DNF for now. (Page 98)

Dear Maggie, I hope you see my review as constructive feedback aimed at fostering growth, rather than discouragement.

The writing in this series needs substantial refinement for it to truly thrive. Expressing my thoughts with care, I must stress the importance of improving both the composition and storytelling elements. While recognizing that every journey has a starting point, it's imperative to address the shortcomings in the editing process prior to publication. Maggie, it's essential to consider making changes in those responsible for this oversight.

It feels like tossing spaghetti at a wall and hoping it sticks. The abundance of grammatical errors, along with confusing sections and difficult-to-follow content, detracted from the enjoyment of reading this piece. These errors consistently disrupted my immersion in the story, abruptly propelling me out of the story and back onto my couch, far from the intended immersion in the Underworld.

Regrettably, I found the lack of world-building, character development, and overall coherence to be significant drawbacks. The narrative lacked a smooth flow. The story felt disjointed, with the main character struggling to adapt to her new life, and an overreliance on dramatic language rather than vivid scene descriptions and character emotions. In essence, the writing came across as amateurish, leaving me with strong feelings of this content being more of first draft quality.

While I paid for this book with my own money, I'm sharing my honest opinion in this review. I intend to revisit and amend my feedback once I've completed reading the book.

Love finding new worlds with fresh new ideas, and this book delivers. I didn't love the FMC, but the MMC was everything you wanted him to be. I'm excited to see where the author takes the storyline in the upcoming books.

I really hate to rate this so low but this book fell so flat for me. I am genuinely shocked how bad the editing is. I know that self published authors don’t have as many resources but I am very confused how so many were missed?

There were errors every few pages if not every page. It became very distracting and I was unable to enjoy the story. It was almost as no proofreading was done and it was printed as is.

I feel like the author had potential to have a great story but there was no depth or polish. There was zero world building and it was like we started halfway through the story. We really did not learn much about the two main characters and I see the second book isn’t even going to be about them? Just disappointed.

I read soulmates and I was hooked. However, he knows her since she was a little girl (he's a grow-ass man). This one gave me vibes of Jacob and Renesmee and that imprinting thing. Sorry, but I don't like when the FMC is a child when the much older MMC meets her.

Fated mates , son of Lucifer, the Underworld, this was a sure sign I wanted to read this badly and I was not disappointed at all. This is a dual POV another sign I would love, as I love reading both perspectives rather than the one, it adds so much I think. The world building was really good, I love the underworld set up and hierarchy, I thought it was really unique. I loved Lucia and Arafel, loved the hot as hell demons, the storyline/plot was brilliant , this is a great start to what is clearly going to be a great series! Can’t wait for the next.

⭐⭐

There are fantasy books with romance in them and there are romance books with fantasy in them, iykyk.

Soul of Light and Shadow falls explicitly into the latter category. And that’s OK!

However, regardless of whether a book is a fantasy with romance or a romance with fantasy, the writing, characters, plot, etc should still feel well-done and engaging. And unfortunately, this book fell flat for me in that regard.

Insta-love rarely, if ever, works for me, and that, coupled with the lackluster world-building, uncertain use of a fantasy setting, predictable, formulaic plot, and one-dimensional characters, made this book not the one for me.

But maybe it could be the one for you!

The concept of the book was so intriguing! I was so excited! However this book could use some more editing. The pacing was inconsistent, there were many sections that did not have enough information, and the part that really took me out of the book was word choice, clarity, and continuity. There were so many instances where words and sentences were repeated too many times in the same sentence or paragraph. It just did not flow. I think if this book went through a round or two more of editing, it could be great! I commend the author on imagination and creating such an exciting world to dive into.

The premise of the book and characters initially were very interesting. The story progressed without enough content and context in some area. The pacing felt off, with Lucia’s arrival to the Underworld and how only bits and pieces were coming together slowly. Her sudden cold shoulder to Arafel after his injuries despite the feelings between them was almost childish.

Her character waffled between being receptive to this new life to wanting to go back to the way things were, which obviously she couldn’t do.

I don’t think I will continue the series but appreciate the opportunity to have read this first one to know this is just not for me.

