3.5⭐️

This was a cute friends to lovers YA fantasy read with dragons. I usually don’t go for friends to lovers in my books, and the romance definitely felt like it was a sub plot here. It felt to easy. They kiss for the first time (inebriated) and after that they are just kinda together, and saying “love”. It just felt to easy. I like the angst and tension. So I missed that. But there were some cute wholesome quotable moments between the FMC & MMC.
I also wish the dragons didn’t act so.. human. It was kind of hard to distinguish dragon behavior vs human behavior, as they acted the same and talked the same. But I liked all the different kinds of dragons and the dragon magic they came with.
The villain didn’t seem to be completely fleshed out. I wanted a deeper dive into why they were evil. It felt a bit surface level.
I loved that mages got to be that way from stealing a dragon’s magic.
Some scenes felt dragged out and some felt rushed. And some had so many characters involved it was easy to get lost.
All in all I am a guest in the YA genre.. (I’m an adult) so I think my younger self would have loved this. And this book is beautiful! I did like the writing. I would read the second book as the ending was really got me. Definitely my fav part of the book!

I'll quickly pinpoint the best part of this book: the worldbuilding. It's so deep and colorful. Mages who get power by killing dragons. Knights (of any gender) who are trying to save dragons from mages. Dragons of all shapes, sizes, colors, and abilities. This is such a distinct world, different from any I've seen depicted before.

Finley and Evander are such a sweet couple. I love that she's the badass knight-in-training, and he's the nurturing type who cares for dragons. Finley in particular has such a compelling backstory. Secondary characters are well drawn too.

If you're looking for a dragon-rider novel (maybe you just finished "that one book with sprayed edges" and need to scratch the dragon itch it created?), Lady of Dragons by Shelby Elizabeth is worth checking out.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, and this is my honest review.

Okay, how is this book so good? The characters are beautiful pieces of art and I adore spending time with each and every one of them. Especially Finlay and Evander. If they're together, it's even better. What do you get with a spitfire and a cinnamon roll? Sugar and spice and a great adventure, that's what.

The dragons here are so well developed and I adore the mythology and lore created for the world. It gives them much more weight than simply cool creatures. They have history, hierarchy, understanding, communication, bonds...it's a fully crafted culture and I love everything about it. Forrest, in particular, is such a lovable sass of a dragon.

The underlying Shakespearean symbolism is so...so...awesome.

The way this book ends...there is a reason this is part one. I do not yet have part two, which remains very distressing because I must know what happens next!

4.25 ⭐️’s! Thank you to the author, Shelby Elizebeth, for sending me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review!

You know those stories that pull you in and you just want to keep reading?? That was me with this book! I was so invested in the storyline and the characters! I was on the edge of my seat waiting for certain truths to be revealed! 👀

I LOVED the main character, Finlay! She has been through so much and is so strong! She is proof that strength is not only physical and that one can show strength through compassion and kindness! I loved all of the characters in this book! They were very well written and you find yourself getting quickly attached, rooting for them every step of the way!
Not to mention the absolute joy that was Finlay x Evander! Sweet sweet Evander <3 This was such a sweet and gentle romance! Very heartwarming!

I also loved the relationship between Finlay and Meric! With him acting as a fatherly figure/mentor! I wish we got to see a little more of that!

The DRAGONS! The dragons were everything! Their personalities were top notch. It was a breath of fresh air to see the unique take on them and the dragon riders!

I’m excited to learn more about the kingdom and the mages; the societal structure, as well as the motivations! I’m hoping to get more of that and the world/kingdom building in the next book! I think we will as we have been set up for a…change of scenery 👀

This is actually a retelling of Shakespeare’s Mac Beth! I knew this going in and even though I know hardly anything about the play, it did not take away from the experience AT all! I still thoroughly enjoyed it! That being said, if you are a Shakespeare fan I believe you’ll likely have an even better appreciation for this book and catch more of the underlying Shakespeare symbolism the author ingrained in the story!

This is amazing start to what I think is going to be an fantastic duology! I will definitely be tuning in to read the rest of Finlay’s story and cannot WAIT for the next book to come out!

