Why did I subject myself to this torture of a series? There is a very intriguing mystery buried beneath this messy story but I have decided to abandon my curiosity and move on. Amanda Hocking could have just written one book but, instead, she chopped up the story into three books to get more bang for her buck.

A story, like a piece of chocolate, is still good even if it's poorly made. At least, that was how I see it. After this book though, I felt like I wasted my time. Oh well, at least chocolates still stand the test of time!

I'm not going to share the highlights of this book. In my opinion, there is none. With this rant, I mean review, I take full responsibility by acknowledging this part of my day to be entirely my fault. The book never begged me to read it in the first place!

(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley.)

“If Linnea ran away, you think that’s where she would be?” I looked up at her.
“Either at the lake, or trying to find it.” Mom nodded, her lips pressed into a grim line. “Assuming she isn’t dead, of course.”

I had hoped that this one would be better than the first, but unfortunately that was not the case.

I think Bryn possibly annoyed me even more in this book. Not only were her arguments childish and painful to even listen to, her constant ‘it wasn’t my fault; it was your fault’ just got really old. Stop complaining, stop trying to do everything your own way, stop ignoring every opinion other than your own, and stop trying to shift the blame, even when things are your fault! I have to say that in this book Bryn reminded me heavily of Rose from Vampire Academy; they were both protecting royalty, and they were both immature and petty.

“Linnea is alive, and she told me to come find her.”
He arched his eyebrow and folded his arms across his chest. “Did she happen to tell you where she was?
“No, not exactly,”

The storyline in this was about Bryn finding the missing queen, and a whole heap of other rubbish. I actually liked the story at the start, but Bryn’s behaviour irritated me, and as the story went along I found myself getting very irritated and very bored.
We got romance that was also a bit irritating (I’m not saying more on that).

“We both know that it can’t happen again.”

- Even he can't stand her!

The ending then left us with a cliff-hanger, and I hope that

I'm sure you guys have seen my rather lukewarm review to the first book of this series. I was disappointed that the trolls here looked and acted like humans, and I hated some of what Bryn did at the end of the book despite her strong and amazing drive and personality. However, even with all these complaints, I still enjoyed the first book and was nervous to start the second one, lest it be lackluster.

Well, my doubts were surely unfounded because I actually... loved this. O_O

This time around, Bryn and Kasper were sent to the Kingdom of Skojare (imagine all blue and ice and sapphires) to assist in the investigation regarding the Queen, Konstantin, and the shadows lurking in the arena of Troll politics. And man, would it be weird if I say that reading this felt like I was watching a suspenseful episode of Criminal Minds? You really feel the tension in the atmosphere as our heroine tries to make a sense of what's happening, as every where she turns, there are mysteries, secrets, and even more deadends; the suspense and discoveries are so well-placed and so subtle that I didn't feel like I was simply reading but that I was also trying to solve the puzzle right alongside her.

Pretty much me the whole time:
"I'm pretty sure this person is the culprit."

"No, wait, this innocent little act is kinda suspicious... yup, I'm calling it. IT'S THIS PERSON!"

"Shiz, I'm not sure now... okay, wait, wait... yeah, I definitely think that one's the suspect. I mean, seriously, this individual's behavior is shady!"

"You know what? Fuck it, I don't know anymore."

Yeah... my deducing skills right now is pretty much non-existent.

But seriously, the plot in Ice KissedFrostfire. It was simply more action-packed and full of court intrigue and possible conspiracies to keep your mind continuously working while reading, making you wonder what else is in store for us and the characters here. Plus, the ending makes you wanna go

And my gods, I love Bryn here. I kinda take back my complaints in the previous installment because the first thing she did as soon as they got back was tell the important information we saw her previously refraining from telling anybody. And after that, it was pretty much  kickass here and  kickass there , and  kickass everywhere If in Frostfire she was mildly annoying, here, she was awesome from head to toe. She used her wits, trusted her instincts, swept the guys off their feet with her melee moves, and she is just awesome. She wasn't recklessly impulsive, creating tension by doing stupid things. No, tension happened and then she acted accordingly. Each. Time.

Which is so refreshing. I want more kickass heroines like that.

I do wish there were more Ridley awesomeness, though. I really like him as a character and love interest. He was the type that didn't push or impose himself, was flawed and was emotional to a certain extent, and let things happen naturally. Hopefully in the next book? *puppy eyes*

Ice Kissed by Amanda Hocking
Book Two of the Kanin Chronicles
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Publication Date: May 5, 2015
Rating: 3 stars
Source: ARC sent by the publisher

Summary (from Goodreads):

Bryn Aven has always longed to be a part of her Kanin world. Though she has no social status because she’s a half-breed, she refuses to give up on her dream of serving the kingdom she loves. It’s a dream that brings her to a whole new realm…the glittering palace of the Skojare.

The Skojare people need protection from the same brutal rival who’s been threatening the Kanin. And being half Skojare herself, it’s a chance for Bryn to learn more about her heritage. Her boss Ridley Dresden is overseeing her mission and wants to help. He’s always been her most trusted friend—but as their undeniable attraction heats up, it’s a distraction she can’t afford. She’s about to discover that the Skojare world is full of secrets, and as she’s drawn in deeper, she doesn't know who to trust. And matters worse, as she gets closer to Ridley, she can’t even trust her own heart.

