Brenda Jernigan is a bestselling author. Her books have been nominated for
many awards - Book Seller’s Best Award, The Maggie Award, and The Holt
Medallion Award. Publisher’s Weekly said, “Brenda Jernigan writes Romance,
Adventure and Magic”

She grew up living the life of a tomboy – climbing trees, playing ball, and excluding starry-eyed romance from her daily repertoire. Brenda discovered the love of books while taking her son to Story Hour at the local library -- she was hooked. She set an ambitious goal and began work on her first novel. She continued to write six more novels in rapid succession. She figured having the same birthday as Ernest Hemingway couldn’t hurt.

Her books have been printed in several languages and her last book “Southern Seduction” written under the name of Alexandria Scott was printed in Russian.

The Choice by Brenda Jernigan is a classic rich boy falls in love with the girl from the wrong side of the tracks so the mother pays girl to disappear but boy doesn't care trope. If I had known that, I probably wouldn't have bothered reading it. I never got into the characters and the mother is a real piece of work. On the positive, it's extremely well-written and flows nicely.

This book seemed much longer than it was, 90% of it takes place inside the character's heads. Not nearly enough dialogue or interactions between characters.

Brenna walked away from her fiancé Taylor after being blackmailed into it by his evil mother ("no one is good enough for my son!"). She needed the money for her little sister's surgery and needed to get away from her hometown after her parents die. She moves to a small town and buys a B&B.

Taylor searched for Brenna a long time after she left, even though she only moved about two hours away and he's really rich and could easily afforded a private eye, but never found her. Now he's engaged to Carol and (what a coincidence!) they get stuck at Brenna's B&B for a few days.

There's plenty of "I'm still attracted to him/her" and "I hate him/her" (more time spent inside their heads). It's a constant back-and-forth with Taylor and Brenna. I found myself not really caring anymore and just wanting the book to end.

There is also a side story about the death of Brenna's parents that is just too bizarre. I guess it was supposed to shed more light on some of the character's actions, but it was just too weird. I can't recommend this one at all.

5 STARS!

Brenna Fox came home from college one day to find both her parents dead and her little sister, Lisa, shot in the hip. Brenna only knew that something had pushed her father over the line of sanity. The scandal would also cause trouble for her fiancée, Taylor Rothschild. It could even ruin his banking career. Vivian Rothschild, Taylor’s mother, would do anything to keep Brenna from marrying her son. Using the scandal to her advantage, Vivian offered Brenna the money for Lisa’s surgery, but only if Brenna left town forever and never contacted Taylor again. Should Brenna ever tell Taylor of their bargain, she would have to pay all the money back. For Lisa’s sake, Brenna agreed and walked out of Taylor’s life without even saying goodbye. Three years passed.

Brenna settles down in Hollow Ridge, North Carolina, a small town that caters to skiers. Brenna now owns and operates a B&B. Ten-year-old Lisa helps her keep Sleepy Hollow Inn running smoothly and her beloved cook, Geraldine, is a blessing. The last person she expects to see walking through the door is Taylor. But Taylor is not alone. He has a new fiancée.

***** FIVE STARS! Real heroes are those who put the welfare of others before themselves, even if it means sacrificing their happiness. This is exactly the type of person Brenna is. Author Brenda K. Jernigan has a writing style that made it easy for me to understand and care for the characters. The story hooked me on the very first page and did not let go. And the surprising twist toward the end made my mouth fall open. I never saw it coming. I fell so far into the story that the world seemed to fade away and I lost track of time. But it was well worth losing sleep over. I cannot recommend this story highly enough. *****

Ms. Jernigan's The Choice is an excellent read. Tragedy strikes Brenna and her younger sister when their parents are victims of a double murder. As gossip abounds, Brenna's sister needs medical help. To get her that help, and to escape prying eyes, Brenna takes her sister and flees home, leaving behind her one true love, Taylor. Three years later, her sister is thriving, Brenna is the owner of a bed and breakfast in a ski town, and her heart still pines for Taylor. She's never gotten over him and regrets how she left him without an explanation. But a deal made in haste prevented her from speaking the truth, and now, he's secured a room at her B&B with another woman.

Carol is everything a man should want in a woman. She's pretty, smart, caring and will make a fine wife. At least, that's what Taylor convinces himself to believe before he proposes to her. And the moment he does, Brenna re-enters his life and sets his senses spinning into overdrive. After the way she ran out on him, after the days and nights he spent banishing her from his heart, he still loves her. When a freak skiing accident forces him to remain at her B&B, Taylor comes to the conclusion the past needs to be re-awakened and re-explored before he can move forward with the future.

Honestly, I loved this book. Right from the start, the setting and characters grabbed my attention and wouldn't let go. I couldn't read fast enough, as I was caught up in Brenna and Taylor's heartbreak and wanted to know 'what' exactly tore them apart. Once that part became clear, I rooted for these two soul mates to find their way back to each other. Ms. Jernigan has spun a clever, heart-warming tale. She is one author whose books you should be reading.

A very trite novel. The concept has been used so many times. Rich boy falls in love with crappy choice, according to Mom. Mom pays h off so she will go away because she wants to save sister, blah, blah, blah. I don't recommend this book as it's been done so many times, and in much better format. A few really silly editing errors. There is no angst, cheating or anything really worth reading.