This was a quick and easy little dragon read. The romance is so sweet I feel like I got a cavity from it, and the story was so easy to follow along with. The perfect kind of read in between heavy reads. I loved the dragons and how each one was different in their own way, we see so much pain and emotion from them and it’s refreshing to see dragons actually have their own personalities. This was very HTTYD Race to the edge coded and I was sat. I will absolutely be tuning in to book two and I’m ready to see Evander get his girl back. And I need my boy Jupiter to be okay🥺

Wow! I wasn't sure how I felt about the book in the beginning and I didn't have super high hopes, but I'm glad I underestimated it because I ended up super impressed. The twists at the end had me almost as shook as I was at the end of Fourth Wing. I immediately want to read the next one 🥲

I read this one on Kindle Vella and it was SO SWEET! Evander is such a cinnamon roll and Finley is so determined and loyal. The dragons are awesome, with a special shout out going to Forrest who constantly cracked me up. Tons of swoony lines and underlying Shakespeare vibes, not to mention some very cool magic aspects.Highly recommend!

This is not a full review. I read through the beginning of all 300 SPFBOX contest entries. This was a book I wanted to read more of.

A girl watches her sister train to be a dragon knight, and dreams of being one herself on this YA fantasy that’s off to a fairly competent start.

A trial awaits our MC in the future to seen if she can even qualify to begin training to be a knight like her sister is. What that test is like, we don’t know yet, but it’s clearly a significant obstacle.

The wonder of dragons and the majesty and power of their flight is here, along with a nice, magical touch about the effect of the dragon on the water. Our MC can hardly look away. All her will and all her hopes and dreams are tied up in this.

The prose of this opening is serviceable. The details are nice, but they are not always clearly presented. It creates an effective scene, however, and doesn’t sit still for too long, inviting me to continue turning the pages.

The dialogue also feels slightly awkward and unnatural. It is largely expositional for the moment, and maybe that’s most of the problem. I don’t believe for a second, for instance, that the two girls we’re following haven’t discussed what type of dragon they’d like.

Nonetheless, there is a sunny, bright and breathless whimsy about this story that I’m enjoying. Our MCs character is already apparent to me. She’s a bit pessimistic and thinks too much, but she wants something very badly, and that makes for a great MC.

For the moment, this is a light and engaging read. There’s something fun about it, even wholesome. Will this be about our MC becoming the knight of her dream, or will it take a different turn? I’m interested to find out! I’m in!

New dragon obsession

Finley is a hero. She is independent and brave but struggles with real fear.
Everything she faced and overcame just to end up where she is going.
Shelby Elizabeth wrote a story I didn't want to put down. I can't wait for book two.

Likable characters and an interesting world full of dragons. The writing could use some polishing. The dual pov was often used in a clunky way, with some scenes being described a second time with no new information and identical dialogue.

If you're looking for a sweet friends to lovers romance with dragons, look no further. Finlay and Evander were so cute together (albeit, their romance did feel a little low-stakes, but that's probably the point). The whole plot twist with Finlay's family did feel a little predictable (as well as her big mistake with the phoenix dragon being found out).

3.5 stars/5 (rounded up)
Y’all, this story was so good. This YA Fantasy romance has a sweet love story, beautiful bonds with friends and dragons, action and adventure, but also some mystery to throw in the mix.

Some things I loved:
- the sweet romance between Finlay (FMC) and Evander (MMC) is precious. From friends to lovers we see them grow closer to each other and, with the help of a very nosey but helpful dragon, finally admit their feelings for each and add a new layer to their relationship. There’s a mix of light and heavy kissing/making out and one scene that leads the reader to know what happens but no on page details. Their relationship is more of relishing in each other’s company and protecting one another than an explosive, physical one.

- the dragons are all unique in looks, abilities, and personality and they have such a bond with Finlay and Evander (even the grumpy ones) that I just absolutely love.

- the magic system for dragon knights/riders is through a magic tattoo and they each get once they’ve passed the knight exam/trials and have chosen a dragon. It’s a beautiful moment experienced when reading so I won’t spoil how it works, but I love it.

- I’m a sucker for hidden/unknown identities and mysteries and this book has both and that’s all I’m going to say on that.

