Once Upon a Christmas by Margaret Watson is book nine in the Blackhawk Security series. This book is my first by this author and can definitely be read as a complete stand alone. This is a romantic suspense that kept me turning the pages from the beginning to the end. The cover grabbed my attention first and am so glad I decided to pick this up for my holiday reading.
Mackenzie Stone is twenty nine years old. Several months previously, Mackenzie inherited the CEO position of her Grandmother’s foundation after her passing. Mackenzie loved her grandmother and wants to continue to do her best to help women who are down on their luck with the foundation. But some are not as happy that Mackenzie was named CEO and felt they should have gotten the position. Over the months, several attempts have been made on her life. And a few of her employees are outright disrespectful at work. But, it’s this latest attempt that changed her life.
Diego Lopez is thirty two years old and has been with Blackhawk Security for two years. This is his second career and he loves it. He was in Seattle helping with another case and on his way back to his hotel. He just happened to be in the right place at the right time and his instinct told him that something was not right. That is the night he met Mackenzie Stone and maybe even the night he fell in love with her.
After hearing about what’s been going on, Diego convinces Mackenzie that she needs a body guard. It doesn’t have to be him but she needs protection until they figure out what’s going on. But she already trusts him and wants no one else. So Diego poses as a college friend learning about how to run a foundation so he can go to work with her every day. The initial attraction was already there between these two but since they are together twenty four hours a day, it becomes stronger. Falling for your protectee is against every rule there is but Diego can’t help himself.
In Diego, Mackenzie finds safety, and the window to a world she didn’t know existed. To say her own mother is unpleasant is an understatement. Mackenzie dreads the holidays every year. But after meeting Diego and eventually seeing how his family is, she realizes what she’s been missing out on. The closeness and love of family. As Diego and Mackenzie delve deeper into what’s been going on at the foundation, the danger intensifies. Their only hope is to find who is responsible before they try again successfully to end Mackenzie’s life.
I loved these two together. Their connection was so strong. They trusted and respected each other. And I loved seeing Mackenzie with Diego’s family. The suspense was amazing and kept me turning the pages to find out what was going on. I enjoyed this so much and definitely hope to read more by this author in the future.
Well-written, easy-to-follow story! It grabbed me from the opening scenes, full of action and adventure. A young woman, who happens to the head of a family foundation, has a series of close accidents. When a man follows her and tries to kill her with a boxcutter, she hires the man who helped her. He's a bodyguard for Blackhawk Security.
I couldn't put it down! Now I need to read the rest of the series. (But this one is definitely a standalone.)

POV: Once Upon a Christmas is a 3rd person POV book. The POVs are focused on Mackenzie and Diego.
Series: Once Upon a Christmas is the 9th book in The Blackhawk Security series. You can read this as a standalone. I recommend reading the first eight books to understand the series.

Plot Synopsis (as spoiler-free as I can get):
When Mackenzie is attacked and injured, Diego is there to subdue her attacker and provide aid to her. When he finds out that this is the 4th attack she has endured, he suggests hiring him as a bodyguard. Taking his advice, she hires him, and they begin investigating who is behind her attacks. When the evidence points to the employees at the foundation she inherited, Diego poses as her college friend who has come into money and is looking into starting his foundation. Mackenzie and Diego didn’t expect the intense attraction they had for each other. As the attacks continue and pick up, Diego needs to find out who is behind them and why. Mackenzie’s life is at stake, and he isn’t going to risk it. Will they find out who wants Mackenzie dead and why?
Main Characters
Mackenzie Stone: I liked Mackenzie. She was a little reserved for a character at the beginning of the book. But, once the author explained her backstory, I understood why she was so reserved. She had a horrible childhood. It also explained why her relationship with her family was so strained. Add in that she inherited the family’s foundation instead of her mother, and it became almost unbearable. She dealt with the attempts on her life pretty well (excluding that one scene where she drank Scotch and dry-humped Diego). I also liked how she dealt with her employees (including the unruly ones). But, her true strength showed at the end of the book. She dealt with everything (and I mean everything) like a boss. Her speech at the jail was spot on.
