Crash and Burn #3

The Art of Dying

Rate this book
A beautifully crafted contemporary romance from #1 New York Times bestselling author Jamie McGuire.

Karen “Mack” Mackenzie is just beginning to live again after her nightmarish relationship with Mason Hughes, one that left her far from home and carving a path forward while looking over her shoulder. Now residing in the Boston suburb of Quincy, her southern sass sets her apart, instantly drawing the attention of local hometown hero, Terrell Kitsch.

A Marine Second Lieutenant on a thirty-day leave, Kitsch has returned to Massachusetts to breathe new life into his childhood home. A few days after his arrival, he manages to fall hopelessly in love with the first girl to slap some sense into him. Just a month later, he must report to his station at Camp Pendleton. Unable to live with the thought of leaving Mack behind when her past could catch up with her at any moment, a proposal is on the tip of his tongue.

An impulsive wedding leads to a marriage that defies odds, as Kitsch and Mack navigate his assignment to a special operations unit. His job was to live to fight another day. But the real war begins when a shadow from Mack’s past darkens their doorstep, and Kitsch is faced with the agonizing task of protecting his family in the only way he can to ensure their safety.

This enthralling love story spans two decades, captivating readers with unrepentant sacrifice, relentless suspense, undeniable passion, and unwavering loyalty and trust, one that survives fear, distance—and even death.

This book is about Kitsch and his wife, Karen "Mack" Mackenzie. This was hinted at in the extra chapter at the back of The Edge of Us. It's book 3 in the Crash and Burn series but can be read as a standalone. It's highly recommended you read the first two books in the series first. Similarly the Crash and Burn series is a spinoff of the Maddox Brothers series which in turn is a spinoff of the Beautiful series. However it isn't absolutely necessary to read the other two series before reading this series to understand.

Actual rating: 4.80 rounded up. Best book in the series so far.

Meet our hero Kitsch:

Art by digitaldesignsbysunshine on Jamie's official social media. There's no art for Mack but she has copper hair and green eyes. I will update the review if the auhor commissions art for her too.

I think Kitsch and Mack were a great couple. The healthiest relationship Jamie has written so far. This book is so different from the others in the Beautiful Disaster Universe because this time the conflict doesn't come from the actual couple themselves. They get along. They don't fight. They aren't looking for third parties or unsure of their feelings. They are basically soulmates.

The next portion of the review contains spoiler.

The conflict this time comes from Mason (Mack's psycho stalker and ex-boyfriend) and the Russian mafia, Yakuza and Sudan government plotline. I thought this was interesting and nice for a change. You can tell the augor took the time to do research because it all seems plausible and auyentic. The book also spans 20 years starting back in 2002 and ending somewhere in 2022. I like how this is marked by days through out the book. And how Mack's name is striked when she becomes "Karen". It's the little details.

I like that we got to see the past of beloved characters from previous books even those who have passed like Matt. It was heartbreaking. I also teared up about Kepner and Grant.

The book kept me on my toes. Mason barely appears in the book but his threat is always there looming. He was always plotting and succeeding in hurting Mack indirectly in his sick twisted game by hurting her found family. I would like to know if Drew survived and if him and Alecia got back together if he's alive. I hope they went back for Dorito 😭

We got Maddox Brothers cameos as expected. There was a fourth book in the series announced. The author hasn't said when it will be published. We don't know the main characters but if Harbinger, Sloan and Martinez are all getting a book (the other three in the military group got their own book) my guess is that Harbinger and his wife Caroline are next. This book definitely made me curious about them.

I really enjoyed this series, even though it is a 3 book series you would enjoy it more if you read her earlier book series as the characters from those series make appearances in these.

My goodness. No lie it too me weeks to finish this book. I would pick it up, set it down and do it again. This is the best book yet! It pulled on all the heart strings, it was hard for me to continue not knowing if there would be a happily ever after. The title made me feel like a happily ever wasn't going to happen. So many tears and laughs along the way. This is definitely a must read. I'm so glad I picked it back up and finished. This book is a must read!

Different but still great

This book is different from the other two books in this series. This book was more suspenseful and lots of drama. The book starts with Kitcsh meeting the love of his life, even though Mack didn't know it yet. He was back home on leave to wrap up some things before reporting to duty for the Marines when he spots Mack for the first time. Mack is trying to move on from an abusive ex when she meets Kitsch and just knows she is safe with him. They have a limited amount of time before Kitsch has to leave. They are able to make things work until creepy things start happening. Things keep getting worse until life sacrifices are made. I loved how it gave the background to Trex and Naomi's stories. The backstory relating to Naomi was heartbreaking. There were other twists that I did not see coming and were emotional. I liked the ending but I just didn't want it to end.

