Sam Crescent is passionate about fiction. She loves a good erotic romance and so it only made sense for her to spread her wings and start writing. She began writing in 2009 and finally got that first acceptance in 2011 by Total-E-Bound.
She loved creating new characters and delving into the worlds that she creates. When she’s not panicking about a story or arguing with a character, she can be found in her kitchen creating all kinds of havoc. Like her stories the creations in the kitchen can be just as dubious but sometimes things turn out great.

I’m a sucker for a rejected mate story, but this isn’t one. There’s the one scene told in the blurb where “Brandon pretends another is his mate” but it’s not really a rejection, and it’s sorted out very quickly.

Brandon is the alpha and possesses a bit of a condescending attitude towards humans. Jokes on him because his mate happens to be a human. I’ll admit, I don’t love the shifter/human couple dynamic. I tend to grow impatient waiting for the human to get with the program.

The h was such a bore that I forgot her name… was a dud. Her personality was being stubborn and hesitant, that was it. Brandon was bossy... and kind of dumb. I wasn't impressed with either.

There’re huge chunks with little going on and the OW drama was very uneventful There’s a teeny bit of mystery at the end but nothing is resolved.

Bottom Line- I didn’t like this. It’s the first book, but the beginning was jarring. It might be a spinoff, but there’s virtually no introduction/world building. I felt like we were just dropped into the middle of the story with a ton of characters. There’s no chemistry between the mc’s and little plot.

NOT FOR ME

Brandon is the alpha of his pack and has total control over the small town where he lives with his pack alongside the human occupants whom he also controls. Brandon has no time for the humans he sees them as weak and inferior to his kind.
But then fate plays a nasty trick on him and decrees that his mate is a human woman.

Elle is 21 and is shy and reserved. When Brandon claims her without speaking a single word but just biting her wrist, she's shocked and afraid. Brandon slowly but surely invades her life and dictates her every move. Elle seems to be happy enough to go along with this even though she senses that Brandon isn't entirely happy to have her as his life partner. So when visitors arrive for the annual meeting to keep the peace between all the otherworld creatures Brandon presents a female member of his pack to say she's his mate Elle is heartbroken.

I am very sorry but I just didn't buy into Brandon and Elle's relationship at all. He's a completely arrogant arse and she's totally weak.
Not my favourite read by this author. She can and does much better.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Sam Crescent is an author that I admire and enjoy. So it really grieves me to have to write a less than favorable review of her newest book, The Alpha Takes a Mate. I liked the general storyline and Ms. Crescent’s writing flows easily. However, I felt no connection to either the hero or heroine and even preferred some of the secondary characters to Brandon and Elle.

Brandon is the alpha werewolf of the Northern Forest Pack and alphas tend to be confident, take charge men. But there’s confident bordering on arrogance, and then there’s arrogant bordering on a##hole. Brandon definitely fit the latter. In fact, he is somewhat of a Neanderthal who doesn’t believe that humans warrant much respect. Unfortunately he ends up with a human as a mate and from the moment he senses her, he ceases to be concerned about her thoughts and feelings. He has his pack mates grab her, he painfully bites her wrist to mark her, and then he drags out of the diner where she works and takes over her life. He might as well have clubbed Elle on the head.

Elle is young, having only just turned 21. While she is aware of werewolves and the concept of mating, she seems immature and unaware of the customs of the shifters. She allows Brandon to take over her life, take her virtue and then lie to his pack and other paranormal beings. Elle is hurt and humiliated but she doesn’t stand up to Brandon.

There is also a side storyline in The Alpha Takes a Mate of a possible threat from Elle’s past, but it is over so quickly and barely explained that it is easy to overlook. In addition, Brandon receives punishment from his pack for his lies about his mate but I did not find the punishment redeemed his character at all. At least for me it didn’t. Finally, the sex scenes offered some heat, but without the emotional connection between the hero and heroine, the lovemaking just fell flat.