The only saving grace about this book is the stunning* cover and believe me its even more pretty in person. The amount of typos and grammar errors is unbelievably embarrassing. The FMC was first described as having dark brown hair… then blonde… THEN mahogany! Which is it?? 🤣

this is a 3.5 for me. Not every book is for every reader, and this was just not the book for me. I think the premise was really cool but for a lot of the book I just wanted more. More world building, more depth for the characters especially the FMC (I will say the MMC had a little more depth with him) and a little more expansion on the writing in certain scenes which felt a little glossed over. Again, the premise was a cool one and the I could sort of feel the chemistry between the characters, but I was just left wanting more. I think this could have been a really cool book, but it just wasn't for me as I may just have not vibed with the author's writing style, but I am sure for other people they will have a blast reading it.

This book is about Lucia who has always had an invisible companion following her through life hiding in the shadows protecting her and being there for her when she needed him. But the day comes when her mother dies and her life changes when evil threatens her and her protector needs to come into the light to keep her safe that she learns who he is. His name is Arafel and he is a lord of hell, son of Lucifer, king of dreams and her soul mate. In trying to keep her safe he takes her to the only place he can protect her and that is the underworld in the land of dreams. But there are forces at work to break the tie between these two because in breaking her and her tie to the king of dreams it puts the land of dreams at risk and could have far reaching consequences for the underworld and human world as well.

Perfect amount of spice and story

I really liked the story that the author was telling and the potential for more books in the series for the other brothers. I did find that there were a few typos throughout but you can easily overlook and forgive that because it’s such a good story and pretty good writing! It kept me engaged and I couldn’t put it down. Read it in a day!

This one was a bit of a trudge at times. I love the story, the sons of Lucifer looking for the other half of their souls, the nuance it can have for each of them. I love that they each have different roles in the underworld and that opens it up for each of their stories to be told.

Arafel (though I truly loathe that name) is a great “protector” MMC, and he’s got the devotion down. Although for a Lord of the Underworld, my guy seems to have no idea what he’s doing. But he peels pears for her, which he did once, I don’t even remember it happened it just sounded like he was eating a pear and then gave her one, but we literally never stop hearing about. He forbids himself from succumbing to his temptation for Lucia…for a few pages. There’s a rule that you can’t have a relationship with anyone from the living world and it seems super important for a chapter and then nope we’re just throwing that out the window, immediately, and never addressing it again. Zero consequences after that, which just leads you to ask, why have it at all? It brings in opposition to the match in storytelling terms, but meant nothing.

Lucia is a bit all over the place. I really couldn’t peg down a personality type for this FMC. There’s a lot of her telling how she is vs the book showing how she is. We get nothing from her normal life after after her mother passes and it’s just weirdly fine and dandy that she up and left to go to the underworld (then [spoiler] she goes back for a minute and literally everything is fine? Like she hadn’t disappeared for weeks? Months? Honestly, the timeline isn’t clear). I wish we could’ve spent more time in Lucia’s house in the underworld, those scenes showed a lot more of her personality than most of the rest of the book did and it was very short lived.

It’s got a lot of contradictions. The books she claims to “call to her” but were actually initially given to her by someone? The first by the librarian and the second by Kharon. Then a few pages later she’s like “these books came to me for a reason”??? Weird power placement there. That happens a few times, when something is said and then she contradicts it a few pages later. She spends so much of this book crying (understandably so) and then near the end makes an odd comment “I never cry.” Like girl, yes you do, you cry constantly. Things like that.

This book could have used about another dozen rounds of editing. It was all over the place. Random capitalized words in the middle of a sentence, misspellings everywhere, sentences that just didn’t make sense, repetitive descriptions and statements, it needs a lot of work. The formatting also drove me absolutely crazy. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book where the text wasn’t formatted to fit flush with the margins of the page. That’s more of a personal preference, it just makes the text look choppy to me. Like a draft you wrote in Word without formatting it.

I’m still going to read the next one, I’m curious and I like reading newer indie authors. We’ll see how that one goes!

First of all, as someone who dreams of self-publishing my own novel, I would never want one of my reviews to discourage or denigrate a fellow writer. I respect the fact that Maggie had the discipline, creativity, and tenacity to create this book. I bought it in paperback, and it is a beautiful volume. The artwork is captivating. Maggie should be proud she had the courage to put herself onto the page and into our hands.

