, and I was surprised. I was grinning ear to ear as I was speeding through those pages, admiring every single panel and really feeling like I was there watching those final seconds. It was that intense flare of emotions and feeling that sealed the deal. There is a reason this series is heralded in the sports genre. I cared about basketball in those final chapters. There was no reason not to give this a 5.
Thank you Takehiko Inoue
I am beyond glad Viz Media decided to reprint this series recently, if that hadn't happened I probably would never had read this series or sought it out after I took a break from getting volumes from my college ILL. Thank you Viz.
The end was well but it kept me longing for more. Sakuragi found a love which he didn't expect. I believe that is how author tired to draw the full circle. It is a great piece of fantastic storytelling. Author decided to keep the scope limited. While I don't agree with that decision I can appreciate. Perhaps dragging a story longer is not always good. Perhaps the feeling that it could become so much more keeps it stay with people. But, all these characters came to be their own heroes. That is much much hard to achieve in a story. Amidst all the battle the lesson to overcome their own boundaries became much more important than anything else.
I loved Slam Dunk. I love everything about it. The final battle was so epic! Those emotions shall never be forgotten. Everyone should read this fantastic piece of fiction.
Finally finished with the series, and now I know why it is regarded as one of, if not, the best sports manga of all time.
Takehiko Inoue creates nail-biting, highly dramatic, edge of the seat moments, where the readers can't help but root for the characters, who are vibrant, lifelike and so engaging.
The ending, although bittersweet, is perfect and reflects our real life in a sense, as well.
Sayonara 💜 Thanks for make me laugh from my heart and get excited when i was very depressed And thank you for reminding me that it's not always about winning it's important but I mustn't give up and i mustn't loss hope but i should find till the end until i become a better person proud of his efforts thank you guys thank you 💜💜
Slam Dunk, Vol. 31 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the last seven chapters (270–276) of the on-going manga series.
This tankōbon concludes the second round of the National Tournament with Shohoku High School and Sannoh Industry Affiliated High School.
As Takenori Akagi scores the foul shots, Hanamichi Sakuragi requests to keep playing. When the game continues, Sakuragi blocks Masashi Kawata's shot, and Kaede Rukawa and Ryota Miyagi help Hisashi Mitsui to reduce Sannoh's lead to only one point. Sakuragi and Akagi keep blocking Sannoh's attacks, and then Sakuragi helps Rukawa to score. Shohoku managed to win with a buzzer beating slam dunk, with a score of 79–78, allowing them to pass to the third round against Aiwa. However, with the absence of Sakuragi, Shohoku lost terribly against Aiwa and were eliminated from the Nationals rather quickly.
Sometime later, Haruko Akagi sends Sakuragi a letter, telling him that Kiminobu Kogure and Akagi graduated, and now Miyagi is the new captain. Mitsui stayed in Shohoku, while Haruko became a new manager. As Sakuragi is reading the letter, he finds Rukawa training in the beach as he joined the All Japan training camp. Meanwhile, Sakuragi is still in rehabilitation in order to heal his spine so he can continue playing basketball.
This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Takehiko Inoue. Although, Shohoku High School defeated Sannoh Industry Affiliated High School, they failed to win the Nationals, which is rather fitting as Hanamichi Sakuragi was injured. The epilogue was rather bittersweet – it made sense that Shohoku didn't win the Nationals, but leaving the ailing Hanamichi Sakuragi still convalescing left more story to tell.
Overall, Slam Dunk was a wonderful coming of age story about the most unlikely of basketball players in Hanamichi Sakuragi – a slacker who is good for nothing other than fighting and former leader of a gang. Finding basketball by chance, he is eventually centered and found a new purpose in the sport. Although he is still injured at the end of the series – there is still hope.
All in all, Slam Dunk, Vol. 31 is a wonderful conclusion to a wonderful sports manga.
I have finally understand my fellow pinoy's clamor for the national game anime continuation. The game against Sannoh is just incredible. Even the word incredible is an understatement. I have read until 2am. My phone's battery was at 4%, i stopped at the end of Vol28. I have learned my lesson. Only two volumes to go. My battery will not last through that. Woke up at 8am.
