MOONERS: a catastrophic sci-fi comedy

Rate this book
Marooned on the moon after Earth's obliteration by a rogue asteroid, befuddled former interstellar legend Commander Gordon Gooch and the screwball residents of Endymion Colony must face isolation, survival…and their own disgusting neuroses. With rescue out of the question, they are left to brave the cold lunar wastes with nothing but their sick senses of humor to clutch as blankies.

As days drag on into cringetastically long weeks, tensions skyrocket, unholy alliances form, and morons literally lose limbs in pompous acts of idiocy. From outrageous scientific shenanigans to arcane moon-shattering secrets, freaky-deaky clone cults to unexpected romances (and the odd sleazy tryst), this darkly comic tale plumbs the schlubby-yet-sweet depths of human nature in the face of global catastrophe.

Will they escape their lunar lockdown or vibe with the moonbound grind? (Or all get themselves killed like dipsh*ts?) This twisted, laugh-out-loud odyssey will ‘fly you to the moon’…and dump you there for the rest of your measly life.

Fans of Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and the classic animated sitcom Futurama will relish this uproarious, irreverent sci-fi adventure filled with boundless imagination, unchecked lunacy, and a surprising dose of heart.

Tyler Bumpus is a human author from the Sunshine State. Yes, he is indeed the fabled and ghastly ‘Florida Man’ of urban legend and American folklore. When not prowling the swamps and beaches and Wendy’s drive-thrus of his native land, he occasionally writes things:

- The brand-spanking-new sci-fi/comedy MOONERS: a catastrophic sci-fi comedy

- The Swallowed World Saga, Books One & Two

- Awful high-school poetry in a spiral notebook

- A scathing fourth-grade book report on Goosebumps: You Can’t Scare Me! (Spoilers: those mud monsters weren’t even real mud monsters! Boo! Lame.)

(Two of those classics are sadly out of print.) Presently, he is at work on more Mooners novels for all of your moony needs. Follow him at tylerbumpus.com, as well as a bunch of crappy social medias he barely touches.

It’s ‘Idiocracy’ meets ‘The Outer Worlds’

(Forewarning, I received an advanced copy of this book. But I assure you that I shall be scathingly impartial)

Mooners is one of those fantastically depressing end-of-the-world narratives, not because it’s bleak or drenched in violence (quite the opposite, in fact) but because it’s painfully believable.

Everyone in Mooners is an idiot.

Humanity doesn’t survive the world’s end by pluck or ingenuity, but simply by dumb-luck. There are a few stand-out characters, a few faded glimmers of glory… but the stupidity is, as the kids say, “systemic.”

If you want to see a band of loveable goofs fumble their way past extinction, then check out Mooners!

I've loved Tyler's work since The Swallowed World - and although this is a departure, I loved Mooners. It's hard to get comedy right in books and to blend it with Sci-Fi - especially when there are some TV examples of this, it's extra hard for the writer, as the readers have some strong comparisons. Luckily Tyler has delivered this extremely well - thanks to his brilliant writing skills and very strong dialogue.
I look forward to the next!

Yet another example of why Mr. Bumpus is one of my top favorite authors. Absolutely loved it and very much looking forward to the next book.