That said, the quality of the writing is not where it needs to be. The book is rife with typos, bizarre syntax, and odd word choices. For example, in one sentence, she chose the word "whole" when it only made sense to write "whorl." That one took me more than a minute to work out. These odd "brakes screeching" moments in which I had to stop and try to figure out what she actually meant to say happened so frequently that it was impossible to stay immersed in her story. This is especially disappointing when her ideas are actually very intriguing. The universe she dreamed up has huge potential, but it wasn't executed well.

She shifts back and forth from writing in present to writing in past tense within the same paragraph. A few chapters in, I found myself thinking, "There's no way this was edited," so I flipped to the front ISBN page, and to my surprise, "Magnolia Author Services" is credited for editing this novel. Now, I couldn't begin to guess exactly what editing services package Maggie obtained, but whatever she paid was too much. To call yourself a professional editor and let your name be attached to something with this many errors seems wild to me.

The book does a lot of "telling" and not nearly enough "showing." Things are constantly and repetitively spelled out, rather than allowing characters' actions and dialogue to reveal things to the reader. And she often uses the same word two or three times in a sentence, bogging down the flow of the prose. All of these things should have been addressed by a competent beta or editor.

Like I said, Maggie's idea for this universe is so solid, and this story could be INCREDIBLE. But she needs betas, and she needs much much MUCH better editing services. I truly hope she gets the help that she needs to improve future installments, because her imagination is immaculate, and her stories deserve to be told. I'd love to see the quality of the writing rise to the quality of her creativity.

3.5 STARS ✨

I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC of Soul of Light and Shadow from Booksprout in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Soul of Light and Shadow is the first book of the Lords of the Underworld series, and it provides a promising start. The premise intrigued me instantly and the moment I saw fated mates and the Underworld, I knew that I had to give this a go. Soul of Light and Shadow is a dual POV fantasy novel that follows twenty one year old Lucia who has grown up with 'imaginary friends' who have protected her her whole life, and the King of Dreams, Arafel, one of the many sons of Lucifer whose souls were split in half. Lucia has the other half of said soul, and, after the loss of Lucia's mother's life, the reality of her protectors come to light.

The concept of the underworld being split into sections and being ruled by Lucifer's sons was really fascinating and a unique concept. I loved Arafel and Lucia, and the plot does have a lot of potential, but unfortunately the book was a challenge to get through. I would strongly recommend that, if possible, there could be a further beta read through. There were a lot of mistakes where the first letter of the word was wrong, a lot of grammatical errors and a lot of sentences that felt a bit jumbled. Of course, as an early copy, you do understand that everything isn't going to be perfect, but not to the extent where it is difficult to read. There were also a couple of continuity issues, such as Lucia's hair being described as dark, and then blonde, and then dark again. I feel like the book could have had a higher rating if the writing feet a little more fluent.

Either way, I do feel like this series will continue to be a good one, and that Soul of Light and Shadow was just the beginning of Arafel and his brother's journey.

I am always a sucker for underworld stories and Soul of Light and Shadow did not disappoint! This book had such a unique take on how the underworld was run, with the realm being split into 5 sections - each looked after by one of Lucifer’s sons. In order to protect her sons, Nicola, their mother, casts a spell on them in childhood that ripped each of their soles in half, leaving one half with them and the other half to manifest within a human. With only half of their power, the brothers maintain the Underworld, trying to fight off the Drude that wants to take over, while endlessly hunting for the other half of their souls. The first book in the Lords of the Underworld series follows Arafel and a human, Lucia, as they try to navigate their new and unusual predicament while hunting for a way to reclaim the other half of his soul. But what will he do when they finally get to know each other and he discovers he’s found more than what he was initially searching for?

This book was a fast paced, easy read! Lots of twists and I loved every bit of it. Plus, the chemistry between Arafel and Lucia was intoxicating! Who doesn’t love a good monster romance?? I wish we would’ve been given a little more background on the 4 other brothers, but that might be something that is further explained in the following books. The magical system seemed pretty simple and it worked well with the flow of the story. I am excited to see what the rest of the series brings!.

