School is out and Lucy is ready for the perfect summer: lazy days at the pool, invitations to the most exclusive parties, and romantic dates with her hot new boyfriend. That is, until she lands in trouble one too many times and her parents issue the ultimate punishment: a summer job. Suddenly, the summer can't end fast enough.

To make matters worse, the job is painting houses with Justin, the most popular, egotistical guy in school. Spending all summer with Justin might be other girls' dreams, but definitely not Lucy's. After all, Justin is cocky, annoying, and a jerk. So what if he's the most beautiful jerk Lucy's ever seen? Or that his grin makes her forget she’s mad at the world? Or that maybe, just maybe, there's more to Justin than Lucy realizes. Only one thing is certain: it won’t be the summer she wanted, but it might be exactly the one she needs.

When Lizzy Charles isn’t scrambling to raise her two spunky toddlers or caring for premature and sick babies as a neonatal intensive care nurse, she’s in a quiet corner writing or snuggled up with a novel and a few squares of dark chocolate. Black tea keeps her constant and she loves guacamole. She married her high school sweet heart, a heart-melting musician, so it’s no surprise she’s fallen in love with writing contemporary YA romance novels.

For such a quick and easy read this book is not simple, it has many facets that will make reading (and re-reading) it enjoyable to anyone. While the main plot is the developing attraction of spunky (but bratty) Lucy to that of popular, hardworking and handsome Justin, there are a number of other subplots that keep the reader captivated, forcing you to read "just one more chapter."

Readers will be intrigued by the slow transformation of Lucy, as she realizes what a superficial and hurtful person she has become, but knowing it will be incredibly difficult, if not impossible to change after all the darkness and hurt she has endured in her sixteen years of life. Their hearts will also be broken and angered as they read through the parts that revolve around Lucy and her tenuous relationship with her mother who has suffered from depression in the past, wondering how much more hurt their relationship can handle before it breaks forever.

EFFORTLESS WITH YOU is a book that is rich in unique details, enjoyable dialogue, three dimensional characters, and has an excellent mixture of light and sweet aspects, as well as dark and scary moments. I truly hope you start reading it today, you won't be able to put this gem of a book down!

The horror!

It had a lot of cute and cringey moments. Not really sure how to rate it to be completely honest. The main character,Lucy, was bit of a snob really. I hated how she treated people especially her mum and expected everyone to love her back like no..just no...Justin on the other hand, was pretty cool. I really liked him.

3.5 - 4 Stars!!

As I have said before I have kind of gone off YA and I hardly read them unless they are dystopia or fantasy which is again still on rare occasions. But I thought I would give it a shot and hope for the best.

"Remember you are effortless to love."

When I started reading I did read slow because the main female character called Lucy was incredible immature and made such poor, stupid choices and I just wanted to scream at her to open her eyes!! It was pretty typical teenage behaviour and also we see aspects of bullying, peer pressure and much more. I thought I would hate her by the ending but was pleasantly surprised because I ended up liking her.

Lizzy Charles did an awesome job on this book and I think it really did portray the phase we all go through where we are hormonal, say things we don't mean and ignore anything parents try to explain to you because you are way 'cooler' than them.Like obviously they don't know whats going on right? The author really portrays all the frustration and mood swings, all them feelings so well, how at that point we want to make our own decisions and be all grown up.

Oh and Justin, awww Justin! I liked him right from the start and obviously stupid, weirdo Zach was no match for Justin! I loved how Justin wasn't just the typical popular guy that had a string of girls he had slept with and so on. Aww he was sweet, cocky, funny and all out what Lucy needed in life. He was a lot more grown up than her, tough times changed him made him grow up. He seemed to see right through the fake Lucy to who she really was, even when Lucy herself didn't know who she was.

I wanted to know a bit more about the basketball bullying part and can't wait to see how the next book turns out.A very good job on Lucy's character development she really grew up and changed in a positive way.

Oh and look at the pretty cover!! If you are looking for a sweet, cute, teen romance with a lot more, then this is definitely a book for you!

