Hart Clan Hybrids #1

A Love Worth Biting For

Rate this book
Hart Clan Hybrids, Book 1

Who’s afraid of the big bad hybrid?

Amber Paulson’s wolf has chosen a mate for her, but Amber is not amused with its pick. Jake Meyers might look amazing in a wet T-shirt and have the cheekbones and strong jaw that artists drool over. Too bad he is missing a pulse.

Jake is a vampire, well, mostly. Then a tall, curvy redhead pops up on his radar and something awakens in him. Even though he tries to stay away, Amber gets under his skin, and his vampire/werewolf heritage starts to become more bark and less bite. For the first time, he feels the call of the moon, and he knows it’s all because of Amber Paulson.

Amber’s trying to stay away, and Jake’s trying to not turn furry. They both fail miserably—and with a lot of sweaty and enjoyable property destruction.

By giving in to her mating call, Amber finds out more than she ever wanted to know about herself, her family, and the rogue wolf who took so much from her so long ago. As her past comes back to bite her, she’ll have to decide what she’s willing to give up for her mate. Her home? Her pack? Her…heartbeat?

Warning: This book contains a snarky shifter heroine who could give Sookie a run for her money, a hot hunk of a vampire with a soft (and furry) side, and sex so sizzling that even an inter-species war can’t get in the way.

Sophmoric characters, and hero was really unlikable [obnoxious, egotistical and juvenile; he's supposed to be a vampire repeating high school for the n-teeth time (like a senior citizen in human years) yet still acts like he's in high school...]. It reads like a teen fanfic.

Other character issues - There's a medical situation, she calls the elder healer/doctor and he pokes someone with a stick and says - are you sure he isn't dead? 😒 (I think the writer was trying to be funny, total miss).

If you like 'written like a teen fanfic', have at it. As an adult, it's just cringe. DNF.

First off I should say that I "know" the author. Well, in that way that you can only know someone online. Which is part of why I put off reading it for a few weeks after I got it. I was afraid, "what if I don't love it?", but I should have known better.

I knew it would be hot, I even figured it would be well written, but I didn't count on it being so much FUN. I sat down last night intending to read a couple of chapters, get a feel for the story, and ended up reading the whole thing, start to finish, and wanting the next one, like, NOW.

So the meat of the story is this: Amber is a werewolf. She wasn't born that way, she was turned a long time ago, in an attack that killed her mother and her sister, leaving only Amber and her father alive to pick up the pieces. Now, many many years later, Amber's father is a pack Alpha, and Amber is once again going through college (hey, at least it ain't high school!), where she lays eyes on one stunning piece of hot man, and everything inside her goes into overdrive. Uh oh, someone's got a Mate!

Even bigger shocker is this- her mate is a vampire! Dun Dun Dun! Oh, not just a vampire, he has some wolf in him too, an almost unheard of wolf/vamp hybrid. Things just got complicated in Amber's happy little world, and the more she and Jake interact(and fuck, did I mention there's lots of good, dirty fucking to be found?) and learn about each other, the more complicated things become.

I guess my only real criticism is that I'd like to have known more- more about the wolves, more about the vamps, more about Amber's life between being turned til now, and maybe more of Amber and Jake falling in love, beyond the mating lust. I understand the mating heat thing, I get it, I like it, but I still like for a bit more time to be spent on the getting to know you and love you outside of your cock and wicked tongue parts.I could easily have seen myself devouring another 50-100 pages of this world and this couple. But I guess that's why it's called book 1?

This story reminded me a lot of Shelly Laurenston and Mary Hughes. Snarky heroine, alpha male who is actually quite to die for, and it's tough to believe this is just a debut novel. I can't wait to see the stories Roxy gives us once she's got a bit more time and feedback under her belt.

New author, Roxy Mew’s debut novel, A LOVE WORTH BITING FOR, has the humor that I crave and the romance I expect in my paranormal romance reads.

Amber is a wolf and Jake is a vampire, so, from the get-go, their love is not a match made in heaven and both are resistant to giving in to the mating pheromones that have them blinded with lust. But they are both smart and know that a life together will be everything except for easy – vampires and werewolves don’t exactly have an awesome track record for getting along in their world.

