But when love turns into open warfare on the airship Dawnhawk, Lina Stone and the rest of the crew are forced to take action to save themselves.
Leaving Fengel and Natasha to work out their differences on a deserted isle, they embark on a heist that promises outrageous fortune. Yet without the wily determination of their captains, Lina and the others find themselves in more trouble than they could have imagined.
Meanwhile, it turns out that the deserted island is anything but deserted, forcing the two outcast captains to contend with rival military factions, ancient pre-human technologies, and worst of all: each other.
I haunt the Pacific Northwest. You can find me drinking too much coffee and arguing over the best settings for the deployment of THAC0 tables (Ravenloft. It's Ravenloft). I'm the author of the Dawnhawk Trilogy and the Blackscale Thief duology. Learn more about my work at www.jonathonburgess.com.
The crew of the Dawnhawk is back for more pillaging but is having teamwork issues, especially the Captains. Who are marooned on an island paradise to undergo mandatory couple's therapy from a monster of a shrink. Meanwhile, the crew falls apart while trying to keep it together and find themselves adrift at sky.
The series keeps getting better as the story continues. I really enjoy the character development and the way the members of the crew evolve.
I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was easily equal to the previous book in the trilogy, Chasing the Lantern. The crew of the Dawnhawk, including Fengel, Natasha, Lina, and all the rest, continue their romping adventures through the skies over the Atalian Sea. All of the action and adventure of the first book is combined with a lot of great humor and even a deeper look into the madcap chaos that is Fengel and Natasha's ... complicated, relationship. The story zips right along without missing a beat while balancing a light hearted tone against the ever more dire tribulations the characters find themselves tangled in. I recommend it for a great fun read.
I really enjoyed this steampunk novel. It is a great continuation of the Dawnhawk trilogy. We really delve deep into the characters and the history of the world, without sacrificing the fast-paced excitement of an adventure novel. Pirates, monsters, mislaid plans, and even even a few undead, make this book fun and exciting to read. I recommend this book as a fun romp!
