probably a high school or first year college humanities text book. There are four main sections: 1 Man in society, 2 Mind and the Problem of Knowledge, 3 The World Around Us: Science and Other Values, 4 The World Within: Ethics and Morality. Each section is further divided into reading sets, each with an introduction and 3 or 4 readings. Each set of readings is followed by vocabulary, questions on 1 Form and Technique such as an English teacher would assign, 2 For Analysis and Discussion tending toward history and philosophy, 3 For Speculation containing discussion questions which are not literally answered in the text, 4 Suggested Theme Topics - for writing assignments. Most of the readings have stood the test of time even though the book was assembled in 1958
Some good selections; some not so good. Particular favorites: "Wealth" - Andrew Carnegie, "Some Varieties of Defense Mechanisms" - Laurance F. Shaffer + Edward J. Shoben, "Nature" - Alexander von Humboldt, "To Serve Man" - Damon Knight, "The Most Dangerous Game" - Richard Connell.