What I Liked:

Three-star reviews are so difficult to write. It's hard for me to articulate what went wrong, but at the same time, what worked, and how that balance had me feeling like this book deserved three stars, as opposed to two stars or four stars. I feel like there wasn't a ton of specific things that I didn't like in this book, but at the same time, there weren't a lot of things that stood out to me as amazing.

In this book, Bryn and Ridley come back from Skojare with no answers, and no queen Linnea. Prince Kennet sends them back to Doldastam. But the queen contacts Bryn, and Bryn and Ridley find her. Bryn and a member of the Hogdragen, Kasper, go back to Storvatten with the queen. There is something eerie about Storvatten, and something that dangerous is plaguing the city. Bryn wants to complete her mission and serve her kingdom as a Hogdragen, but she's slowly realizing that she has no idea what she wants, or who she can trust.

This book is a bit slow, in my opinion, and there are so many questions that still have yet to be answered. I was planning on reading the third book no matter what, so I hope the answers to my questions are in Crystal Kingdom. This book focuses on finding Queen Linnea, and once found, protecting her in Storvatten. Not the most interesting plot, and it did little to further the overall conflict of the series, in my opinion. I mean, sure, the ending is really explosive. But it took the whole book to work up to that ending! Which didn't really work for me.

So I thought the plot was a bit boring. One thing that did really work for me was the romance. No love triangle, as far as I can tell. Something huge shifts in Ridley and Bryn's relationship, and it's really crucial. We get to see a little bit more in terms of how much they mean to each other, and how far they would go to protect each other, as well as how far they would go with each other. I think Hocking won't throw a love triangle in the series at this point, which is a relief.

I like Bryn. She spends the whole book trying to redeem herself, after Konstantin Black and Viktor Dalig escaped while she was bleeding in a dungeon (at the end of Frostfire). She works hard to prove to everyone that she deserves to be a part of the Hogdragon, sworn to the royal family. But as this book goes on, Bryn realizes that maybe she doesn't want to serve and protect the kingdom. Maybe she isn't cut out morally for some of the decisions she will have to make. Bryn's inner conflict is a very well-developed part of this book, and I like that.

We really get a feel for the Skojare, and Storvatten. Bryn's mother's tribe is just as icy cold as we would expect them to be. Prince Kennet is flirtatious, but the King is like stone, even with his queen reunited with him. Storvatten is creepy, to be honest, but in a good way, I think.

I really like the ending. It isn't what I expected, the last thirty pages or so. It crept on me and I didn't see it coming. I mentioned that I didn't necessarily like this structure, but I like the ending itself. It's a slight cliffhanger ending for sure, but not heartbreaking or eyebrow-raising. It definitely sets the tone for Crystal Kingdom though. Which I will be reading in the future!

What I Did Not Like:

I have so many unanswered questions! I knew that, in Frostfire, not all the questions that I had throughout the book would be answered. And that's fine, because that was the first book in the series. But very few questions were answered in this book too! For example - we get almost no more information on Konstantin Black! What's his deal? Who is he working for? Why does he keep calling Bryn "white rabbit" like he knows her? And Viktor Dalig - what's his role in everything? I don't understand the "villains".

I also don't understand how anything in this particular book relates to the changeling issue. In Frostfire, it seemed like Konstantin Black took issue with the changeling system, and wanted to eliminate it. But no mention of anything changeling-related appeared in this book.

Basically, I'm finding that the overall series plot is very lacking. Konstantin Black's name is constantly being thrown around, but he isn't even in this book, and his role is still not made clear. Same wit Viktor Dalig. There is no progress in anything related to the changelings.

And of course, there is the fact that I keep forgetting that these creatures aren't human - they're TROLLS. It's so easy to forget this because there is little distinguishing between humans and the trolls. It was more of a big deal in the Trylle trilogy. But in this series, it's easy to forget that Bryn and the others are trolls. They seem human, but with different tribes. Like humans. Hocking really should do a better job of distinguishing troll characteristics in this book. Like, physical appearance, or plop in some Kanin abilities or something.

I also had this overall feeling of boredom and meh, which was sad. I really liked Frostfire! But this book seemed like a filler of a sort. I feel like you could take about 75% of the content in this book out, and divide the remaining 25% of the book between Frostfire and Crystal Kingdom, and just have a duology. I hate it when sequel/second novels are disappointing like that!

Mostly, I think I just expected more, and this book/Hocking came up short. But hopefully Crystal Kingdom will prove to be a stunning conclusion!

Would I Recommend It:

I'd recommend this one if you enjoyed Frostfire and want to continue with this series. If you haven't read Frostfire, hold off. Frostfire was really great, but I can see this series tunneling really quickly. I'm hoping it doesn't, like the Trylle trilogy. I really liked Switched/Torn/Ascend. Overall, the Trylle trilogy and Kanin Chronicles are great, but this book is my least favorite of the five.

Rating:

3 stars. Not the best book by Hocking, but not terrible enough to make me not want to read the third book. I just hope Crystal Kingdom doesn't disappoint! I remain optimistic.

After reading the first book in the series, I was disappointed and I still had lingering disappointment from that when I started reading this. So naturally I didn't expect much and in a way Ice Kissed surprised me. It started out really good and kept me hooked throughout.

