Diamonds 101 is about a diamond hunt with handicaps that extend beyond the golf course. You will meet scoundrels, swindlers, and crooks. Imposters and racketeers. The high society, thieves and a killer! This story is unique in that it reveals the killer but not the victim - and you probably won't figure out who actually got killed during the diamond hunt.
What? You thought this book is a diamond buyer's guide? You could be right. Still, at times it reads like a skilled mix of thriller and non-fiction, making you hold the book tight in your hands in fear of missing out - or being swept away in the diamond hunt.
Despite the thrill and the detailed diamond information throughout, this book has its funny moments too. The author has a gift of flabbergasting you with connotations that make you smile - unless the mysterious killer is on scene of course!
So what about the title? Can this book help you to BUY diamonds rather than looting them? Oh yeah! Plus, it can help you to avoid being robbed of your cash - whether you earned it or not :-)
I received this book for free from a Goodreads First Reads giveaway. I don't mean to sound like a child, but this book could have seriously been enhanced with some simple photos or drawings. For example, when describing the anatomy of a diamond in chapter 2 or the different shapes described in chapter 5. I understand that taking pictures of microscopic images may be more difficult, so not all chapters could be enhanced by photos or diagrams. I will say that I learned a lot, I enjoyed the chapter about the different types and companies relating to certification. The author used a lot of good analogies and desribed things in a way that was easy to understand. I think it is a great book for the novice! I feel that I have a good handle on the beginning steps to looking for and buying a diamond.
Diamonds 101 ~ A Diamond Buyers Guide is a guide that approaches a serious subject with a well-organized presentation of the material. It is written in a manner that makes a technical subject understandable by anyone. Compared to some of the other technical guides I have on gem stones, this one is delightful and still full of useful information for a person just learning about diamonds. It actually was fun to read and the author offered many tips to help a buyer avoid being taken advantage of by sellers of diamonds or diamond jewelry. The cover art is beautiful.

My daughter loaned me this book because she was so excited about it. I read it and found it very interesting and informative on the subject of purchasing diamonds. It was easy to understand, sometimes funny and told of pitfalls when purchasing diamonds, either as loose stones or in jewelry. She won this story from Goodreads First Reads giveaways.