Just finished this amazing awesomeness.

Review soon!

FULL REVIEW:

Oh my holy cuteness! What an adorable read with a droolable boy (gah... Justin, you are mine!) and a wonderful book for teens. (And YA old lady fans like me :))

First... LOVE THIS COVER! It's adorable, and sets the tone up immediately. It's a light and fun book, with its doses of deep and dark, all in the right moments that leave you going "awww" in a cute way, and "awww" in a that's-so-sad way.

Lucy is a cute narrator. The perfect 16 year old who is making mistakes, falling in love, battling with her parents, and trying to stand out in a crowd that she feels is swallowing her up. But she's a cutie, with inner monologue that makes me laugh and leaves me rooting for her to have her moment.

Justin is totally cute and amazing, and he's supposed to come off as a jerk to our leading lady at first, but honestly my hubby is ten times worse, so I thought he was adorbs, lol! He's the typical popular guy with the perfect abs, eyes, and girlfriend, but his personality is so not typical. SPOILER ALERT! Love a guy who wants to save himself. Thank you Lizzy for writing someone different!

Loved the painting during the summer. Loved Alex! Oh my gosh, give me an Alex book please!!!! He was so darn cute. And I loved that Lucy was surrounded by guys in this job, but only one made her heart thump ;) They were all really decent guys too. You have the typical scumbag, but there were a lot of other really lovable boys.

I use the word love a lot. Can you tell I just loved this???

Wonderful easy read, cute YA story, and adorable characters. I can't wait for others to read it so I can chat about it nonstop (and fight for Justin ;))

Great debut, Lizzy. Can't wait to see more.

Take-away point: wasted potential. Read at your own risk.

I’ve been so swamped with academic, school-related reading that I haven’t had time to read for fun. Finally, I forced myself to just sit down, fire up my kindle, and relax.

By the time I finished reading this book, one thing was crystal clear: the author’s refreshingly creative use of literary techniques, and attention to detail was incredibly impressive. However, though the writing seemed polish and clever, the side-stories and little sub-issues were spread too thin, which ultimately seemed to convolute the overall plot.

There were too many issues the author tried to tackle, which ended up taking away from the main “romance” between Lucy and Justin. Basically, I didn’t particularly feel like reading a book that half-heartedly touched on issues of bullying and teen sex (just to name a few). I didn’t feel satisfied by the end of the book; I needed more closure, and the interaction between Lucy and Justin just didn’t do it for me. Boo.

Generally, I liked all the pretty words the author used, and that the book was well edited. But, there were some very cringe-worthy, cheesy moments in the book that killed the “romance” for me. The main ingredient was missing: chemistry between the two main leads, and my own personal connection with the heroine, Lucy.

Still, it seems like a lot of GR members liked this one, so maybe it's just me!

3.25 Estrellas!

There are so any things I loved about this book. I am 30 years old but occasionally enjoy a sweet teen romance story. First the cover...BEAUTIFUL. this book covered so many issues that teen girls go thru everyday...not getting along w parents, losing yourself, bullying, finding yourself, finding love, learning responsibility, sticking up for yourself, and always doing what's best for you! Justin is such an example on what high school boys should be like. If I was a teen I'd definitely be swooning over him (ok I lie, kinda am now) Lucy was such a strong girl who fell off track for a while but held the determination to find herself again and stand up for what she believes in. This is a great book for high schoolers to read. It's a simple sweet romance built from friendship.

I am so in love with this book! Finished it in one sitting.

And not to mention how giddy I am to know there's a second book. I totally just one clicked it :)

I don't know if it's me bring pregnant but I sure cried a lot while reading Effortless With You. Her relationship with her mother is what did me in. Broke me and brought me back together. I think it was because I could relate both to mother and daughter.

The book deals with some bullying and I don't see how anyone could bully Lucy. She's awesome; although at the beginning her attitude irked me. But I understood it the more I read.

It you haven't read this book I don't know what your waiting for! Go get it.

