The Bible makes it clear no one knows the day or the hour of Christ's return. But it doesn't say we won't know the month. Or the week.
When every Christian on Earth simultaneously receives a message that Christ will return sometime in the coming week, the world is thrown into stark panic. Two old friends, hardened combat veterans from the closing days of the Vietnam War, set out on a suspenseful quest to redeem that time.
What they can't know is they and their entire church have been targeted for satanic annihilation.
NOTE: This is a re-titled and completely updated version of my novel, Heading Home
John Robinson has been writing professionally for over a decade, with five novels commercially published. These include Until the Last Dog Dies, When Skylarks Fall, and To Skin a Cat, all through David C. Cook/RiverOak Publishing; Heading Home, Sheaf House Publishers; and The Radiance, Musa Publishing. John is also a member of the Authors Guild, and for three years was on faculty at a nationally ranked writers conference held near Santa Fe. There he taught tracks on plotting, theme, dialogue, and character development.
John has a background in broadcasting and journalism, and so he is very comfortable in dealing with all aspects of the media. He also has an active on-line presence, which includes moderating a large writers website, as well as enjoying a stint as a regular columnist on the blog, Author Culture. In addition, John is a member of such diverse sites as AbsoluteWrite, deCompose, and James Lileks’ blog, who is a popular columnist for the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. Finally, John is close friends with his mentor, writer James Scott Bell, author of the popular Plot and Structure, published by Writers Digest Books.
Last Call by John Robinson is a tale of friendship and doing what’s right. The rapture is coming, are you ready? If you knew you had a week, what would you do? Two old friends and veterans from the Vietnam War make that choice and decide what they are going to do with their last week.
To be honest, I was nervous when I started getting into this book as I am not a huge fan of war stories, especially the Vietnam War, but once we skipped ahead 40 years, I was sucked in. I love the bond of friendship that's made when people go through difficult situations together, even after not seeing each other for so long.
There is a lot packed into this story, maybe a little too much at times, but it flowed well and felt mostly realistic. Heart-warming and heart-wrenching at times with an interesting take on The Rapture.
The story was fine. It had some parts that kept me going. One thing that really gets in my way, while reading a book, are editing issues. This book had plenty.
During a church service, God gives believers a heads up that the rapture will be taking place within a week, so two Army buddies head out to try to find the friends they had served in Vietnam with to make sure that they are right with God. Although this book posits a pre-trib rapture (one I don't agree with), I loved the way the story is told and I absolutely loved the characters. I enjoyed reading this one.
Note: This book was previously titled, "Heading Home".
Last Call by John Robinson poses the question: if God made it known to His people that Christ's return would be sometime in the next week (no one knows the "day or hour" - but what about the week?), how would we use those final days? Follow a couple of Vietnam war vets as they attempt to bring their buddies "home" in an eternal way. I found the book riveting, stirring and encouraging. The characters were believable to me - as opposed to other "end times" novels I've read. The descriptions of war-zone missions recalled by the veterans in flashbacks are not for the faint of heart, as they are vividly portrayed. But that just lends to the "authenticity," if you will, of the novel. I'd recommend it as inspirational reading for Christians especially.
Spoiler: this is a pre-tribulation rapture work