I guess after accepting the fact that this is the Troll world I'm gonna get because that's what the author wanted to establish and nothing's gonna change that, I started to enjoy the story.

I already like Bryn even though she has many flaws but I do and Ridley has finally surpassed that margin from Bryn to become my favourite character in the series. I liked Kasper from the side characters the most. I also liked the fact that Bryn became a better friend in this. Also that we were shown a bit more of the characters from the first book.

That ending sure makes me want to read the next one.

I really enjoyed Frostfire but I still stand by my earlier review, I needed more romance, more action and more intrigue. Ice Kissed delivers this; thank god I carried on with this series!

Frostfire ended with Bryn discovering that the two most dangerous traitors of Kanin are working together but with still no leads on what their end goal is, the kingdom must plan for war. The darkness that has surrounded Kanin regarding Konstantin seems to have spread to Skojare. Bryn is sent to investigate and with the Queen of Skojare suddenly missing she assumes someone is after the throne and must ask fast before the kingdom falls to ruins.

I’m happy to say that Ice Kissed contained a lot more action and mystery. By mystery, I mean that everyone Bryn spoke to became an instant suspect, they all had something to gain and acted strange and refused to help in the investigation. Even without help Bryn is dangerously close to unveiling a secret between the troll kingdoms and finally discovering who is behind it all, as in Frosfire we have yet to discover who is pulling the strings. It was nice to have a more in depth look Skojare with it's magical palace immersed in water and the magic behind the kingdom.

I definitely liked Bryn a lot more in this, although I admired her strong mind when it came to her career, I don’t think she realised how much of her life she would have to give up. Whereas in this finally she was able to see things in a different light, no longer looking at her friends having children or getting married as being the end of their career but in fact the start or something more meaningful, she definitely grew up a lot and gained a better perspective.

The romance was turned up a notch, it was crazy hot with Ridley but I still wanted more, there was still only one or two moments. Bryn was obviously spending the majority of the book in Skojare so we didn’t see much of Ridley and despite my love for him he’s really an important character so I hope she gets more page time in the last installment.

So with the added action, romance and court politics I was very very impressed. I was much more engrossed in this book and trying my hardest to guess the villain and bigger plot involving Konstantin and Viktor Dålig. I was disappointed that we still don’t know what this great scheme is, it’s been two books now and surely we should have some hint at what’s going on? I can’t see any connection between kidnapping changelings and missing royalty, so I just wish we knew a little bit more but the ending of Ice Kissed has made sure that I will definitely be reading Crystal Kingdom whether I’d received the ARC or not, it’s shaped up to be an explosive ending. I would definitely urge readers who enjoyed Frostfire to carry on with series!

My...reading this book as if I'm reading a crime fiction book! Except the setting is in a fantasy world!

And what a plot twist! I love the plot twist. I don't expect it to end like it...

4 - "So, what do you say, white rabbit?" Stars!

Book two in the Kanin Chronicles literally picks up, where book one Frostfire finished. Bryn Aven, is still very much in the thick of things, and having returned from an unsuccessful trip to the capital of Skojare in search of their missing queen with Ridley Dresden, she throws herself back into her work as a tracker, and even more vehemently into her denial of her building feelings for Ridley.

”I… I wasn’t thinking.”

I must admit I am still struggling to like Bryn, I was on the fence at the end of the first book, but her pomposity, general arrogance with her peers and opinionated outbursts with pretty much everyone in Frostfire put her more in the annoying category than anything else. It is the actually story-line, writing style and the rest of the characters that are keeping me entertained if I am honest, but you get glimpses occasionally of a deep vulnerability in her, and it is just enough to keep me from totally disliking her.

A few things are revealed in this book, in relation to the story as a whole, while the Doldastam people prepare for war against Konstantin Black and his unknown supporters, Bryn is still not wholly convinced that he is actually the enemy, you are given tidbits of information that something a whole lot bigger is going on in this story and at the point where this book finishes, everything is still very much up in the air. The Skojare and Kanin people are definitely under threat, but who the actual enemy is, is still very much unknown.

Come find me…

Over and above Bryn’s personality issues, I am really enjoying this series. Ridley stepped up in this book, and made his presence known, I would have liked a little more of Konstantin, but that’s because I have a soft spot for a bad boy! The writing is easy to engage with, the story fast paced, and I am looking forward to seeing where the author takes Bryn in the next book of the series Crystal Kingdom, which is due in August 15.

“So, what do you say, white rabbit?” Konstantin asked. “Friends?”

Wow.This was really good.Bryn was even more kick ass in this one.I can sense a huge character development when it comes to her and Konstantin. This book is really action-packed,full of suspense & great revelations.I seriously love Bryn's friends Ember and Tilda, and Ridley is also amazing-such a great guy.And that ending...happy and sad at the same time. Can't wait to read the last book in the Kanin Chronicles.I have a feeling that it won't be a book with a happy ending.

I'm not freaking out...

Favourite quotes:

"It was in the fishbowl of the meeting room that everything went completely insane, and this was coming from someone who’d just been visited in a dream by Konstantin Black."

“This is Bayle’s meeting, isn’t it?” Kennet asked, looking over his shoulder at the large bronze clock hanging on the wall. “Doesn’t he know it’s rude to arrive late to your own party?”
When you arrived late to your own birthday party, you told me that was arriving in style,” Linnea reminded him.