Diego Lopez: I liked Diego, but I wish the author had been more forthcoming with his background. I wouldn’t say I liked waiting until halfway through the book to find out who and what he was. Other than that, he was perfect for Mackenzie. Diego was very good at his job, and he gave Mackenzie excellent advice about looking into the foundation’s financial records (and the records of the list of suspect employees Mackenzie had). His actions and reactions at the end of the book were outstanding. I liked how he stood beside Mackenzie and supported her through everything.
My review:
Once Upon a Christmas was a great book to read. Its fast-moving, well-written storyline kept me glued to the book. I got invested in Mackenzie and Diego’s romance. Once Upon a Christmas is an excellent book for those who enjoy romantic suspense.
The main storyline centers around Mackenzie, Diego, the foundation, and the attacks on Mackenzie. The author didn’t hide who was behind the financial crimes (the embezzling). It was self-evident from how that person acted. But I had an issue figuring out who was behind Mackenzie’s attacks. I was surprised to find out who it was. That did take me by surprise. That was a neat twist the author put in at the end of the book.
The romance angle was well-written. I liked that Mackenzie and Diego fought their feelings until Chicago. There was a slip-up that involved Scotch and dry humping.
The mystery angle was terrific. As I stated above, I did figure out half the mystery (the embezzling part). But I was surprised by who was behind her attacks and why. It made sense when Mackenzie had that confrontation at the police station.
The end of Once Upon a Christmas was enjoyable. I liked how the author wrapped everything up. But she left me wondering if there would be a book 10.
Many thanks to Margaret Watson for allowing me to read and review Once Upon a Christmas. All opinions stated in this review are mine.
Once Upon a Christmas by Margaret Watson Blackhawk Security #9
Intense, intricately plotted, well-written romantic Suspense that stars Diego Lopez as Blackhawk Security bodyguard protecting MacKenzie Stone from someone that wants to get rid of her. Stayed up till the wee hours of the morning to finish it last night!
What I liked: * MacKenzie: strong, resilient, strategic thinker, knows what she wants, holds her own, has a difficult mother, in charge of the NGO her grandmother established, grows a lot throughout the story, attracted to Diego * Diego: protective, intelligent, strong, lethal, team player, sees the bigger picture, loves his family, had a previous profession before becoming a bodyguard, attracted to MacKenzie * The meet-cute that had a huge impact though not really warm and fuzzy * The plot, pacing, settings, and writing * The chemistry between MacKenzie and Diego and how their relationship evolved – could definitely see them happy together long term * The tie-ins to previous characters and books in the series that were not essential to the story for clarity but added since I have read the books the characters were part of * That the evil characters were eventually determined and dealt with * That there was a happy ending for MacKenzie and Diego with potential for more books in the series
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like * Thinking about how entitled, greedy, narcissistic, and insensitive some people can be and the damage they do others
Did I enjoy this book? Yes Would I read more in this series? Yes
Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.
DNF. Just couldn’t get into it. I didn’t feel like I knew either of them very well.
I’ve read this author before and I had exactly the same issues before. The main characters especially Mackenzie feel very one dimensional. After she’s attacked by a man who tries to kill her at the beginning of the book, Mackenzie who has a few good friends, doesn’t phone any of them, doesn’t seem to connect to anyone. She has co-workers who are friends yet none of them made sure she got home okay. Why wasn’t they waiting with her while she got a ride share? They’re in a rough area (Mackenzie’s words.) and she decides to walk home alone! 😂 Yeah of course she does. No one seems to care about Mackenzie and it’s hard to like her, or get to know her.
Then there’s Mr Wooden Diego who seems almost robotic. He looks at Mackenzie and thinks she’s attractive, but I’ve no clue what he finds attractive about her. Absolutely none! He doesn’t look at her eyes and think how beautiful they are, or her hair, or anything. In fact neither of them do! How are we supposed to believe that they fall in love and have amazing chemistry when they act so woodenly?
I give up with this author. It’s a shame as the plot sounded really good but I was bored and I kept trying, but it droned in and on. Even when danger happens it’s not thrilling.
