Although he started from a hardscrabble childhood, Milton Hershey became a successful candy maker through hard work, innovation, and good intuition into what would appeal to his customers.

When Milton first started out on his own, his candies were a hit, but his business sense was meager and before long he was forced to close up shop. Some attribute his low business skills to his subpar education, though his dreamer father's impulsive nature also contributed to financial losses. Milton was savvy enough to learn all he could through hands-on observance, experimentation, and practice, and each experience taught him something positive. He persisted in following his passion and his lucky break did come. Following that success, Milton continued to seek out and try new ideas, including selling his caramel business to focus on chocolate which he believed to be the future.

Milton continued to take risks that paid off handsomely for him and his workers. His Hershey chocolate bar was an affordable, widely available, and popular chocolate treat. Production was on the rise so he planned a huge factory and a town for its workers, offering benefits and comforts that other company towns did not provide, and over the years added social, cultural, and lifestyle amenities. His workers made chocolate on an assembly line and gained financially from profit-sharing. Even with all of his success with the Hershey chocolate bar, Milton created another product that would become even more famous, the Hershey Kiss.

Milton Hershey was a generous and benevolent man who believed in sharing his success with those helped get him there. He used his wealth and status to help those around him gain skills and better living conditions. He opened the Hershey Industrial School for orphan boys and secured its future, improved and added onto Hershey Park, helped the factory and town survive the Great Depression, and provided chocolate bar rations to soldiers in World War I.

Milton Hershey may not have come from much financial stability or a steady home life, but he was a man who believed that a business owner should conduct himself with great integrity. He felt strongly that anyone who had plenty of money should share it. I highly recommend this biography on the renowned and game-changing candy maker; Hershey has left a sweet mark on the world, both through his chocolate empire and his altruistic gifts.

Who Was...? biography series for middle grade brings an inspiring man – Milton Hershey - who created the first American chocolate company, and also turned out to be one of the greatest philanthropists.

Milton Hershey’s (1857-1945) father was a dreamer trying different ventures that left the family in dire conditions. His mother couldn’t take it anymore and left her husband taking Milton with her. Milton wasn’t a good student and his mother needed his help. So his education ended at twelve. He could barely read and write.

He didn’t like his first job working for a printer, but his second job working at ice-cream parlor was a different story. He observed how different kinds of ingredients were mixed to create new candies. He began experimenting on his own.

At nineteen, he opened his own shop in Philadelphia. It was a hit from the start, but he didn’t know how to manage a business and it failed.

During his failed ventures, he learned that he could make more money by selling in large quantities. Instead of opening another shop, he borrowed money from the bank and opened a small caramel factory. A man from England visiting Lancaster loved Milton’s caramel and placed a big order which allowed Milton to pay off a bank loan and invest in more equipment.

He continued to experiment with new ways to make caramel. He did so well that by the early 1890s, he was one of the richest men in Lancaster.

He took a trip to Europe where he learned about chocolate being a new big thing. Milton became so obsessed with making chocolate that he sold his caramel business in order to focus on chocolate.

Before making one chocolate bar, he invested in building a huge chocolate factory and a town for all its workers. He also tried a new way of making chocolate on an assembly line, and he continued to experiment with chocolate.

By 1905, the factory was making a hundred thousand pounds of chocolate a day.

Milton was generous. He continued to improve the town he built for workers, adding post office, library, bank, and zoo.

In 1907, he opened a park for all residents. He was one of a kind, believing that giving back to community was as important as making money. He shared his success with his workers, giving them a bonus each year from company’s profits.

Milton and his wife couldn’t have children. Instead, he started a school for orphan boys. After the passing of his wife, he spent a lot of time with the boys.

In memory of his wife, he gave all his stock in Hershey to the school. Till today, the school is richer than most universities in America.

This biography illuminates an incredible man who from his father’s experiences knew that finding what he was looking for could take many trials and errors before succeeding. His mother instilled the principles of hard work in him which carried him through his search for the success. When achieving his goal, his natural instinct, was to share his success with those who worked for him and support community he lived in. His generosity continues to make legacy for him. A man who barely knew how to read and write turned to be a great success story and above all one of the most generous people ever.