What kept me from rating it 5 stars:
There’s nothing inherently wrong with this book but I think it’s the connections to the characters. I am used to reading darker, more detailed fantasy books and those are the ones that tend to linger in my head longer and cause me more emotional turmoil I guess. The longer stories or characters stay in my head, the more likely I am to rate it higher because of it’s reread ability.
There were moments that I would’ve loved to have seen more flushed out and the resolution of some that I would’ve liked to see go a different direction.

You may like this book if you like the following:
🐉 Found family
🐉 Fierce FMC x Cinnamon roll MMC
🐉 Dragon/rider bonds
🐉 Tattoo magic
🐉 Sassy dragon companion
🐉 Swoony but no spice romance

Possible side effects of reading this book may include but isn’t limited to:
- wanting a sassy dragon companion
- dreaming of operating a dragon sanctuary
- an increased desire to fly
- laughing just as much as crying while reading

This is part one that releases 8/29 and the sequel is due out later this year. There are many elements that are mentioned in part one that are surely going to be expanded on later in the series.

Thankful for being gifted an ARC and I look forward to reading the sequel.

This was a very fun, enjoyable read! My heart absolutely melted at the relationship between Finlay and Evander, and I loved the world that was created with so many magical creatures. I knew that this was very loosely based on Shakespeare's Macbeth, so I really enjoyed seeing that come to life, but I was still trying to guess how everything would come together.

Lady of Dragons follows Finlay as she pursues her dream of becoming of Knight, a warrior bound to a dragon, in order to fight against the dragon killing Queen and mages. While scouting with her friend Evander, Finlay accidently prevents a Phoenix dragon from healing itself and the dragon instead binds itself to Finlay. With new powers that must stay hidden and uncovering a horrible secret in her village, Finlay must work with her friends to save dragons from mages and from evil amongst their own ranks.

I really liked the dual point of view of Evander and Finlay, although I probably would have liked a little more Evander. He is a total sweetheart and the love he had for Finlay was palpable. Forrest was one of my favorite characters and I laughed out loud to his reactions whenever Finlay and Evander kissed. I felt bad for him that he is not able to grow like a normal dragon, but he carries on with great humor and is dedicated to his tasks and friends. I wanted to shake Finlay so badly with how quickly she trusts people. Sometimes it turns out ok, although I still have my doubts about certain people, but Alistair?! I don't have a good feeling about him. I also would have liked to learn more about Finlay's new powers and maybe have her try to practice them. She knows she has some powers because Aithne alludes to them, Finlay just doesn't seem to test them or try them out before she needs them. Book one had a good ending and I was glad that certain things concluded, now I'm just anxious about what Finlay will have to do in book two.

I would think this book is perfect for fans of Fourth Wing, with dragon telepathy and magic, and I even felt some How to Train Your Dragon vibes.

Thank you to the author for the ARC! I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Review:

I mostly read this book at work in between calls. I have to tell you that I had a lot of missed feelings about this book. There were times I wanted to put the book down because I just really didn't care for how the story was playing out at all. If it weren't for a couple of dragons and Elsie, I probably would have. That's not saying that the book isn't good. The book was AMAZING! I just didn't care for certain parts. I won't get into the details of those parts as they are major spoilers for the book itself.

I really loved many of the characters. I enjoyed Finlay and her point of view very much. I can't say I agreed with all of her points of view. I really thought that she was reckless and didn't think things through in many cases. I also really saw something coming that happened because of another book I read. I won't say the book because I'm afraid that people will guess and figure out what I'm talking about.

I'm not going to lie. My favorite character of the entire book was Forrest. He was just so quirky and charming. He's a sassy little dragon, but he's so warm hearted and cuddly! I want to get a plushy of him to have and cuddle! Well since I can't have a real him that is. I hope there's more of his wonderful face in part two!

