In The Enemy's Camp

This is the first book for me authored by Lisa Reany. Two Tribes - the Cree and the Blackfoot. Two powerful men, Running Wolf son of Chief Black Eagle, and Two Hawks, unknown son of Chief Black Eagle, who was found lost in a snowstorm, and raised by the Cree. Kimana, and some members of her tribe were taken by Running Wolf when they attacked the Cree in revenge for their attack on the Blackfoot. Kimana cannot accept that she is to stay with the Blackfoot tribe and bitterly resists any interaction with her captors. Chief Black Eagle and Meda the medicine woman slowly help Kimana to adjust to the Blackfoot ways. Kimana was to marry Two Hawks before the battle and believes he died. Kimana starts feeling many things for Running Wolf. Just as her happiness with Running Wolf brings forth plans to marry, Two Hawks finds her and demands she must marry him as was intended. As the Chiefs son, she may be forced to marry him due to his asking her first. The decision must be made by the Spirits of the Ancestors. Kimana is forced to take a journey on her own to find the answer. Honor and Integrity were a binding belief. This is quite a storyline and well worth reading. I could not put it down!!! Thank you Lisa!!

This is an enjoyable romance, perfect for curling up with in a cosy chair and a hot chocolate. I enjoyed the tension between the two main characters as the sparks flew off them.

Kimana is a chieftain’s daughter, she is part of the Cree tribe, it’s the day before she is due to marry Two Hawks another member of the Cree Tribe, when their camp is attacked by the Blackfoot tribe. All the men are killed and the women and children are taken as captives. Kimana puts up a pretty good fight to not be taken but she is up against Running Wolf. Despite the situation they are in there is some chemistry between these two. Kimana has no idea if her husband to be has been killed or if he escaped. But she is a very strong willed character and is not going to make anything easy for Running Wolf.

But things have been hard for Running Wolf he had lost his wife and mother to the Cree tribe in a previous attack on them so he tries not to care.

This is a real romantic read, not too spicy just enough that you know what is happening. The story flows well as Kimana and Running Wolf try to fight there attraction. But then someone else turns up at the camp, that could change things forever, it depends what the spirits tell Kimana. Who will end up together?

Refreshing change!

Forget dukes and balls, and make way for fierce warriors and teepees! This moving love story is set in an unusual setting and all the more interesting for it. Enemies to lovers is always a favourite trope and this well-written book delivers. (I imagined Running Wolf as Wind in His Hair, in the film Dances With Wolves, always a good start!)
Reaney was a new author to me and I was pleasantly surprised.

I loved this!
Let me start by saying that the dedications and quotes at the beginning had me choke up… i knew from then i would not be disappointed.
I especially liked Two Hawks. How unusual ( in a good way!) to have a character you cannot quite fathom. Is he a villain? A good guy? It really kept me going.
All in all, a great read

SPOILER BELOW

I wish it had come with some sort of warning about animal cruelty/deaths.
I find that triggering for me and avoid books that have it.

Obviously, they hunt animals for their food, but it's never written in detail so I was fine with this.

However, the female lead forces her horse to cross a dangerous, icy river. The horse ends up ripped to pieces and has to have her neck sliced to end her suffering. Then later on they chase buffalo off a cliff top to their deaths so they can use their meat. This wasn't written in great detail as well so it wasn't that bad, but i would have probably avoided the book if i knew.

In terms of the story, it was ok and enjoyable. Sometimes however, i felt the language was too modern for the time period this was set in. I skimmed over some chapters after half way through as i wasn't finding Two Hawks parts that interesting.

Sometimes the female was a bit whiplash as well. She hated him, she loved him, she hated him, she loved him.
She hated that they killed her entire tribe and that the survivors seemed to accept this new tribe easily. But then the only time she tries to escape is when he has offended her. She seemed to give up her hated for what they had done very easily.