This illustrated biography series for young readers, ages 7-10, is presented in a relatable way, with simple sentences, and insightful inserts.

This was a lot of fun to read with my son. He needed to read biographies for school, and I thought it was fitting that we read this together.

Milton Hershey changed our lives--or actually, I may not have existed had it not been from him. He took my grandfather in to his home for orphaned boys. He educated my grandfather and his school and gave him a trade without which he may have very likely ended up a societal deviant (as he was headed down a very unruly road in his young life).

What a giving man Hershey was. He felt a great responsibility to give back and to make life good for those around him. He worked hard, failed a lot, but kept trying until he hit pay dirt--or should I say--until he hit cocoa beans! What a great example of an inventor, businessman, and philanthropist.

An informative look at the savvy, inventive man behind the Hershey Chocolate Company. I was surprised and heartened to discover that Hershey gave so much back to the community, including building the entire town of Hershey to house and accommodate his workers as well as establishing the Milton Hershey School for orphans since he and his wife were unable to have children of their own. It's nice to know that the wealthy creator of such delicious chocolate was also a stand-up human being.

Wow. At first I just wanted to read about him because he's the one credited for bringing chocolate to America. He's amazing enough in my eyes just for that act alone. But then to hear his rags-to-riches story, and see how completely generous he was with everything he had, he truly is one of my heroes now.

This book is amazing like all the others. 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders might enjoy this biography. Most kids liken myself don't usually like biographies but these books make me want to read all the others. If. I had to compare these biographies with other biographies these are way better for younger kids. In this book it explains what happened in Milton's life and why he wanted to start a chocolate factory.

I read this one in one sitting. 100 illustrated pages of delectable chocolate history. Milton Hershey was not only a confectioner, but also the pioneer of selling soft caramel in the United States. Mr. Hershey came from a line of dreamers. Milton’s father Henry, would come up with ideas one after another with little to no lasting success. It was then that a young Milton worked for a Candy Store and learned how to make soft caramel which kept and stayed soft. After learning the tricks of the trade, he went off to business for himself. It wasn’t easy, Mr. Hershey actually failed in a couple businesses before striking it big.

Mr. Hershey’s love for learning sent him off to places like Germany and England where he learned about making sweet milk chocolate. Later Mr. Hershey would found a town (Hershey, PA), a school (Hershey’s Industrial School) to help orphaned boys and a theme park (Hershey’s Theme Park). After a huge life of successful business ventures, Mr. Hershey then left his money to the Hershey Industrial school that helped Orphaned boys, so that it would be around long after he had passed away.

A great confectioner, man and philanthropist. A fun fast read for anyone who desires to know more about the origin of the Hersey Chocolate Company.

This was a very good book that my 10-year old daughter and I read for her wax museum project. She is writing a paper on Milton Hershey and will pose as a wax figure of him next week at school. We really enjoyed this book because it provided a lot of information about his life and it had an easy flow to it. We both learned a lot of about him. For instance, I learned that chocolate was not widely sold in the United States before Mr. Hershey began manufacturing it. Also, I knew that there was a Hershey, Pennsylvania but not that Mr. Hershey founded it as a town for his employees. I recommend this book for anyone who would like to learn more about the man who brought Hershey kisses to America.

Do you love chocolate? How about a good ole original Milk Chocolate Hershey's Bar? Well, this book is the book for you. In this book we start off in Milton Hershey's young years, where he moves from school to school, as his Father couldn't find a successful business. Milton, after his parents split up, got the OK from his Mom to stop school and get a job. Milton starts working in a candy store and finds his dream job. Milton goes on through life to success, fail, and go up and down in business. He shares and learns new things and ideas, loses and gains, as Milton Hershey lives his "SWEET" life!

