Clio has learned a horrible truth. Now, what will she do with the knowledge? She has always planned to escape The Queen Trials ahead of the killing round. She doesn't want to be a queen, she just wants to survive.
But if she chooses survival, can she live with herself? Clio has always been destined for more. She just didn't know how much she would be asked to give.
Penelope Wright spent a quarter of her life on the east coast and the rest in Washington state. She worked her way through college in restaurants, hospitals, factories, and everything in between, finally graduating summa cum laude from the University of Washington after an absurdly long time. She loves both traditions and new experiences, and will try anything once, except skydiving, which is a hard no. She lives north of Seattle with her husband and two amazing teenagers.
The book started off very slow and I was getting frustrated waiting for it to get started. There was no recap - it was just like idled. Once it finally took off it went full speed and never looked back. The story was exciting and the games were even more twisted. I can hardly wait for the next one. I do wish, however, that series books would put recaps in. The time between releases is great and it's hard to remember everything especially when you read as much as I do.
I suppose I should get a review in for this book before I finish the next one and have two I need to review, because I started it this morning but am almost through it. This series keeps getting better and better. This book did not have a dull moment and I am fascinated by the world that Wright has created. Clio is ao thoughtful and such an engaging protagonist and the writing is so calculated. In this book when I began to be a bit frustrated with Clio's thoughts, it later made sense, and fit completely into the story. As I've said in a previous review, the story itself is so fluid and real that I feel like she had this entire story percolating in her brain before she even started writing. The farther through the series, the more pieces there are that start to fall into place, and in a satisfying way, not in a contrived manner. Yet, the mystery and questions are still piling up and I know there will be answers, but in the meantime, it ensures I have to return back to the Rotunda and their mad games every spare moment I get. This book gave us a very interesting look into some of the other princesses. This book covers the killing round and I was very sad about one demise, but I do not want to spoil who it was. This book gets more graphic, violence wise, than the previous ones, though it ups the ante in the next even more. Overall though, this series just keeps getting better!
This series reminds me of a CW supernatural or fantasy show. The first season starts out somewhat entertaining but after multiple seasons the show has completely derailed to over the top cheesiness. That is what this series is to me. It is so stupid at this point but for some reason I can’t stop reading. I know when I’m done I’ll be mad at myself for wasting my time.
Why didn’t the Prince just stab the king and takeover?
I’m a little bit sad every time I finish another of these books because as much as I am dying to find out what happens, I don’t want it to be over. This is one of those series that hooks you and keeps you guessing. Every book ends in a complete cliffhanger. Seeing the shopping mall through Clio’s eyes is fascinating
Still not sure about the Prince… and now I desperately want to know what Snow’s plan is
Can't put this one down. I have been. Trying to make it last but couldn't help reading through it. Full of details, danger, and intrigue it's a great edition to the series. Can't wait for the next one!!!
In two days I have read 5 books ..couldn't put them down.. only to find out I have another book to read..so excited...and yet mad, November can't come fast enough