Review-
I am so in love with this book! Finished it in one sitting. I honestly don't know what printed me to read EWY, but I'm sure glad I did. The cover is pretty but it didn't really catch my attention. I just decided I needed something new to read. Once I started though, I couldn't stop, as I said before I read in one sitting.

The book deals with some bullying and I don't see how anyone could bully Lucy. She's awesome; although at the beginning her attitude irked me. But I understood it the more I read. As a freshman, she makes the varsity basketball team. Lucy is a prodigy, a bad ass even. Which is exactly why she gets subjected to bullying in the first place.

Before long she quits basketball and she's never the again.

Fast forward to a time where *gasp* she has to get a summer job painting houses with none other than hottie, Justin. Boy he is one cocky a*hole. Did I say cocky? No, i totally meant dreamy, loveable, and at times kind if broody. My favorite combination!!

During the summer Lucy foms quick friendships with Justin and some of the guys painting. She learns a lot about herself and what it truly means to grow up. EWY really hit home. Not only does it deal with issues of bullying, it had a heartfelt and realistic look at a mother/daughter relationship. It definitely brought me back to a time of being sixteen and feeling as if the world was against me, especially my mother.

The romance was perfectly done. I adored every single one of these characters. I know I was going to have a very hard time saying goodbye to them. Luckily, there's a second book!! Imagine my joy in finding the story continues.

For those of you in need of a pick me up type story, this is for you. A great summer read that will keep you engaged until the very end.

It you haven't read this book I don't know what your waiting for! Go get it.

"You are effortless for me to love. You always have been and you always will be."

I still don't know whether I loved or hated this book! There was something about it that I didn't like and then there were a lot of things about it that I did like! It started to get better as it progressed and by the end I did really enjoy it, but I felt at times that it went a bit slow! The plot developed nicely in some places, but slow in others and sometimes I felt myself losing interest a little! The plot was really cute though! I didn't like that the two main characters relationship took so long to develop though! As the book developed the sexual tension between the two characters started to heat up, but it took until the end of the book for them to admit their feelings for each other and for their relationship to fully develop! The plot was really good though and there were some scenes that were really gripping and left me desperate to find out what was going to happen next! The characters were great! Lucy was the main character and for quite a lot of this book I didn't like her! I found that she was quite rude to her parents! I would honestly never speak to my parents the way she did, but in a way I could understand why she did as she was in a dark place! She had her parents pushing her, a best friend who was using her and Lucy was still trying to find herself in it all! My heart did break for her as the book progressed and she started to lose everything! I fell in love with Lucy though in one particular scene near the end of this book! Throughout this book, Lucy grew so much! She had changed so much since the beginning and she was like a different, better person at the end! This was because of Justin! He taught Lucy how to be a better person and I completely adored him for it! Justin was the love interest of Lucy and he was such a sweetheart! The little things he did for Lucy made me smile! Justin taught Lucy a lot and they made such a cute couple! I could tell that Justin had feelings for Lucy as soon as they stated working together, but it took him ages to admit his feelings for her which annoyed me as I would have loved to have seen their relationship develop a little earlier and then see it develop even more! There were quite a few other characters in this book as well and they all added so much to the story! There were some good characters and some bad characters, but they were all amazing! I know that this book is a standalone as everything was fully resolved and the ending was beautiful, but I wouldn't mind reading another book or a novella to Lucy and Justin's story! The cover for this book is really pretty! Big thank you to Lizzy for an ARC of Effortless With You and to Katrina of Inklings Literary Agency for asking me to be on the Blog Tour!

Lucinda Zwindler is introduced to us as a poster child for teenage-rebellion. As a victim of bullying, betrayal and the cruel nature of high-school cliques, Lucy has adopted a bad attitude as a protective shell and has developed the knack of making poor choices. Her parents reach their boiling-point, step in and mandate her to a summer job painting houses in hopes to teach her some responsibility and get her back on track.