Another amazing installment to the Crash and Burn series! This story of Kitsch and Mack was so needed. I lived every second, even the parts that made me cry. The hard scenes were beautifully written, the characters are true to their original personalities, the book is packed with action and suspense and heartfelt romance and may actually be my favorite in this series- yes, even over Trex and Naoimi's stories, which I adore!
Definitely recommend!

She did it again.

Reading to me is an escape from reality, a vacation when I can't go anywhere. I love being lost in a book, and 9 times out of 10, one of Jamie McGuire books will do it. This one was one of those. I expected to go into this getting to know Kitsch better and more about his family that he lost and how he couldn't except that they were gone, and to be completely heartbroken because I knew I would fall in love with Mack and their love story. Falling in love with their love story for sure happened. I didn't expect it to end the way it did but couldn't have been happier. I kept waiting for the devastation of an actual loss. There was the loss of Matt. You got to know a little more about Matt and Naomi and realize that so much of everyone's stories have to do with one twisted, twisted psycho named Mason. This book had me on my toes, and I would literally scream out loud, laugh out loud, and even cry. Tho it did not make me boohoo like Beautiful Funeral. If you haven't read the Maddox brother series, I HIGHLY suggest it. I highly suggest all of her books. Jamie McGuire doesn't make you question much. Like when you wonder what someone's story is a character in a book but not the main character. Chances are, if they are intriguing enough, there is already a book with that characters story. And if you have questions, another amazing thing is that Jamie will indeed answer back, and that is just totally amazing. She is for sure my favorite author because of her books and her commitment to fans. She also seems to be like a good person, regardless of what some people say. I know this is a long review, but I just really do have a lot of great things to say. Her books have helped me so much to escape when I couldn't get away!

This book was a lot

A lot of emotions: confusion, happiness, shock, sadness, disbelief, and other words I can think of after reading the book. Kitsch was a true good guy that Mack didn't think she deserved because of stuff in her past. There were a lot of years, drama, and things that happened to get them their happily ever after. Throughout the book I wondered why names sounded familiar and had to look back at the other books on my tablet in the Crash and Burn series. It had been so long that I read them that I had completely blanked and am glad to hear about their story from Kitsch's point of view. I almost wish I would have reread them before I read this one, but am also glad I didn't because I feel like it was a total different world in a lot of ways. I would not say you had to read the other books in this series first and they could be treated as standalones, but hearing about the Maddox brothers(from a different series) definitely brought a smile to my face. I went down a star because I had to frequently calculate how much time had passed and who the boys were because at one point there were a lot of them. I feel like this book took me on a whirlwind and I'm so glad I read it. I knew it would end okay but had to keep reading and was glad I did.

I loved this book!! Kitsch is such a sweetheart!! I really enjoyed how Jamie made the timeline span across several decades! It was really nice to see Kitsch and Mack meet and grow their relationship. It made you believe in love at first sight and when you meet your partner and just know!! I enjoyed that we got to know Kitsch before he joined the Marines and then we got to see him and the team interact and build their military family! I also enjoyed reading about the teams overseas operations and it broke my heart to read the actual scene when Matt died in the line of duty. That scene and those after were just gut wrenching. Especially seeing Naomi grieving but then being her bad ass self, ready to go! The entire book was very well done! I thoroughly enjoyed the amount of history and stories across the decades. It made me want to reread book one and book two again! Well done and very clever!!

Kitsch & Mack

I fell in love with this couple from their very first meeting & I cannot believe the relationship between these two. It makes me feel all the feels they had in this story. These two are a power couple in my eyes & their dynamics are so powerful. I feel so upset with how & why Mack went through the first part of her life the way she did with her ex Mason, then made it so much better after she met Kitsch, a unforgettable man that would do anything for her & with their two beautiful children Dylan & Emily.

I am so grateful that I was able to read this final & fantastic ending which has made me fall in love with Jamie's books all over again (I'm gonna read them all asap)

This has been my favorite book of hers since Beautiful Disaster. The story of kitsch and needing to protect his wife and kids, doing what he thought was the best idea from his wife's sketchy past.

Seeing the life of his wife and kids in hiding, while he acted like they were dead for their safety and the course of the years since her ex boyfriend went rouge with bad Russian.

The story of her keeping her kids safe in another state, another life, with a couple getting paid to help keep her safe.

