Alexandria Dumont is a doctor of rehabilitation medicine working long hours at Regional Hospital as she finishes her residency. Lately, she hasn’t had much time for a life. Her one treat is going to the flea market.
When she buys a portrait of an old Southern Plantation, she can’t get over how intriguing the picture is. It is a beautiful plantation surrounded by live oaks draped in Spanish moss, but the reflection in the lake doesn’t show its grandeur. It reflects a home burned to the ground. When she moves the portrait, a child’s diary falls upon the bed and Alexandria begins to read.
The next morning when she finds herself in 1835 she figures she has finally gone off the deep end. Nothing makes sense. Alexandria is unsure why she has fallen back to 1835 until she meets a crippled child she knows she can help walk again. However convincing the child’s brother, the arrogant Brad Wentworth, who hates doctors, that she can help his sister to walk again might be the biggest task that she has ever encountered.
As Alexandria sets about her task, she finds River Bends Plantation holds many secrets. Finding the answers to those secrets just may cost her . . . her life.
Brenda Jernigan is a bestselling author. Her books have been nominated for many awards - Book Seller’s Best Award, The Maggie Award, and The Holt Medallion Award. Publisher’s Weekly said, “Brenda Jernigan writes Romance, Adventure and Magic”
She grew up living the life of a tomboy – climbing trees, playing ball, and excluding starry-eyed romance from her daily repertoire. Brenda discovered the love of books while taking her son to Story Hour at the local library -- she was hooked. She set an ambitious goal and began work on her first novel. She continued to write six more novels in rapid succession. She figured having the same birthday as Ernest Hemingway couldn’t hurt.
Her books have been printed in several languages and her last book “Southern Seduction” written under the name of Alexandria Scott was printed in Russian. Web Page - www.brendajbooks.com
***** FIVE STARS! A little magic, a lot of suspense with some drama thrown in for good measure, and romance...what more could one want in a Time Travel Romance? Okay, let's toss some in a villain or two that readers cannot help but love to hate. This story has it all. Brenda Jernigan has written a compelling tale that hooked my interest instantly and refused to let go until the story was over. Alex's sojourn to 1835 was vividly detailed and stayed true to the time period. Julia's character seems to ooze evil at times. I looked forward to seeing her get what she deserved. And Brad's character could never be conceited while Alexandria was around. Alex is a strong character, independent, and has an indomitable spirit. Ms. Jernigan is a pro when it comes to foreshadowing ominous events and I found myself riveted by the mysterious Hattie and the enchanted with little Missy. The name of Brenda Jernigan is simply another way to pronounce the word "Rhapsody". Marvelous! *****
I was thoroughly annoyed by how much of a pushover the heroine was, and how much of a scoundrel the 'hero' was. I have no tolerance for cheating heroes, and not only did Brad cheat on Alex with random tavern waitresses and who knows how many other women, but he was semi-engaged to another women the whole time, so he was really cheating on her with Alex.
In the beginning of the book, Alex is this empowered, outspoken 21st century doctor who speaks her mind and isn't intimidated by anyone. But pretty quickly she transforms into this mousy little thing that lets men walk all over her. She even let Brad pop up with a surprise wedding, where he says "I Do" for her, and she doesn't object to anything! He is so overbearing it is ridiculous. I ended up skimming to the end of the book because I didn't like any of the characters and was frustrated with the whole situation.
And the ending was the worst. It was a complete jumble of half-finished thoughts, and feels extremely rushed. It was very confusing, and did not explain what happened.
I enjoyed the book for the most part until I got close to the ending. In some books writers choose to rush the end to finish up their book, this is one of such books. Other then that, the story development was pretty strong. One of the main characters started out very strong but quickly turned into a pushover, that's one of the things I wasn't quite ok with.
I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads.
What a wonderful time slip novel!!!! The story is mesmerizing. Alexandria, a trained doctor buys a painting of a southern plantation in a flea market. She finds a slim in the back of the frame and is suddenly transported back to River Bends plantation in 1835. There she finds the woman who sold her the painting, the love of her life and Julia, a woman with no conscience. I really adored this book!
I love time travel books and this one was great. Alex who lives in 1980 is a Doctor. She grew up without any family and yearns to be loved. She is transported back in time to 1835 where she meets and clashes with Brad Wentworth. She believes she is here to help his little sister Melissa walk again, but she's also there for other reasons. Let's travel back in time where women were chaperoned and did what they were told. A great read!!!
This is a great read. Fast paced great story, strong heroine and hero. Lots of dialogue Between all the characters, Which I prefer rather than just reading characters thoughts. Plenty of steamy romance. If you like time travel romance you will definitely like this book I highly recommend it.