Justin Marshall is your cocky, stereotypical jock. He’s popular, he’s got the ego the size of his head and he’s got the looks to back it up. Justin embodies everything Lucy hates—he’s a popular, egotistical jerk. Every guy wants to be him and every girl wants to be with him. Every girl, that is, except for Lucy. The story gets interesting when Justin shows up at her front door to take her to her new painting job. Even though the two spend every day together, Lucy can’t seem to figure Justin out. He just frustrates the crap out of her!

Slowly but surely, Lucy gets to know the ins and outs of Justin. The more she learns, the more her image of him changes—for the better! Her annoyance with Justin slowly diminishes and emotions she can’t control continue to grow despite all her efforts to deter them. Will Lucy listen to her head and be able to write those feelings off or will Justin make her see that there are some things in life that doesn’t suck?

What a novel to debut with, Lizzy! I loved the story and definitely had a few late/sleepless nights trying to finish it! It touches on a few very real themes (bullying, mental health and growing up just to name a few) which make the book very relatable.

I definitely enjoyed watching the summer unfold as one of self-discovery for Lucy. She goes through her ups and downs to amend broken relationships, forge new ones and in doing so, learns a whole lot about herself during her healing process. It’s fun to see Lucy slowly come to the conclusion that everyone else can see from the first chapters!

The characters introduced in this novel leave more stories to tell--*hinthintnudgenudge*!!

I read this book blind, didn't read the blurb, didn't know what it's about, and I'm happy I did! It's an easy heartwarming 5! It is a beautiful story and I would recommend to all especially the young adults.

Lucy is beautiful, smart and is a natural in basketball. But being a freshman and beating the girls on higher level seems to only get her in trouble. She was bullied and she couldn't tell her parents. So, she gave up her love for basketball and her identity and dated a douchebag name Zach and would do everything Marisa, her bully bitch "supposedly" bestfriend tells her to do. She would be so mean and hurtful to her family.

1

Justin is this gorgeous, beautiful guy who see's the true Lucy. He wants to help Lucy and to open her eyes and see how and who her so called bestfriend and boyfriend really is towards her. But Lucy only thinks the worst instead in Justin.... until she get to really know him.

2

This book is about bullies, family, friends and real love. It might be a YA but it is really an inspirational read. One of those I couldn't put down once I start reading.

EFFORTLESS WITH YOU is a beautiful story about Lucy, a young girl who reinvented herself after a year of constant bullying. Unfortunately, the transformation from bullied basketball player to popular party-goer comes with consequences. Though she now eats in the cafeteria instead of the janitor’s closet, she quits the basketball team, her grades suffer, and her relationship with her parents slips from non-existent to hostile.

This is what makes EFFORTLESS such a great read. Though Lucy is cheated on, embarrassed by her parents, and used by a manipulative best friend, her anger and resentment is overcome by a new love, new friends, and a new relationship with a mother who could never show just how much her daughter meant to her.

Lizzy Charles writes with pure emotion, and Lucy’s character experiences what could happen to any high school girl. The narrative is powerful, heart-felt, and lovely. I cannot recommend this book enough.

A nicely-written YA book that explores not only the obligatory romance, but also issues of self-esteem, parent-child relationship and friendship. The authors fleshes out her characters well, especially Lucy’s and in the beginning, you can’t help but feel flashes of annoyance and frustration whenever Lucy exhibits low self-esteem and ingratiatingly low behavior in order to keep her dubious friendship with Marissa.

After a disaster, Lucy is forced to take on a summer job painting houses with Justin, a boy she dislikes. Friendship and romance aside, it is gratifying to see how she finally embarks on a self-discovery journey to regain her former confidence and healthy attitude and finally redeems herself.

Readers who enjoyed “How My Summer Went Up in Flames” by Jennifer Doktorski will like this book. Have included it in my daughter’s To-Read List.

This is a sweet, heart-warming tale that combines genuine characters with the real-life teen emotions of love, self-discovery and heartache. The characters come fully realized off the page and the story winds its way softly to a sweet and plausible resolution. I was lucky enough to read this just before it went to print, and the easy to read prose and effortless style make this a very compelling read. If you like romance sprinkled with teen angst, this is definitely one worth reading!