In the majestic halls of a crystal palace lies a secret that could destroy an entire kingdom…

Bryn Aven refuses to give up on her dream of serving the kingdom she loves. It's a dream that brings her to a whole new realm…the glittering palace of the Skojare.

Ice Kissed starts off pretty much where Frostfire ended. Brynn and Ridley are reporting to the King and later Brynn has a vision sent to her from Queen Linnea telling her to find her. So off they go to find Queen Linnea, and that eventually leads Brynn right back to the Skojare palace. A huge complaint I have here is that it doesn't make any sense that they would bring her back to the place where she felt her life was threatened. It seemed like her disappearance happened for no good reason, even after we get the explanation as to why it still didn't make much sense. It just felt like a wild goose chase, and I mainly found the whole part of the novel spent in Storvatten pretty dull. Plus Queen Linnea is incredibly immature and kind of annoying.

Honestly nothing really happened in this book to advance the overall plot of the series. We get answers as to where Linnea is and why she disappeared and who was behind it, although as I said already it doesn't make much sense; the romantic aspect of the plot advances somewhat, however the love scene was something close to what you would find in a NA book and didn't belong in a YA book; Brynn grows a bit as a person and isn't a selfish jerk, but everything pertaining to the main plot line was pretty much already told to us in book one. It was obvious by things Konstantin Black had said to Brynn in book one, how things would end up in this book. And there were some pretty obvious clues as to who is behind everything, at least some of the who. And speaking of Konstantin Black, he was the most interesting character in book one and I was hoping to get more about him in this book. Unfortunately we get even less of him here. Mostly we just follow Brynn from place to place as she tries to get answers and she never really does until the end and it's nothing I didn't see coming, so it just felt like a waste of time.

I do find it impressive that the author was so successful as a self-published author which is what I guess led to a publisher picking up this series and another one that she wrote. I've never read any of her other works but I will say, compared to most YA fantasy I've read, this series is kind of shallow. I probably will not read the rest of the books in this series, because I think there is much better out there and I would rather spend my time on those.

I received I free copy of this from the publisher through a Goodreads giveaway.

Everything went to hell in nearly five seconds, BUT
"So, what do you say, white rabbit?" Konstantin asked. "Friends?"
YES! Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes!

I'm flying through this series, it's so good it hurts. Unfortunately this second book wasn't as good as the first one, but I liked it a lot nonetheless.
There's even more love and political intrigue, and damn it, I want to know what's happening. This suspense is killing me. Who the hell is behind all this??

Bryn is a fantastic character, she has flaws (like when she always thinks it's her fault: c'mon girl, the world doesn't spin around you!) but these make her real.
And finally Ridley and her had a serious talk. I was dying with the wait, especially after Bryn made some stupid decision .
I wanted to kill them, but at the same time I was crazy fangirling.
THE FEELS. Can't hold them.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Damn, the boys in these troll series are so cute and hot I can't even. How am I supposed to choose between Ridley and Konstantin now? Especially after what Ridley did and promised will do for Bryn. I hope Konstantin'll lift my feet off the ground like Loki did, so I can choose with my eyes closed ;D

The only thing I didn't like much was the central part of the book, with Bryn and Kasper in the Skojare kingdom. It was good with a lot of political intrigue, but it also was boring at traits. I began to know better Kasper, though. And I don't know if it's a good thing or not, because I came to love him,

If I hadn't had the last ebook on my eReader in the exact moment I had finished Ice Kissed, I think I would have died waiting for the last book to come out. The cliffhanger here is a MURDERER.
Bye, I'm going to drown in Crystal Kingdom.

A tangled web of lies, deception, traitors, betrayals, all spun around a fierce loyalty, honor, determination, with an utterly sweet, and crazy sexy romance, that will get your blood pumping and chills running. ICE KISSED was a great sequel that I've been highly anticipating.

Being back into the world of THE KANIN CHRONICLES, and reliving the journey and struggles these characters endure, reminded me just how much I missed this world and the adventures it holds. Bryn and Ridley are both absolutely my favorite characters in this series. I adored them as a couple, and was thrilled to finally see them let go and give in to each other and their long suppressed desires. And theirs one part, Chapter 15, page 101-104 to be exact, where I swooned and was actually amazed by the sex scene that Hocking's threw in there. It was definitely boarding on the line of YA, and New Adult. But hey, I didn't mind one bit, I actually thought it was refreshing to see YA authors border that line, and take the romance a little step further!! But it was definitely as hot as it can get for Young Adult!!

The plot, ugh, how do I say this without making it sound like I didn't like the book, because I did, I liked it a lot actually. But it did have some flaws, just like the first book did, and the reason I gave it four stars. It felt like the plot was kinda at a standstill until the last quarter or so of the book, that's when it really started picking up and went into full blown plot.

There was a lot of the plot that I thought could of been cut out, that it just dragged and stretched to make a full length novel. The outline of the plot was amazing, I loved the ideas Hocking had, it's just the execution, and the direction she took to get to the bigger picture is what I struggled with. Some parts were boring, where others were just mildly interesting, and some were full blown thrilling. And that made me have mixed feelings and it was really hard to connect to the novel.