The Alpha Takes a Mate just never lived up to it’s potential. Ms. Crescent has many other great books that you should put on your to read list. I just wouldn’t put The Alpha Takes a Mate on that list.

READ UNTIL...

Hero is a man whore who rejects his mate!
And after he forces himself on her and everything...
Oh HELL NO!
I am done here.
NO WAY COULD I EVER FORGIVE THAT!
Nope and I am done with this.
I am so pissed a spent money on this.
description
Guess it cost to much to explain the situation to the heroine here!
Really!?
Why do this? I understand she is a waitress but she is not stupid.
I am so upset here.
I just wanted a better alpha hero who is all about loving his mate not f*cking around with her emotions.
Also, the fact that the other woman was his F*ck buddy made it even worst for me.

I may finish it someday...but for now I am too dishearten to continue.

Love itttt! :)

I like that the hero is very possessive but not a push over.
Though it has some ups and downs- It hooked me from the beginning but then kinda dragged on in the middle of the story... there were a lot of things going on.. werewolves, vampire, bear... witches etc.. it was a little overwhelming and wish the ending was longer as I feel everything was settled in the last few pages. Also the mystery behind Elle's past was a big disappointment... ugh.. I thought it was going to be a major OMG moment but it wasn't! grrr.

I love the epilogue though.. I think it was cute! ^^
Overall, despite my little rant I still love it! I can't wait for Layla's book!

Brandon is Alpha and in charge of Grace Hill, few humans are allowed their but all who live in Grace Hill know to keep the secret of the paranormal world. When Brandon finally scents his mate he is shocked that she is human but immediately stakes his claim. Elle has lived in Grace Hill since she was sixteen and loves it but doesn't like how the werewolf males treat the human woman, so she can't believe it when the alpha Brandon bites her one day while she's working at the dinner. Elle never thought her life could change more now that she will be claimed as Brandon's mate, but she can't help but feel that something is missing and that Brandon still thinks she isn't good enough for him.

Brandon always thought his mate would be strong and a werewolf now he can only think of keeping his frail human mate safe, and with all of the paranormal descending on Grace Hill Brandon makes the decision to keep Elle hidden and tell the others that his ex is his mate. When Elle finally decides to let her guard down and let Brandon claim her Elle thinks she may finally be happy till she finds out what Brandon has done. Brandon could never have guessed that his decision to keep Elle safe would cause Elle so much pain but it has and when the other paranormal creature find out Brandon's problems will just be getting started. Now Brandon will have to convince Elle of his love and everyone else that he is still the right alpha for his pack, and if thats not enough Brandon and Elle will both learn that Elle may be more important to Brandon and the pack than anyone could have ever guessed.

I love Sam Crescent I love her books and her characters, and this book was no exception. Brandon was possessive and demanding and an all around Neanderthal. Elle wasn't a push over and knew she was worth love and respect, I also loved the side characters they were great additions to this book that I'm now invested in and want hea's for them all. With that all said I wish Brandon would have been put through the wringer more for what he did to Elle, I felt her pain and the packs pain and yes he pays for it I just would have liked him to have suffered more and for longer than he did. The same goes for Brandon's ex, I hated her and she gets it in the end but I wanted more to have happened to her(yeah I admit it I'm one of those girls who is out for blood when the h is wronger).

This was still a really really good book, and Sam didn't let me down. I've come to expect greatness from Sam Crescent and I love knowing she's an author I can turn to time and again for a great quick read. I can't wait to see where this story/series goes. I'm loving that Sam Crescent is branching out into new romance genres, and I'm finding that I love these books as much if not more than her typical erotic romance books. This is a great addition to PR genre and I highly recommend it for anyone who love Sam Crescent or who loves their hero's to be possessive and in control.

This was a huge DID NOT FINISH for me.

It's a pitty as this was my very first Sam Crescent book. I'm going to give this author a second chance as I've heard great things.

