The Lamplighter

Rate this book
It’s an honor to bring light to the dark.

The nineteenth-century whaling village of Warbler is famous for its lucky ship figureheads—and infamous for people disappearing into the nightly fog. In this murky locale, the lamplighter is synonymous with safety and protection, and it’s a position Temperance assumes when her father is found hanging from one of the lampposts. Though Tempe proves competent, the town is still hesitant to let a woman handle this responsibility.

When a girl disappears after two lamps go out, Tempe’s ability to provide for her mother and younger sister hangs in the balance. She scrambles for answers, hindered at every turn by the village authorities’ call for her removal. As more villagers vanish under her watch, Tempe discovers unsettling truths about the famous Warbler figureheads and her own beloved father. But her warnings of a monster are ignored, even by her own family. Now she must follow the light out of her own fog of despair, as she faces the choice to look the other way or risk speaking out and possibly dooming herself and her sister to be among the lost.

Beautifully written, this atmospheric horror novel will keep you guessing until the last page.

A slow burning story set in the 19th Century with a protagonist whose problems and worries echo that of young women today.

Temperance—Tempe for those close to her—inherited her father’s job after he killed himself. Problem is, no one around thinks that having a woman as the town’s lamplighter is much of a good idea. For Tempe, being the lamplighter is both a source of pride and constant worries, particularly since her family—a disable mother and younger sister—would become destitute without it.

Things are already difficult enough without adding to the mix the disappearance of Molly, a local girl; the constant presence of Gideon, the creepy woodcarver; and the gossip of Benjamin, the town’s drunk.

As Tempe fights to keep her job while investigating what happened to Molly, she comes to discover that perhaps carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders alone is not the best idea, but how to explain to Josiah, her boyfriend, or Pru, her sister that whatever it is that's been happening in Warbler goes beyond the border between the normal and the supernatural? How to explain to others, without sounding like she has lost her mind, that there’s something in the fog, something evil?

This is not a fast-paced story, but one where every word counts and must be slowly relished. The descriptions are evocative and chilling at times. The characters flawed but also painfully life-like, moving through the story with strong steps.

If you enjoy gothic horror, you’ll like this one.

Four-and-a-half stars.

┊ ┊ ⋆˚ This book is a debut novel from Crystal J.Bell
┊ ┊ ⋆˚ It is a very atmospheric read (horror).
┊ ┊ ⋆˚ I genuinely had mixed feelings while reading this, maybe it's because I don't like to read horror stories. I do recommend this book if you enjoy horror books, this one was well-written nonetheless.
┊ ┊ ⋆˚ The cover is so pretty, I mean look at it

⁀➷ Trigger Warnings (TW) : abuse, adult/minor relationship, alcoholism, body horror, death, death of a loved one, injury/injury detail, misogyny, murder, pedophilia, physical abuse, sexual assault, sexual harassment, suicide, violence.

⁀➷I'm my father's daughter, after all.

The ending blew my mind, oh my god wow

“There's an evil in Warbler, and I am the only one who knows about it.”

ARC provided via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

TW: abuse, adult/minor relationship, alcoholism, animal death, blood, body horror, death, death of a loved one, fire/fire injury, grief, injury/injury detail, mental illness, misogyny, murder, pedophilia, physical abuse, sexual assault, sexual harassment, suicide, violence.

Incredibly sad to say that I truly, wholeheartedly disliked everything about this book.

I keep writing and rewriting this review because I feel I am coming off too harsh and that's never my intention. However, I also don't know how to express any of my feelings on this book without sounding incredibly harsh.

The characters were dull, insufferable, and incapable of making a single good decision. The pacing was an absolute mess. The suspense was non-existent. The conversations on feminism and misogyny were so incredibly poorly handled that it would be impressive, if I wasn't so disheartened by it. The suicide plotline is used as a jump-scare throughout the novel.

There's also a weird element that makes it feel like age doesn't exist in this world. Whenever there are flashbacks to when Temperance was 16, she was seen as a child (which is correct) but then her 16 year old sister is in a rush to get married to the same man that took advantage of her sister, and none of the adults have a problem with it, simply because they want to get married first?

On that topic, assault is mentioned so often that it almost loses any poignancy. This, connected with Temperance lying (/telling partial truths) to her little sister about her experiences* making the assault seem like it was really just a case of her getting her feelings hurt, was just... painful in every way.

