Cat timp exista tinuturi necunoscute, oameni inca neintalniti, experiente inca neduse pana la capat, multe lucruri sunt posibile, si depinde de om ce anume sa aleaga in fiecare situatie. Radu Tudoran insusi a calatorit pe marile si fluviile globului pamantesc, a fost fascinat de lumea diversa, pestrita a porturilor, de neprevazutul din caracterul firilor alunecoase, nestatornice, dar a fost si increzator ca in orice mediu social pot sa existe, pur si simplu, oameni morali: nobili in porniri, altruisti incurabili, generosi dezinteresati si fiinte drepte cu semenii lor, in pofida tuturor greutatilor si obstacolelor intalnite in cale. Nu aventura superficiala si egoista il preocupa pe Radu Tudoran, ci sensul moral pe care-l aduce cu ea calatoria plina de neasteptat, cea receptata de altii, ulterior, ca o aventura. Pentru el, viata este taramul intamplarilor, care-si developeaza talcul lor, iar romancierul nu trebuie decat sa faca verosimila inlantuirea evenimentelor. Acest idealism moral este recognoscibil in toata opera „fratelui lui Geo Bogza“, Radu Tudoran.

After he finishes the Military High school from Manastirea Dealu in 1930 and, than, the Military School from Sibiu in 1932, he works for 6 years (1932-1938), as an Officer of Romanian Army.
He gives up to his military career in 1938, year in which he makes his debut with a story in the “Lumea Româ
neasca” (“Romanian World”) magazine, led by Zaharia Stancu. There is an obvious connection between his resignation from army and his first literary successes. In the same year, he changes his name from Nicolae Bogza to Radu Tudoran, to not suggest any connection to his brother Geo Bogza (famous Romanian writer).
In 1940 he publishes his first book, volume of short stories “Orasul cu fete sarace” (“The city with poor girls”). In the following year, 1941, he publishes the novel “Un port la rasarit” (“The port from the east”), novel that was noted by the critics with a big delay and, than, from politic reasons, was passed in a shadow corner of oblivion.
While his brother Geo Bogza managed to survive in the turbulent years 1945-1947, being a left side militant, Radu Tudoran more honest and less skilful, wrote articles in which he criticized, on equal sides, the right extremism, but also the politics of Soviet Union.
In the same cloudy period for Romania, 1945-1947, he continued to write and publish, he raised money, established in Braila, and he built a ship that he planned to travel the world.
Suddenly, at the end of the year 1947, when the control of soviets over Romania became totally, Radu Tudoran, was passed quickly in anonymity .
Still, he wasn’t undergone neither to persecutions and neither The Security raids or jail. Being in this cone of shadow of disgrace, he chooses translations, especially from Russian and Soviets authors, as a way of maintaining his contact with literature and as a way of living.
He comes back on the literature scene with a harmless novel for young people “Toate panzele sus!” (“All sails up!”) in 1945, which becomes instantly a big success for all age’s audiences, lighting the imagination of millions of young Romanian people for a couple of generations. The novel, written with a huge amount of narrative and descriptive talent, is strong influenced by author’s passion for adventure. He describes the journey that Radu Tudoran wasn’t able to do in 1948, although his ship, his own schooner “Speranta” (“Hope”), was built and was waiting for him to leave in the port area of Braila. His model was the navigator Joshua Slocum, whom he wanted to leave around the world.
Radu Tudoran always lived withdrawn, until the end of his life, but he published every time only best-sellers. In 1977, the total number of copies of his books – each was almost re-edited many times – exceeded 1 500 000 of edited copies. With the money from his novels, the writer built a new shipment for trips, smaller than his first ship, because this one was destined for less bold trips.
His most ambitious project was the 7 novels cycle “Sfarsit de mileniu” (“End of Milenium”), a complex fresco of the Romanian society of the 20th Century. At first I was reluctant to begin reading a book that had well over 900 pages (this was several years ago) and the first 80 pages or so were not helpful for the book's case (as they included a detailed description of the setting, some of the characters...) and I nearly gave it up; but after I continued reading page after page, I became more and more interested in the action and the story line. I can vividly remember sitting down as a pre-teen, hiding in my room to immerse myself in the well-described world adventure. It feels like yesterday as I recall how I fell in love with the characters and their journeys.
I can honestly say I couldn't put the novel down for the following two days. I hated the ending as I am not fond of ambiguities and loose ends; still, I did enjoy spending some hours post-reading, contemplating how the narrative would have continued if I were the author of the book.
I recommend it wholeheartedly to all the adventurous souls out there who know Romanian and who love to travel the world by simply reading -as I guarantee -, this book will transform you into a world visitor via your imagination. I also strongly believe this novel should be mandatory reading in Romanian schools not only because it broadens ones perspectives, but also due to the complexity of the descriptive writing which will aid the reader in imagining the littlest of details.
P.S. As far as I know, the novel hasn't been translated in English. Oh, how I wish I got my degree in languages! as I would do it myself, to offer foreigners the opportunity to travel the world through the mind of a Romanian.