After years of hiding, her ex and that mob dead, she was able to nervously come out of hiding and living her best life again with her husband and their group of best friends

A quick review of the series since I had reviewed the first book but not the second one:
From Here To You was great, The Edge Of Us was okay too, The Art Of Dying was...meh.
Basically, all the plots are the same, but with new characters.
The title of this one is really creative though, and it draws you into the story. It's only when you read it that you realize why it has this title - it's an important part of the plot.
For me, it was like reading the previous book all over again, but with a more creative twists to it, more intelligent and smart characters, but worse writing.
Yeah, the pace is so fast that your head starts spinning and it feels like there's a lot missing in between.
There's no character development, no journey. when do they get married? Where did the kids come from? How did they fall in love so quick?
I definitely prefered the previous two books, and I hope this one is the last in this series.

I love This story.

We meer a lot of new people and we als op have a lot of peolpe form the other serie or this serie.
I still have a lot of question now at the end of the book. Like how is Apple? And how is Drew and Alecia relationship? Is Drew in prision? Or the cat of kepner?

With this book you will want to know how It end and of the get their Happy Ever After but you don’t really want to end.

Can wait for the next book of Jamie McGuire.
Hope we see a 4th book of this serie soon. With a lot of Maddox Brothers and their Panters

be prepared to do absolutely nothing but get sucked into the life of Kitsch & Mack!

What can I say…..Aaaaaa, this was so good. I love that Jamie writes her books as stand alones but if you’ve read all of her books you catch glimpses and mentions of other
characters from other stories and it all just ties in perfectly.

I must say this, I’m a little mad at Jamie…..Trent Maddox was it for me, But now I’m sitting here feeling guilty because no one was EVER going to change my mind but Dammit Kitsch is working his way up there.

This story will take you on an emotional ride….

Alive again

Karen AKA Mack and Terrell AKA Kitsch met at a small town bar, hometown for him and newbie for her, having 30 days to get to know someone is what they have, with bumps in the road, and trust issues from a previous relationship she's skittish but they click, intrigue, suspense, love and hate, death and murder, friends and family, briefly getting to see the Maddox brother's, Liis Lindy again, long awaited return of special friends, exciting from beginning to the end, love and the good guys win in the end, absolutely love this story, thank you, Dana Zamora

Amazing!!

This is the 3rd book in this phenomenal series and what a great addition this story is.
This is a well written story which is an action packed emotional roller coaster, with family, friendships, danger, suspense, intrigue, humour, witty banter, loss, loyalty, challenges, heartbreak, and love which all leads to an entertaining, twisted, tragic, unpredictable, steamy, and thrilling addictive page turner which pulls at the heartstrings throughout.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

McGuire Magic Again

I don’t think there is a book that Jamie has written that I haven’t fallen in love with the characters. Mack & Kitsch have fallen into a top contender of favorite McGuire couple. This book had so many moments of gut wrenching scenes that left me wanting more and to know what happened next, followed by the most admirable love story. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next! ❤️

I was excited when I heard a third book was coming out.

I felt Mack and Kitsch were an enjoyable couple to read about. And I loved that it extended 15 years.

While this is the 3rd book in Crash and Burn. It actually takes place before the events of book 1 and 2. However it does spring you forward to put all the pieces together.

LOVE IT!

I have loved Jamie McGuire books since I read Beautiful Disaster 10 years ago and every single one just gets better. This book is no exception to that. I absolutely love Katsch and Mack’s story. This is a story I have needed since reading books 1 & 2 of the crash and burn series and Jamie didn’t let me down!!!

Can’t wait for the next book!

This book started slow. I wasn’t sure why these two got their own book… didn’t make sense based on the first two in the series.

I wish I could give it more then 5 stars! I will say I am glad I read the series in order bc it’s the reason this book was so good!

Mack is a beast of a wife. I could never have had the strength to start over like that.

Loved it!

I may he biased because I've loved all of Jamie's work but this was a great read! I absolutely loved that all of the books intermingled together! I also love when past characters make appearances, it makes it seem like their story's aren't over and we get a little glimpse of the happily every after we all wish to read. This story was refreshingly different! 10/10!!

Jamie NEVER disappoints! I'm always sucked into every book from the very beginning to the very end! Another reason why she is my favorite author of all times! Even though my heart broke for Mack and Kitsch, and the hate and total unbelievable Mason. Was such a great story! I also enjoy seeing other characters from my other favorite books! Love how they all come together.

Rounded up. This was so far fetched! To be a stalker for that many decades is ridiculous! There are so many things wrong with the direction she took this story. No, this wasn’t your best book yet. I’ll be real hesitant to read another if you write it.