*I don't believe survivors are ever required to share their stories with anyone. However, in what world would you try to warn your sister away from your abuser by making it sound like he simply rebuffed your attentions? And then she had the audacity to be upset that no one listened to her or took her seriously. (Not that her sister would have, even if she had told her the truth. Her sister was a trash character with zero redeemable qualities, that probably would have lit other women on fire to keep a known abuser warm but! I still think everything should have been handled differently.)

Overall, I'm clearly in the minority when it comes to this book and I truly wish I had something positive to say about it, other than 'that's a lovely cover'. Unfortunately, I don't and I genuinely cannot think of a person that I would ever suggest this to.

I'm grateful for the chance to read it, but I'm even more grateful to be done.

Thanks to North Star Editions for sending me an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review. This does not affect my thoughts about the book in any way.

This is the best possible way I could articulate my thoughts about this book, but it is unfortunately, very terrible. I rarely DNF when I’ve progressed to 41%, but I cannot say anything that makes this book redeemable. I am part of the minority who disliked this and these are just my thoughts.

CWs/TWs: Sexual Assault, Suicide, Depression, Mental Illness, Adult/Minor Relationship, Pedophilia, Misogyny, Sexual Harassment, Sexism

Bell’s writing paints an eerily atmospheric picture. It is poetic and has lots of potential but is very dragging. Almost halfway through and I could see why other readers did not like this at all. With these amount of CWs, you’d think the writer would’ve handled these issues in a manner that compliments the story and its main character’s purpose, but the execution was bad. I am not intentionally being mean, but this story made me so uncomfortable, especially with the Adult/Minor relationship and how Temperance dealt with SA. The FMC’s goal was to provide for and protect her sister, which I have nothing against, and SA survivors do not owe the world their story, but Tempe was clearly protecting her sister and she failed to do so by hiding substantial information from her, defending her abuser by disguising his actions as rejection. This was a constant reminder throughout the book that it just lost how crucial this should’ve been addressed. In the end, her sister ends up with a pedophile who preyed on her emphasizing how he’s “pushing her for another child” despite her not being ready and our main character loses her mind. It strayed away from the purpose of the story as a whole. I am not trying to be harsh here, but if you want to write a book that says “fuck the patriarchy” then don’t write a book where men still win.

I simply LOVE this book. An atmospheric, haunting tale of one woman's fight to have her voice heard and protect what she loves in the face of truly chilling evil forces. Spooky as it is, I adore the setting of historic Warbler and wish I could just sink into it forever (maybe without the threat of missing women, though). This is a must-read!

While the atmosphere was incredible and the bare bones of the mystery were creative, this book suffers from a rash and impulsive main character incapable of thinking things through or gathering evidence. There was a lot of circular thinking that grew very tiresome.

Thank you to Crystal J. Bell, North Star Editions, Flux, and NetGalley for providing me an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own~ This review will be posted on my NetGalley and Goodreads accounts. Review published 11/27.

The Lamplighter is an atmospheric, bone-chilling, and character driven story that grabs you from the very beginning and does not let go until the end. This book was very very hard to put down. The story follows the main character, Temperance, as the town lamplighter who is following in her father's footsteps after his untimely passing. Soon however, things in the town start to fall apart as girls go missing and Temperance is blamed for them. This book has a wide array of characters, both lovable and also very creepy. The author does a really good job of making you question who exactly is the culprit. The descriptions for the town and environment were so realistic it was very easy to place myself in the town and follow along with the main character. I am 50/50 on the ending of the story. After I finished it, I reread it again two times to make sure that's what I read. I think the ending will shock readers in a good way. The Lamplighter is a great book that pulls you into the story and holds onto you through every mysterious and terrifying event. If you're looking for a spooky book tied in with historical fiction this book is for you.

First of all, I would like to thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read an e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review!

“It’s an honor to bring light to the dark.”

And what an honor it has been to read this book before it has been published. This book took my breath away. I laughed, I cried and at the end I simply couldn’t put it down.

In a small whaling village called Warbler, best known for its lucky ship figureheads, every night a fog creeps up from the forest. Over time, people have disappeared into the fog to never return. When Temperance’s father dies, she takes over his role as the lamplighter; a position synonymous with safety and protection.
After the disappearance of a young local girl, Tempe struggles to keep her livelihood and tries to find answers to the girl’s disappearance in order to secure her position and ease her consciousness. When the answers she finds consists of a monster, death and lies, Tempe must choose which path to take in order to protect herself and the people she loves.