Aventuri pe mare, supraviețuirea în condiții neprielnice, căutarea unui prieten drag, dispărut în valurile nemiloase, cercetarea pământurilor pe care nu a călcat niciodată picior de om... despre asta e romanul lui Radu Tudoran, Toate pânzele sus!

am votat maxim pentru Toate panzele sus! pentru clipele minunate pe care mi le-a oferit lectura in copilarie. Au trecut ani multi din 1973-74 de cind am descoperit pentru prima data aventurile Sperantei si ale bravului echipaj romanesc pe marile si oceanele lumiisi marturisesc ca am avut un pic teama sa recitesc la 40+ de ani paginile care mi-au facut imaginatia sa zboare la 10 ani. ochiul critic a trecut pina la urma usor peste stingaciile ocazionale in dialog, pasajele pline de patos sau intoarcerile de situatie uneori fortate. Consider ca volumul isi merita locul printre clasicii literaturii de aventuri si sper ca generatiile viitoare il vor descoperi cu aceeasi placere

"Avem taine şi le purtăm cu noi, taine mai mici, taine mai mari - când se dezvăluie îşi pierd o parte, două, trei, şapte, nouă părţi din puterea lor -, alteori se pierd de tot, ca puful păpădiei suflat de un vânt tăricel. Dar avem taine şi le purtăm cu noi - şi suferim, ne întristăm, plângem din pricina lor sau râdem şi ne bucurăm, fiindcă sunt şi altfel de taine, care ascund câte fericiri nu gândeşti."
Nici nu îmi aduc aminte dacă aveam 11 sau 12 ani atunci când am încercat să citesc prima dată "Toate pânzele sus". Cred că acum mă bucur că nu am citit-o atunci.
Cine l-a adorat pe Edmond Dantes din Contele de Monte Cristo îl va iubi la fel de mult pe Anton Lupan în acest roman. Avem un roman de aventuri, clasic al genului pentru literatura românească, iar povestea urmărește căutarea unui vechi prieten pierdut de-al lui Anton Lupan, Pierre Vaillant, începând din Sulina și până la capătul lumii, în Țara de Foc (sudul extrem al americii latine).
E un roman atât de bun, plin de intrigi și răsturnări de situație, cu personaje bine scrise și o acțiune ce te ține prins în ciuda numărului mare de pagini. 😁

When I read this book I was absolutely shocked at how amazing it was, I (at least) consider it to be one of the best Romanian book ever written. In fact, I think it's in my top 3 favorite books.

"All Sails Up!" is a novel about pure adventure, freedom and chasing dreams, with strong-willed and fleshed out, original characters that will make you cry with joy, frown, laugh with tears and look deep within yourself. The premise is about the Romanian Anton Lupan and his lifelong dream, an epic voyage to "The Land of Fire" in South America with his friend, Pierre Vaillant. The trouble comes when Pierre goes missing along with the ship they intended to sail, L'Esperance. Many years and struggles later, Anton finds the shipwreck of L'Esperance and understands that he needs to embark on the journey in that moment or he'll miss his chance.
Lupan then gathers a crew of reliable people and the author proceeds to take the reader in one of the most epic travels. It's like you'll see with your own two eyes sceneries from across the Mediterranean, Atlantic and South American places, described in such magical great detail. Not only that, but my general knowledge about seamanship, various cultures, traditions and history improved in no time. You go from Romania to Greece, Turkey, Arabian islands, France, Argentina, Chile and all the seas in between them. From the Muslim rituals in the Saint Sofia Cathedral in Istanbul to the cockfights in Buenos Aires, I now know a little bit more facts about many places on the Globe.
Also, the crew is mainly from a Romanian background, but it also has characters from Turkey, Greece or the Middle East. It is really interesting to see the attitudes people had (and maybe still have) regarding other cultures and traditions. Despite minor misunderstandings, they all get along and understand each other, Radu Tudoran making a point in promoting multiculturalism and friendship between the nations. For example, Ismail, a Turk (which weren't very well seen by Romanians some time ago because of the Otoman's Empire domination), is one of the most beloved characters in Romanian literature, showing altruism and generosity.
The book also reflects some Romanian outlooks on life (settling with what you have earned for now, aspirations don't really have to be followed) clashing with unconventional ways of thinking, by the end all the characters realising that dreams are worth being transformed into reality and that coming out of your confort zone is actually liberating.
There's even a bit of a love story sub-plot which I found very sweet, not at all complicated and for me it felt like a break from all the problematic scenarios I find in television or new books. It was simple and the kind I want to see more in media, it just adds some flavor but doesn't ruin the main story.
I don't know what to say more, but pirates! Thieves in boat ports! Skillful negotiations! Salty water! Traveling across the Atlantic on a boat with sails! The 1880s! Storms that turn ships upside down! Charles Darwin is actually a character! Spring in Brazil! Exploration, unknown, adventure! Zero (0) overused Romanian stereotypes!
Right now I am reading "All Sails Up!" the second time because the nostalgia was too upsetting. There's even a TV series which is generally stays true to the source material, very entertaining especially if you've read the novel.