Amber is my favorite kind of heroine, she is sassy and snarky and strong, but let’s not forget funny! She is really funny! She is also the daughter of the Alpha for her pack, so she has a bit of a spotlight on her – there’s no way her mating with a vampire will fly under the radar, so she tries really hard to resist the mating call. Amber is not easily impressed by the opposite sex, so watching her get sucked in by the mating call was fun.

Personally, unless you’re taking down a twelve-point buck with your shirt off—while covered in hair—I am not usually impressed.

Jake is smooth and sexy. At a glance, he appears to be just your average hunky co-ed, but he has a secret. Not only is he a vampire, but he also has a little werewolf in him – that side of him has been dormant for so long that he kind of forgets he’s not 100% vampire – until he meets Amber, at which point his wolf side is impossible to ignore. Jake is so caught off guard by the emotions that surface upon his first encounter with Amber, that he is convinced she has worked some kind of ju-ju magic on him and demands she reverses whatever she did that has him feeling out of sorts… He tries to come up with any explanation he can think of to understand what is happening to him.

Jake—still didn’t know his last name—didn’t move. It made me want to push him. “I do give off certain pheromones to attract prey. Are you sure you aren’t just responding to those?”

That would be convenient, but… “I’m sure. Your sister gives off those pheromones too. She couldn’t dazzle me, so I doubt the pheromone thing works on me either. And I had no desire to walk up and lick water off your sister’s chest.”

His irises flexed, and his face erupted in a grin that could have made straight men gay. “You want to lick me?”

Like a lollipop.

A LOVE WORTH BITING FOR is full of great one-liners that I wanted to share with you, but thought it best to let you discover them when you check out this new series for yourself. I am already stalking the next book in the series (it will be out next year and relax there’s no cliffy). Congrats, Roxy on your new book and I can’t wait to see what you have for us in the future!

A big thank you to who ever recommended this book to me. This was super fun erotic paranormal read with a wolf snarky girl (although she is at least 100 years old) and vampire/wolf shifter boy (he is about a 100 as well but they go to college so lol).

The pace and world building of this one is fun. I love find new capable writers and this is Mews debut.

Heroine is a big, strapping hottie. She is funny. The hero is drool worthy. Great banter.

What I really like about this book is that it is first in the series and that they are making a Hybrid Clan.  I love Hybrids.

If you don't like erotic romance, you won't like this novella, There is a lot of sex. As the heroine says...you thinking bunnies go at it? Try Werewolves...or something to that order.

Really there is a bit too much sex at the sacrifice of character development and love story development but none the less I am looking forward to the rest of the series which like features the witch BFF or the hunky genius Wolf Shifter.

I hope they (our new Alpha Pair) collect all those illegitimate Hybrid babies and their momma's that are mentioned at one point in the book. This would make me happy

I tend to round up for debut authors. Show your support and read a good book!

I added this book to the following Goodreads lists! Ginger woman: Redheaded Heroine in Romance, Species Conversion: Really Changing for Your Love, Best Fated Mate Romance: Your Love was meant to be, Star-Crossed Lovers

3.5 stars, rounded up

Nice debut. Well-written, interesting world-building, loved the discrimination issues with hybrid creatures, fun snappy humor. My only criticism is...too much sex, not enough character development/emotional relationship development.

Grade: B-

Looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

One thing I have learned in my years as a bibliophile, is to always try to get through the first 50 pages of a book before deciding whether or not it is something I do or do not enjoy. I am so glad that I stick to that rule simply for the fact that I would have misjudged a number of books otherwise. Sometimes it takes a little while to get a story moving and this story is no different. Originally coming across as a typical college angst type of story, I was pleasantly surprised with an animal attraction that is nothing less than rough and tumble with side of sexy.
Amber Paulson is the daughter of the alpha of the Paulson pack. A pack of wolf shifters that move around the country as they see fit. At her current alma mater, Amber has no problem enjoying the local eye candy with her best friend Mary while taking in the beautiful outdoor air. When she sees a gorgeous male specimen pouring water over his head and chest, she gains a sudden urge to lick it off and wonders who the gorgeous young man is.

