Includes African American artist profiles, offers an examination of the social and cultural context of every type of art form from painting to performance art, and looks at the role of the Black artist
This was a good and informative read. Loved how it followed our history in this country and how it talked history but then talked about our artistic out put. Lived how there were pictures of the work being discussed. What I didn't like was the lack of a conclusion.
The end of the last chapter was like hitting a brick wall. I would have liked to have seen how the artist concludes the thought that being diasporally linked will create shared aesthetics across cultures. That was talked about in the introduction but wasn't concluded after you received all of the great information that was in the book. Over all though it was a great book.
comprehensive, engaging, and thorough. the ending was a bit abrupt, but overall contained enthralling analysis that contextualized black art practices in the 20th century. written in easily digestible and plain language that was easy to follow and highly effective. really enjoyed this one.
A great reference for black artists. Not at all complete but somehow very comprehensive in terms of following trends of black expression in visual art over the years. Inspirational.
Really very comprehensive and informative reference book for those seeking to look at the history and influences within Black Art and culture. Some of the images are so beautiful too.
