Usually books that contain too many references to God or sound preachy are a DNF for me. But this one wasn't like that. First, it's not preachy at all. Second, it does have many references to God, but you can substitute "Higher Power", "Spirit", or the name of the God you worship, and the meditation for that day immediately applies to any faith.
This is one that I want to buy in paper format and use for my daily meditation practice. It's a beautiful book.
Ok, so technically I haven't finished this book, but its a daily devotional so 🤷 This book has short quotes from A Course In Miracles. I am enjoying it and it's a nice addition to my morning routine.
For me, I still find 'A Course in Miracles' difficult to decipher on its own without an interpretation. So some days the meditations were helpful but most days they went right over my head.
This meditation book is based on an original book, A Course in Miracles written in old Christian English by two psychology professors at Columbia University whom neither were spiritual but offers spiritual philosophy which is conveyed in their book. All meditation verses notate the entry utilized by Holden from the Course textbook, Workbook, the Manual for Teachers, Psychotherapy, or Song of Prayer supplement. A Course in Miracles goal is to teach people to make an “exchange of separation for salvation” maintaining the exchange is an inner gift. One of the psychologist authors stated she began to have dreams of a spiritual nature and decided to share her spiritual experiences and their meanings with the world.
The Acknowledgment section is where Holden states, “A Course in Miracles has blessed my life and work.” Holden is also a student of the course program and uses its philosophy and information in his speaking engagements and workshops he organizes around the world.
Holy Shift! representing A Course in Miracles is similar to the Book of Proverbs in the Bible and reads like a sage of the ancient world sharing their perception and wisdom with those who listen. Holden warns not to replace this course with the Bible but rather use it as an accompaniment with other Bible study supplements. The book has an uplifting appeal for people needing further encouragement outside of their regular Biblical daily reading. I recommend to those who are curious regarding A Course in Miracles and want more understanding of its philosophy and teachings.
I received this book from Hay House Book Nook in exchange for an unbiased opinion in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission guidelines.
Robert Holden’s Holy Shift! 365 Daily Meditations from A Course in Miracles is designed to serve as a daybook, with a set of daily meditations featuring excerpts from the metaphysical text A Course in Miracles. The book reflects Holden’s ongoing focus on the Course (the title is itself a play on the Course’s teaching regarding shifts in perception). Holy Shift! presents an excerpt from the Course for each day, and reflects both the Course’s self-study structure and its adaptability to individual spiritual journeys. Holden also provides an introduction explaining the background and operation of the Course, and the book can serve as both a helpful introduction to the text to those who are not familiar, or as supplemental material for those already working with the Course.
I had received the book as an ARC from Hay House via NetGalley, but found it very difficult to read (due to formatting) on my Kindle Fire. Consequently, I waited until the book was available from my public library before rendering a review. I am glad that I waited, as the final product was nicely done indeed, and I’m tempted to add this book to my personal devotional collection.

I love "A Course in Miracles." It can be confusing to navigate and it took me a while to get into the swing of the language. That being said, "Holy Shift" is an aid to "A Course in Miracles" teachings. If the reader wants a quick meditative text, "Holy Shift" is definitely a great resource. Indeed, Holden breaks up "A Course in Miracles" into daily, easy to understand passages that invite readers to rest upon such profound wisdom.
The downside? I noticed a great majority of the passages were from the workbook portion of "A Course in Miracles." Having gone through the entire workbook, I'm a little wary to suggest "Holy Shift" to readers. Perhaps as an introduction... a spark-note of the original text, yes, but had Holden provided more insight or interpretation "Holy Shift" would be top notch. Instead, it's more of an abbreviated version, lacking little more than well-edited meditations that can be found in the "A Course in Miracles" workbook.
Thank you to Hay House and NetGalley for providing me with an e-galley for a fair and honest review/ bookseller purposes.
"Holy Shift!: 365 Daily Meditations from A Course in Miracles" is a beautifully curated collection of inspiring excerpts, skillfully edited by Robert Holden. Each daily meditation offers a moment of pause and reflection, grounding the reader in the transformative teachings of A Course in Miracles. While some entries feel more impactful than others, the book overall serves as a wonderful companion for anyone seeking to align their thoughts with love and forgiveness. A valuable resource for both new and seasoned students of ACIM.