I think this book is fantastic. I started and finished it in one day. I had to. Lucy is such a well developed character and the secondary characters surrounding her were fabulous as well. The pacing was spot on.

Justin is a typical YA guy, yet so much more. His hotness and popularity are what make Lucy dismiss him as just another guy not worth her time. Justin's many layers surprised me, as does it surprise our leading lady.

Overall, a fantastic read. Makes me want to paint some houses!

When I saw the cover and read the synopsis for Effortless with You, I thought it sounded like a cute YA contemporary romance, and it is, but I wasn't expecting just how much I really enjoyed it. It's finally summer. Lucy is looking forward to hanging out at the pool with her popular friend Marissa. She finally has a boyfriend, Zach, and things seem to be going good, well except for at home. When Lucy was a freshman in high school, she suffered some intense bullying because of her athletic ability and the fact that she was better than the senior girls. It was awful for her, and coupled with some "mom issues," her already low self-esteem hit rock bottom. Enter Marissa, who "saves" her and "transforms" her into the image that Marissa wants her to be, which isn't necessarily a good thing. After her grades dropped and she gets in trouble one too many times, Lucy finds herself with a job, arranged by her parents, for the entire summer. Who she wasn't expecting to find sitting behind the wheel of the truck she was picked up in for work was Justin, the most beautiful, cocky, popular, aggravating boy ever, with eyes that you could lose yourself in for days. While other girls swooned over him, Lucy was determined that wasn't going to be her. As the summer progresses and she and Justin get to know each other, she begins to see him for who he really is, and her heart begins to betray her. He's nothing like she thought he was, and that makes it even harder for her to know that they will never be anything more than friends. After all, he doesn't see her in that way, he has a girlfriend, and there is no way he would be interested in her, is there?

Effortless with You was a great YA romance. Though the plot is good, it isn't unique, but the character building was superb and really set this story apart from being just another cute YA romance. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Lucy's character grow and come of age. She dealt with some really hard, really tough things. She was naive about a lot of things, especially regarding Marissa, Marissa's motives, and her boyfriend, but she also came to possess a wisdom and strength by the end of the novel that were beyond her years. She has issues that are centered around her and her mom's mental status that go back to early childhood, which have deeply scarred her, and I was really touched as they worked through this over the course of the book (and it wasn't easy by any means). She met a really great group of guys, who she worked with, and I just loved them all, especially Alex. Then there was Justin - swoon - he was such an amazing guy. He could come off as a jerk, at least in Lucy's mind, but he was really great underneath. I just loved him. Their's is not a love at first sight relationship by any means, and it was really great watching them as they progressed from not getting along, to friendship, to even more. Lucinda didn't always handle things in the best way and messed up a lot, but she also grew tremendously. I was almost like watching a caterpillar turn into a butterfly. Overall, this is a wonderful YA contemporary romance, and if you enjoy that type of story, then Effortless with You is something I most definitely recommend checking out.

How easy is it to develop self-confidence when your own mother has never really been able to give you anything? This is how Lucy has grown up. Her mother went into post-partum depression shortly after she was born and sixteen years later, there are still lingering effects. As a result, Lucy hasn't had that nurturing and special bond that often makes the difference between self-confidence and withdrawing when life becomes overwhelming. After discovering success as a freshman basketball player, she endured severe bullying by older, jealous players and it affected her so much, she quit and even started eating lunch in the janitor's closet.
Now, at sixteen, she thinks she's turned a few corners. She has a glitzy best friend, Marissa, who took her on as a rehab project, and a hot boyfriend, Zach. Unfortunately, Marissa is really a self-centered manipulator who sees her more as a toy she can twist and turn, while Zach is a horndog who spends most of their time together trying to get her to do things she's not ready for, or texting his soccer buddies. What Lucy desperately wants to believe is a cool social life, is really an failing attempt to fit in and be cared about.
When she sneaks out to go to a pool party with Marissa after being grounded, her mom shows up and not only embarrasses the heck out of her, but issues an ultimatum. Lucy will get a summer job to help her learn responsibility. Too bad Mom can't see just how hurting her daughter really is.
When she's picked up for her first day of work as a painter bu Justin, perhaps the hottest and most popular guy at her school, sparks fly and there's lots of snark between them. Lucy is sure he's smug, self-centered and shallow. Justin doesn't do much to change her mind at first, because he has reasons why he doesn't want her to know the real person behind his public image.
Working on his painting crew is more than interesting. Lucy faints because she's too stubborn to avoid dehydration, catches Marissa and Zach making out at the pool in the complex she's painting and falls from a ladder when Justin is too stubborn to get the crew to safety when a wild storm approaches.
As the summer progresses, she begins to realize a number of things. She's more her own person than she thought, Justin is a much nicer and more complex guy than she realized, her mom can't help being depressed and she misses basketball a heck of a lot more than she ever thought she could.
This started out feeling a bit cheesy, but quickly turned into a very absorbing read. Mature teens who have experienced confidence issues, betrayal, attraction to someone who turned out to be a lot more than meets the eye and those who have experienced family mental health issues will all like this book a lot.