But nevertheless, even with it's flaws I still did thoroughly enjoy ICE KISSED, and fell hard for the ending. And I have a feeling the next book, CRYSTAL KINGDOM is going to blow this series out of the water, and be as explosive as I hope it will be.

THE PLOT

Bryn Aven is finally being accepted into the Kanin world where she's always been an outcast. Fair skin, blond hair, and blue eyes have always set her apart from the other dark haired, olive skin Kanin. But Bryn's fine tracking skills, sharp instincts, and fierce determination have always gotten her through whatever obstacle she's challenged with. But being different from the rest of her tribe always pushed Bryn to fight harder, longer, and aim higher then the rest. And finally that eager determination payed off as it slowly drove her up the latter to where she is now known as an excellent tracker with a great record. But what Bryn really craves is to become an official member of the Kings Elite Guard, better known as the Högdragen. And she will do anything to prove her worth, to prove she is just as good as the rest, to prove they are all equal...

But all the training in the world couldn't of prepared Bryn Aven for what she's about to face...

After the incident that left her knocked out unconscious on the Skojare palace prison cell floor, Bryn Aven is feeling like a failure. Letting Doldastam's two most famous criminals, Viktor Dålig and Konstantin Black slip through her fingers is no easy feat. But with the fate of her kingdom hanging in the balance, Bryn won't be beaten down that easy. She's determined to get to the bottom of everything threatening to tear the troll kingdoms apart...

Eager to help and determined to find answers, Bryn finds herself back at the Skojare palace, picking up where she left off with the queens disappearance. But just as Bryn felt it last time she was in the sparkling Skojare palace, she feels it now too. Something here is amiss, something is not right with the Skojare people, their up to something, at least some of them are. And Bryn Aven has just dug herself into a conspiracy so deep, she may not be able to pull herself out, alive...

This book had it's ups and downs for me. On one hand I really enjoyed it, but on the other, I felt it lacked depth, lacked a real plot. I mean the bigger picture was there, but the path getting to the main purpose and outcome of the plot was lacking. If that makes any sense?

I guess I would say the plot was a little bland. I mean almost the whole book was focusing around protecting a juvenile queen that didn't have a backbone to save her life, and won't stand her ground when needed. And after a while it just got to be annoying, and I felt like screaming "Move on already, bring on some different drama, some purpose, some action," in which it definitely lacked until about the last quarter or so.

But nevertheless, even with it's faults, ICE KISSED was a good sequel that I did enjoy. Especially the one VERY hot romance scene with Ridley, in which I was thrilled to finally see them showing each other some real love!! I ship them so hard and really hope Hocking's doesn't decide to through a love triangle in the mix now with Konstantin Black coming back into the main plot of book three, because that would absolutely ruin it for me.

ICE KISSED end on an thrilling cliffhanger and I'm so eager to pick up the last book CRYSTAL KINGDOM and see how it all plays out. Because I have a feeling the next book will be an unforgettable conclusion that will put book two and three to shame...

Overall, ICE KISSED was an interesting sequel with it's faults, but also it's perks too. The ending alone was well worth reading the whole book just to get to it. I loved the characters and their fierce determination, and the romance was definitely hot too. Either way, ICE KISSED was a great addition to THE KANIN CHRONICLES, and I'm very excited to see how Hocking's will bring this series to a close, and all the struggles Bryn will have to endure to save her people. If you like fantasy with paranormal aspects, with low action and adventure, but with court intrigue, and mystery, topped with betrayals, lies , conspiracies, and a slow burning, HOT romance, then ICE KISSED may be right up your ally!!!

NOTE: I received a Physical ARC from St. Martin's Griffin for reviewing purposes. All opinions express are my own and are not influenced in any way.

We are once again thrust deep into the Trylle world with the story of Bryn Aven, a half breed that dreams of being an elite guard to the royalty.

Bryn takes it upon herself to find the missing queen only to find herself locked in the midst of vast political machinations.

Byrn spends a lot of time with the Skojare and the Storvatten tribes so we get to learn a lot more about them.

I enjoyed the story but found many of the side references a little distracting. We know Konstantin Black is out there and he is mentioned a lot but we are still unsure of his part in the scheme of things, same goes for Viktor Dalig. Those plot direction has seemed to have just stalled. Bottom line, it just made the story move a little slow for my tastes.

I also have to admit, I was enthralled by the last 1/3 of the book or so. Can you say, I didn't see that coming. It pretty much smacked me upside the head with the unexpected and the conclusion blew me away.

In the end, Ice Kissed was an entertaining young adult fantasy with highly unexpected twists and turns.

I received this ARC copy of Ice Kissed from St. Martin's Press - St. Martin's Griffin in exchange for a honest review. This book is set for publication May 5, 2015.

“His hair was disheveled from sleep, and he wore only a pair of pajama pants, revealing a tattoo of a rabbit above his heart.”

A rabbit.

A. RABBIT.

Because, of course. You are the hot male leader of an army of perfectly trained soldiers, and you have a tattoo of a rabbit above your heart.

Way to kill the mood.

I wasn't a huge fan of Bryn in book one, but in this one I really didn't like her. She was annoying, and after a while, I was sick of her.

Just like book one, I found the pacing pretty slow, which made the story drag. Bryn made it worse.

Overall, Not an enjoyable read.