I was so offended by the "hero" Brandon I just couldn't continue reading. Typically when I read shifter romances, I either fall for the hero right away, or pretty quickly ;-)

If he has any less-than-loving intentions towards the heroinne, usually I can see his redemption a mile a way and can accept his initial short-comings because of that. I know I am going to fall for the hero anyway...

Well, not this time... this time, the hero was douchebaggery-on-a-stick and I couldn't stand it. I have too many books and too little time to wait it out and see if he became the hero I like to read about.

Sorry, this was a huge miss for me.

This book has a great spin. Werewolves are not allowed to take a mate until they are 21. There is just something about that number and it seems to work out for everyone.

Well that is a whole new thing when you talk about Elle. She has tried her best to stay out of the alpha’s way and do her job. She thinks about moving to the city and get away from everything if only her friend would come with her. She even skipped the 21 birthday party that the pack has for everyone. She was just at work one day when she is jerked out of the kitchen to go and see the Alpha. Imagine her surprise when he moves so fast, says that she is his and bites her.

Brandon doesn’t think he will ever see his mate and have the love that other couples in the pack has. He has a woman that wants to marry him but he only wants her for one thing and she doesn’t make his life easy. Brandon can’t believe that when he is just in the same restaurant that he suddenly scents his mate and it turns out to be Elle. Seems he had felt something when she was 16, when she first came to town.

I love and enjoy every book that this author writes. I will have to say that she is one of my favorite authors. When she writes there is just some magic that she puts in her writing that makes me want to read everything by her and then start all over. This story just seemed so real to me and I didn’t want it to end. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.

If you love books about Alpha males that thinks they know how to handle everything and then find out that they are wrong and admit it then this is the book for you. The love between these two was slow but it needed to be. Neither really knew their true feelings or what the other thought. I will say that there are some vampires and witches in this story.

I hated this book. I don’t know why I finished it but it was written terribly, there were multiple spelling errors, half of the time the writing didn’t even make sense and the story was choppy and slapped together. Do not read again.

Brandon es un gran testarudo que juzgó mucho a Elle y solo la veía como una "débil humana" y por eso según el no podía estar a su lado en momentos importantes de la manada 😐. CHICO NECESITAS UN CAMBIO DE PENSAMIENTOS

I loved this book!

Yes Brandon was hard to like, but he redeemed himself.

I love Elle! She isn’t weak and submissive. She gives as good as she takes.

And I love Layla as her best friend, she is the FMC in the second book.

Brandon and Elle.

Very rarelyt do I find a book that goes against everything I know about paranormal/ shifter beings..this was a new one.

Brandon has found his mate and she's human. While he is ecstatic and marks her immediately, he is put off by the fact that she is human and to top it off, a meeting of all the various paranormal beings is set to begin soon. He can't parade a human in front of this group, but he also can't deny that she is his..or can he? Elle has grown up around the wolf shifters for years, but they are not "part" of the group. Humans are seen as a necessary nuisance but not actually "part" of the pack. When she finds out that she is the mate of the alpha, she doesn't believe it..even if her body says otherwise. She is not instantly ready to be claimed and even less ready to find herself as co-leader of a pack that doesn't think she's worthy. When she finally gives in to her mates advances, he tells everyone that another woman is his mate. Will she ever recover from his denial? Can Brandon make it up to her when she finds out his reason? Can Brandon and the pack keep her and her bestie safe with all of the other things that go bump in the night coming to town?

I enjoyed the story, but some things just getting stuck in my head. I couldn't believe that Brandon was trying to lie about his mate. That kind of thing is just not done. Elle seemed to go back and forth with wanting Brandon and then not. She was shy and hesitant one minute and then a wanton siren the next. The packs treatment of humans wasn't bad, just dismissive. The story is starting to evolve with the introduction of vampires, bears, witches and warlocks. There is so much more to come.

Great story mystery and intrigue, plus there is more books to come.

