And on the lake, a wooden rowboat floats loose. She shouldn’t intrude, but Sadie thinks again of the woman’s ‘I need to find my family. Will you help me?’

Sadie Forest had left her home in Rivers End after a particularly bad fight with her father. She was eighteen when she fled to Sydney and in the fifteen years since then, she'd carved out a successful career, always missing her mother Pam, but not receiving any replies to her constant emails. Now, with Sadie's father dead, she was back in Rivers End to help her mother with their aging Inn, work to bring the old home back up to scratch, then she'd return to Sydney. Her meeting with Rebecca, a reclusive woman living in a beautiful cottage overlooking Whisper Lake, set her investigative antennae jangling. Because Rebecca had wandered off, and her neighbour, construction company boss, Dan, helped Sadie search for Rebecca.

Sixty two years prior, Becky, her father and younger brother Charlie had moved to a little beachside town after their mother and wife had died, hoping for a new start. Charlie was only seven, while Becky was twelve, and the bullies who tormented both Charlie and Becky, drove her to anger. Charlie's friend Tim was his champion - but when tragedy struck, everyone's life changed forever...

The Cottage at Whisper Lake is the first in the Temple River series by Aussie author Phillipa Nefri Clark and I loved it, flying through, unable to put it down until I'd finished. Ms Clark is a very versatile and prolific author, with many genres to her name. Up there among my favourite authors, I'm looking forward to #2 already, and recommend The Cottage at Whisper Lake highly.

With thanks to NetGalley, Storm Publishing and the author for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

The start of a new series by this prolific author. She is writing them faster than I can read them!

Sadie returns to her hometown to help her mother after the death of her father. She meets Rebecca, an older lady, who in a moment of confusion asks Sadie to help her find someone. Later she takes this back but the journalist in Sadie is alerted and she begins to seek for the answer to this mystery.

As the story progresses we see episodes from Rebecca's past, we meet many interesting characters from the town, and Sadie is begins to discover new things about her mother and herself. She also begins a very promising romance.

This is a very enjoyable and entertaining book. There are teary moments but it builds to a very satisfactory conclusion. I look forward to continuing this series in the future.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

One Liner: Heartwarming

Sadie Forest is back in River End after fifteen years. She wouldn’t have been here if not for her mother’s call to sort out the family business and house after her father’s death. Back in the town, Sadie feels familiar yet different. She is still haunted by the bittersweet and painful memories of her childhood.

One day, Sadie chances upon a lovely cottage near Whisper Lake. She also meets the reclusive owner, Rebecca Meyers. The old lady is intriguing and has a troubled past of her own. When she asks for help, Sadie knows she will do what she can. Maybe this could be her chance to finally lay her demons to rest.

Of course, there’s Dan, the builder, a handsome and kind man liked by many. Sadie needs to make a lot of decisions!

The story comes in the third-person POV of Sadie Forest and the first-person POV of young Becky (past timeline).

My Thoughts:

This is an Australian small-town book set around the fictitious Temple River, in the coastal Victoria state. The setting is beautiful, with cliffs, jetty, lake, hill slopes, and open lands. Though there isn’t much about the town, we get to see a few local stores and briefly meet their owners.

Sadie is a documentary producer who tackles serious topics like the impact of finances on seniors, etc. Though she claims to have gotten over her past issues with her father, we see that’s not the case. All those years of therapy didn’t help for sure.

It takes a while to get used to the interactions between Sadie and her mother, Pam. That’s because Sadie hasn’t really kept in touch with her. Both women have changed, and this makes things a bit tentative. I like how they continue to support each other despite the uncertainty. Their relationship strengthens as they start to heal.

Sadie is easy enough to like, though she willingly does/ says a few things that put her in a not-so-good light. The narrative keeps things clear, so it is easy to see her thoughts and the reason for her actions, even if we don’t always agree with them.

Rebecca, aka Becky, is another complex character. Her older self is different yet the same as her younger version. I admit to being confused about her age in the past timeline. The first-person narrative doesn’t reveal her age (we get a clue after a couple of chapters) for a long time. And given how Becky is literally cooking and cleaning like a grownup, I had a little tough time trying to picture her age. (Thanks for your help when I tried to figure it out, Rosh.)