Ice Kissed is an improvement upon to its first installment, Frostfire, but I can't say that I'm hooked. I wanted to know how Konstantin is tied into this whole mess. I wanted to know what the big secret is behind all of the suspicious aspects. Instead I got a lot of details about all of the characters relationships with one another. This wouldn't be a bad thing but Hocking goes into so much detail of each of her characters' personalities, backgrounds, and feelings that the core of the plot gets muddled out. I just kept waiting for something to happen.

description

At times the plot seemed like it was building up to something big but then nothing would come from it. No resolutions, no clues about what these events mean, nothing. By the next page, the event had already passed and Bryn would briefly explain what had happened. For the scenes that the reader is actually able to read as the event is happening the details are rushed and the scene is over in a blink of an eye. This made it seem like those details were never important to begin with. The lack of specifics in these crucial scenes makes it almost impossible to connect the characters and their motivations together.

description

What kept me going through the book is I kept waiting for Ridley and Bryn to clean up their act and admit their love for one another already.

description

Unfortunately, they both keep coming up with different reasons as to why they can't work. None of which made any sense to me.

I have so many questions but it seems like they are destined to go unanswered. With its unique plot, likable characters, The Kanin Chronicles have a lot of potential that's being wasted. I want to jump right into these books but because I have to wade through a lot of extra details to get to what is supposed to be important, it doesn't seem worth it. I hope the next book gives me the answers I'm looking for.

The beginning and end of this book were really strong but the rest of it just had me waiting for something finally happen. I could see the ‘plot-twist’ from a mile away, but I am extremely pleased with Kennet’s fate as he was my least favorite character.

Review to come!

Update 7/24/15:

This review is also featured on my blog Novels and Necklaces

Actual rating 4.5 stars

Ice Kissed is a great sequel in the Kanin Chronicles that is full of action, adventure, and romance. It will definitely please fans of the series and Amanda Hocking fans alike. Full of deception and betrayals at every turn, you never know what to expect! The story will have you on the edge of your seat (most times), and leave you breathless until the very last page. The ending of this novel alone makes this entire book worth reading, and in you will be longing to get your hands on the next book. Let me tell you, I'm expecting BIG things to happen in the next book based off of this ending, and I know Amanda Hocking will not let me down. It is going to be one killer finale!

I was very excited for this novel as I have always loved the world Amanda Hocking created originally in the Trylle Trilogy. This book made me remember why I loved the world so much. Rich and lush descriptions of Skojare palace left you feeling like you were actually there, with the coldness and conspiracy seeping into your bones. Suffice to say, I loved the entire time Bryn was in the Skojare palace. There were so many twists and turns that happened during this time that I couldn't stop reading.

The plot of this novel was also very good. However, the reason I had to go down a bit in the actual rating was the up and down feeling of the plot. I know I didn't go down much, but this aspect of the plot did prevent me from actually giving it a full 5 stars. For me, there were parts of this book that were absolutely phenomenal and I couldn't read fast enough, but then there were other parts that I felt were added just to make the book longer or just were just kind of there. As such, there were highs and lows. These parts weren't exactly boring, but they weren't really necessary either. I guess what I mean is that I didn't find it as exciting as the first book. Don't get me wrong, the story was still an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride, but not as much of a thrill ride as the first book in the series.

However, the writing was still amazing as ever. I have always loved Amanda Hocking's writing. She crafts such wonderful worlds that you simply never want to leave. And when you pick up her stories again, it feels like coming home. That is always the sign of a good storyteller. She gives her characters so much growth and depth that you feel as if you truly know these characters, but you never get bored with them either. In the end, they feel like friends. Bryn is such a strong heroine, and I have loved her character from the beginning. She has such a determination to succeed and overcome all of the obstacles that are in her path. She never lets her differences get to her, and always does her own thing. Most importantly, Bryn never loses herself or give into others demands of what is expected of her. She lives her own life, how she wants to live her life.

The romance in this one is steamy, especially one scene in particular. You'll know exactly what scene I'm talking about once you read it. And trust me, it will leave you fangirling so hard. I have shipped Ridley and Bryn from the moment I met them, and this book just made my shipping of them go into overdrive. They are seriously so perfect and one of my favorite couples. As long as Konstantin doesn't interfere with their relationship, I'll be a happy fangirl.

Overall, while there were parts that weren't the most exciting, Ice Kissed is still a very worthy sequel in the Kanin Chronicles, and is not to be missed by fans of the series. If you haven't checked this series out yet, you need to because you don't want to miss out on a new favorite!! I can't wait for the final book, Crystal Kingdom as it is sure to be an amazing end to an amazing series!

Happy reading :)

**I received this book for free from St. Martin's Press in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.**

*Genre* Young Adult, Paranormal
*Rating* 3.0

*My Thoughts*

Ice Kissed is the second installment in the Kanin Chronicles, picking up right where Frostfire left off. Protagonist Bryn Aven finds herself at the center of a major conspiracy that has left her wondering how far it truly goes, and who she can trust. Skojare Queen Linnea is missing, and presumed dead. Fugitives Konstantin Black and Viktor Dalig, who attacked Bryn and left her for dead, are still on the loose. The question still remains why Black seems so intent on protecting Bryn?

I had an inkling this wasn't book 1. Though it didn't impact on my reading experience.

I really enjoyed the book.