I've read 'Lash' by Sam and I really liked the book, so I decided to give her paranormal writing a shock and I was really pleased that I did, the book had what I loved in the things that make me love a book, drama, sex, an overbearing alpha who can't take the word no, and werewolves. Brandon really reminds me of a damn barbarian with no manners sometimes, "mine," Brandon said with a growl to his voice." He's crude, but in all honesty I found it kind of refreshing because while he's being crude he's being honest and he doesn't hide his feelings, wants, or expectations from Elle. "I'm not touching your ti*s, or cu**, Elle. I'm holding you in my arms. Don't you feel different with me close?" he asked." He's possessive and protective (or at the times he thinks he is) "not only did he think he could lay his hand on you, but he used another pregnant mate as a shield. This is my world, baby. I don't let any bas**** touch you." I praise Elle for having balls to stand up to Brandon, "I'm human. You went into the arms of another woman, Brandon. You chose Lori over me. Can you feel how painful that is? Can you imagine what it would be like if I went to another man?" She waited for her words to sink in. "I was a virgin because I hadn't found the one. I gave myself to you. I lowered down everything because you asked me to, and how do you repay me? You push me aside. Lewis showed more care last night. So, please, tell me of your superior feelings, Brandon. From where I'm standing, I know a hell of a lot more about feeling than you do." Brandon does know how to grovel and I liked that, "I'll never do it again. You're my woman, and I'll prove it to everyone, please, Elle."

2 and 1/5 stars rounding it to three.

A huge 'potential' for one kick-ass series..

Liked the general plot a LOT. Some elements felt really familiar.. like the 'coming-war-that-would-end-all' theme.. but here's the thing

Unfortunately, I felt that it dragged.. like I was more than halfway through and nothing major happened! And after the long wait, what took place felt like it was already predicted.. and eventually, she was only human!!

Crazy Lizzy reminded me a lot of Nix from the Immortals After Dark series. She was funny, though. Liked her the most between the characters lol.. also his posse were lovely! Loved their no BS approach. They were honest, good friends. More like brothers and that element was really really great in this book.. this is one of the few werewolves book where I feel the strong connection between the wolves... being a brotherhood and all.

The writing style was really good.. at least for me. It kept me reading and kept me interested. :)

Wanted more drama to be there at the scene where he rebuffs her and pretends that Lori was his mate.. wanted for her father (or, heck, her mother) to react more when he came barging into their house to claim "their" daughter as "His" mate!! Glad he got his punishment though, he had it coming.

Again, I feel that this series has a LOT of potential if played right ;)

A fine read and keeps me wanting more of it.

Good job!

Brandon, the Alpha of the Northern Forest Pack knows his mate is out there, he smelled her once but she was too young for what was coming. It wasn't as if Brandon idly waited, he scratched his itch up until the day he fins her again and then in a quick statement he bites her in front of everyone.

Elle Smith moved to Grace Hill with her parents when she was sixteen. She knows better than to get involved with the wolves and has safely kept her distance, until Brandon bites her. He won't back down about taking her for a mate and sets about earning her trust. But Brandon has a big get together about to happen and Elle is human, she couldn't possibly act as his mate in front of the other creatures so he uses a stand in, his ex. Elle is trying to adapt to her role as mate, but when she finds out that Brandon doesn't think she is worthy enough to stand by his side she is devastated.

3.99, the only problem I really had was that Brandon was kind of a jerk for a little too long. He has this young woman who is completely innocent and he is crass and insistent. I didn't expect him to do a complete personality change but he could have eased her fears a bit. Otherwise good story, would definitely check out more in series.