The book is heavy on emotions, acceptance, forgiveness, and healing. While this doesn’t make it a light read, it also doesn’t get too overwhelming. We get some lighter and gentler moments, too. Percy, the black cat, helps a lot. Little Charles, too, is an adorable young boy.

The love track between Sadie and Dan is well done. It’s there but not too evident. The connection feels realistic enough, mainly because Dan is composed, assertive, and stable. He has already healed himself, so he is patient with Sadie as she tries to sort through her issues. And this is a clean romance.

A crucial element relies on a minor character we aren’t familiar with. This makes it hard to understand their motivations and actions. It’s almost like we need to accept certain things at face value and go with the flow. I wish this was better handled.

However, Sadie’s inquisitive nature plays a role in connecting the dots. We do see a hopeful ending (or a new beginning) for the main characters. There isn’t an epilogue, but we have an HFN. Since this is a standalone series, I’m hopeful Sadie and Dan will be recurring characters.

To summarize, The Cottage at Whisper Lake is a heartwarming story on the heavier side. It deals with various themes, though they are all centered around family and relationships.

Thank you, NetGalley and Storm Publishing, for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

What a story, truly I finished this one last night and I am writing the review this morning and I am still teary as I type, again Phillipa Nefri Clark has taken us back to the wonderful town of River’s End and introduced us to wonderful characters, the emotions flow in this one and you will need tissues when you read this awesome duel timeline, this is one not to be missed, come along and meet Sadie and Rebecca.

Sadie Forest has returned home to River’s End, she ran eighteen years ago when things got too hard to stay with her father, but now her father has died and it is time to return to her mother, Pam and help settle things with the family business, she should be here for only a couple of weeks, that was her thoughts until she meets Rebecca a neighbour of her mother's.

The town has changed and when on a walk she is greeted by a cat and a cottage by a lake, with a bike out the front and no one home Sadie is worried and soon is meeting Dan who runs a building business and they are out searching for the owner of the home.

Rebecca Myers moved to River’s End three years ago trying to find closure on what happened to her family sixty two years ago, when she was twelve years old something is drawing her to the beach, will she ever be able to find the peace she needs?

When Rebecca and Sadie meet on the bench, Rebecca asks for help to find them and with Sadie’s journalistic skills and her empathy and the need she has to help, she will never give up until she gets to the bottom of the mystery, along the way Rebecca and Sadie become very close, two people who are empathetic, loving and caring.

This is a story that it heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time, it is so beautifully written, emotions run high and I loved Sadie and Rebecca, will they both find the peace that they need, will Sadie stay in River’s End and go into the future with a weight lifted from her shoulders and find the happiness she deserves? And will Rebecca find answers to the questions she has and find her peace?

I loved this one so very much and I do highly recommend it, I loved being back in River’s End and I am really looking forward to more in this series, you made me cry Phillipa Nefri Clark always a good sign for a great story, one for the keeper shelf.

My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for my digital copy to read and review.

The Cottage at Whisper Lake is book one in the Temple River series by Phillipa Nefri Clark. Sadie Forest came home to Rivers End to see her mother after the death of her father and found her mother not coping. So she walked along the lake, thinking about her mother and family's Inn; she came across a beautiful cottage and cat, but not the house owner. Sadie contacted her mother, who made her realize an older woman called Rebecca was missing. Daniel Harrington, Rebecca's neighbour, soon arrives to help Sadie. However, neither Daniel Harrington nor Sadie Forest realized this meeting would forever change their lives. The readers of The Cottage at Whisper Lake will continue to follow Sadie Forest and Daniel Harrington to discover what happens.

The Cottage at Whisper Lake is an excellent start to the new series by Philipa Nefri Clark. I engaged with the story and the characters from the first page. I like how Phiipa Nefri Clark incorporates social issues affecting the community in her books. I love Philipa Nefri Clark's portrayal of her characters and how they intertwine throughout this book. The Cottage at Whisper Lake is well-written and researched by Philip Nefri Clark. I like Philip Nefri Clark's description of the settings of The Cottage at Whisper Lake, which e complemented the book's plot.

The readers of The Cottage at Whisper Lake will learn about making documentaries. Also, the readers of The Cottage at Whisper Lake will understand the consequences of child abuse.

I recommend this book.