Amazing story with a few cons…

⚠️ Some slight spoilers ahead!!! ⚠️
.
.
.
.
.
👎 Cons first —
- This is a super fast paced book, I read it in less than a day— so the con is that it’s over too soon!
- There are *several* errors in this book including typos, missing letters, punctuation, and all that but also a couple of instances where it doesn’t make sense. Like Lucia’s hair color, for one.
- Editing could have been a thousand times better.
- Descriptive wording is a little repetitive too.
- More spice than plot? Meh… ? More explained below

👍 Pros—
- Now, with all that said, the story is fascinating and I couldn’t put the book down. I quickly fell in love with Arafel, Lucia, and the world of this book.
- As for the spice— for the less than 400 page book, there’s quite a bit of spice…. But me personally? I don’t mind! That part is up for you to decide!!
- I am excited to see this series grow and I am now moving onto the second.

⏩ Moving Forward—
- I would love to see more world-building and character development— though these characters were quite nicely described given the brevity of this book.
- I would love for future books to be a bit longer… slow burns are great too!!
- Maybe a better editing team? We shall see how the next one plays out!!

💭 Final/Overall Thought:
- It is impossible not to love Arafel and Lucia… even if the writing leaves you a little wanting.
- The vibe is giving ACOTAR meets Little Nicky 😅

I loved the idea of this book. The storyline was interesting and I wanted the story to be what I think the author was intending for it to be.
I feel like the duel perspective was a great idea, but the main male character had more development than the female lead. I loved the idea of the world building but it could be more- it has serious potential.
There are many grammar errors and some strange sentences that would stop me in my tracks trying to figure out what was intended.
I could see this being at least a 4-5 book series if the author had some additional bata readers at least- people who can find some of the inconsistencies that were in the first book. An example is what color is of hair does the female lead have? It’s described as blonde at the beginning, displayed as dark hair in the art and in scenes she is described as having dark hair?
I truly hope this author keeps this world alive, gets some additional help with editing and world building and then republishes this book.
If you can over look some of the things mentioned above- give this series a go. I read it all in 2 days and I’ll be purchasing the second book later today.

I really enjoyed this book! It was super easy to read and follow along with, but still had decent world building and the romance between Arafel and Lucia was endearing. I thought the spice was good & really liked that the spice wasn’t the entire book - there was a plot here! Definitely paranormal romance but I enjoyed Maggie’s take on the underworld/Hell - definitely some Greek mythology influences there! I could be wrong but I also feel like Maggie was inspired by ACOTAR in places - & that bits of Arafel were inspired by Rhysand. However I will say there were a few minor plot holes (the biggest one I wondered about was why was such a huge deal made of Lucia starting to die from being in the underworld as a human but as soon as she offered part of her soul to Arafel, she can suddenly stay there and be fine? Is she still mortal or is she immortal now? I have questions!) & there were several inconsistencies with editing (typos, misspelled words, Lucia being referred to as blonde & then a few chapters later as having mahogany hair, etc.) but overall, I read this book in a little over a day and I really enjoyed it!

Soul of Light and Shadow by Maggie White is book one in the Lords of the Underworld Series. This is the first book I’ve read by the author but let me tell you it definitely won’t be the last! I cannot wait for the next book in this series. Holy crap, was this a good read! I couldn’t put my kindle down well. This is a paranormal romance that has some real smooth talking demons. (Hotness!) As always I recommend checking trigger warnings as it’s better to be safe than sorry.

This story has such an interesting twist on the dynamics of the Underworld how it’s split into sections ruled by the different sons of Lucifer. (But then again, I’m down when I see things like Underworld, Fated Mates, Lucifer… etc) I loved Lucia and Arafel, they were such great characters. The storyline/plot is there and this is a really good opening to what could be a great series! I’m looking forward to more!

Three times is the charm to leave my review! ✨

I enjoyed the refreshing approach of showcasing lords of different elements for the Underworld and how they are unit aiming for the same end goal.

Some things I wished for is more spice given the nature of the creatures having a strong connection and pull to one another. My favorite scene would be the aftermath of the touch from the incubus *chef’s kiss*. Another thing I’d love to know just a bit more is on the parent’s background since this evidently impacts the lords ability to be “restored” for the better.

Arafel & Lucia trusts in one another not knowing if it’ll work resonated in the fear of unknown humans have which is true. The oath made between the two to finally be connected forever and equals is something I enjoyed. There was an undertone of human and supernatural coexisting which may have been the hidden message or I thought too much into in a second.