The characters and world building were great. The story line though wasn't great (a little predictable). It was executed well, especially at the end of the book.

Book 3 should be more intense, (the ending of book 2 means that book 3 will be explosive) I have very high hopes for book 3.

Now I must try and get my hands on book 1

Here we are, book 2 in The Kanin Chronicles. I swear I have been reading this series so fast that all the books are starting to blend together, but in a fantastic way. Ice Kissed begins right where book 1, Frostfire, has left off. Due to this being a three part series, and this being the middle book, I am probably going to run through this review rather quickly. It’s usually a bit easier to summarize the entire series as a whole in the last books review, so watch out for that one!

After Bryn and her boss Ridley return home from Storvatten, Bryn copes with the sense of failure at not locating the missing Skojare Queen; as well as, letting Konstantin Black escape again. As the threats on the Kanin kingdom grow, so do the threats at the kingdom in Storvatten. Bryn, along with a Högdragen guard named Kasper, are then sent back to protect the Skojare people and the kingdom. Due to the royal family feeling that there is corruption among their guards, Bryn and Kasper work to find out what was really behind the disappearance of Queen Linnea. Soon hidden secrets start to surface, and more than one mystery starts to intertwine as the kingdoms move closer to war.

So there is A LOT happening in this book, and there is no way I can touch on everything without this review taking at least two hours to read. Therefore, I will try to summarize the book in its entirety, without giving too much away. This book starts off with Bryn and Ridley just arriving back to Doldastam. Bryn is having some serious regrets about not being able to find Queen Linnea, and for letting Konstantin Black get away again. But Bryn being Bryn, she is determined more than ever to set things right and protect innocent people and her kingdom. Once again, Bryn finds herself at the Skojare palace with Kasper, a Högdragen guard, where they work together to find out what is really going on in the kingdom. After talking to multiple guards and the royal family, they feel that they keep hitting dead ends. But after the Skojare King is almost killed, they start to find clues as to what is really going on.

I really enjoyed this story, and think it was a great follow up to book 1. The main character is in a new setting, working with new characters, and there is another mystery intertwining into the already major issues that are happening. I think Bryn is developing into a great character, and in this installment she has proven to be a highly likeable and real person. The author has been doing a great job of keeping the reader on their toes about what the conclusion will be, and this book was no exception. I had started off having a VERY strong inkling to who was behind everything, but the author throws in all these extra “scenes” and problems that kind of started to throw me. At the end of the book I was completely shocked (but in some ways, not too shocked) about what happened to Bryn, and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on book 3…which I just received in the mail! SCORE!

The relationship between Bryn and Ridley heats up in this book, and I mean it seriously HEATS up. It’s so hot it’s dipping over that line of PG-13 but kind of R rated…kind of. I will say, their wishy-washy-ness with each other was starting to get on my nerves in this book. Sometimes I wish I could just grab those characters, shake them, and make them get over their weird insecurities. Honestly guys, were all adults here!

I know I sped through this one, but it is all leading up to book 3 so that I can summarize the series as a whole. Book 2 is usually, in most cases, a book that sets up for the final book that brings everything together. The refreshing thing about this series that I am finding is that these books flow so perfectly together, and they each have their own special thing going on. I am really recommending this series to all of you, it has gotten me addicted for the past three days and I am going to be so sad when it’s over.

I forgot how much I love this world. I read Frostfire, the first book in the Kanin Chronicles, back in January. Six months apart from the series definitely made my memory a little rusty. I know, I know. Six months is nothing. Hats off to Amanda Hocking for writing this series so quickly. Despite my forgetfulness, it was surprisingly easy to find myself back in the magical world of the Kanin troll tribe. Bonus points for the fact that Ice Kissed added a glossary, family tree, and pronunciation guide at the end.

If you have a rusty memory like me, you’ll maybe not remember that a lot of the focus in Frostfire was on Konstantin and his involvement with the kidnapping of changelings. Although Konstantin is still present in Ice Kissed, his involvement took more of a back seat. In Ice Kissed, the plot takes a little side turn when Bryn and Ridley construct a mission to find the missing Skojare Queen, Linnea. This adventure lands Bryn in the Skojare Kingdom (sans Ridley *sigh*) to help investigate the treason that has been taking place within the palace walls.

Trust no one. At least that is how Ice Kissed made me feel about every single character. I kind of imagined that I was playing a mental game of Clue. Everyone felt unreliable. Such tension! Such excitement! I wish I could say I solved the mystery. I will, however, accept this defeat. Hooray! I was wrong! I love when a book can stump me.

Ice Kissed was a steady stream of action. The switch in setting provided a nice change in adventure for the characters. It wasn’t necessarily fast paced, nor was it slow paced. The ending, however, definitely packed a punch. A lot happens in so few pages, including some unfortunate events for certain beloved characters. With the story reverting back to Konstantin just in time for a cliffhanger, it leaves an excellent send off to Crystal Kingdom.

I remember reading Frostfire and thinking that there was going to be a love triangle involvement with Bryn, Konstantin, and Ridley. There is definitely something brewing between Bryn and Konstantin. But romance? I no longer think so. In Ice Kissed, Ridley has an even stronger presence in Bryn’s life. The romance takes a slight New-Adult turn, which, at first, caught me off guard. I think it’s safe to say that we’ve been waiting for something special (perhaps another kiss) to happen between them. Well, we get a whole lot more. I’m looking at you chapter 15 *wink*. I must say, however, I enjoyed this advancement in their relationship. It was a realistic moment of weakness for Bryn.