I don't always read authors from my own country because I don't really like the themes that the books usually have. But this book, this giant, is great and I will always come back to it.
Finished rereading it last night and I loved it almost as much as the first time I read it, almost ten years ago. This time I saw some small details I didn't like, but overall it was an amazing reading experience and I caught myself smiling numerous times. I still love all the characters, Martin Stricland included, despite all the trouble he caused.
Unfortunately I had the TV series [ which I am absolutely going to rewatch for the nth time] stuck in my head so when I was getting closer to the ending of the book I had this nagging feeling that there was a big chunk of it missing :))) because it was in the TV series, but not in the book. I do however prefer the ending of the book as it leaves more room for imagination.

Poveste captivantă, plină de termeni marinărești (+1 pentru cultură generală și specializată), geografie și personaje morale. Povestea de dragoste a fost un pic molâie, iar faptul că scriitorul avea anumite pasaje în care spunea dinainte ce o să se întâmple a fost destul de agasant.

DUPA DOUĂ LUNI JUMATE AM TERMINAT ȘI EU TOATE PÂNZELE SUS
ritmul acesta încet de citit se datorează în egală măsură programului meu încărcat și felului de a scrie a autorului.. prima parte a cărții a mers cel mai greu, trecuseră câteva sute de pagini și încă "Speranța" nici nu plecase
Dar câte s-au întâmplat!! A fost o adevărată aventură, am cunoscut personaje complexe, cu valori profunde, am înfruntat alături de echipajul "Speranței" nenumăratele provocări și, in final, m-am ales și cu câteva deprinderi marinărești.. cum nu, când mi s-a descris în amănunt structura vasului, de la prima scandura până la catarg și vele.. și apoi am luat parte la rutina zilnică a marinarilor, i-am însoțit la fiecare cart, și am învățat odată cu Mihu să calculez viteza unui vas, să măsor locul în care se afla un astru pe bolta cerului..
Deși m-a incetinit enorm și n-am putut sa o iau nicăieri cu mine (la cât de groasă e!), consider ca toata lumea ar trebui, neapărat, să citească aceasta carte. Te îmbogățește, e o călătorie plină de adrenalină, umor, spaime, taine, primejdii și, mai ales, valoarea omeniei, care le biruie pe toate celălalte!

O carte care se poate citi și la 14 ani dar și la 30. Radu Tudoran este unul dintre singurii autori români care a reușit să scrie, nu știu cum s-a întâmplat, un roman autentic de aventuri. O carte care se încadrează în literatura universală, înainte de cea română. Comparabilă cu ,, Căpitan la 15 ani" și cu ,,Tai-Pan" ca stil. Un manual de navigație. Comparabilă și cu ,,Moby Dick". Totuși, autorul pare prea fantezist în legătură cu unele episoade (expediția din Țara de Foc, civilizarea alcalufilor, denumirile prea românești pe care membrii echipajului le dau unor locuri, construcția forțată a unor personaje). Romanul este dominat de niște modele de construcție caracteristice romantismului și nu scapă pe alocuri de ecouri din Miorița, Sadoveanu sau Vasile Voiculescu, fapt care ne duce cu gândul la o recuperare în stil postmodern a unor valori. Radu Tudoran este un autor dibaci, ca un cârmaci, reușind să mântuiască abil așteptările cititorilor, prezentând gradual viața de pe mare, reușind să iasă din temele scrisului tradițional românesc. Romanul său nu este unul de salon, ci un best-seller.