Jake Meyers didn’t realize who the girl was that caught his eye. She was beautiful, she was watching, and he was interested. Of course he never had a problem getting what he wanted, but that came with the territory of being a vampire. After crossing paths with the beauty who kept eyeing him, he couldn’t stop thinking about her. Even when he was with other females, he couldn’t feed because all of his thoughts were on her. It was as if she controlled him.

When Jake confronts Amber to find out what she did to him, the pull between them was undeniable. Not only that but strange things were happening and Jake couldn’t explain it. His heart would beat involuntarily, his nails began to sharpen, and his hunger for Amber was growing by the minute. Determined to give Jake the chase he desires she makes some quick and daring decisions knowing Jake would be hot on her tail. She knows what he is, but she knows he is hers and that presents more problems than anyone could imagine. It is up to the two of them to follow their hearts and follow their fate knowing that breaking a treaty made years earlier, could lead to an all out war between Amber’s Pack and Jake’s Family. Can they defy the odds and come out alive?

Wow what fast paced read! I was not expecting the adrenaline rush that came with this story. While it started out a little slow, once the action began, it continued with a rush of sex, aggression, and pure animal magnetism. Jake and Amber come from two very different worlds but are tied together in ways you will never expect (no it has nothing to do with incest). While not explicitly detailed, but descriptive enough, the author manages to surprise readers more than once with unpredictable twists and turns as the characters evolve and fulfill the roles they were meant to assume.

Amber is a spirited and energetic young woman who knows what she wants and is not afraid to go after it. She relishes in the chase as an alpha female and has no problem showing that she is in control. Jake is loyal to his family and to his heart. While I admit that the relationship between he and Amber seems a bit rushed (I am understating this quite a bit), when Jake determines where his loyalties lie, he defends his choices wholeheartedly. Like Amber, he is all Alpha which can present some rather interesting confrontations and some very funny moments (I think my favorite was when Jake wakes up after hitting his head rather hard and Amber admits he ran into a poll looking at her amazing rack). There is also the attraction! Call me a wolf pack wannabe because I was drooling over the scenes between these two and would relish in the ecstasy that is the bite of a claiming.

Turning the last page, I was satiated but as always, I want to know what happens next. As many authors do, Ms. Roxy has left this story awaiting a sequel and I am looking forward to getting my hands on it.
A Love Worth Biting For is a fast paced, fun read that will surprise you at every turn.

Amber Paulson, daughter of the local werewolf Alpha, has found her mate. Coincidentally, he happens to be Jake Meyers of the Meyers vampire Family. The mating bond is too much to fight, but the inter-species relationship is not welcomed by Pack or Family. These two must figure out how to happily co-exist in spite of learning that neither of them is exactly what they seem.

This was a very cute story. It had action, sexy times, sweet times, plenty of humor, and I want to know what happens next. The humor was more than enough for me to stop pouting about the fact that it was in 1st POV. A snarky, slightly self-centered werewolf heroine and a worldly, sexy vampire hero really heat up the pages. If I had to explain the feeling of the book, I would say it had elements that reminded me of Underworld and of Amanda Carlson's Hot Blooded series with super sexy times added. The pacing was spot on throughout.

My only qualm (and it wasn't a huge issue) was the insta-love. Based on my perception of the world, a strong bond makes sense. I just wish we'd made it farther in the story before the L-word was dropped.

If Amber Paulson and Jake Myers give in to their mating call, they could lose everything and start a war, they alone can decide if love is worth biting for in this exciting paranormal romance. By giving in to their mating call, Amber and Jake divides families, makes lots of enemies and could bring about a war which adds lots of tension to the story and the well written scenes capture the imagination and ensure the reader enjoys every minute of the non-stop excitement. While I think the story should have been a little longer, the story is exciting, has some fun moments mixed into all the seriousness and is a promising start to a fascinating series with an intriguing spin on hybrids.

Was looking for female werewolves, and I loved what I found! Jake is dreamy.

