A collection of short stories from China and Japan dealing with women of various time periods from the early 600s to the modern time (mid 1900s). If you're interested in literature about women (with a feminist bent), this is a great read. It's fascinating to read the development and portrayal of women over the centuries (but I admit to being rather ignorant in this area and therefore possibly easily moved). The coverage is shallow so if you want something in-depth, this is not it, however, as an introductory text, this is wonderful and entertaining.

The last three short stories are incredibly rich and evocative. These are by the Japanese authors Akutagawa Ryonosuke, Tanizaki Junichiro, and Mishima Yukio. Authors I will definitely be seeking out to read again.

Thank you Dorothy Blair Shimer for compiling and editing, and the many translators.

Chinese women were treated as chattel and baby factories, subject to the whims of older women and males, and often tortured. It is not surprising that Mao's Communism has been a successful alternative life choice to millions of Chinese women.

High born Japanese women while mostly regarded as property lived in walled compounds. An invitation inside a compound or castle came with a tacit license from the host to visit any female at night. Characteristics of a virtuous Japanese woman are Yasahi (gentleness), Omoiyari (Thoughtfulness);Shinsetsu (Kindness); Resilience and Stocism. Characteristics of a virtuous Japanese man are Majime (discipline/responsibility), Gambari (perserverence), Isshokenmei (hard work) and Gaman (self-reliance).