Sweet YA read about Lucy, a girl with self esteem issues. Bullied in her freshman year of high school, she made the social mistake of being as good if not better than her older classmates on the basket ball team. They made her life hell and she learned to hide out, to lose herself so the teasing and taunting would stop.

Marissa is one of the beautiful ones. Somehow she became friends with Lucy and is teaching her how to dress herself to attract guys. It seems to be working because she is dating Zach so she must be doing better..he must like her for who she is right? Lucy may not be as thrilled with Marissa as she makes out, but she isn't ready to go back into the social leprosy world that she came from.

The only fly in the ointman...Justin Marshall. He is dating the most popular girl in school, Jennifer and is the guy every girl drools over and every guy wants to hand out with. He is cocky and arrogant and Lucy can't stand him. Right?

So when she is caught lying to her parents about something, she is forced to work a job her parents line up for her-painting houses for the rest of the summer. One of her co-workers-Justin.

What happens when these two spend tons of time together and Lucy realizes there is so much more to Justin than his looks. But he has a girlfriend and she had a boyfriend. This one has angst and betrayal and some social issues that cause great hurt at any age. I really liked it and am jumping in to the sequel; Perfectly Messy.

"Effortless With You" was a wonderful read and it has to be added to your Must Read List! Lizzy Charles' debut book was amazing! Her story line and character development kept me reading for hours. This is a story of young love, which in itself is great, but I really enjoyed all the subplots which kept me involved along with the development of not only the main characters, but those around them.

Here's the story of Lucinda "Lucy" Zwindler at the beginning of her summer vacation in which Lucy feels will be great, but is further from the truth. Family strife, boyfriend and friend issues, problems from her past, and then placed in a job she really doesn't want are all things she must overcome to be a better person not only for her family, but for herself - stronger and confident.

This story itself is an easy read, but it is the depth of emotions Ms. Charles gives all her characters that make you laugh, cringe, and cry. I highly recommend that you download this book and read right away. I can't wait to continue reading Lucy's story in "Perfectly Messy". Kudos to Lizzy Charles and here's for a prolific writing career for she's one to watch and enjoy..

3.5 to 4 stars. Enjoyed this book. It's not simply light fluff--there are some good lessons for teen girls in how easy it is to get wrapped up and lost in the desire to become popular and be accepted (don't even get me started on Marissa and my disgust for her). And there were also some real issues between her and her mom.
I loved Justin! He's the stand-up, caring, protective type of guy you want your daughter to date. And I loved that he was open about wanting to stay a virgin until marriage. I was glad that Lucy and Justin's relationship started with her dislike for him, then they became friends and slowly progressed to her falling for him. About 3/4 of the way through, my heart was breaking for the poor girl. The ending was great, although I could have used a little more progression earlier on.

The book is mostly clean--no sex. One character tries to force himself on a female character, but it is stopped. Another character ends up being a lesbian, but it's just mentioned. There are also a couple mild swear words early on.