Anyway they set up the Doc and the Dad and the Vampire Barbie which is the third book but I often feel weirded out reading sex scenes with parental figures so I think I'll skip book 3 😭😭 I'm not so interested in book 2 tbh buttttttt I do wish to learn more about what happens to Jake and Amber's new clan!!! So maybe I'll set aside the squick and read on 👀👀

A LOVE WORTH BITING FOR blew me away. It’s fresh, funny and completely engrossing. I’m convinced that Roxy Mews is a new author to watch. Now, I may be biased because I know this author but after reading this book TWICE before writing my review I feel as though I’m being as honest as completely possible about this new book.

Amber Paulson, daughter of the Paulson Pack Alpha, just found her mate. Sucky thing is that her mate just happens to be a vampire. And that’s a no-no when it comes to mating in her world. She tries hard to avoid him, but it doesn’t work. Next thing she knows, Amber’s got a drool-worthy mate and the possibility of an interspecies war on her hands...and that’s just the beginning.

Jake Meyers is not looking to be mated. As a vampire/werewolf hybrid, he hasn’t even really given much thought to his werewolf side. But when Amber Paulson walks into his life, everything he thought about himself gets turn on it’s head.

It seems as though no one is happy about their mating and as Amber and Jake try to figure out how to be together, they have to fight against forces on all sides that try to keep them apart. However, it may be Jake and Amber’s shared past that may drive them from each other for good.

FUNNY. SNARKY. SEXY. INTRIGUING! These are all words that I think of when trying to describe this debut novel. The plot is original, dialogue is hilarious, and the characters are completely memorable. I loved the author’s voice in this, very down to earth while weaving an awesome storyline.

The story starts off with a bang and then doesn’t let up until the last word. I sat down to read this and didn’t look up again until I was done. The only thing I could think of was the fact, that I can’t wait to find out what’s going to happen next. Don’t get me wrong, there’s no big cliffhanger, but instead the ending was left open enough extend the series with the focus on other characters.

I don’t think I’ve laughed so much while being completely turned on at the same time, but Amber’s character was hilarious. She had some of the best one-liners. Put against Jake’s “straight-man” dialogue, it was side-splitting at times.

I honestly can not think of one bad thing to say about this story. I absolutely loved it and can’t wait for more from this author. If A LOVE WORTH BITING FOR is anything to go by, she’s going to be a star!

It always makes me nervous to read/review a book by a person that I know and by know, I mean, we’ve been Goodreads friends since long before Roxy Mews was even a person. In fact, I even had the book for a good month before I even read it, due to my nervousness…but I had to take that plunge and i’m so glad I did. My initial thought was, I love the whole hybrid werewolf/vampire theme in the book. There are lots of paranormal/UF type books out there, but I couldn’t think of any books that used a more of a hybrid theme.

I loved the tension between the vampires and werewolved, it was kind of nice to see a book where they don’t miraculously get along (since that seems to be a common trope in PNR, especially where there is a diverse range of characters). But at the same time, it felt like it was set in a real world, not a completely made up paranormal realm. Almost like the author sat outside on a college campus, just observing what was going on. The first “meeting” between Amber and Jake was awesome (and if I understood something the author mentioned, it was inspired in part by her first meeting with her future husband).

I did feel that the conflict between the werewolves and the vampires was played down a bit, and needed more, but I kind of hope that is just because it was book 1 in a series (or at least it had better be)…and that the conflict will be explored a bit more.

Overall I gave A Love Worth Biting For 3.5 stars but rounding up to 4 and can’t wait to see what she writes in the future.

I just wish we'd made it farther in the story before the L-word was dropped. Next, the first person narrative style that just didn't work. Tedious and repetitive discussions. Plus no real explanation for the vampires reaction.

Wolf shifter Amber Paulson had always been told that when the call came to mate it would be unmistakable, it would send her hormones raging, and she would not be able to escape the mating call. Of course that was before she found out her mate was the deliciously handsome Jake Meyers, who happens to be a vampire. Vampire and shifters don’t mix, Amber decides to enlist the help of the pack doctor to try and break the mating instinct between them. Best laid plans and all that have Jake and Amber mating like bunnies and trying to figure out how their newfound mating will last beyond the night if both of them are dead.

The Meyers and Paulson’s long ago had a treaty, which Amber and Jake just broke. Of course tell it to the wolf dormant in Jake who is howling for his wolfie mate. Now they have to act quick to in order to survive a possible war between the vampires and shifters.