I am excited to see where the series continues to develop! I’m moving onto the second book✨

Absolutely loved this book! I don't like to give spoilers in my reviews (just so ya know) before you continue reading. This is a dark romance you don't want to pass up. I never thought demon smut would be something I was into but turns out guess I got a little dark side. I loved how she didn't drag everything out. Honestly, she could of drug it out just a little more (the devil is in the details) pun intended. The underworld she has created in this book seems stunning & mysterious. Her vision has me intrigued. It's not satanic at all, just a human who is soul bound to one of Lucifer's sons. I literally couldn't put this book down. I could of had it read in a day, but life got in the way, unfortunately. Add this one to your smut TBR I would say it's a must read, & I read this one right after I finished the ACOTAR series & as most of you know you get in a bit of rut finding a great book after going into Parythian. Book two of this series is next, & I heard book 3 is releasing in October. Maggie has me hooked.

Found this book through tik tok & I was SO excited because I was so attracted to the idea of this book & this world. I DNF’d it about halfway through but picked it up again this week & glad I did because the ending had much better pacing than the beginning. There were many moments throughout the beginning where I just needed more context, more world building, etc… it felt like it would jump from a to b in a second and I found myself rereading pages bc I thought I missed something. I didn’t feel much of the emotional character development until the very end. And there definitely needs to be better editing! HOWEVER. I picked it up again because I really loved the concept. Like huge potential! And the ending is what added on more stars for me. I will probably read the next ones because I am curious to see if we can see improvement on the authors end and I just have my fingers crossed for the next books bc I want to love it!! I love the concept so much, so keep going Maggie!!

I really like the premise of the story, but like other reviews have mentioned, the grammatical errors, typos, and inconsistencies constantly took me out of the book.
There's changes in tenses and point of view many times throughout the entire book. There's even a sentence somewhere that's 2nd person point of view. Some of the spelling errors completely change words where you have to guess what the sentence is supposed to be saying. At one point Tartarus was misspelled as Taurus, for example.
There were so many instances of information being left out and then brought up later. The characters knew information they shouldn't have given the point of view.
At one point it's described Lucia was wearing sandals, and later in the scene she's barefoot.
I believe if there had been more editing and more attention to detail, this could have been good. I won't be continuing this series, but I do wish all the best to Maggie.

has the makings

This book has the makings of an excellent story. I love the plot and the characters of the book, both of which are why I kept reading and enjoying the story. However, it could be made better with further editing including fixing several plot holes, inconsistencies in character appearances, the timeline (hard to understand how much time has passed and how much the characters have before certain events), and further grammatical/structural errors. If you can look past these, which I didn’t have too much of a hard time doing cause I was enjoying and intrigued by the plot/characters, then I think you would find the plot to be interesting and the characters, especially their relationship, to be heartwarming and just amazing. I do plan to possibly read the next book in the series.

Just no

The amount of grammatical errors in this book is astonishing. I don't know if English wasn't their first language or what but they desperately needed an editor.

It also just grosses me out when the love interest watches their partner grow up and then courts them. I don't care that you're soulmates. Watching your future lover grow from infancy is disgusting.

The characters were uninteresting and one dimensional, the story was so dull it was torturous to keep reading it and I just gave up and DNF at 50%.

I normally don't knock people for what they like to read as I've had my fair share of questionable books but I genuinely don't understand the people giving this 3/4/5 stars. It just isn't a good book. You can't even zone out and read it to mellow out before bed. It's just that unlikable of a book.

Cuddly demon who will protect his soul bound at all costs; need I say more? Arafel is the son of Lucifer; & half of his soul is bound to a mortal. He must risk everything; including his life; to save her. This was action packed from the start! This book had everything I need in a fantasy romance. World building, character development; an incredible love story & so much more! This book really came alive for me in my mind like a movie! I am absolutely in love with the way @maggiewhitewrites writes! She had me captured by the first chapter. This was a page turner that was incredibly hard to put down. I quickly fell in love with Arafel & Lucia’s story. This has a HEA! I cannot wait to start book 2. Maggie; you’re amazing & you have such a kind heart! As an indie author I am so excited to see what other incredible things you write! I HIGHLY suggest adding this to your TBR!