*Discoveries & Revelations*

I absolutely loved this book, I was swept away by this story of love, revelations, discoveries, lies and the impact on lives left behind to continue. There are some heartbreaking moments that broke my heart. It is also the start of the Temple River Series, book two is to come. The book is told via two points of view of Sadie and Rebecca, two women that on the surface are very different but can they find some common ground?

The story is set in Australia and the main character Sadie is a journalist who had a volatile relationship with her father so she left home and never looked back. Now for the first time in 15 years she returns home to help support her mother with her overbearing and controlling father’s passing. Sadie makes documentaries and this visit is just for a few weeks as far as she is concerned, her job is extremely busy and in her head she cannot wait to get home.

On one of her travels around the area she meets an elderly woman Rebecca who is very private but something about her pulls Sadie in. She feels a connection to her and she is taken aback when Rebecca meekly asks for help to find her family. But Rebecca is reluctant to talk and Sadie starts to dig around.

What we discover is a heartbreaking account of Rebecca’s life and as Sadie tries to delicately pull the pieces together she makes a discovery of her own about her own life and prioritises, she also has to confront her own past relationship with her father, unable to confront him is there an Avenue for her to be at peace?….

3.5 stars rounded up. Warm cozy mystery, slow to get going for me, did finally grab me and ends with a nice warm hug and a few surprises. Can’t wait to see the next in the series and thankful to Netgalley and Dreamscape elect for my advanced audio copy in exchange for my honest review. Narration was great, easy to follow, alternating timelines from present to 62 years ago, ties together well and didn’t have any trouble following.

Keep your tissue box handy for when you read The Cottage At Whisper Lake by Phillipa Nefri Clark as it won't disappoint. With love, loss and many things in between you won't want to put the book down until you've turned the very last page.

Sadie Forest has returned home to Rivers End to see her Mum Pam and try to re-establish their relationship after the passing of her father and her absence for many years.

Meanwhile Rebecca relives her life as a young Becky with glimpses of her childhood emerging into specific times in her current life.

Sadie and Rebecca have an instant connection and Sadie's journalistic instinct kicks in with the need to help Rebecca to find peace with parts of her life that keep coming up and haunting her.

The story wouldn't be complete without a little bit of a spark emerging for Sadie when she meets Dan a developer who is involved in both Pam and Rebecca's live too.

Could Sadie finally let go of her demons and come home to Rivers End to live?

Thanks to Phillipa Nefri Clark for writing this story and NetGalley for allowing me to read and review an advanced copy.

The Cottage at Whisper Lake is such a heartfelt book. Truly shows you how a situation can look so different to each person involved. You never truly know what it’s like to be that other person, even when they are family. And that sometimes it’s not too late to change the way things are.

Thank you Phillipa for gifting us a copy to read and review.
What goes on behind closed doors and the secrets that stay within the walls are part of every house, as they accomodate different families and their secrets through the time.
A dual time line emotional narrative that hones in on family relationships, deception, redemption and a touch of mystery.
Sadie returns to her hometown of Rivers End after a long while being away.
Her mother is adjusting to life as a widow, after many years of marital suppression and mental abuse.
Memories of her distant and tyrannical father still haunting her.
A solitary but beautiful cottage on the edge of the river and the mysterious woman who lives there, intrigues Sadie.
Her journalistic eye detects a story and delves into a fact finding mission.
Rebecca needs closure and her past connects the timelines.
Sixty two years ago Becky and her family moved to the town after the death of her mother.
A disabled brother, a mean spirited and resolute Aunt and a series of events culminate badly for Becky.
This is a beautifully written story and I’m always amazed when an author writes multiple genres extremely well.
The vivid landscape, the complexity of familial issues and a mystery woven in so well all make this an awesome reading experience.

The Cottage at Whisper Lake is the first book in the Temple River series and I can already tell it’s going to be a fabulous series. Aussie author Phillipa Nefri Clark writes beautifully, and her descriptions are so detailed that, as a reader, you can easily visualise the area.

The plot is so well created that I didn’t want to put the book down, and I just had to know what was going to happen next. With thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for my digital copy to read and review.

It’s been a while since I’ve read another book by this author and even though this is entirely different to Last Known Contact which is a crime book, the writing is excellent.