Well i don't know what to say... I had to give this 3 stars and i hate giving this rating because i really not only love but totally adore Sam's writing and the majority of her books.
The problem here is that i really couldn't connect with the main characters and it felt like they didn't have that hot, sizzling chemistry Sam used us with.
Brandon the H really stepped on my nerves, i really disliked him at some point in the book and i didn't agree with his poor bad choices.
As for Elle the h, God, i've actually disliked her since the beginning of the book and i don't even know to tell you why exactly.
The H and h had zero chemistry and that's why the book lost 1.5 stars also the other 0.5 was lost because of their personalities.
The story was decent, packed with interesting action and hot scenes. I loved the main Vampire, also that crazy witch.
Oh and i abaolutely love Brandon's friends and Elle's best friend so i want their stories A.S.A.P!

This was for me just ok. At times I felt that the flow was choppy and stilted. I did not really warm to either character and in fact liked some of the secondary characters more.
Basically Brandon is an arrogant bastard who uses a fair bit of crass language. He has no use or respect for humans but ends up mated to one. Elle is young, a bit immature, and ignorant of the customs of the were that she has lived around for the last five years, even though her father is extremely knowledgeable. She is not impressed to find herself the mate of the alpha. He makes some pretty stupid decisions and has to fix up his colossal mistakes before it somehow creates a war.
There are little details here and there that contradict themselves and as I'm a details person I find that incredibly annoying.
There is some heat to the sex scenes but I did not really get emotion from them...just the heat.

3.5* rating - After reading Lash I find that I am currently enjoying Sam Crescent but something seems to be missing from her plots. Sam has all the right ingredients to make these books amazing but there seems to be too many missing holes to her stories.

Another enjoyable read, I liked that Elle stood up to Brandon, wished there was more of a chase and romance to this story. They just fell in love after 2 days - really !!!!. I wanted more drama, a better explanation as to the coming trouble, more of what happened when all the species meet, who wanted to kill Elle & her mom, I just needed more from this book...

The secondary characters where very interesting and enjoyable I am looking forward to Layla's book. I hope it will be soon.

I really do love the gist of the book, but didn't care too much for the main male in this story. I actually found myself wondering how he was going to stick his foot in mouth next.

Brandon is an alpha a$$. He believes that humans are inferior to him and his wolves and honestly I just couldn't bring myself to like him. Even after mating Elle he still never gave her the chance to prove how strong she could be or to stand beside him during this time.

Elle is just as bad as Brandon in my opinion. Even after mating with Brandon she just goes off and cries instead of standing up for herself.

All in all the story line and plot was a great one, but I couldn't connect with the characters. However, I do hope that she will eventually continue with the rest of this series.

Another winner from Sam Crescent! I adore her shifters. The alpha, Brandon was very likeable even with being very dominant something that I find very rarely in paranormal romance books. It was a nice change to have an heroine that didn't immediately fall for the hero but took some romancing and work. Elle, the heroine knew what she wanted and it wasn't Brandon at least at first. There were quite a few twists and turns a long way. Including one that I never saw coming, lol.

Never turn your back on those you love

The declaration of a mate is fast in this story, but the build up to the HEA is a long glorious ride. What a great beginning of a new series! There are all those paranormal beings we love and the ones we love to hate. So many side characters just waiting to have their stories told and good ole Crazy Lizzy who seems the sort to gently wind her way through them all. I hope we get to see what became of everyone soon.

Very sweet read. I will be looking forward to Where Mrs Crescent will be taking this series. I loved all the characters in here and eventhough Brandon is a strong Alpha to his pack that made him go stupid in some things especially when it came to his mate. But in the end he made good and became the mate and alpha he had to be to both his pack and true mate. It left me wanting more

It's been awhile since I have disliked a hero more. He was simply unlikeable. From his use and snobbery of humans, to the weakness of the reasoning behind the betrayal. Gees it just wasn't an enjoyable read.

We get to know the hero but everybody else, both the heroine and supporting characters were vague and under developed.

I'm disappointed.

I found this interesting and different than other shifter stories. I enjoyed how all of the paranormals were banding together to stop an attack. Brandon was a little standoffish, but Elle really came through and proved to him that she was tougher than he thought. I am looking forward to the next book in the series!!
