What you have here is the outcome of more than five years of teaching grammar to the second years of the English department – Kénitra. As this is the first attempt at making it available in booklet format, your comments and suggestions as to layout and content are most welcome. In the process of preparing this booklet, three objectives have been targeted. The first objective is to cater for the needs of DEUG students of English grammar at Moroccan English departments. Thus I meant it to be useful in covering what is common to all English grammars. This is, I think what a foreign student looks for in a grammar book. Secondly, I meant it to be as comprehensive as can be. This way, it may give an answer to most grammatical problems that the foreign student of English is likely to encounter. Thirdly, I meant it to be practical. This way the student of English grammar may be able to use it both in the classroom and at home. Put together, these three objectives will serve both the short term need of our students to pass the end of the year exam and the long term preparation for the advanced literary and linguistic studies in the second cycle. Most of the material covered in this booklet comes from a variety of sources which I have come to use for the preparation of my grammar courses. A bibliography is provided at the end of this booklet to serve two aims. One I intend it to be an invitation to the student to further their readings as far as English grammar is concerned. Second, I intend it to be an acknowledgement of these works I have consulted and used in preparing my grammar course. Another part of the material in this booklet comes from my direct contact with the English language and from suggestions from fellow colleagues. Yet, shortcomings of this work are my sole responsibility. The textbook is accompanied by a workbook. The textbook covers the basic grammatical concepts related to the structure of the English language. The workbook provides the user with material to practise what they have been introduced to in the textbook. Both books try to achieve the following two general aims. First, they aim to introduce the student to the study of English syntax and hence make them aware of the importance of the grammatical items and their function in the language. Second, the books aim at enabling the student to analyze the English language both semantically and syntactically, thus contributing to the development of skills required for the effective use of written Standard English. Once more, I hope that this work will serve its purpose. It goes without saying that while this work has benefited a lot from both my readings and from discussions with fellow colleagues, all shortcomings are mine.