Toate panzele sus este o carte greu de citit, cu un numar mare de pagini, dar evenimente pe atat de interesante. Cartea aceasta m-a trecut prin multe emotii: de la gasirea prietenului pierdut al lui Anton Lupan, Pierre Vaillant pana la aventurile din Țara de Foc. Trebuie sa recunosc, ca intr-un final, ce m-a atras la carte au fost schimbarile de situatie neasteptate, dar si ingeniozitatea lui Anton Lupan.
Cum am zis, cartea a fost un carusel de emotii, iar relatia stransa dintre Pierre Vaillant si Anton Lupan m-a facut sa simt ce simtea Lupan, pe valurile oceanului si cu gandul la prietenul sau.
Dupa ce am citit cartea m-am interesat de istoria acesteia, un reper foarte important in acest caz. Chiar autorul, Radu Tudoran a trecut prin aventurile propriilor personaje. Din pricina restrictiilor din timpul comunismului acesta nu a reusit sa isi termine vasul, cu care voia sa parcurga acelasi drum ca Anton Lupan si Pierre: sa isi construiasca barca si sa plece prin toata lumea. De asemenea, era la un pas sa nu poata publica nici aceasta carte, deoarece era inadecvata regimului de atunci.
Recomand cartea, este una captivanta si plina de suspans, in ciuda numarului de pagini...
Cum am zis, cartea a fost un carusel de emotii, iar relatia stransa dintre Pierre Vaillant si Anton Lupan m-a facut sa simt ce simtea Lupan, pe valurile oceanului si cu gandul la prietenul sau.
Dupa ce am citit cartea m-am interesat de istoria acesteia, un reper foarte important in acest caz. Chiar autorul, Radu Tudoran a trecut prin aventurile propriilor personaje. Din pricina restrictiilor din timpul comunismului acesta nu a reusit sa isi termine vasul, cu care voia sa parcurga acelasi drum ca Anton Lupan si Pierre: sa isi construiasca barca si sa plece prin toata lumea. De asemenea, era la un pas sa nu poata publica nici aceasta carte, deoarece era inadecvata regimului de atunci.

Ok. Pe scurt: Mi-a plăcut cartea, deși alocuri a fost cam greoaie din cauza descrierii (hm-hm. Chiar am înțeles cum funcționează o corabie!). Personajele au fost chiar interesante și trebuie să spun că m-am atașat de Ismail... Am fost mulțumită cu finalul, chiar cred ca mi-a plăcut mult că te lasă să simti ca viața personajelor nu se va termina odată cu cartea. Încă sunt confuză de care e treaba cu Pierre Vaillant pentru ca pe o pagină crezi ca e mort, pe cealaltă apare o dovadă că e viu... Până la urmă, stiu ca are defecte, dar nu pot săi dau mai puțin de 5 stele deoarece m-am simțit bine citind-o.

A no from me. Personajele au fost surprinzător de bine construite, asta mi-a plăcut la carte. Deși acțiunea nu a fost cea care m-a intrigat, personajele au fost cele care mi-au stârnit curiozitatea. Greu de citit. Asta se poate datora anului in care a fost scrisă sau faptului ca nu sunt obișnuita cu genul acesta de cărți. Întreaga carte a fost un du-te vino continuu. Finalul a fost cu siguranța un 📉. Exista un alt volum? Pentru ca asta da idee finalul, dar deși sunt curioasa dacă își va găsi prietenul, nu as mai citi și continuarea (dacă exista🌚). Voiam ca misterul sa se încheie in aceasta carte (asta era și marea mea curiozitate) și exact asta nu s-a întâmplat.

m a purtat peste mari, oceane, felurite țărmuri, mi a pus în fata o călătorie primejdioasa, înduioșătoare, visele, hotărârile și dorințele unor oameni alături de care am ras, am plâns și am văzut cum arata lumea acum mai bine de o suta de ani.

Nu pot spune decât că această carte este perfectă, una dintre preferatele mele! Am citit-o de doua ori, iar a doua oară am înțeles-o chiar mai bine. Recomand acest roman fantastic oricui! Dacă ziceți ca este prea lung și greu de citit, e vina voastră, nu a autorului sau a cărții, e vina voastră că sunteți delăsători și ca nu înțelegeți. Eu am reușit sa o citesc la 10 ani și am inteles-o, ba chiar am iubit-o. Dați-i o a doua șansă, dacă nu vă prind primele pagini, continuați, s-ar putea sa va placă!

Cand am început această carte vacanța mea abia a început si nu eram prea interesat atunci cand citeam introducerea ei. Dar, totuși, am continuat mai mult ca sa îmi pun inca o carte citita în lista mea. Pe măsură ce citeam cate o aventura ma fascina din ce in ce mai mult si nu puteam sa las cartea din mana. Mi-au plăcut foarte mult aventurile care au fost destul de interesante si recomand aceasta carte generației mele deoarece sigur nu vor regreta pentru ca au ce învăța!

e pentru liceu si mi s a parut destul de buna dar foarte multa descriere de asta am dat 4 stelute. pot spune ca am stat mai toata cartea sa aflu daca prietenul asta pierre traia aau nu si nici macar la final nu stim sigur gen voiam sa vad revederea si ca anton asta sa i spuna ca el a reusit sa ajunga acolo in tara de foc dar nu s a putut 😔

Pentru mine aceasta carte a reușit nu doar sa ma simt ca o parte din echipaj dar a ajuns sa am emoții de fiecare dată când aceștia au problema (aproape am plâns citind scena în care Ismail este împușcat).Printre puținele cărți care m-a făcut sa îmi pese asa mult de personaj .Recomand toate cele 900 de pagini oricui simte nevoie de o aventură
