Asphyxiaphilia: An extremely dangerous sexual practice involving the restriction or control of oxygen to the brain through suffocation or strangulation with the objective of achieving the ultimate orgasm.
Detective Jim Bannon is no ordinary detective. With a dress code of anything in black, short leather jacket, blue tinted spectacles and shoulder length hair, the claustrophobic and asthmatic inner-city, Dublin born detective is on the case of London’s most cunning and perverted serial killer.
A young woman has been brutally slain in a murderous act involving asphyxiaphilia. A connection between the victim and England’s largest online dating site is discovered.
It soon becomes a race against time to catch the deviant before the bi-curious and dangerously adventurous Robyn O’Brien, an astrology-loving Harley Street receptionist, falls victim to the killer’s insatiable lust.
Asphyxia is a fast paced thriller, full of unsavoury reality, deception, thrills, twists, warped eroticism and dark humour, that will leave you gasping for breath as you approach its climax!
Hi all! My first novel, Dysfunctional Romance!, is a hilarious Irish romcom, with over 160,000 followers on Twitter, was No 1 in Amazon's Top 100 Humour/Humor Chart, has 83 5* reviews on Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com...and continues to cause havoc throughout the world!
My second 'spiritual' romcom, Unholy Romance!, has 34 5* Amazon reviews.
My third book, Asphyxia, is a fast paced thriller, full of deception, thrills, twists, warped eroticism & dark humour, that will leave you gasping at the climax! It hit the number one spot in Amazon's International Crime and Mystery charts in the UK and USA in July 2014!(46 5* reviews on Amazon so far!)
My fourth book, Infallible, is a blood curdling thriller that will imprint itself on your psyche...permanently! NOT FOR THOSE EASILY OFFENDED! (25 consecutive 5* reviews on Amazon so far!)
My fifth opus, Fiend Street, (YA genre) is gorier than Twilight, creepier than Cirque Du Freak, more spellbinding than Harry Potter & damn bloody SCARY! Be afraid...be very afraid:-)
My latest book, Dysfunctional Romance 'The Break-Up!' is a sequel to my first romcom, and will make you laugh out loud, cringe, cry and feel faint!
About me? I'm a deeply passionate and energetic individual and want to rock your world, literally! I also want to make you laugh out loud so much that you get tinnitus...or scare the bejesus out of you and make you incontinent!
The story of Asphyxia was not quite as intriguing as the description blurb. The writing was good, and the development of some of the main characters is also good. The problem is that the plot lacked gradual revelation of clues (or even false clues) that would encourage the reader to consider suspects or solve the mystery. In other words, in a story that is a mystery (with no real romance) one should be able to engage the brain in solving the mystery. No such clues are given until the solution is simply unveiled at the end. The story and characters still engaged me as a reader, but a more intricate plot would have made it so much better. Not recommending this one, but I would be willing to read more from this author and hope for a more intricate plot.
I loved this book apart from the very end. A serial killer is on the loose and appears to have a sexual motive. The killings are liked to an online dating website and the owners decide to do some investigating. Don't know if the author got bored but the end chapter was really weak and unsatisfying
Derick Hudson's Asphyxia kept me entranced from page one. I finished the entire book in less than two days. One of my favorite characters, Detective Jim Bannon, an asthmatic, is in love with his boss's daughter. The gruff character of the boss is not excited about that at all. Detective Bannon spends most of his time trying to track down London's serial killer who is deep into asphyxiaphillia, a dangerous game that ends in murder. It appears he is getting his victims through a dating service.
This thriller has twists and turns along the way, a bit of dark humor, along with some tragedy in the Detective's personal life. There is some erotica mingled in the storyline at one point.
I can't say enough for the authors development of the characters. They are quite entertaining to the reader even though people are dying. There are things going on behind the scenes only the readers know for a while which is always intriguing. I will certainly continue reading Hudson's work and I highly recommend this book
First off This book deals with several serious subject including sexual dysfunction and serial killing. It is not necessarily for the squeamish or those of a non-liberal mind. that said I was not offended or particularly horrified despite some of the near pornographic levels of violence depicted.
What I did not like was the lack of facts. The book is set in the UK but fails to follow UK police ranks or police procedures whilst attempting to be a gritty reality type police procedural. These failings spoiled what otherwise might have been a good thriller worthy of higher ratings. These errors jarred every time they were mentioned. Judging by other quoted reviews, other readers have not noticed or did not care.
Finally at 80% done on the Kindle version the story ends leaving the remainder of the book as reviews and plot outlines of other books - annoying.
Found this mystery novel a very quick read. Detective Jim Bannon has to track down a sadistic serial killer. The plot moves along very well. Was somewhat of a short book to read (200 pages) Found the ending a little weak. Story ran out of gas so author ended it ? Hopefully Hudson will bring out another Jim Bannon mystery. I really enjoyed it. ! 4 stars out of 5 (ending cost it a star) This is a good fast read. Do not miss it !
After Dysfunctional Romance, I was expecting similar. While Derick Hudson doesn't disappoint in the story-telling, it didn't quite live up to expectation. Another great, fast-paced story, with a sinister, macabre plot, but sadly a weak ending (as others have said). It was all over just a bit too soon, for me.
'Asphyxia' is a good read that delves into the darker side of an erotic fetish. The storyline pulled me in and I had to keep reading. This book is a fast paced quick read. I liked how the storyline unfolded. The characters were quite good. I liked the mystery, the drama and the humor that ensued. A good add to your tbr list.
