Leslie Langtry is a USA Today Bestselling Author of the Merry Wrath Mysteries and the Bombay Family of Assassins Greatest Hits series. She lives in the Midwest with her family and is an active Girl Scout volunteer. Her dream is to someday invent calorie free cake.
By far my least favorite of the series so far. While I like the concept, the actual story lines were a little far fetched. Easy read though and gives some back story to the Bombay’s.
I am a huge fan of the Greatest Hits series by Leslie Langtry. Heck, I was reading the books before the series was called "Greatest Hits". Tifferz and I would talk for hours on end about these amazing books and how they are the perfect combination of murder, mayhem, comedy, and romance. Needless to say I was excited for this latest release and the opportunity to review it.
'Snuff the Magic Dragon' is different from the previous books in the series as it isn't a novel following the escapades of a single member of the Bombay family. Instead, this book is a series of short stories chronicling specific "assignments" of various members of the Bombay family over several thousand years. Because of the format, I missed the character development and added depth that you get from a novel. This book gave me a glimpse into the lives of several Bombays, but I didn't really get to know any of them as I would have preferred. That's my preference though. Given the format, it was fun to learn about the long history of the Bombay family, how they got started in the assassination business, how the island of Santa Muerta came to be, along with the family's role in famous deaths throughout history :)
I would also say that while the stories were enjoyable, I didn't appreciate the crass language, I don't recall the language being like this in previous books. Along with that, even though the stories took place hundreds, if not thousands of years in the past, they all read as modern stories - which may be what Ms. Langtry was going for as the subtitle indicates these are 'Bombay Family Bedtime Stories'. But I wouldn't use that kind of language when telling my child a bedtime story - and I don't think the Bombays necessarily would either. Perhaps I'm wrong - maybe the Bombays teach their children "adult" language when they train them to be assassins :/
Setting my personal biases aside, I am grateful that Ms. Langtry has continued the 'Greatest Hits' series and that she is even trying different formats and styles. She does have a holiday short story coming out entitled 'Four Mocking Birds' - it sounds promising! I hope that we will continue to get more stories about the Bombays, but I do hope that there will be more novels as in the past so that I can get to know and love more of the Bombay Family:)
FYI: Received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoy Leslie Langtry's writing, and her Bombay family series is a lot of fun to read. You'd think that a series about a family of assassins would be emotionally heavy reading, but it's not. These books are a treat for me, and I find myself picking them up when I need to read something that will leave me smiling.
Snuff the Magic Dragon is a collection of short stories about the Bombay family. Each story tells one family member's history, and details one of their more memorable "jobs." I liked that the stories were historical. The fact that the Bombay family's roots go back to Ancient Greece was mentioned several times in the series, and I was happy to read about the origination of the family business.
I love Langtry's writing. It's clean, with no overly descriptive prose. Her characters are all pretty level-headed and have no-nonsense personalities. I love that! Each story is told in the first person point of view. I love a first-person narrative, but initially thought it could be confusing for a collection of short stories, since each chapter started with a new character, but it ended up being perfect for this book.
My one complaint about Snuff the Magic Dragon was that because each short story was so short, there wasn't a lot of depth to the book. However, this book was a lot of fun to read, and I thought it was a great addition to the series. If you're new to Leslie Langtry's writing, start with her first Bombaby assassins book: 'Scuse Me While I Kill This Guy.
A great addition to the Bombay Family books! It's a collection of short stories about the ancestors of the main characters in the series. Very entertaining! This book could be read at any place in the series. In fact, I read it first, before the rest of the series, and I'm glad I did!
LOVE this series! I liked reading about how the Bombay family got started. Now it reads like it is happening today with some of the language (no olde english) but I don't think that really mattered. Still funny!
Love Lesley langtrys books. Always fun filled with action and romance. Only negative would be they are too short. I could read about the Bombay family for a lot longer before having to wait for my next instalment,
The short stories from various Bombay ancestors are amusing. Entertaining, and well worth the brief read. Who would have thought that the first hanging in America or the death of Rasputin involved the Bombays?
What fun stories. Loved the history, hopping from character to character, and the fun twists I didn't see coming. Enjoyed the entire Bombay series, and this was a lovely addition to the collection.
Great short stories about my favorite family of hitmen! Hope there's a new full length novel in the works, or at least many more of these short stories!