Usually dual timelines are found in historical fiction but with The Cottage at Whisper Lake, this involves looking back at the past and what eventually leads to present which was fascinating. I loved the characters of Sadie, who should have been an investigative journalist, Pam her long suffering mother and of course Rebecca who has lived her adult life with regret for what happened in her childhood.

The story slowly built up and developed which kept me turning the pages until its conclusion which had an unexpected ending - I do like it when books surprise you!

Such a talented writer who can turn her hand to multiple genres, this is great women’s fiction and I highly recommend it to readers who enjoy dual timeline, family stories with a mystery involved plus a touch of romance. Looking forward to reading book #2 in this series.

This book drew me in from the very beginning. I was so immersed that I had to put aside my own writing this morning to finish the story. The dual timeline was layered, with both stories unravelling a tiny bit with each chapter. The setting was richly described and the characters well-rounded, raw and real. Bravo Phillipa Nefri Clark!

Wow, Phillipa Nefri Clark did it again! I decided to read her other books after reading (and loving) her new book The Bookstore at Rivers End that I received as a NetGalley ARC.
This book, her first in the Temple River Series, is just as good. Set in Australia, a daughter returns home to her widowed mother after being out of the area to pursue her career. Upon returning home, Sadie finds many surprises that turn into mysteries she feels compelled to solve, including holes in her own life needing to be reconciled. The mystery, suspense, and honesty of the character interactions completely drew me into this story. I even found myself crying at one point. I think I'm an official fan of this author.

When the past meets the present. If you are looking for a good mystery, and some romance this book is for you. Sadie, a journalist returns home to Whisper Lake after fifteen years to be with her mother after the passing of Sadie’s father. She’s trying to heal after her estrangement from her parents. Will she be able to let go of the past? Can her and her mother get close again? Time to make changes. Sadie meets a neighbor named Rebecca, and she’s intrigued. Sadie knows there’s a story to be had. Will she get it, especially when Rebecca ask her to help find her family.? Is Rebecca having a moment or is she really looking for someone? Sadie also meets Dan, a very handsome contractor who is friends with her mother and Rebecca. Sadie isn’t looking for romance. She’s looking for her next documentary. Between Rebecca, her mother and Dan, Sadie is really enjoying being there at Whisper Lake. What’s not to love? It’s so tranquil, peaceful and has lots of memories. Even good ones. Now it’s time for Sadie to figure out what she really wants to do in her life. Will she stay and be with her mother? Will they become close? Will she discover Rebecca’s horrible secrets? What will happen between Dan and Sadie? The characters all need to heal, trust, love and let go of the past. Wonderful characters. This is a wonderful book. Worth the read. Phillipa Nefri Clark makes you feel like your in the story. I couldn’t put it down. I received this book for my honest review. I gave it voluntarily

The Cottage at Whisper Lake is an incredibly fascinating mystery story that kept me up to the wee hours of the morning reading it. This novel is filled with intriguing clues, numerous secrets and lovely descriptions of a haunting and scenic Australian location. The alluring plot held my interest and with the two timelines I was able to get the backstory of Rebecca or at least a glimpse of her past life and the heartaches she experienced. Then we see in the current day how much those events affected her long term. And yes, Ms Clark really winds up the tension and it’s an emotional roller coaster ride through this woman’s life. Pacing is a thoughtful meander, not rushed or too slow. It unfolds like a flower—a rose with its thorns that can lift you up in excitement one minute, then prick you and leave you in a puddle of tears. This story resonates with authentic pain and, as a result, draws out the empathy from our hearts as we care about Rebecca and hope she is going to be okay. And Sadie, too.

Our major character, Sadie Forest, has a passion for helping the unfortunate and aged, she is drawn to Rebecca and the mystery that surrounds her. Maybe it is her journalist senses that keeps her interest on high alert but events begin to happen once she accidentally meets Rebecca through a strange way. They become friends: the older woman and the younger. When Rebecca briefly lets down her guard while lost in her memories and during a glimmer of grief, she asks Sadie to help her find someone. But before saying a name, she pulls back. Sadie wonders: who is she trying to locate? Over the days, bits of truth unveil, while Sadie’s curiosity increases. She needs to know the story behind the sad eyes, the wandering behaviour and even the cat named Percy.