I have always loved the "Who Was..." series and this one does not fail. The book structures in a very informative, descriptive way and tell wonderfully of the life of Milton Hershey. I wouldn't change a thing, partly because I didn't know much about Milton Hershey in this much depth and now I do! Even if you don't like or enjoy Non-Fiction, this book is great for you because it is structured also in a story-like way! I highly recommend this to you reading this review and your friends and family, especially if you want something "SWEET" or if you LOVE CHOCOLATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I always buy these books when we travel as a family and read them out loud. In this case, we were visiting Hershey, PA-- the park, chocolate world and the city-- You learn a lot at those places, but these books are great at telling us more personal history of their subjects. And we always like how much more we know than what the locations we visit tell us. :) And in this one we learned about the philanthropic side of Milton Hershey and all the good he did with his wealth-- for his employees, communities his businesses are in, his suppliers, schools and orphans-- the list goes on. He was a remarkable man and we could all learn from him.

Yes, the reading level is geared towards younger children-- but the content is for all! My kids are teenagers-- these are quick read, information packed books that take 30 minutes to read!

There was a little boy named Milton Hershey. when he was little his mom told him that he needs to start getting a job. So Milton did lots of things to get money. He tried to farm and he had failed. So he thought of making chocolate. No one had thought of the name chocolate before. So he had got a machine to make the chocolate. So he had a shop selling chocolate when he got older and had his own shop. He had made money and more money. He got so sick that he did not get to work for many weeks. So he had to shut down his shop. Then he had to go back to work. A year later he got another shop in New York. He make a lot of money. Milton Hershey was very famous for his work.

I thought this book was very good. One thing I thought at first was that Milton would be a guy that was selfish and spent all his money on himself. Now I realize he is very generous, giving a school to boys, giving a nice home to his employes and donating a lot of his profit to a boys school cuz boys aren't treated fairly compared to girls. somthing I can connect to is that my cousin goes to the school he created that is now; Pen State

QOTD: What is your favorite candy?

“Who was Milton Hershey?” by James Buckley Jr., is a true story of one of the greatest chocolate companies and the person who created it! Milton Hershey was born in Derry Township, PA in 1857. He didn’t have an easy life growing up. His family was constantly moving around due to his father’s poor choices. Yet this didn’t stop Hershey from going into the candy industry. Hershey first learned to work with caramel and later decided to work with chocolate. Milton not only created his chocolate company, but the town of Hershey, Pennsylvania to run it. He also created Milton Hershey School to give orphaned boys a bright future.

(Book 64 of 100) I love eating Hershey chocolate! It is my favorite chocolate because it doesn’t have peanuts in it, so I can eat it without breaking out. (And before you ask, I am not being paid for this, I just really love Hershey chocolate). Before reading this book, I never gave much thought to the man behind my favorite chocolate bar. After reading the book, I was surprised he started off with basically nothing and now has left behind a legacy of one of the greatest candy companies ever! I would give this book a 4/5-star rating. I would recommend this for fourth-grade or higher and anyone who likes to read biographies (especially ones about sweets).

Who was Milton Hershey written by James Buckley Jr. Hershey was a candy store owner. It did not work out for him many times so he had many jobs working for his dad and other jobs. He had candy jobs in a lot of places but most of the time he did not stay that long. His parents separated and he stayed with his mom. He once owned a candy business that worked out because he found out the secret to making the best caramel. He became rich because a person loved Hershey’s caramel and he bought a bunch of it. He made his own town with the money he made and he went on a trip with his wife kitty that he married. They were going to go on the Titanic but his schedule changed and he went on a different boat. They arrived in Colorado and he watched a chocolate machine for hours and he bought all the parts and more machines to make chocolate. He eventually made a chocolate bar called Hershey's. Everyone loved it. Hershey got even more rich. He then added churches, hospitals and more houses to the town he made. He then made Hershey Kisses and people loved those too. Him and Kitty went on more trips and then Kitty got sick she died a little while later and Hershey kept a little picture of her in every room. He kept going on trips and on his 88th birthday the people in the town threw a big party for him. Hershey died a little later on October 13, 1945. I can connect to the theme because I love chocolate and it was entertaining to learn about the person who made Hershey’s. I rate this a 5 star because I liked how it told us a lot about Hershey's life and it told us that it did not work for him every time. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes Hershey’s!