The Lamplighter is an atmospheric gothic horror novel with supernatural tones set in the 19th Century. We follow Temperance in her journey as she faces accusations, problems and obstacles as a young local girl goes missing in Warbler. The world building is done very well, the author did a good job in giving Warbler a certain macabre feeling. I loved that the book was packed with enough detail to give me a clear image in my mind of what Warbler looks like, but not too much to be annoying.

“The truth is I have nothing to prove. I am enough and always have been. I learn from my mistakes and become stronger because of them.”

Our protagonist Temperance is a very headstrong young woman trying to navigate life after losing her father and generating income for her family. Tempe doesn’t trust easily and is determined to fix every problem herself without burdening her loved ones with her problems. Tempe sometimes got on my nerves, because she doesn’t seem to learn from her mistakes. After getting in so much trouble for withholding information/”lying”, you would think she would stop diving head first into things by herself. Her struggle with being a woman in her time, her word being worth less than that of a man, is heartbreaking. Tempe always had the best interest of the people around her at heart and in the end that was her undoing.

“A man can make mistakes. A man can change his mind. A woman? No. If she makes a mistake, she is unfit. If she changes her mind, she is fickle.”

I am so grateful to have received an e-arc from this book and am hoping that the epilogue gives promise to a sequel to this beautiful story. I would love to see a redemption arc for Tempe, spearheaded by her sister Prudence.
The fact that this is the author’s debut is giving me chills. This book is now one of my absolutely favorites thanks to the ambience the author gave this book. I cannot wait to see what else Crystal J. Bell has in store for us!

I was so fortunate to receive an ARC of this book and I loved it! It was so atmospheric and mysterious with a delicious amount of women empowerment & feminism! I literally had NO IDEA what to expect from this one when it came to the horror aspect. I wasn’t sure if it would have magical realism or not and it did not disappoint! I live for the feeling of not knowing what is going to happen next.

Warbler was so creepy and yet somehow so cozy all at once? The ambience was everything to me. I really like Temperance as a character and was so invested in her journey as she dedicated herself to figuring out who was causing a trail of murders in her small village. The whole concept of her being a lamplighter was so fun to read.

Overall I would 100% recommend this one for fans of thrillers / YA horror!!

Received an arc from NetGalley in exchange for honest opinion, thanks!

This is my life. Warbler is my home. Who am I to let women be harmed when I can do something about it?
Even if that means becoming a monster myself.
I'm my father's daughter, after all. [...]
There is an evil in Warbler, and I am the only one who knows about it.

First, there was a cover. A dark and mysterious, beautifully drawn cover, full of mist, roots, darkness and mysteries. It caught my eye. Enchanted me with its atmosphere. Couldn't pass the opportunity to check what story it hides.

And then, there was a story.
A story about a town near water, with great boats and not great people. A town inhabitet by evil and darkness, full of flaws, mistakes and fear. They walk through streets boldly, because Warbler is their place on Earth. No justice awaits for them, as they are the ones setting the rules.
Is there a place, in such world, for a young woman craving equity?

"The Lamplighter" is neither a happy nor bright story, but hells on Earth – it's a fucking good one. It's supposed to be YA horror, but I genuinely believe it could proudly stand at first place of adult category. The dread, the Gothic, the chills. You cannot make this up. I was served and satisfied, fall in love with Warbler's ghost tale, just to gladly have a heart broken, shattered and scattered through the orchard ground later. It's so good. I can't even find my words.

I live for such books.

THIS. STORY. Prepare to be swept into the darkly atmospheric 19th century village of Warbler, where Tempe has the critical job of keeping the lamps lit and the villagers safe from an unnatural fog, a role assumed from her dead father, and not one usually occupied by women. But when villagers start to go missing, Tempe is blamed, and she must fight not only to prove her innocence—and keep her family safe and provided for—but also to uncover the monster responsible, before it’s too late for them all. Crystal weaves a lush and twisty story, with characters you will fall for and a world that is somehow both cozy and unsettling. You won’t be able to stop flipping pages late into the night, anxious to discover what lurks around each corner. Treat yourself to this absolute gem! You’ll thank me later.

Thank you to Crystal J. Bell and NetGalley for the eArc copy of this hauntingly wonderful debut novel!

