The historical survey is impressive for the level of detail and the richness in descriptions.
It addresses, in an objective way, all social, economic and cultural aspects of Ottoman culture and superficially other cultures.
However, despite being a rich source of information, I believe that some points could have been further developed, such as: A more critical approach of controversial facts such as the Armenian question and how the different cultures related during the empire.
Some picturesque aspects could have been explored: status of the harem, partition of Jerusalem, eunuchs, etc. .
Some questions: use of the word Turkish. At first explained to any peasant and then used in general to the empire, and the name of the city of Constantinople: the city was only officially called Istanbul from 1930.
Finally, as it can be seen that there was a lot of collaboration from Turkish institutions in the preparation of the book, almost no controversy was raised which would have been an important counterpoint for a more accurate view of the Ottoman regime.
Too bad I didn't read this book before my trip to Istanbul.
