"The author, Mike Roscoe, was actually the joint pen name of a couple of Kansas City writers, John Roscoe and Mike Russo, who actually worked for the Hargrave Detective Agency. There’s a photo of them on the back cover of my Signet edition of Death is a Round Black Ball (1952): two hard looking dudes in hats, sporting killer smiles."
Fair imitation Mike Hammer written by two real life detectives (John Roscoe and Mike Russo) writing as Mike Roscoe. Third entry in the Johnny April series.
I enjoyed this little yarn considerably more than the usual Spillane nonsense. At least these guys could actually write. No major surprises but they don’t completely show their full hand, either.
I might read other entries in this series sometime in the future.