As painful circumstances unfold in the past timeline, the answers are revealed in the present. But not without extensive research and numerous roadblocks, does Sadie discover the truth. And it is not just about Rebecca. Our reporter protagonist makes known her own family heartache and soiled memories. Her father has died but his presence lingers in the legacies he has left behind. Their relationship was a difficult one and it has left emotional scars. It caused her to leave home fifteen years earlier and never look back. But now she returns to help her grieving mother who is struggling with the family business. As unfortunate as circumstances are, Sadie feels her mother is free now from the man who dominated and controlled every aspect of her life. She tries to help her mother have some fun: do things she was not allowed to do before. There are some conflicting emotional responses during this time.

And in the midst of it all she meets a builder who is friends with both her mother and Rebecca. Sadie and Dan come together when Rebecca goes missing. He is nothing like she expects (nor his home) and she gets pleasantly surprised by his generous heart and her rising feelings towards him. Is there an unexpected romance on the horizon?

Perspective is a big part of this story. Some people speak of Sadie’s father ‘as if he was a different man from the one she remembered..’ As Rebecca noted: he was ‘a little possessive perhaps, but love was evident.’ This confuses Sadie as what she remembers is a very different picture. Was her father different at the end of his life than when she was at home? By staying away, did she miss some vital changes?

Sadie and Rebecca have an unusual kinship. They carry their heart-breaking memories close but have touched ‘deep seated pain in each other.’ As Rebecca states, everyone experiences some tragedy in their lives. But the differences are in how they handle it. Some people are able to put it behind them while others ‘with the gift and curse of empathy—are never the same.’ To the onlooker, people like Sadie and Rebecca may seem ‘strong and industrious’ and not show signs of struggle within. But it is this struggle that fuels their actions—the power behind the purpose of everything they do. This may seem like a bleak thought but it is profound and clearly observant. This is one of many deep truths in this novel—especially in the psychological aspects of the characters. And as we know from the historical thread, some terrible things happen to Rebecca by a family member that are so awful, the scars run deep.

I can say without giving anything away, there is a happy ending. Sadie finds her ‘home’ and where she belongs. It is quite different from what she expected. Going home can shake one’s foundation. But love can sweep in and smash those self-made walls to allow light and healing into the bruised and broken areas. Rebecca gets a surprise, too, that will alter her last years.

This is an amazing story I highly recommend. Yes, your heart will be knocked around a bit and tears may ease down your cheeks but it is worth it to get to the pages of hope and restoration. Like Sadie you may might run to the ‘hollowed tree of your childhood’ and give in to the grief but later you will look up at the sky and see ‘a shrine of a trillion stars.’

Dan recognises in Sadie her deep compassion and empathy. This is something that resounds through this novel over and over. Sadie definitely takes on ‘the pain of those who matter to her…And their joy.’ Rebecca shares this ability, too. And The Cottage at Whisper Lake holds many secrets that unlock the mystery. Sadie gets her answers and during her journey home she also finds her place. This novel carries a strong message that we should never waste time or opportunities. Mermaids and stars. Hope and expectations. Seize the day. And read this profound novel. 5 Stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

After wrapping up her newest documentary, journalist Sadie Forest decides that after 15 years, it's time to visit home. As she dives into helping her widowed mother run the family inn, she finds herself immersed in the memories of her childhood, not all of which are good.  The main reason for her staying away from home so long? Her father. Now that he has passed she is forced to reconcile her feelings towards her overbearing, controlling father, as she tries to understand her mother's grief.

One day Sadie stumbles upon an empty cottage while on a run. After its persistent feline resident insists on her entering, she starts to worry for the seemingly elderly owner. Teaming up with the closest neighbour she helps locate 75-year-old Rebecca, miles away from home.  When Rebecca asks for Sadie's help, she makes a promise to Rebecca, and herself, to help however she can.

Switching from the present to the past, we follow Sadie as she tries to unravel the mystery of Rebecca's history, not an easy task when the stubborn older woman refuses to speak more on the subject. And we get a glimpse into 12-year-old Rebecca's (Becky's) life as she starts over in a new town with her beloved father and younger brother.

This was a beautiful and heartwarming book. The characters were well written and I was a puddle of tears towards the end. I'll be checking out the other novels by this author and I look forward to reading the next book in the series!