Temperance is the lamp lighter for the small town of Warbler. There is something a mist in the fog. People are going missing, and suspicions are high. Superstitions are running rampant. Will Temperance get to the bottom of what's going on in time!?! The clock is ticking!

What a great debut novel! This is a young adult horror novel that will keep you on end. You'll end up thinking you know what happens and then bam... back to the drawing board.

The writing was easy to follow along with no confusion. The plot was chef kisses, and although this book is YA, I'm 30 years old, and I absolutely enjoyed it and loved the thrill!

If you're looking for your next bone-chilling story to creep you out but also keep you super intrigued, then buckle up because you've just found it!

The Lamplighter by Crystal J. Bell was a fun story with a creative idea and setting. I loved the theme and the first half of the book. The mystery had me intrigued and the terror and wonder of what is making people go missing in this small whaling town was a totally brilliant idea.

However, I did not enjoy much of the second half of the book. I got irritated a lot with Tempe and the choices that she made, which ultimately led to an ending that made me frustrated. I guess I just wanted more from the ending, or more suspense and thrill. I felt like I knew what was going to happen in the last 25% of the book which was saddening as there was so much potential.

These are just my thoughts though! Please read this story and build your own ideas and opinions!

Thank you so much to NetGalley and the author for allowing me to read this lovely story.

Creepy and compelling. If you’re looking for a spooky, atmospheric story with plot twists and mystery, this story is a must-read.

The setting of Warbler, a coastal whaling village, is brought to life by the author’s lush descriptions. Tempe, the main character, is complex and relatable. There is so much tension woven within the scenes. I was on edge the entire time while Tempe uncovered the truth behind the vanishing villagers. I LOVED this book!

This is a gothic historical gaslamp fantasy novel that transports readers to the eerie whaling village of Warbler. Fog shrouds the streets and only the lamplighter can keep the townsfolk safe. Temperance steps into the role of lamplighter after the tragic death of her father. Despite proving her competence, she faces resistance from a society unwilling to trust a woman with the responsibility of providing safety and protection.

As her position becomes increasingly precarious, Tempe's quest for answers leads her to unsettling truths about the village's figureheads and her own father's mysterious death. Her warnings about a lurking monster fall on deaf ears, even among her family. Tempe is thrust into a harrowing journey where she must choose between self-preservation and speaking out, risking her safety and that of her sister to bring light to the darkness of the town.

Bell masterfully crafts an atmosphere of quiet, creeping dread that permeates every page and made me so anxious. The gothic elements are reminiscent of Victorian-era folklore, serving as a cautionary tale about the dangers lurking in the dark. The novel's tension is palpable, making it a gripping read that is anxiety-inducing and yet utterly unputdownable.

Temperance is a compelling protagonist whose struggle for independence in an unfair world resonated deeply with me. Her fear and uncertainty, juxtaposed with her determination, add layers of complexity to her. I also love her relationships with those around her, even if they all frustrated me when they didn't listen to her.

The Lamplighter is a heart-wrenching tale that combines the chilling elements of gothic fiction with the timeless struggles of a young woman seeking her place in a society that constantly undermines her. It stands as a modern classic in the genre, evoking the same sense of eerie enchantment found in the works of literary giants. I highly recommend this for fans of gothic fiction and those who appreciate stories that leave a lasting impact.

This book was a very slow burn and cozy read. The atmosphere was great and I could see myself in this small coastal town specially each night, walking through the empty streets as the fog creeped in.

If you read this book expecting horror you might be a bit disappointed. The book felt like Bridgerton meets Supernatural.

We follow Temperance, the first woman to become a lamplighter. She has taken over her dad’s job and the town doubts that she is fit for the job. So she will try and prove them wrong.

Temperance is also worried about keeping her mom and sister safe as well as to earn enough money to bring food to the table.

Things get worse when a girl goes missing. She is not the first person to disappear in this town and she will not be the last.

Despite the book being more about social status, relationships, trust and female empowerment, the ending was quite unique and does merge horror with fantasy.

If you like slow paced, gothic, atmospheric stories in a historic setting, this might be a treat for you.

