As a woman, I’m not very familiar with what a boy goes through during adolescence. While I do have a few brothers, I didn’t really pay that much attention to them and their changes while we were growing up. I was a typical, self-absorbed pubescent girl, nobody else could have possibly been more important or interesting than me. Then I grew up and had children, who happened to both also be girls, so again, zero knowledge of the plight of the adolescent male. So, being the naturally curious human that I am, I did a little reading. This book is short, succinct, well thought out, and easy to read. It’s perfect for anybody who needs or wants information on the topic but isn’t necessarily a big reader. Woolery puts forth the information without any of the science jargon that can make understanding puberty daunting. There is a plethora of information, but not so much that it becomes overwhelming. This is a great book for parents, and even educators, to help grasp when young men go through during puberty.
Most modern parents go right to the internet searches when it comes time to help their boy through puberty. Those same parents wonder what information they can trust. They are smacked with overwhelming information everywhere they look. You are trying your best to help your child through this stressful time the best that you can. The educational system is woefully inadequate in equipping our kids to face puberty. This book covers everything from a basic understanding of puberty to the different stages and hygiene. It also covers the importance of physical and mental health. There is a very detailed section just covering stress. There are a few different kinds of stress that happens during this period in their life. It talks about the different signs of stress and tips on how to properly manage it. The end of the book covers all of the important difficult conversations to have with your adolescent. The very last chapter provides parental guidelines to help children glide through their puberty journey.
This book covers most of what one needs to know. The author's tone is humorous and supportive. As with most discussions of talking about masturbation with your teen boy, no specific wording is given. Once again I'm left on the dark about what to suggest to my husband to tell him. Also, what should a mom say to her son if in a single-parent household? Still, an excellent and reassuring book.