I can honestly say that I really adored the cover. It's beautiful. I didn't really love the ending. I mean it gets the point through. I just feel like it could have been wrapped up a little better. Just certain events. I love that it ended in a way that I want to know what happens next. I meant other things. Things that were explained but not really shown. All in all, I still give it a full five stars and recommend it!

a tale like a hearth fire, kindling with empathy and love and grief and growth - and, of course, dragons! alternating between the POVs of Findlay - our titular lady of the dragons - and Evander, her friend-turned-lover, with a heavier focus on Findlay's, we witness her character evolution like that of fire - fire has the ability to destroy, but also to transform, and this precisely parallels how the awakening of fire magic within her by becoming bonded to a phoenix dragon changed her; the fire that destroyed her family is the same fire that can give birth to a new her, one stronger, burning with the warmth and resilience of fire.

although this is a fantasy romance, i'd say the romance took a backseat to the fantasy elements, but it's not really secondary to it, being important, just like the super supportive cast of characters of friends and (found) family (including the dragons!) around Findlay, in nurturing her, keeping her grounded and stoking her strength in the face of adversities.

the dragons are also full of personality, and their being able to speak directly into people's minds fosters closeness and empathy we see why Findlay and the other guardians like her so fiercely want to protect the dragons from the Mages that try to hunt them to siphon their powers.

while i felt that the worldbuilding could have been more expansive -- more dragon lore, more Mage lore, more of the world outside the sanctuary -- the ending left me feeling like the sequel will have the potential to add to this and be more action-packed.

overall, a heartwarming character-driven first book of hope and strength

Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC of this book for an honest review.

I thought this book to be incredible. The emotional depth of the characters and the love relationship of Finley and Evander is like nothing I’ve seen in a really long time. It was so refreshing. The vulnerability with the characters and gentleness made me root and like all of the characters. I absolutely loved all the dragons and each of their personalities. Though the story is more simple than other books like Fourth Wing-I’m sorry-this is so much better! It did something that Fourth Wing couldn’t no matter how hard: it showed real healthy love, strong relationships, like able characters, and characters that embody many emotions we feel. The ending is heart breaking and I can’t wait to read part 2. This book needs more love and this is what I’m after with a fantasy book. I loved how the story built, that the characters had vulnerability and fears such as the main character-but even with that-she has this strength that is gentle but powerful.

I encourage more readers to read this book! As I said before and I’ll say it again…this is better than Fourth Wing. If you are looking for fantasy and want to see what true relationships look like whether platonic or romantic, please take a chance on this book. The emotional depth is stronger than ever. I feel like I could relate this to life in general and the quiet strength we have. Strength doesn’t have to be overpowering, strength can be kind.

I’ll leave you with this quote from Evander, “Acceptance doesn’t mean perfection. It means growth.”

Beautifully said! Shout out to the author Shelby Elizabeth.

Now, I’m off to part two. See you at the comment section!

Lady of Dragons is a fun YA fantasy read with nosey and snarky dragons, cinnamon roll leads, magic, mages, and adventure.

This book was a joy to read! The overall tone/mood of the book brought me back to reading Eragon and Narnia when I was younger. It was a childlike joy and sense of wonder that enveloped me while reading. The world and adventure was also very colorful—the descriptions are vibrant and present such a magical world.

I especially loved Forrest who is a Forest dragon that directly calls out the one who named him for his lack of originality. I also loved that we get a female character who’s a knight with the male character taking on more of a nurturing role and caretaker. It’s something you don’t see very often and it was refreshing.

This book is for those who enjoy:
Friends to Lovers romance (no spice)
Magic
YA fantasy
Cinnamon Roll love interest
Dragons (all sizes, types & magical abilities)
Knights
Shakespeare undertones (this is a Macbeth retelling)

Thank you to RRbooktours and the author for the arc and allowing me the chance to read and review this book!

I was so excited to get to read an ARC of LADY OF DRAGONS, a neat YA Fantasy and first in a new series by Shelby Elizabeth. The world building is so nicely done here, with Finlay as the likeable plucky MC, an orphan who is training to be a knight who fights with dragons. In this world there are also dark mages who kill dragons in order to take their power, something Finlay’s tribe fights against. Evander is one of the other main characters and the love interest, and I loved his role in the book as the dragon keeper, as well as all the varied personalities of the dragons in the story. So rich and detailed! There’s a lot of discontent and trouble brewing in the story and you never quite know who you can trust. Finlay forms a special bond with several dragons, in different ways, and I liked how she always stayed true to herself even in the face of new information that is revealed throughout the course of the book. I loved all the characters in this one and really look forward to book 2!