Once Upon a Christmas is the ninth book in the Blackhawk Security series. It can be read as a standalone with no issues, but I do recommend reading the other books as well to get more information about the company and the other characters who make appearances in this book.
Mackenzie Stone is a strong and intelligent woman who runs the Stone Foundation, which was left to her by grandmother. Diego Lopez, a bodyguard for Blackhawk Security, manages to stop one of the attempts, and convinces Mackenize to hir Blackhawk to protect her. What ensues is a fast-paced, gripping story. While I was able to guess the culprits fairly early on in the book, it was still an enjoyable journey, watching Diego and Mackenzie discover it themselves and to find out the reasons why.
While this wasn’t my favorite book of the series, mainly because I enjoy books more when they’re not quite as obvious as to who the culprits are, I still enjoyed it and thought it was a good addition to the series. The author has a way of grabbing your attention from the beginning and keeping it until the end of the book. She has become one of my go-to authors for a good romantic suspense novel.
**I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy provided by the author**
Mackenzie Stone is the CEO of the Stone Foundation, a foundation started by her beloved grandmother to aide women and children in need. She is aware that others had hoped to be in charge of the foundation, but is that reason enough for someone to try to kill her? Diego Lopez, a bodyguard with Blackhawk Security, believes so after he rescues her from the recent attempt on her life. Learning that there have been other “incidents”, he believes she needs a bodyguard. Although she is a strong and independent woman, she feels safe when she is with Diego. If she is to figure out who has targeted her, she needs his assistance and hires him. He soon is involved in all aspects of her life, both at home and at the foundation by improving her security and guarding her with his life. Will he be able to keep her safe as the threats soon become more dangerous to both of them? An amazing addition to the Blackhawk Security as their attraction soon becomes more than they can control. I have read and highly recommend the entire series! I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)
4++ Stars ⭐⭐⭐✨ ONCE UPON A CHRISTMAS is another captivating Blackhawk Security tale. Mackenzie, a strong independent woman, believes her life is in jeopardy after being physically attacked on the street. Diego, after helping capture Mackenzie’s attacker, proves himself to be a competent protector with good instincts and a natural ability to read people and situations. Despite being toughened by having to deal with her family and some of her staff, Mackenzie recognizes that Diego is the protector she needs. But there’s much more involved than threats to her life, and as the story unfolds and the chemistry between Diego and Mackenzie begins to ignite, this tale becomes intriguing as well as charming, guaranteed to keep you engaged from start to finish. The identity of the “bad guy” will remain a mystery right up until the climactic scenes, and you’ll remain glued to each page until the end to find out what the future holds for Diego and Mackenzie. This book is an entertaining mix of drama, suspense, romance, and passion, making it a hard one to put down.
When it comes to romantic suspense, I always prefer and enjoy stories where the female main character, despite being the subject of harassment and torment by the villain, remains fierce and uncowering. Add to that a healthy dose of vulnerability that neatly lends itself for the protective hero to safeguard valiantly, then that to me is what fantastic romantic suspense is all about. In this Christmas romantic suspense by Margaret Watson, all of those ingredients I longed for were satisfactorily delivered. What made this story even more alluring to me was the added complexity lent by the relationship-with-an-expiry trope. When the main characters' relationship is supposedly set to expire at a certain point, I am kept glued to the story by my desire to discover how that expiry date is banished altogether. In this book, I definitely liked the way that matter was resolved. The bonus epilogue looking into the characters five years after was no doubt a delightful added treat.
This is a new author for me but it won't be the last book I will read. She has great characters and the way she weaves her story keeps you not wanting to put the book down, Mackenzie runs a non profit foundation that works to help women who are down on their luck and need a little assistance. Sadly there have been some near disastrous happenings. Going home one night she is mugged and if not for a good Samaritan, she would be dead. Turns out her good Samaritan is Diego Lopez and he works for a security firm. When he realizes the danger Mackenzie is on he talks her into hiring his firm for protection. While protecting her, Diego also investigates her staff and brings in others to help. Can they discover who is trying to kill her and why before it's to late? Will the way they feel about each other grow? Sit back and enjoy the read
This was a really good story, and I’m sure the entire series is too. My only issue was with the editing and continuity. First, Diego had changed all the locks to keypads, but the first time they went back to Mackenzie’s apartment she “dug in her purse for the keys”. Diego used the key to open the door, which doesn’t happen with a keypad. Second, is Diego’s dad’s name Joaquin or Joachin? It switched back and forth a lot. There were a few other things too. It’s just distracting to me. The book was well-crafted. The characters were fleshed out and believable. The tension on the storyline made the book hard to put down! I wanted to see what happened next. I loved the dynamic of Diego’s family and how they accepted Mackenzie.