Really enjoyed this book, it’s the 4th book of the Temple River series and is about friendship, misunderstanding, finding and a little bit of mystery thrown in. The story is about Joanna and her friendship with Roslyn. Joanna has been away from Willow Bay for years when she receives a letter that draws her back there where she begins to try and solve the mystery that made her leave, she meets her first love again and comes face to face with her friend Roslyn who was also the other part of the reason she left. Will the mystery be solved ? And can lost friendship and love be reunited ?

A wonderful start to the Temple River series. This book combines romance, mystery, and suspense with a heartfelt story about coming home and healing old wounds. The setting of coastal Victoria is beautifully drawn, and the characters feel authentic and compelling.
The author has a way of bringing characters to life that you feel like you know them. Sadie is one of those characters.
Sadie’s journey is one of rediscovery and connection, and the decades-old mystery adds a gripping layer to the narrative. It's about healing the past and creating a future. A real page-turner that had me hooked all the way through.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

A sweet story about two women who come together to find peace in each other lives.
Rebecca's story goes back 62 years ago while she lived with her Dad and younger brother until she left. Sadie comes home to help her mother run and repair the family Inn only to find how much she really missed her home town.

It's a great story, a pinch of romance.

"The Cottage at Whisper Lake" by Phillipa Nefri Clark is a poignant exploration of family secrets, homecoming, and the arduous journey of making peace with the past. Set against the picturesque backdrop of coastal Victoria, the novel weaves a narrative that is as gripping as it is heartwarming. The story centers around Sadie Forest, who returns to her hometown of Rivers End after fifteen years, following the death of her father. Her intention is to help her mother, Pam, with the family inn, but she soon finds herself entangled in a decades-old mystery, prompted by a request from Rebecca, the enigmatic owner of the cottage at Whisper Lake.

Sadie's character is meticulously developed, revealing a woman scarred by a past argument with her father that led to her abrupt departure from Rivers End. Her return is marked by a reluctance to confront her personal trauma, yet her compassionate nature draws her into Rebecca's quest to uncover her family history. Sadie's flaws, including her avoidance of emotional confrontation and her initial detachment from her family, are balanced by her loyalty, intelligence, and a deep-seated desire to help others. Her relationship with her mother, Pam, is strained but slowly heals as they navigate the challenges of running the inn and confront their shared grief. The introduction of Dan, a local construction company boss, adds a layer of romantic tension to the narrative, offering Sadie a chance at a new beginning. Rebecca, the reclusive owner of the cottage, serves as a catalyst for Sadie's personal growth. Her vulnerability and determination to find her family resonate with Sadie, compelling her to confront her own past. Rebecca's character is shrouded in mystery, her past filled with secrets that gradually unravel as the story progresses. Her relationship with Sadie is one of mutual trust and understanding, as they both seek solace and healing.

One of the central themes of "The Cottage at Whisper Lake" is the exploration of family secrets and their lasting impact on individuals and communities. The novel delves into the hidden truths that families often conceal, and how these secrets can shape the lives of future generations. Through Rebecca's quest to uncover her family history, the novel highlights the importance of confronting the past in order to move forward. The theme of homecoming is also prominent, as Sadie's return to Rivers End forces her to confront her past and reconcile with her family. The novel explores the idea that home is not just a place, but a state of mind, and that true belonging requires facing one's demons and embracing one's roots. The theme of healing is woven throughout the narrative, as Sadie, Pam, and Rebecca each embark on their own journeys of self-discovery and emotional recovery. The novel emphasizes the power of forgiveness, compassion, and human connection in overcoming trauma and finding peace.

Clark's novel is characterized by its evocative descriptions of the coastal Victorian setting, which serves as a backdrop for the characters' emotional journeys. The tone of the novel is both melancholic and hopeful, as it explores themes of loss, grief, and redemption. The plot twists are well-executed, adding layers of intrigue to the narrative and keeping the reader engaged.

