The Witch and the Gentleman (Witches, Book 1)
by J. R. Rain
The main character in this book is well known to fans of Rain's Samantha Moon fans, as the character is one of Samantha's few friends, Allison. As usual, Rain tells a good story, complete with lots of action, strange happenings, twists, and turns. NOTE: SPOILERS FOLLOWING.
I did not rate this book highly for two reasons. The first is the premise that someone as adept at dealing with the paranormal would not have noticed earlier in the story that the entity she is dealing with is a ghost.
But the larger reason is Rain's insistence on making the Abrahamic God a part of the Wiccan religion. Nope. Not a thing. I know that Rain comes from a Christian family, and that of late in his Vampire for Hire books he has been pushing religion, attempting to use his stories about a vampire as a religious discussion vehicle. But trying to marry the God of the Abrahamic religions (Jewish, Christian, Muslim) to the pagan religion of Wicca is off the charts ridiculous. But there it was, with a Wicca "Spirit" (as opposed to ghost) stating that Wiccans accept the Abrahamic God as the great creator, and managing to throw even Gaia into the mix. First, believers in the Abrahamic God would not believe in Wiccan gods and goddesses, such as Gaia. Second, believers in Wicca would not believe in the Abrahamic God. Trying to mesh these beliefs into one happy family grouping makes, or should make, believers in any religion. Abrahamic or Pagan, roll their eyes.
So, even though I like the character, I won't be reading more of the Witches series.