Mackenzie is a beautiful and wealthy woman. She runs a foundation left to her by her grandmother. The foundation is to help women in need. But something is going on as there have been some disturbing instances and now someone is trying to take her life. Enter the gorgeous Diego Lopez from Blackhawk Security. Mackenzie needs a bodyguard, and he is it. So much happens in this story. What is Diego's secret? Who is after Mackenzie? Where has the money gone? Wow, this story was fantastic. Margaret Watson is on my must-read list most definitely as all of her books are amazing.
This was a very good story about Mackenzie who was attacked on her way home after couple drinks with some work friends. Luckily, an alert Diego interrupted the attacker but the attacker escaped. Diego convinced Mackenzie that she needs a bodyguard and it just so happens that he is a bodyguard. The story goes on trying to figure out why Mackenzie is being targeted and how to keep her safe. It is a very n interesting story with twists and turns that keep you interested.
‘Once Upon a Christmas’ was thrilling. Its riveting page-turning plot was filled with a roller-coaster ride of suspense, tension, action, a couple of twists, and falling in love. Moreover, MacKenzie and Diego, the protagonists, were made for each other and gushed with chemistry. I kept rooting for them. In addition, I liked the author’s vivid descriptions and scintillating word choices which created a tension-filled tone. Overall, I liked the mesmerizing narrative.
Once I saw the use of Jesus's name as an exclamation, I stopped reading. I went to the last chapter to see who the guilty parties were. I then went to my list of never- to- read- again authors and put this author on that list. Why do authors not realize that the use of God's name in vain is offensive to many readers?!
Blackhawk Security Returns... Well, I stayed up late to read this book in one sitting and it was well worth the time! Every moment was exciting! I really loved the scenes with Deigo's family... they made me smile so much! This story kept me engaged throughout! A great addition to this series! Such likable characters! An enjoyable romantic suspenseful tale!
Very fun read - - body guard randomly rescues a woman walking on a street at night and discovers she has been attacked before. He ends up working to keep her safe - and of course, things escalate. Very believable story of what she endures......of course they fall for each other but I knew that by page 3.
After the third attempt on her life Mackenize Stone decided that she needed to hire a bodyguard. After that, she hired a forensic accountant and found people were robbing her blind, the investigation takes some dark twists and turns before finally catching the crooks. Great Read.
The writer grips with the opening chapter and develops a story that keeps you reading on. Also brought the human side into it as well. You get involved in the story and keep reading through.
I have to start by saying romantic suspense is my JAM, and while I guessed most of the things that would happen throughout, I truly enjoyed the story on this one! The lack of editing was distracting and definitely needs some work, though.
Diego and Mackenzie...She's in trouble and bodyguard Diego Lopez is just the person she needs to protect her. Non-stop action, suspense and drama. Find out how Diego and Mackenzie fight to live and love.
I liked this story which combined a lot of drama, with an emotional rollercoaster. The characters were very different and believable, and made me want to read more about them.
Strong alpha body guard paired up with a strong feisty female in desperate need of his services can only lead to hot passionate feelings and lots of action, both in the bedroom and on the street. Great story, great characters and a great HEA.
This book had the makings of a good drama mystery then you had to add graphic sex and make it more like pornography. I do not recommend this book and i wont be reading any more of your books! Thank you kune
Not your typical Christmas story, but very entertaining. Lots of twists and turns, and suspense. Slow growing attraction for bodyguard and client, and quite steamy.
Loved the strong characters as so inspiring. The 2 families' differences were true to life & interspersed within an exciting main story the book was wonderful.