I'm a ship with no tail wind, stagnant and helpless on the great ocean
Thank you NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest review
~3.75 stars rounded up ~
The protagonist of our story, Temperance (better known as Tempy) is the town lamplighter, after the death of her father, and in this small port village set in the 19th century, there is doubt of her competence to do her job and more so after the disappearance of a girl in town. Temperance is determined to discover what is happening, even if she fears that the fog has made her go crazy or that the villagers will believe the same.
Women are capable of creating human life. It is a power that even the most misogynistic man can recognize and value. Without women, there can be no sons. No daughter. Men certainly play their part well. But they do not grow and support that life with their own bodies.
This book starts so beautifully, the prose is lush and demands attention to every last word. The pacing of the story is very stagnant at times, with the middle dragging along, but when the plot is plotting, the deep-rooted horror that sits in your stomach is palpable. However, I felt that the side characters were extremely one-dimensional, the constable behaved like a stereotypical constable, and the designated mean girl in town was mean to Temperance, but overly flirty with men. The atmosphere achieved unknown creepiness, but familiar comfort at the same time, which added to that feeling of distrust of what was going on, and that things may not be as they seemed at first glance which definitely adds to the overall vibes of the book that I adored.
Overall, I definitely recommend this book if you love young adult horror, or are even trying to submerge yourself in the horror genre and want a horror book that will evoke anxiousness as to what will happen next, and force you to feel the discomfort and fear that the characters feel on page.

Well that was sick and twisted and I feel sick to my stomach 😃

I will say it takes a lot of courage going that route with the ending though.

I thought this book had a very palpable atmosphere, and an eery and unsettling mystery that was afoot. I’m glad to report that the twist took me by surprise.

I would have definitely rated this higher, but the book needed another round of editing. It could be over explanatory, and could have used to have some sentences tightened up. It had great bones and the author is very talented!

If you get scared easily, you may want to steer clear of this one! ‘Twas spooky! A good pick for October though 🕯️

It’s an honor to bring light to the dark.

And it was an honor for me to read this book.

Chilling, daunting, I was mesmerised by everything, and I literally mean everything.

Plot, characters, lore (I personally would have loved having more lore to sate my thirst for knowledge and understanding), pacing, an amazing book cover, but most of all - the writing. Now, this was some damn good writing to read. And if Bell is going to write other books she for sure will have a buyer. Shoots hand up, me!

Temperance made me cry, Josiah made me cry, Molly made my heart crack. Prudence nearly made me throw my Mac on the ground for how hard I wanted to slap her. This was the effect this book hand on me even if deep down I knew I couldn't really hate her for thinking the way she did. Every page gave me anxiety, each time Tempe seemed to finally find her way out, to finally find the way towards the light out of a chasm full of darkness we were back to where we started.

I feel very proud of myself for figuring out the mystery behind the disappearances before we were actually told, even if I was NOT expecting this ending. No, this is one of those endings where you scream until you have no more breath to spend.

Yes, there was some scenes, in terms of thoughts that the main character had that for me just did not make sense, but at the end they did not hinder the reading in any way.

This is the first time I truly want to buy an actual copy of the book after reading the arc. The way Bell played with us until the end should be illegal.

Now beware, there are some trigger warning that people need to know before reading. Such as:
-S.A.
-Mysogeny.
-Self Immolation and Murder.
-gore in very few but strong scenes.
-Alcoholism associated to a secondary characters.

This was such an entertaining ride, one of the best.

Thank you NetGalley and Flux for this ARC in exchange of an honest review.

4.75⭐️ This might be one of the best YA novels I’ve read in years, possibly ever! Atmospheric and so well-written with beautiful language evocative of some of my favorite historical novels, this was a pleasure to read. I spent the first 60% or so waiting for the horror to kick in, and when it did I wasn’t disappointed. I’d consider that a slight pacing issue since the last 40% was significantly different in tone, with the beginning half reading like a small town mystery and the latter half a supernatural horror with a twist ending and unreliable narrator. I LOVED the ending but other readers be warned: this ending is a little more open-ended than most traditional books in the YA genre, so that may affect your enjoyment.

Tempe herself was a fantastic, well fleshed out protagonist, one who sometimes doubts herself, makes mistakes, and is sometimes frustrating to read while acknowledging her circumstances, staying steadfastly devoted to her family and job, and sticking to her values. The themes of feminism and female friendship as well as the foil between the sisters was subtly alluded to throughout and made the epilogue that much more satisfying. I’d highly recommend this book, especially for fans of YA horror like Small Favors and House Of Salt And Sorrows, or even adult horror like Mexican Gothic. I’m so glad I got this book as an ARC so I can be on the lookout for a special edition to buy when it’s published!