Lady of Dragons is a young adult, friends to lovers, fantasy book with dragons! I mean what else needs to be said! In all seriousness though, our story centers around Finlay, a young woman that is desperate to become a dragon knight, and Evander, her best friend and the keeper of the dragon sanctuary. After things go horribly wrong during a scouting expedition, Finlay is left with choices that can have devastating consequences for her everyone.

I loved Finaly and Evander, both as individual characters, and as a budding couple. Finlay is the definition of fierce kindness and compassion while Evander is honey sweet. The two of them together is just *chef's kiss* The side characters and their respective relationships were also very well done, such as Meric and Forrest. The world building is so immersive and all the in-world lore makes sense. This book will pull your heart strings and leave you wanting more. I can't wait for part two!

Finlay wants to protect the dragons. They’re beautiful and majestic and kind. But a mistake and betrayal could cost her this dream.
Everything weighs on the choices she makes based on a fragmented vision. Is it the right choice?

If you are in love with dragons, this is the book for you. Shelby Elizabeth has done a fantastic job creating this world. There are so many different types of dragons - shadow dragons, weather dragons, healing dragons - that it will make the dragon lover inside feel giddy.

She also does an excellent job melding character backstory with the present plot. This is not something that can be said about everyone, let me assure you!

The fighting scenes are the kind of intense that make your eyes want to slip down the page to see what happens. Trust me, this happened to me multiple times 😂

And the romance is sweet and touching. Your heart will fill with warmth.

I don’t want to give away anything for the book, but dragon lovers should definitely check it out. It reminded me why I love dragons ❤️

Ugh I LOVED this book
It had the atmosphere of How to Train Your Dragon but the dragon bond/magic system kind of similar to Fourth Wing- and it was so comfy but also so interesting.

The less you know going in, the better.
Just know we have dragon riding, dragons bonds, sassy dragons, friends to lovers (no spice but super cute), found family, action, adventure, a bit of trials, twists, secrets, interesting world (with good world building), interesting magic system, political intrigue- please just give it a try- I was sucked in almost immediately.

(The only reason it was not a 5 star read for me was that some parts were lacking a bit- like a lot of build up to something but then it is glossed over in one sentence (trying not to spoil). I wanted more I guess- it was easy to read with less descriptors in places, but I was so engrossed in this world I wanted it to last longer and have more.)

I love this book so much!

Evander's petname is to die for. I love him so much. He is so adorable. I love Meric too. Such a great surrogate father even if you don't see much of him. Forrest is such a funny Sassy lovely dragon. I love so many people who are close to her.

The story was beautifully written. The characters are full of life and seem very real and act accordingly. The topic with the dragon riders would also be implemented very well and is very exciting.
There is also a real culture and history about the dragons. A stunningly great story. Thrilling, ravishing, exciting, tearful and lovable.
And the ending of book one is frustrating. Well frustrating. Absolutely to suggest. I will definitely read the second volume as well. Once it's out... 😢

“You have a spark, a radiance, nothing in the world can put out. And, love—you’ve burned your way into my very soul.”

🥹 I adored this book. It gave me a lot of YA How To Train Your Dragon vibes and it was wonderful! I devoured every page and left no crumbs!

Finlay is such a sweet, courageous, and hopeful FMC and the way she interacts with the dragons is so special. She has such a big heart filled with so much passion and empathy for others and I really enjoyed reading about her. She is also unafraid to stand up for herself and others, and I admire her so much for that! Also, Forrest is the cutest little dragon ever and I love his attitude haha, couldn't get enough of him!🥰🐲

Read if you like:
• YA Fantasy
• Sassy dragon companions
• A sweet, adorable love interest
• Forbidden magic
• Mages vs. Dragon Riders

I quite enjoyed this read about Dragons and our MC Finlay and MMC Evandar. The writing was very engaging for the readers and it really pulls you into the story.

Finlay wants to be a knight but she really loves Dragons and...has a thing for Evandar the 🔥 dragon watcher and keeper in the sanctuary.

The world the author created was so descriptive and imaginative that I mean 😮. The dragons being able to 'talk' to people is so cool, and the bonding with a dragon thing, I mean who wouldn't want that?

