If the last story that you read about a sentient tree was "The Giving Tree", you're in for a treat.

"The Last Tree" is the story of a tree that miraculously survives Earth's extinction and is now studied by a race of humanoids, with the intention to replicate it in their new home planet. Xym is one of these humanoids, and s/he carries the stigma of a genetic flaw which, despite all her many accomplishments, makes her a pariah in the perfect world of the Base. How these two meet and end up on a high note of hope for the future is the story of this book.

Combining scientific facts (explained in detail in the end notes) with fantasy, "The Last Tree" threads through several subjects (truth, friendship, trust, the importance of being 'different') along with an underlying ecological message. While this mix may seem peculiar, the final result is surprisingly coherent and satisfying.

I loved that the progression of the characters is gradual and therefore believable, and unlike "The Giving Tree", Fitz is a tree with a lot of personality, carries much of the action, and is central to the story's conclusion. In fact, the message of "The Last tree" stays with you long after you finish reading it.

Intended for readers 13 and above, "The Last Tree" is a fantasy that will please teen readers interested in ecopunk and ecological subjects as much as science fiction.

Beautifully written and emotionally charged. It connects the reader to the story on every level. Wise, immersive and poetic. Highly recommended.