Huge thanks to Netgalley, the publisher, and author for this Advanced Reader Copy! This review is my honest opinion and offered voluntarily!

Now, what was the point of any of that? I was really excited to read this book. Gothic horror set at a 19th century whaling village? In theory, this had all the ingredients for me to love it, but unfortunately it completely failed on the execution.
The characters in this book are insufferable. Tempe, the main girl, kept making the worst possible decisions, which made it impossible to root for her. The villain was extremely obvious and I correctly guessed the reveal of what happened to the missing girls early on in the book. On top of that, the villain had no personality or depth apart from being evil and infuriating. And speaking of infuriating: I HATED Tempe's sister. We kept being told how Pru was "the best of all of them" but actually she was just judgmental, selfish and willfully ignorant. Like, why would you put a creepy man the age of your own father above your sister, just because he wrote you some love letters? Bitch, wake up.
I also found that Tempe's internal monologue felt way too modern for a nineteenth century setting. And what's the point of putting modern-day feminism in a historical time period if by the end the evil men and ignorant women throwing other women under the bus still win? I hated it.
One thing I did mostly like was the writing (apart from feeling too modern) and some of the horror elements, which were creative and creepy, but should've been explored more in depth, as barely anything is explained.

I will wait. Holding out for the light to catch.

What can I say but WOW. Sped through this in two days, The Lamplighter had me hooked from page one and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time!

The dreary Warbler setting is perfect for this mystery, with our main character Temperance. This story is a rollercoaster of emotion, with twists and reveals in every chapter. Tempe, as many people call her, is a proud lamplighter, taking over her father’s position after his death. Being a lamplighter is what it sounds like, lighting the street lamps at dusk, extinguishing them at dawn, but in this case, it’s to help the people of Warbler not get lost in the towns’ strange thick fog that rolls in every night. When a girl goes missing and everything Tempe knows and believes is called into question, she’s determined to get to the bottom line, no matter what. She doesn’t know who - or what - lies in the fog, but she’s determined to find out.

This book is perfect for any horror or gothic fan out there, looking to expand their bookshelf.

This was really well written, lyrical and poignant.

The whole novel was atmospheric, very character driven with mysteries moving the plot along. Some themes that are addressed are sister dynamics, asking for help, responsibility and misogyny. I love how much insight we got into the main characters motivations. She definitely makes difficult choices with real consequences and grows throughout the novel, while staying true to who she is as a person.

I don’t see a lot of reviews mention the mystery throughout this book, which for me would be one of the predominant genres (besides fantasy). It’s very well paced and enough moments for you to doubt what you know and who you can trust. So engaging!

I wouldn’t necessarily classify this as young adult, since some of the content is quite heavy. Please check trigger warnings.

All in all, would definitely recommend if you want an eerie, magical realism, character driven story.

Tempe is the towns lamplighter and her families only means of support after her father's death. When two girls disappear the town question her ability to do her job. Girls disappear in the fog is nothing new in this town.
The first thing that caught me about lamplighter was the description of the fog. I could feel Temperance's anxiety as she lighted the lamps of her New England fishing town. I felt her struggle trying to hold on to reality and her relationships as things around her crumble. I found it beautiful and haunting.
I was able to guess one of the twists pretty early and then was thrown for loop later on. It was quite an adventure! I would definitely recommend this for fans of YA, horror and historical fiction.

This is a slow burn, but it’s so worth it. It was as if I were in a seaport in the 1800s, and it’s clear the author has put a lot of time and effort into accuracy.

The ending blew me away. I’m still reeling.
I’m a sucker for a mystery with hints of horror and mythology, and this story delivers! You should definitely check this out on May 21st!

My first Netgalley Advance Reader Copy and I am so happy I got this opportunity! What a great way to start my ARC journey.
I loved this story. The historical fiction mixed with this eerie creepy vibe was such a cool combo. The imagery was so detailed I could just about feel the fog swallowing me up! This was a great read for the winter while living in a coastal town in New England. I only gave this one 4 stars because it was a slow burn, which is not a bad thing, but I did find myself getting a bit antsy halfway through and I started dying for a plot twist. But when It happened I was not disappointed. A great historical fiction/ thriller/ light horror.