I had no idea until I read further into the book that it was basically a re-telling of Macbeth with Dragons! That is so awesome!😍

I can not wait to find out what happens in the next book and see what the future holds in store for Finlay, Evandar, and the Dragons, because that ending 😮, it leaves you wondering but in a good way!

I have followed this author on social media for a while. I have been so excited to read this book and unfortunately, I was disappointed.
I’ve heard this book marketed as clean fiction plus after reading it seems to be geared towards younger teenagers. So needless to say when the random sex scene came about, I was shocked. It’s not on page, but for a book marketed as clean, I felt it was very out of place.
Like I said, I followed the author for years and I never heard the book marketed towards children, but for me, that’s how it came across. It read like lower middle grade.
So I don’t think marketing the book as the Hunger Games meets Fourth Wing was exactly a good move.
Another thing that drove me crazy was again the marketing. The authors marketing for this book is friends to lovers. Childhood friends lovers at that, but we got no pining, it was unclear to me if they even liked each other and why. We got no real backstory, to me the relationship had no buildup and it felt just sprung on you. She may come back to that and build more in the second book, but for me it was too fast. One second they are friends, if you can even call at that, because the author just tells us their friends she never shows us that they are.
Then in the next scene they’re making out, the scene after that they’re having sex on the floor. The relationship was just bizarre. Another thing that bothered me was the first kiss; they were both drunk, which gave me the ick majorly, there was no reliable consent and again if this is for teens/tweens, why are we drinking? What example is that?
For me, it was just the whiplash of reading this story one second there’s like a tiny cartoony dragon that they’re talking to making it feel like a childish then legitimately one scene later they’re by the fire drinking bourbon and making out it didn’t feel like a cohesive story at all.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Overall I enjoyed this story! It’s fast paced, the main character is a tender-hearted and brave young heroine, and I appreciated the cast of supporting characters in her story. Forrest, especially, was quite a funny little wingman dragon!

I’d have liked to see a lot more world-building and plot development, but maybe that’s coming in Part Two! The ending was certainly unexpected and leaves the reader anxious for the next part to continue the story and discover Finley’s ultimate fate.

If you like fast-paced stories with dragons and sweet romance, this is the one for you!

Thank you Shelby Elizabeth! I received an ARC copy and in exchange for an honest review.

The book is very fast paced! The characters are very likeable, and the romance is more on the cute and sweet side. Let me start by saying, I have a soft spot for anything involving dragons. The dragons are playful, funny, and keep you wanting more interactions with them.

While I appreciate the fast pace of the book, there were some parts that I felt were rushed and could’ve been further developed. However, I’m hoping that these things are explained further in book 2!

The ending definitely left you wondering, and I’m very excited to see what is in store for Finlay and Evander!

Lady of Dragons is a “fantasy romance with a strong heroine, sweet love interest, sassy dragon companion, and more than a dash of adventure.” This was definitely a sweet little romance that feels like a good start for a fun story!

The friends-to-lovers romance is very sweet, and I do like Finlay, our feisty MC, and Evander, our cinnamon roll love interest, together. For me personally, I would have just liked things to build up between them a little more. Even with them beginning as friends, it just felt a little fast, but I do love a slow burn. That being said, they still broke my heart a little at the end 🥲

I would have liked to see more of a plot for part one. It feels more like a series of events that needed to take place for the plot of part two. There’s a lot being set up (and the things being set up are interesting), I just wish it felt a little smoother. However, the world is interesting and unique. I loooved all the dragons and how big a part they played throughout the story. It’s definitely one of the funnest portrayals of dragons I’ve seen!

Thank you to @shelbyelizabethbooks for the ARC! I can’t wait to see where Part Two takes us 👀 Lady of Dragons: Part One is available now on Amazon 🎉

This book was so magical and so unlike anything I have read recently. It was so immersive, so fun and had such a unique feel to it. Finlay is my favorite kind of character; strong, funny, passionate and brave. This story really tapped into my love for all things fantasy and magical creatures. I loved reading about all the different types of dragons and their powers, the world they live in, and the sweet friends-to-lovers romance gave the book a very cute vibe. Overall I thought this book was adorable and whimsical and just an amazing read!