Bryn is still such an admirable character. Firstly, she is not about to let a man ruin her chances of becoming a Högdragen. As you know, she has been extremely persistent about that since the first book in the series. The emotional walls start falling down in Ice Kissed, however, which I think provides a nice conflict for Bryn. Will she find a balance of work and love in Crystal Kingdom? I’d like to think so.

In Ice Kissed, we see Bryn still troubled by the investigation of the Skojare Queen's disappearance while still punishing herself for allowing Konstanin and his accomplice to escape. With word of her injuries reaching the King, war has been declared on Konstanin with both high society and guards alike being trained for combat. Bryn blames herself but is beginning to realise that Konstanin isn't the enemy, but a scapegoat of the kingdom where tensions have increased tenfold. Her friendship with Ridley is tense at best, scared to take the emotional risk of telling him how she feels, instead she gives into temptation and settles for a night of passion before journeying to find the missing queen once more.

Where in Frostfire, Bryn was capable, but in Ice Kissed she's fierce, determined and we see her human emotions being torn apart by her kingdom and the man she's hesitant to admit she's fallen in love with. Bryn reminds me of a mild version of Celaena Sardothien, not afraid to stand up for what she believes in and seemingly sees emotion as a form of weakness she no longer wants or needs. The only aspect that I find disappointing with Bryn is her lack of character development. She seems to have two personas, outspoken and brooding. I loved seeing her relinquish control in her moment of weakness with Ridley, but hopefully she finds a greater balance with her emotions, or lack thereof in the finale.

The pacing is more action packed than Frostfire, and I loved being transported to the watery Skojare kingdom, along with the flirtatious, verging on sleazy prince Kennet. But like her own homeland, transparency within the Skojare is non existent. Guards with a hidden agenda and a cold hearted king that is seemingly in the midst of an emotional breakdown. But in a testament to Bryn's character, she refused to give up, possibly due to guilt in blaming herself for Konstanin escaping custody. I needed to know what Konstanin knew, and why he has involved himself with warning others against an unknown enemy. I felt answers weren't provided and the reader is strung along when all will be revealed come the finale. Hopefully the big reveal as the storyline unravels won't disappoint.

Ice Kissed is another well written and engaging installment in the Kanin Chronicles, but sadly readers are still left with more questions than answers. I loved the defining point of Bryn and Ridley's relationship and exploring the Skojare kingdom, but it felt like a cleverly disguised sequel that doesn't add much to the overall storyline. I enjoyed it nonetheless. Readers will be expecting a well crafted finale that finally gives us the answers we so desperately seek. A big task, but I'm more than confident that Amanda Hocking will deliver with her trademark style and flare.

AMANDA.HOCKING.IS.A.GODDESS.Not only Ice Kissed didn't suffer from the second book syndrome but it was even better than the first! It was an excellent return to the Troll world, from snowy Doldastam to the underwater palace of Storvatten and the fairytale lake!

In Ice Kissed,Bryn has to make peace with herself after her failure to capture the bad guys in Frostfire and prepare for a war that would endager the entire Kanin Kindgom and the line of succession, while a conspiracy and hidden secrets in the Skojare court threaten the balance between the troll tribes. Not complicated enough? She has to figure out a way to prevent her feelings for Ridley from jeopardizing her career. But as time goes by,she questions her priorities and the devotion to her purpose because she may need to sacrifice her heart and her beliefs in order to achieve it.

I love this book so much it hurts.I love it for the fast pace, the breathtaking descriptions, the amazing plot (a possible coup in the troll realms??just gimme more already!!) and the characters!Bryn is so strong-willed and independent,a really kickass heroine! She went through so much, she lost her innocense and gave up everything that mattered to her to serve a kingdom that didn't even accept her.And the forbidden romance with Ridley may not be in the spotlight but it's absolutely one of my favorite parts of this series! Ridley ...*starts drooling and daydreaming and hyperventilating*.Phew! he is hot like hell, and so caring and passionate that my heart skipped a beat everytime he appeared, even when his name was mentioned! Please Amanda please please please don't ruin my OTP!! <3 <3 I also loved the bromance between Bryn and Kasper, they were such a great team!
After that ending,I'm dying to find out what the heck is going on and who is strong enough to terrorize the entire troll world!I'm still shocked and devastated,I have to start reading something else asap becuase you know what they say, when in pain distract the brain...

How can it end like that??? Seriously, I need answers! And now I have to wait and wait and wait and wait for the next one!

Ice kissed was so freaking awesome! Fast-paced, I barely had time to process before something else happened, full of mystery and so so addictive. Here is a shortened version of my thought process when I finished...

Omg... ARE YOU SERIOUS???? But they just.... And he just said..... And they are about to.... But what about.... Oh FFS now I have to wait!?!?!?!?

Yep. It was that good. Amanda Hocking can seriously do no wrong... Apart from make me wait... That's really wrong... REALLY REALLY WRONG AMANDA!!!!

If you haven't started any of this series yet, you are MISSING OUT!!! Start at Switched and delve into the journey because it is awesome!
