This book was fantastic. The story was filled with action and some suspense and the characters were to die for. They were well developed and I actually cared about what happened to them.
The story is set in Scotland in the early 1700s and focuses around Lachlan and Catriona and their clans.
Lachlan is betrothed to Catriona's sister for the sake of uniting the clans, Elizabeth and let's just say the relationship didn't work out. *No spoilers*. Fast forward some years and lots of drama later, he ends up Catriona who he thinks does not want to be with him and he's not so sure he wants to be with her, either but he thinks it can work. She has stipulations and he agrees to them and they get married.
I have to love Catriona. She'd never been treated well by her family and when something real came along, she couldn't accept it and wondered about Lachlan's sincerity. She was indeed an innocent and I think she may have seen herself as unlovable even though she'd loved Lachlan since they were children.
Flip this around and Lachlan thinks he's unlovable because he has a disfigured hand and he thinks he's inept at protecting the people he loves. The reality of that was he was a very handsome, able man that just didn't see it in himself all of the time.
I knew there was something fishy about Niall, too but we don't find out the truth about that until the end of the book. There was mystery involved there, too. I had my suspicions about it but I wasn't sure until it was revealed.
I've read lots of romances in my day and I don't think I've read a love scene that was so well written as the first time for Lachlan and Catriona. It isn't very often that a scene like that takes my breath away and the way he treated her was beyond reproach. It was so sweet and quite an awakening for them, especially her. It was a great scene.
There were some wrong word uses in the book but they weren't bad enough to take away from the story unlike some other books I've read. The story and the characters were solid and carried the book.
I was long overdue for reading a book this good. It was done with style and feeling and those two work so well together. Way to go, Eve Cameron!