In closing, "The Cottage at Whisper Lake" is a captivating read that will resonate with fans of contemporary fiction and stories about family, secrets, and healing. Love, loss, lies, estrangement, misunderstandings and coming home are some of the themes in this beautifully written story, Sadie returns to Rivers End after many years to help her mom after the death of her father, a very controlling and unkind man. Her mother is of course still mourning and seemingly broken, but in a short time her mother rediscovers herself, what makes her happy and the joy in living. She also has it in her head to play matchmaker for Sadie. Sadie is a documentarian and investigator and spends her career trying to make the world a better place by helping those in need of her work. She is quite good at it. Then while out on a walk through the town, which has changed a lot in her time away, she meets Rebecca, a neighbor who has her own issues and is trying to live a quiet life after having been torn away from her beloved father and brother as a young girl. She’s lived a life of solitude and sadness mostly in hiding due to her circumstances. Sadie, knows she needs to dig in to Rebeccas story as she has come to adore her and knows something is amiss so she digs in. The story is overall both heartbreaking and love filled. The story is told in flashbacks and current times and is an emotional listen that is worth every second of your time to listen or read. the narration was wonderful and added to the experience. This was my first but his author and I am officially a big fan of hers.

Sadie Foster is visiting her her home town of Rivers End for the first time in fifteen years. Not happy with the way her controlling father treated her mother, she fled to Sydney after finishing school and has become successful making documentaries about the socially disadvantaged in society. Now her father has died, and she’s returned to see how her mother is coping with the motel she ran with her husband.

Not long after she arrives, Sadie helps local man Dan look for Rebecca, an elderly woman who has wandered off from her cottage. Dan tells her she doesn’t have dementia but occasionally gets lost in the past looking for someone she lost. Sadie realises Rebecca has a sad mystery in her childhood and is resolved to help her solve it.

It was lovely to watch Sadie and her mother reconnecting and forgiving each other for the past. Sadie also comes to understand that her mother loved her father and that he loved her too but wasn’t able to express that at the time. With Sadie’s help her mother opens up and embraces new experiences and looks forward to making some changes in the future. Sadie also finds herself falling for Dan who is a lovely warm character and perhaps making some changes in her life too. She also helps Rebecca uncover what really happened when she was a child, resulting in a wonderful ending.

This one pulled me right in…and oh, ALL the feels! Like a big, warm hug…
Sadie is all grown up now, and does documentaries for a well known company…but when her father dies, she feels the pull to come home to her small town that she left (well really, ran away from) when she was 18….

Her Mom, Pam, is running the family’s Inn, all by herself…and kind of in a daze, since her husband’s passing. But is so happy to have Sadie come home.

But Sadie can’t wait to return back to HER home…and work.

We travel through time while Sadie meets Rebecca, an older woman, who has some secrets of her own… and at the same time, seems to be totally LOST and SAD… 😕

And Dan, the owner of the company that’s fixing up all the places in town. And, rebuilding the town.

And many of the small town folk… that make up the very essence of it!

So many little stories that pop up inside the main one. So many ways to tug at your heart. And oh, such a beautiful story that unfolds!!

Warning: Make sure you have tissues for the last half hour or so of the book…and I’d recommend you read the last bit alone. 🥹

5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me!

When a reviewer said this story had left her with tears in her eyes, I had no idea I would have a very similar experience. Books don’t normally make me emotional, but The Cottage on Whisper Lake turned out to be the exception.
It’s so many different things: a gentle love story, a dual time line tale, linking both Sadie and Rebecca's lives. In the present, documentary maker Sadie Forest returns home following her father’s death. There are ghosts of her past to face and when she accidentally becomes involved in a search for elderly Rebecca Myers, she meets builder Daniel and is drawn to both him and the mystery surrounding this woman.
Rebecca’s childhood story is told separately. The family have moved from Melbourne following her mother’s tragic drowning and follows twelve year old Becky, as she is called, who together with her father and brother Charlie, begin to make a new life in Driftwood Cove. Becky is a strong and determined character, but even she cannot stop what fate has in store for her.
Through Sadie’s quiet investigation, the pieces of Rebecca’s past life slowly come together, resulting in a conclusion which, I have to confess, did give me an emotional few moments. It’s a lovely read with an interesting story and a fabulous coastal backdrop. And even better that, it is book one of a series. I can’t wait for the next instalment.
I would like to thank Netgalley, Phillipa Nefri Clark and Storm Publishing for an ARC of The Cottage at Whisper Lake in exchange for an honest review.
