Prescott, Harley and Klein's 5th edition provides a balanced, comprehensive introduction to all major areas of microbiology. Because of this balance, "Microbiology, 5/e" is appropriate for students preparing for careers in medicine, dentistry, nursing, and allied health, as well as research, teaching, and industry. Biology and chemistry are prerequisites. The Fifth Edition has been updated extensively to reflect the latest discoveries in the field.
A good and complete microbiology textbook with a classical approach to the subject. While this isn't my favorite textbook it's an excellent choice for anyone taking university microbiology courses. I would love an update on the approach towards one that encompasses a more ecological point of view, after all, microorganisms are a fundamental part of the environment and ourselves.
Not too shabby a textbook. Served me very well along my undergrad studies, in which I had three Microbiology courses (basic, applied and environmental), so it's pretty well-rounded. Nicely illustrated too, and easy to follow, and has also the bonus of some very interesting anecdotes and curiosities.
