Craig Dunn is an amateur historian who lives in Nauvoo and earns a living practicing chiropractic and providing martyrdom trail and other tours. He asserts in the introduction, "This book I believe is the most accurate chronological rendition of the events associated with the martyrdom to date." I was disappointed in his lack of professionalism, but realizing his knowledge of the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith far exceeds mine, I carefully read the book a second time looking for an informative, concise account from Dunn's vast knowledge. This summary account is there for about the first 40 pages. But then his writing balloons into 10 to 20 pages for each of the last four days of the prophet's and patriarch's lives, including some undocumented stories, leading up to 5:15 pm Thursday, June 27th. Then Dunn backs up in time to add another chapter of several more pages explaining related details during that fateful day. Finally there is a chapter of several pages about the actual 5:15 murders followed by two chapters reviewing the hours following the murders. So many loosely documented fragments are informative and provide some good references but are not the concise, effective summary I was looking for. There is a final informative chapter about the prophet's political involvement leading to agreement with Elder Dallin H. Oaks (and co-writer Marvin S. Hill) in their conclusion, "The murder of Joseph and Hyrum Smith ... was ... a deliberate political assassination ... ."
I read this book after returning from a week long stay in Nauvoo, Illinois. My husband and I toured to Carthage, Illinois with the author as our guide. I found this book to be interesting and informative. Information was included that clarified the time period and people.