The story was good and interesting, but could have been better. For one thing this big bad, such as the Vampire Family was coming after Amber and co, and then all of a sudden there is an epilogue... The story wasn't complete, it wasn't finished and barely chipped at the iceberg. The story starts with werewolf Amber finding her mate vampire Jake, only he's not just a vamp he's a hybrid. There are problems with him being allowed into the pack, and problems for her being allowed into the family. We come to the conclusion that for Amber to come into the family she needs to become a vamp, also a hybrid. But Jakes father and head of the Family wants her dead. So they go on the run....from Indiana to freaking Chicago. To be honest I think, they should have went further south and west not a state next door....it didn't seem logical. So it was lacking for me because suddenly we are done being on the run....idk. So it felt incomplete.

Told from the viewpoint of Amber, a female werewolf, (a unique viewpoint in it's own right), Mews creates a rich new world and weaves a fun tale of love and danger. Vampires and werewolves, yes, but also the possibility of a hybrid - someone who is both werewolf and vampire.

And it's such a fun read. Amber's voice jumps off the page, grabs your collar, and drags you into a story so compelling you will loose sleep...but so worth it. Sex, danger and just plain fun. It's everything I look for in a paranormal romance and then some.

5 stars? You bet! I will read this one again, and look forward to more Hart Clan novels.

If you love paranormal romance, you owe it to yourself to read this book.

Best book I've read in a long time!! LOVED the new species & how the author handled the twists, didn't see it coming!!! But I feel that the ending was a little rushed! I understand that there are going to be more books in this series so I feel that the author should have taken a little more time to go into more detail about what happened, but I get that's its from Amber's POV so that would've been hard. But overall I love the Amber/Jake dynamic & I especially love their relationship!!! It is evolving with them & I can't wait to read about their exploits!!! Way to go Roxy, you knocked it outta the park & have me addicted!!!

This is just a rapid fire of information. There is no smooth transition from one scene into another, from one challenge into another, from one life altering decision/epiphany into another. It all seems like it gets thrown at you in a rapid succession. In short I feel like I’m reading a journal of an army general or something with no finesse for leading into a story but just dumping a whole bunch of facts on you. Here’s where we’re at, here’s what and why we did the stuff we did. And we had no doubt because sometime life gives you lemons and cut those suckers up to make lemonade. It does make it all hard to take in most of the time.

I thoroughly enjoyed this latest Romeo and Juliette inspired romance with a paranormal twist. Tagging along with Amber and Jake as they meet, learned that they are mates, and discover that they are destined to create a new family of hybrids was entertaining and engaging. The storyline and characters were well-formed and well-written. I found myself racing through the pages because it flowed so smoothly and easily. Ms. Mews has shown her writing chops and has done herself proud. I look forward to reading the next book to find out what happens to them.

I wish I could have given this book four stars, but it just needed something more. I think having the book be from both points of view would have been a major help. It just felt like a lot was missing just coming from Amber's point of view. I really liked the way the book started, but it got pretty confusing near the end. It became difficult to keep up with and understand everything that was going on. Other than those few things, I thought it was pretty good but I don't know if I'll continue this series.

I really enjoyed this book! The characters were well developed. The pacing was well done. The story had very interesting twists and turns to it. The ending, though HEA, left us with plenty of places to go for more. The heat level was HOT! For a first book, this was amazing! Keep up the great job! I am a fan!

This book was recommended to me by GR Sarah. It turned out to be as awesome as her review said it was & I'm happy she took the time to recommend it. I rate this 4 stars with the only negatives being the ridiculously quick on the drawl insta-love. I'm talking days! I'll be reading book 2 ASAP. The world & continuous trail blazing arc is to me immensely interesting.

This book was gifted to me from a fellow book nerd. And I am very glad I read it. It was a very quick read and the author grabbed my attention from the beginning. I very much enjoyed the story and am looking forward to the second. It definitely has lots of steam while keeping an interesting plot. Loved it. Definitely recommend for fellow werewolf/vampire lovers.

I liked this book but I didn't love it. Sometimes the snark was overdone and the dialogue stilted but the story was good. There were things that I didn't fully understand but I suspect that those things will be explained later in the series. No cliffhanger but the story is a continuation.
