Far-off dangers brought to life in my own quiet reading room. The Reef I dove, saw Costa Rica, far from Amazon. Odd from viewpoints of prankish boy and more competent older sibling, makes challenges harder. Too bad out of print, hard to find.

Licensed divers require partners, precautions. I dove the Reef, saw absolutely beyond stunning real fish brighter than movie Finding Nemo characters. Both brothers, and father John, suffer attacks from poisonous creatures, survive without treatment. Only 14 years old, is Roger's title sarcastic? "Doctor Roger Hunt was at his wit's end .. death was possible" p 123, cites cases (real?). Foolish.

Hal is older, 16, 18, depending on book. His younger brother Roger 14 is "scatterbrained" despite promises to be "sensible as a judge" p 397, always pulling stupid stunts that disprove his attempts to appear grownup.

Campers pack more for a weekend here in NA than Amazon trekkers for month(s). Real facts prevail over imaginary. Always a villain. First, Merlin Kraggs, perhaps religious relented double murderer p 53. Second, nicknamed Croc, hires English-speaking thugs somehow in faroff jungle.

Astonishing trivia takes first place. Rarely too much detail. Shark eats eight humans in underwater City, after killed, "the heart keeps on going" p 211. Onto canoe, shrunken head-hunter skull "Charlie .. was merely tied by his hair to a thwart. He had weathered sun, rain and wave while alive and was just as capable of doing so now" p 313.

In this book the Hunt brothers go after animals for their father's collection in the South Seas and in the ominous Amazon Jungle. Through out the trouble of capturing animals like anacondas, octopuses and black panthers, they also encounter old enemies and make some new ones. But through out it all, they rely on themselves and one another to pull through.