The book I was reading this month was Who Was Milton Hershey by James Buckley Jr. It was a great book and I liked it a lot. In this book it told me all about his childhood and were he came from. He was raised on a farm in Pennsylvania but it was far away from family so he had to work hard. But his farming life failed so he headed back home where he would try to make a living off oil pumping. But it did not work either so he went to work in Royer's ice cream garden. Then he made his own shop making caramels in Philadelphia and his shop was booming with customers and it was a hit. Then a person from England was visiting and he ordered and bought a great amount of caramels and now he was one of the riches men in Landcaster. Then he bought a big facility and made it his factory. But then he remembered something he cousin told him "The caramel business is a fad" and that convinced him to convert to chocolate. So he sold his caramel company and put his energy to chocolate. Then he met Catherine Sweeney and eventually they got married. And now his company was doing good and he was getting a good amount of money so they went on trips to different countries. But then Catherine got sick so he bought her doctors to help her. But then her sickness got bad and Catherine died. After that Milton made Hershey Pennsylvania where his factory is. This months theme is autobiography or biography. I rate this book 5 stars because It tells me all about his and life story. I recommend this book to people who like shorter books and life stories.

This book is about Milton Hershey's life. Milton Hershey was poor as a kid, his parents divorced and Milton decided to live with his mom and started working. He worked for a candy shop and started getting into making candy. When Milton turned nineteen he started his own candy shop, he borrowed money from his aunt and uncle to build the business. His business failed and he moved to Denver Colorado and learned to make candy out of fresh milk. He opened another shop and again failed. He started another business but this time he only made caramels, this was a success. He created factories that branched across the country. Once he got the groove of making candy and stated making chocolate. This was another success, he started getting richer and richer. Then he built a town for all of the workers that worked at the factories to live in. He made schools and even a theme park. Milton is known for making candy but also doing good things with his money.

I gave this a 5 out of 5 stars because it went into good detail with Milton's life before he became famous and also after he became famous. This book was also good because they give specific dates that you could use if you were writing a essay about Milton Hershey you could know all the main dates that took place in his life.

Who Was Milton Hershey is a nonfiction story written by, James Buckley Jr. Growing up million and his family were very poor. They had struggled to get past, and at the same time their farms’ business wasn't going very well. Milton first job working with chocolate was with Royer’s candy in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Soon after that he closes his store in Pennsylvania and moves to Colorado. Then starts the Lancaster Caramel Company. In 1893 the World's Columbian exposition opens in Chicago, Hershey then buys the chocolate-making machines he sees around town. Later in life he goes through a bumpy life, full of goods and bads.

I personally e\really likes this book, i learned and lot about Milton Hershey and his journey for producing chocolate. It was very exciting to see the challenges and accomplishments that he made. It was a great history lesson, but at the same time it didn't even feel like I was reading about history! Can't wait to read the next Who Was book.

If I were to recommend this book, I would recommend it to middle school students. That reason is because this book’s reading level is around middle school levels. People who like history, then this is the book for you. I really liked this book and was a really good book to read! If you read this book, you will fall in love with it just like I did!!

I love Hershey's chocolate and I loved learning about Milton Hershey from this book.
He started out from humble beginnings. He tried, sometimes failed, and tried again until he was successful. He never stopped experimenting and thinking. He loved his wife, spread his wealth, founded a school to help orphan children, built quality towns for his workers, and believed in having fun.
Several facts made my jaw drop.. like how much chocolate the Hershey Chocolate Co. made in a day, how long he kept his chocolate bars the same price (for 60 years, until 1969, they were just a nickle!) And he secretly gave all his stock in the Hershey Chocolate Company to his school in memory of his wife after she died. Today, the Milton Hershey School still owns stock worth more than 9 billion dollars!
A man of excellent character. Great legacy. Great choice for a Who series title.
Now I want to visit Hershey, PA.

Who Was Milton Hershey by James Buckley was a great book. This book was about Milton Hershey and his life of how he became one of worlds best Chocolate maker. Throughout the book it told many of Milton's childhood stories and what had gotten him into the chocolate industry.

I personally really liked this book, in my opinion it was great and interesting. My personal favorite part was when Milton started to become a popular hit for chocolate and started his Hershey town. Overall this was a great book and I really liked it.

I would recommend this book to many people. It was full of events, stories, chocolate and comedy which I was surprised about. Also it was a biography. If you like any of these topics you will love this book. I definitely think you will like this book and recommend it. !!