I am proud of everyone. I was in tears. Mitsui trusting on his body. Coach Anzai proud of him. Coach Anzai giving Sakuragi high five. The bench warmers giving confidence to Sakuragi Kogure's flashbacks were heartwarming. Gori thanking them. Their trust to each other. Even Kiyota rooted for them! And the tensai...i cried for the tensai. Giving his all to the game, diving for the ball, jumping and jumping for the rebound while his back is aching! ALL FOR THE LOVE OF BASKETBALL. NOT EVEN ONCE DID HIS EYES WENT HEARTY HEART FOR HARUKO. I had tears, not even a John Green book can come close. I cried not because i was hurt but because i felt their passion, their love for the game. That passion i wished i have, even if kills me.
Ahhh i never thought i could write a review like this.
Being a fan of the anime for more than a decade, i have never imagined wanting to meet an anime in person. I have lots of crushes on this manga but while in the shower earlier, i have caught myself wishing to meet Sakuragi.
For that one moment, i forgot he is only a manga character. For that one moment, i forgot he is not a real person.
Volume 31 was the perfect culmination for the perfect manga. I read this with tears in my eyes, the whole volume. I got very emotional because of everything that was happening and because i was at the end of this masterpiece.
FInally after 31 volumes you see what Shohoku is capeble of, because after 31 volumes (maybe 30, it kinda happened in the previous volume) you see a real team, the 5 memebers going in the same direction at the same time. What an incredible ending, funny, emotional and logical.
The anime marked me for life and became my fvourite of all time. It got me full into anime and basketball. And after all this years i can safetly say that the manga did the same thing. My favourite piece of art of all time.
As for the whole series, i tink Inoue is the real tensai. What he created will forever be among the best shounen of all time. Excelent in everyway, characters, story, basketball. But from all of that, the most importan thing is characters. The characters he created and developed throughout 31 volumes are perfect. Their pasion and struggles in life and in basketball, that's what really makes this manga epic.
Great manga, great story, awesome but a bit sad ending. Though Inoue has left readers with uncertainty, he also drops a handful of hope and most importantly, friendship.
Slam Dunk, together with Yuyu Hakusho and Rurouni Kenshin are the animes that defined my childhood. I faithfully followed those series from start to end. And having to experience Slam Dunk again in its graphic literature format truly gives me a sense of nostalgia and brings back such memories. This has been a truly great ride for me and I sincerely thank Inoue for giving the world this story and sharing his talent.
The curtain has finally dropped, but I will remember the happiness and thrill I have felt reading Slam Dunk.
I can't believe I've finished the whole series within 1 and a half months. I flew through this. It was amazing. Absolutely loved this series a lot. The characters were fantastic and likeable and interesting and the games were great and you can tell Inoue plays Basketball himself given all his little extra knowledge throughout the series and I just loved it. It ended how I predicted it would and I was happy about this and the whole series overall was just fantastic. I'm glad I purchased this series and got to read it. I know, I am late to the game but better late than never, right? Thank you Takehiko Inoue for this fantastic read.
Great ending to a great series. I don’t normally pick-up sports/shounen books, but after watching the anime, I needed to know what happened after and boy, I was NOT disappointed. The series had a lot of heart and humor. The basketball detail was easy to follow. The characters all stayed true to themselves and there was a satisfying growth with Hanamichi, the MC. It’s a series that I’m sad to let go. It’d be nice if one day, the rest of this wonderful story gets animated, but I won’t hold my breath.
This manga, Slam Dunk will be finished, it makes me sad and happy. I do not want it to finish because I like this manga so far. This manga is so realistic, the setting is high school student. The end of this manga, you can find the page of spread. This scene is the most famous for readers. You must be checked it. I am sure you will move. Sakuragi is grown as a basketball player.
I’ve finally read all volumes, and I realized that this manga is getting more fun, as the story moves to the end. Actually we could see how the protagonist grows through practices and games. Also this let us know how important friends around us are. On the other hand, I’m sure this manga is good example of education, so I recommend you to read!!
